T337a 5.1 lollipop??? - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a simple question... Is there a 5.1 lollipop update for the Tab 4 8.0 T337a?
I've seen them for practically every other tab 4 model but haven't seen one that lists the t337a specifically. Im planning on rooting mine REALLY soon also so if there is a 5.1 lollipop available for it, do i want to put it on 1st or not?
Thanks for the assistance !

Sadly no not yet. Idk who to blame but I'm picking att

I found this but I haven't been able to download it yet.

Doubt AT&T will bother. Not only did this Tab not sell well, but they don't even carry it anymore. We have been abandoned by then. Not a surprise but still bull crap.

That isn't for the 337a, so does us no good in this thread.

So there are no sources like SlimRom for getting the Samsung to Lollipop?

Never will be any custom ROMs for the 337a. Locked bootloader and zero dev interest. Stuck with stock and seems 4.4.2 forever til it dies.

I have root but haven't been offered the ipdate, but I also have all fota stuff frozen so I don't get forced to update and lose root. Is there a guaranteed way to get root back if I take the update? And how would I capture it if I even get it (in prepaid data only thru AT&T)?

You probably can't take the update and keep root (yet, although I want to work on that). Capturing the OTA file itself should be fairly simple (it was for me on my locked bootloader AT&T device that I captured the initial lollipop ota file for)
All you have to do is be on stock rooted (ie no custom rom) and unfreeze the fota stuff. Allow it to download the OTA file, when it's done it should prompt you whether you want to install it now or wait til later. Obviously wait til later. Immediately in a root-enabled file explorer (I recommend either root browser or ES file explorer with the root option enabled) find the directory /cache/fota (or it could be /data/fota/). One of these two directories should have a file with file extension .cfg. The filename itself will most likely be a string of random numbers so ######.cfg. This is the file you want. Copy it anywhere safe, preferably an external SD card. Then erase the file from the original location and refreeze the fota crap.

I will try this when I get home to my fast trusted UNLIMITED WiFi. On vacation at my parents where they have satellite (slow as a snail) and are limited to only 10gb a month. I'll be home Sunday. Like I said tho that's IF I even get offered it since I'm on prepaid and with cricket on my phone, I didn't get otas on my AT&T devices. So nice to have an unbranded phone now. [emoji2]

Update applied. I had grabbed the OTA file, but stupidly stashed it on internal storage and then had to do a full reset to actually get it to apply the thing in the first place. Oops.
Had to try five times to get it to apply. I ended going all the way back to a vigin install of the NF4 firmware and going through the upgrade to NK2 first. I suspect my problems had to do with the Flashfire script having been run, but I can't say for certain.

Well, I am home. Defrosted EVERYTHING I had frozen. Restarted tablet. Went to software update and..... NOTHING HAPPENED. The button does zero, zip, zilch. So I'm sorry @thisisapoorusernamechoice, I can't get the update. Not even the latest kitkat. Stupid AT&T blocking prepaid users.

I have tried updating OTA several times but it keeps failing. I am guessing it is because I have rooted? I have captured the .cfg file. Here is a Dropbox link to the .cfg file.
EDIT: I removed the link because it was the wrong OTA. I did update through recovery and the file I had installed 4.4.2. I think I need to go back to stock in order to get the Lollipop OTA.
EDIT 2: I downgraded to stock firmware with ODIN and then I received two OTA updates. One was a small update (roughly 172 MB) and then the second update (860 MB) that upgraded me to Lollipop 5.1.1. I am guessing that since the bootloader is locked on this device there is absolutely no way to root after Lollipop because we are unable to install a custom kernel. Is this correct?
I saw in another thread where someone tried to flash the NF4 kernel with the new Lollipop update to gain root and it soft bricked their tablet.

That's the same boat I'm in. I've just bought one brand new in the box for $127.99 and it's got 4.2.2 on it. I'd like to FOTA update it, but no AT&T has to be jerks about their firmware updates. Are there any tricks like connecting to an AT&T WiFi account, or does it verify the IMEI somehow? I had the same issue with my S6 edge, but they have been pretty quick about getting the ODIN flashable updates out as of late so I never bothered to figure out a work around.

