My Lg G4 review - G4 General

Morning All,
Thought I would share my thoughts on the LG G4 after owning it for a month. I use the in a business environment where I will spend 2-4 hours per day talking on it, so my review will come from that perspective more that from a gaming perspective. It was this difference in usage pattern that I thought may interest people.
Currently I have made no real changes to the setup of the device, it is still running stock everything and is a Telstra H815K model.
The look and feel of the device is excellent and gives a real feel of quality. I went for the brown leather option and to date it is completely un-marked by any signs of wear. When I first picked up the phone I was really surprised by how light it was. It is not a small device but it feels very very light and initially it feels like you are holding a toy. I think if you were to hold another phone at the same time you could be forgiven for saying it felt cheap due to the lightness but away from other phones you soon forget that comparison and just appreciate the fact it doesn't weigh a tonne. And really, no one says a Macbook Air feels cheap because it's light.
The leather back is a really really nice differential and I have had people ask what the case was and where they could get something similar. At only a month in I would expect a traditional back to still be pristine, but I had some concerns over the durability of the leather. Suffice to say that it looks exactly the same today as the day I got it. I will say though that my impressions of the black leather back were no where near as positive, as it had the look and feel of the fake leather patterning you often see on the inside of car doors.
Physical layout of the phone works well and it sits well in my hand. The narrow bezel around the screen means the phone is physically small compared to others with the same viewing area, with the draw back that sometimes my pudgy palm can just cross over into the sensor area of the screen. This does only happen when I am playing a game in portrait mode with two hands though so the impacts are limited.
I only have one criticism of the physical design and that is you cannot use the phone effectively if it is on a hard flat surface. This is due to the butt seam in the leather back acting as a pivot point and causing the phone to rock side to side. A usage case for me is to have the phone sitting on my desk and to type a text message on it. This is simply not possible with this phone.
The screen is excellent. Colours are very well reproduced and the colour balance is one of the best I have come across. When I have done a colour balance comparison the phone comes up a little on the blue side. But that for me is a lot nicer than the yellow you see on most other phones. It is also no where near the saturation levels of Samsung. I get no light bleed or detectable changes in brightness or colour and if there are pixels there somewhere they are way too small for me to see
Battery usage for me has been fine in most usage cases. By the end of the work day my phone is reporting that voice calls are using the same amount of battery as screen time, about 30%, and a full battery at 7am will be sitting around 35% come 6pm. In the evening though I have found that the battery will get annihilated by some of the games I am playing. Clash of Clans for example will chew 25%-30% of the battery per hour. That said those games smash my Nexus 9 as well.
Even when I am playing games for extended periods, usually plugged into the mains, I don't find heat to ever be a problem. The phone gets a little warmer than ambient but nothing more. I'm not sure if that is a side effect of the leather back or if the phone actually does run pretty cool but this phone is noticeably cooler than any phone I have owned or used in recent years.
Interface wise the default LG interface is ok. It's not brilliant but it's not completely sucky. It takes more grunt than it really should and the smart bulletin thing is frankly useless but I have used worse (not really a ringing endorsement I know). I've not had any issues with touch sensitivity or lag that I have seen others report and overall the interface feels as smooth as a device this powerful should feel. I will probably dump it when a custom rom is up and running nicely but that will be more about getting rid of the LG apps I will never use. My biggest complaint is the stupid smart notification system, seriously that is an oxymoron if ever there was one. I make lots and lots and lots of phone calls to lots and lots of different people, it's my job! Just because I called a number 3 times in the last week does NOT mean I want to add them as a new contact! So stop filling up my notification tray with "Frequent calls to xxxxxxxxxxxx. Add to contacts?" No! GO AWAY! DIE!!!! Seriously DIE!!!!
Camera is frankly excellent. I particularly love the speed at which it will take the first photo. Use the setting to "take photo on app start" and you can have a photo taken in around a second from pulling the phone out of your pocket. Most of my photos are of action shots of kids running around, and as anyone with kids knows you take 100 photos in the hope of catching one with you kids not looking like complete weirdos. The phone will take photos rapidly, keep moving targets in focus and the quality of the photos are good. When it comes to the manual aspect of the camera, honestly I think that is a bit of a wank. I'm sure it is very very good, but if I am going to take the time to mess around with f-stop and iso settings I will probably just use my SLR. Cameras in phone are replacements for your snappy camera, not a substitute for a SLR.
When it comes to sound quality, I use my phone as a phone not as a media player, so I can only comment on the telephone calls and they are good. Reception is also good being much better than my Note 2 or LG G2 ever were. Talking about reception though I have found the 5g wireless reception to be noticeably worse than other devices and I have had to stick my phone on 2.4g in order for it to have connectivity everywhere in my house. Other devices haven't had that problem.
Wireless charging and quick charging are a non-issue for me in my usage case so I don't have a reason to complain about those though I'm sure they would be a nice to have. Replaceable battery and microsd cards were however a big consideration in my choice. I still have an old Note 2 in use in my house, which is still trucking along after having a new battery put in it. I have also got an Lg G2 which was my first and only sealed phone which is now a useless paperweight as it will only hold charge for about 45 minutes of screen time. (yes I know I can replace the battery but why make it hard?) Phones are getting more and more powerful and the days of needing the next generation, as opposed to wanting, are gone. I now expect my $700 device to be usable for more than 2 years.
Overall I would highly recommend this phone. The things that are missing from it, QI charging, fast charging, finger print stuff, are not core things for me. I would have liked it to have had a slightly larger battery in it but that is offset by the ability to swap the battery at any time. The lightness was an unexpected plus and the screen is excellent. It has also become one of the cheapest flagship devices on the market, making it hard to go past. OEM software is always a bit dodgy but compared to the G2 & G3 it is a big improvement and it is much better than Sumsung's offering.