[Q] Sprint SGT Update

Just got a system update notification... taking forever to install... anyone know what it entails?
Edit: SO I see that Sprint ID / EW!!!) was installed, and my Firmware is 2.2.1, and baseband is S: P100.08 S: EB28, and Build is SPH-P100.EB28...
Problem is, I can't remember if that's new or not...lol. Damn me for not paying attention, and DAMN ME for thinking that the possibility of a HC release was possible... stupid hopes and dreams....
Edit II: Just found this report... compared to the rest of the updates, the SGT got the short end of the stick YET AGAIN!!!
http://www.wirelessandmobilenews.co...epic-4g-tab-transform-updates-coming-321.html
"The Samsung Galaxy Tab update adds Sprint ID features."
I updated also and 2.2.1 is new, also ot updated the modem as seen by hitting the soft menu key during the update and looking under about phone, baseband. I would like to see if the update package had a whole modem.bin in ot but i installed the update before I got the temp file. The last update only had a modem file of a few kbytes so it just patched the modem. It would be great to get hold of a whole modem.bin as there are none for the sprint tab currently.
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
I was just going to as if anyone was able to grab the modem.bin. Hopefully we get luck and someone is able to do so.
What about root status? I'm hesitant to update if it breaks root because of the issues I've had with the stock gallery app (removed it via a root file explorer).
I updated my rooted Gtab and the root seems unaffected. I use mine without a data pack - wifi only. I used the root to get rid of the activation nagger in the notification bar - and it's still gone and SuperUser is still operating.
However: Sprint ID only works through a Sprint Subscriber Data Pack - not over WiFi, unless you have a company "Keyword". Alas - I don't like Sprint ID anyway.
sprint tv
i installed the "sprint" id, and it says in the description about sprint tv. i had this on the evo, but i feel like i'd make better use of it on a 7 inch screen. any ideas how to get it on the tab? i searched the market under the sprint tab and had no luck finding it.. any suggestion would be great
I got the OTA shortly after trying to install clockwork and patching an overclocked kernel. I wasn't expecting the OTA until Monday, but I went ahead and try to install it (it failed, of course).
I managed to pull the downloaded zip file out of my cache and check if there was a modem.bin. Unfortunately, once again, there's only a modem_delta.bin, so no luck there.
I tried running the update again manually after rolling back my kernel, and apparently I still had a modified boot.img, so after doing a full wipe, rolling back to DJ30, and then manually updating to EA24, I was able to get the EB28 update installed, with all of its Sprint ID goodness. It's very late now so I don't have time to actually play with it much, but I'm actually happy to be back to an official build. I'm hoping they fixed a few of the bigger issues I had with EA24, but I somehow doubt it.
Previously I was rooted and had the Bauxite kernel. I flashed the original kernel back and then installed the EB28 update. I lost root, so I tried superoneclick again. It said it rooted but superoneclick locked up while "Remounting system with read-only access..." My tab is unresponsive but the buttons are still lit up.
Update: I finally got it to reboot and I am rooted again.

I applied the update last night and can confirm that root is still intact, so the super one click method should still work if you haven't rooted your tab prior to this update.
Unfortunately, what is also intact is my long standing issue with the stock Gallery app (rogue sensor usage causing massive battery drain). Ah well, removed with Titanium backup, replaced with Just Pictures, problem fixed. Again.
Other than the addition of Sprint ID, this seems to be a pretty minor update. Could be my imagination, but it seems a tad snappier than the EA24 update. Could be the incremental increase to Android 2.2.1. But other than Sprint ID, there are no major new features.

Thanks for the useful info. I was hesitant to run the update after the previous hassles. I've just updated mine without any noticeable detrimental effect.

Root was not intact for me after upgrade. I tested with root explorer, and font changer. Both failed after trying to get root permission. I just used SOC after upgrade. All was good...

Thanks I really appreciate it!
I was previously rooted with SuperOneCLick (rageagainstthecage method). I did not unroot prior to the upgrade. The upgade said it failed but a look at About Phone proved otherwise. I would suggest that people unroot before the upgrade but it did not matter for me.
After the update I no longer had root access. But I was able to root with SuperOneClick again. I have had no problems since the upgrade/reroot. There are no interface differences that I have spotted so far.
Can someone please post the application name for the Sprint ID so I can remove it. I had gotten rid of all the Bloatware and now after this update I get this which I will not use.
By the way I was rooted with Super One Click and using the Once Click lag Fix and after update I did lose Root. Just re-rooted and am fine now. Got scared because the orientation was not working and I thought it broke it. Sohow the update set the orientation lock.
Also I deleted a couple files hoping these were the new Sprint ID update.
Does anyone know what they are and if I need them can somone please post them? I will take the best guess of what I remember them being called.
Perhaps someone can post there Sprint file names.

Thanks,
Mark
Can someone post the update.zip for the update? I got the OTA notification but when it attempted to install (using Stock recovery), it failed, somehow.
Thanks in advance.
I need the update.zip as well.
Hell, mine still tries to update my tab to EA24 which always failed. Can't even get the notification for 28. Time to go to Sprint and raise some hell....

My sprint galaxy tab was updated the EB28 the day I got it (two days ago), today I was trying to get CWM on the tab, got stuck at Samsung screen, so I used odin and flashed back to DJ30 (without baseband, which is already at EB28) and have been trying to get back to EB28 since.
Can any of you kind gentlemen who updated to EB28 do a roto backup and upload the file? I think this is the only way I can get back into EB28 at the moment.
Many thanks!

[Q] How Do I Prevent OTA 4.3 Update

So my Nexus 7 has downloaded the OTA firmware before I realized that Google was doing a roll-out. The Nexus 7 want me to reboot and do the FW upgrade but I don't want to upgrade the tablet. There does not appear to be a easy way to retain Root, and i'm not interested in teh steps for CFW, etc so it easier for me to stay on v4.2.x. Is there a way to prevent the upgrade? can I delete the downloaded OTA update or something? What is the path to the OTA update files? I would like to know before rebooting as I'm not sure if rebooting will just force the update. I have rooted the tablet but no other hacks such as unlocked boot loader have been performed on the device. I did a web search but did not see a in dept conversation on how to refuse the update once it has been downloaded onto the device
You could try a root keeper app that will retain root after the update. As for preventing the update, I'm not sure how that would work. Should be easy enough to keep root though.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
A RootKeeper does not work with 4.3 due to the way that secuirity is implemented in the new FW. This has been noted in the description of the RootKeeper app on the Play store
The OTA file is in /cache and should be called ab67ca07c4b2e03eca795ada10ff041b77fbb7bf.signed-nakasi-JWR66V-from-JDQ39.ab67ca07.zip (that is, if you're using wifi-only device, otherwise the name will be slightly different)
But in another thread it came up, that at some time the update will spring up again, so you should keep an eye on it
p.s. that should be the update file, but still take this with a grain of salt, i don't have much experience messing with ota updates.

I checked the cache folder using es explorer and it showed no data files(zip) in that folder. maybe the file was not downloaded yet or was already applied and the device is just waiting for a reboot to consummate the upgrade
Or you could just flash CleanROM and have 4.3 and root.
Sent from my NookColor using xda app-developers app
u could take a look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998378
Thanks for all of the input. I resolved this issue. I just enabled root in es explorer which showed the hidden OTA zip file in the Cache folder. I renamed the file, but the OS deleted it after the rename so I could not even save a copy of the file. I have since rebooted and the OTA did not re-download (which is a good thing) although I still get an icon in notification indicating that the OTA is ready to install.
I'm just not interested in updating to the latest 4.3 build due to lack of time. I have many Android devices and spending the time to Root and or unlock the boot loader on each device is just taking to much of my time. So I'll just stay on the current build until I have time to tinker again. Thanks again everyone for your input
I clicked the update (stupid I know) and because I was stock 4.2.2, but rooted, got bootloop. I had to use fastboot to update to the stock 4.3, now hunting for root instructions. I post this so folks running anything non-stock don't blindly accept the OTA update or headaches will ensue.

I wish I had seem this warning earlier too. I blindly accepted the OTA update yesterday thinking "Oh hey Android 4.3! Awesome!" and now I'm running in a whole load of problems and glitchs. I'm also not rooted yet which makes another problem because I can't find anything to root 4.3 yet. Also can't find anything on how to restore back to stock Android 4.2.2. Does anyone know anything about this? Will factory reset do the trick? I have all my stuff backed up.

You can't install the update if you've rooted, it checks if a flag has been tripped which is as part of rooting.
The flag is said to be perma so even factory resetting/re-flashing you can't OTA anymore.
If you have not rooted yet and install this you can root after but you won't be able to take any future updates.
Hopefully someone comes out with way to reset the flag or root without tripping.

I believe that only the download process is blocked and not the flashing. If we can get the OTA download file we should be able to flash it onto a un-rooted stock phone that once was rooted.
I was rooted, then I went back to stock via Odin tar. I received and installed the OTA this morning.

Do you have to wipe your phone or whats the process?
Also, I thought simply rooting kept stock recovery...isnt that what the OTA looks for?
Hoping this first update would fix the lag on the phone. S4 suffered the same when it first came out. Pretty bad when it has higher clock speed than the M8 but is the slower device. Something just isn't right.

No need to wipe. I flashed the Stock Tar in Odin, then make sure your phone shows as Official in Download mode, if it does, you will be able to receive the OTA. If it still shows as Custom then you are doing something wrong, which I was at first, I left my extsd card in. Once I took it out and flash the Stock Tar in Odin, everything was official and I received the OTA and updated my phone, and then re-rooted. Now I am rooted with software version ND2.

It available from Sammobile.com
Here ya go fellas.
1. DL this stock NCB tar.
2. Take out your EXT SD Card (if you have one).
3. Flash the stock NCB tar (put it in "PDA" in Odin).
4. Do a factory reset in the stock recovery after you flash the tar (not necessary but deff won't kill ya!).
5. Reboot, check for the OTA and wait for it to complete.
6. Re-root.
7. GOOD TO GO!
You arent gonna catch me doing a factory reset, hahaha. Not unless I absolutely have to. Might try this later today or this weekend tho.
Will someone come up with a pre rooted flashable zip file of ND2? I really don't want to go through odin if I don't need to.

I can't say this for sure since I don't have the S5 but if you are stock, meaning odexed and no stock files deleted/changed, with root you should be able to ota and retain root using supersu pro survival mode. I've done it many times on the s4 and a couple of times on note 3. I have also done it with xposed/wanam. Lately it would fail to ota with xposed/wanam. It would error patching some of the system files. Get the filename and location. Navigate there and restore the backup version of the files (delete current file and rename Bak file).

5.1 Update - Use Motorola Device Manager to Get the FXZ

I have pointed this out in several places, but I wanted to make a thread about it so that it gets more widespread attention.
When the 5.1 update is released, if instead of taking the OTA you use Motorola Device Manager to update, you will have a copy of the 5.1 fxz for your device on your computer. It will be in the folder c:\programdata\motorola\SUE\firmwares if you have a PC.
If the OTA has already begun to download on your device, then MDM won't update you b/c it will say there is an update in progress. So if you are rooted, you must delete or freeze the MotorolaOTA app. If you are not rooted, I think there may be some way to avoid the OTA but idk, you would have to read up on it. I think you may be able to wipe your data partition and/or cache if the download has begun in order to erase it, idk.
You know, I have been meaning to freeze the update app, thats always kinda been SOP with modded phones, though I know how much everyone loves their OTAs
I know I searched once before and couldn't find the name, as most don't seem to do it; which app do I need to freeze?
I think I am planning to wait for the official to drop, then try it for a bit hopefully from a TWRP backup before updating my bootloader and what not via fastboot (assuming Moto gives the dev editions an SBF again...)
I googled for FXZ... Which means Full XML Zip, but didnt seem to find what it does and, how it is important..??
Any xplanation wud really be helpfull...
Thank you..!

It is the full ROM, so if you wanted to go back to stock, you would flash it, wipe user data, and be ready to go.
So, whn 5.1 is released, if i update it using Motorola device manager, the previous operating system which is 4.4.4 will be backed up, using FXZ...??

No, it's the full 5.1 so that when/if you screw up your phone you can fastboot flash the stock 5.1. Once you update fully, you can't ever go back. This just gives you the safety net of being able to restore a stock 5.1 system.

Stock 5.1 system and recovery!
You can NEVER* safely downgrade the bootloader and partition table of a Moto X!!!!!!!
* there was 1 exception to this that jcase and found and was able to use it to root 4.4.4 - if you are not jcase though, you should not try to downgrade motoboot.img or gpt.bin!!!!!!

What's the difference between an FXZ versus an SBF? Now that the official 5.1 OTA is out for the XT1053, I need it to update my phone from the 5.0.2 soak

I tried to use mdm on the small 4.4.4 update. When I plugged my phone in it said my device was already in the middle of upgrading even though I did not install it yet. So once you are prompted by OTA how to get mdm to work? Mfastboot seems much easier. But yes, I want the file.

I am pretty sure it won't be long for someone to release the image files once they are officially released. It usually doesn't take long.

Back up the device then do a factory reset. Then put it in bootloader mode and start MDM.
If that doesn't work, take out the SIM card and after the factory reset, activate the phone but don't put in a google account or let it connect to Wifi and then go to settings and enable developer options and USB debugging and then connect it to your computer and start MDM.

Doing a quick google search told me this -
FXZ = Full XML Zip
SBF = System Binary File
I guess SBF cant be extracted by winrar etc but FXZ can be
Now that 5.1 is being officially released and rolled out, can we start this back up?
do i actually have to do the update to gt the fxz?
hey i tried to flash back to stock and run the MDM, but it said that i already have the newest version (KK)
and then i tried to install the new motorola update service, and run the MDM again.. but still it said that i already have the newest version (KK)
and now i run the OTA update because i dont know how to make it using MDM, i really want the FXZ file because i want back it up for me
sorry for my super bad english
I'm on mac.
Got the 5.1 Retail.en.GB update notice OTA. But i want to use MDM to capture the FXZ.
I connect and say check and it says no updates.
Any ideas??
Put your phone into airplane mode, reboot to recovery, erase cache, reboot normally (make sure you're still in airplane mode), connect to MDM, and it should see the update.

You wrote you want to reset your phone to the BS free ROM, but then at the end you write you want to get root access. What state was your phone in when you started to try this? Was your phone already rooted? Was your phone already rooted and on BS free ROM and just needed to clean up your phone and get back onto the BS free ROM? If you were not already rooted and had taken the Verizon OTA updates to Lollipop, chances are good you cannot root your phone, and therefore you cannot run the BS Free ROM. Let us know what state your phone was in when you started this so we can help you better.

What software version you're on and did you have root before you tried to reset to Verizon Galaxy S5 to BS_FREE_Lolipop??
To reply to everyone the only thing I ever did with the phone was update to 5.0 If I can't get root no big deal but I really want to install something that gets rid of all the Verizon junk apps :/

If you never rooted your phone and you took all of the Verizon OTA updates to 5.0 you are most likely on OG5 and cannot root your phone. If you took an OTA update in the past few days before trying this, you may have been on the latest OK3 security patch update. Your best bet would probably be to find the OG5 full factory tar file and flash it in ODIN to get your phone back to a working state. I think there is a thread in the general section where you can find the file you need.

No. No root means no custom ROMs.

Well I was able to repair it finally using the tool, I'm still on 5.0 so I'm guessing I'm screwed... What about downgrading and then doing root / custom ROM? Or am I just screwed all together LOL I'd just sell the phone at this point since I no longer have Verizon (they're ****) but still have the phone.

Sorry to keep saying no, but if you are on OE1, OG5, or the new OK3 you cannot downgrade. You are stuck where you are.