Nice review. For the most part I agree completely.

Thanks for the review!
Now I am convinced to take the gold plastic version, for typing on a table and for my car's sticky pad

The phone supports Qualcomm QuickCharge 2.0, so not sure why you think "fast charging" is missing from it. Just get a QC2.0-certified charger and a proper USB cable (some can't pass the extra current).

Nice review
Good perspective from how most people actually use a phone. Your observations are spot on.
The one thing I disagree with is the notion that the camera manual mode isn't valuable just because you have an SLR. I think it's fun as nuts. Sure, I'm not going to expect to use my phone for a professional photo shoot, but the point is, the vast majority of the time, you don't actually HAVE your SLR with you. But you always have your phone. It's sure nice to be able to take amazing pictures when all you've got is your phone. Combine manual mode with the raw image format and you can actually do some pretty shockingly nice stuff, in situations where you hadn't planned to cart a big camera along.

It doesn't charge as quickly as fully supported devices. The higher output of the 2.0 chargers charges more quickly than standard chargers but there's a good reason LG doesn't list this as a feature of the phone.
{edit} Thanks for others pointing out that the G4 is now listed as official on the Qualcomm site. It seems that while the device is now listed as supported I have read a lot of tests by users that suggest we're not getting quite the speed promised by the spec. Perhaps this doesn't apply to all variants and/or software revisions.

It doesn't fully support QuickCharge and while you will see improved charging time with a QC2 charger over stock it still isn't at the full spec. Also this moves you away from full stock in the same way that you can get QI charging with a cheap sticker it isn't something it came with by default. In fairness perhaps I should have noted that QI and QCish could be achieved with relatively cheap accessories.

I noticed the 2.4 vs. 5ghz problem as well. Curious to find out why there's such a disparity in signal strength since 5 should be stronger, not weaker.

Thanks.
Also with the camera I am absolutely sure you can get some amazing photos in manual mode, and I would expect that is especially true in low light conditions. I was however approaching it from my usage case which puts it in the too fiddly to use bracket. It's not that the interface is bad, quite the opposite in fact, I just can't see myself using it. Of course YMMV and it may suit your usage patterns well.

Other way around. 5ghz will carry more data than 2.4 but its signal strength will drop off much more quickly. It is also much more susceptible to being blocked by walls. When it comes to signal strength and connectivity the only advantage 5 has over 2.4 is there are often far more devices on 2.4 leading to more collisions. See http://www.speedguide.net/faq/is-5ghz-wireless-better-than-24ghz-340 for more details.
The reason I noted it was I will drop connection on my G4 when it is sat side by side with my Nexus 9 which is not having any issues on the same network.

Ah I meant clarity of signal. Sorry.
Interesting though.

Can you provide source info for it not being a true QuickCharge 2.0 device? It's the first phone listed on the QuickCharge 2.0 page: https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/quick-charge so I'm pretty sure it supports it.

Tests show that it does work, too: http://pocketnow.com/2015/05/11/lg-g4-quick-charge

I'm only going on other threads which other users suggested that the G4 was getting about 1.5%/minute on the quick charge as estimated by other users on the board. If they have since listed it, my apologies. On both 2.0 charges that I've purchases I'm not getting 2%/minute as the Qualcomm spec states.
Once again sorry to misrepresent since the "official" status appears to have changed.

Thanks for the review man

As jammin posted, I was basing it off old information and hadn't seen the specs had been updated. When I got the phone it wasn't listed as QC2 compatible, by either LG or Qualcomm. It is however worth noting that it doesn't come with a compliant charger.

Good review, thank you for taking the time to share your experiences.
On the topic of quick-charging, yes, even with a QC 2.0 charger, it doesn't charge as quickly as is implied by Qualcomm's website, or as fast as other quick-charging phones on the market.
Unfortunately, the phone significantly reduces the charge current as the phone & battery warm up. Buying the phone in summer in New England, it's rare that I consistently get even the ~1600mA that the LG charger is capable of, or the ~1950mA that I can get from my QC 2.0 charger. If the phone is cool, it will start out with those currents, but often quickly drops to about 300mA as things warm up (as the battery gets above ~90F, from what I can see). At 300mA, if it stayed at that current, it would take 10 hours to fully charge.
To me, this warm-temperature slowdown behavior trumps whether QC 2.0 is "fully" implemented. It slows you down to a fraction of what even the stock charger can provide. And you won't stay at the QC 2.0 rate for long, at least in a summer environment. I hope this can be improved with a software change that allows higher temperatures before reducing the charge current.

Update with pics
It's been 4 months since my original review and it still stands as the best phone I have owned. I really really wish root was easier and resultingly there was a large developer base but outside of that I love this phone.
Originally when I bought the leather I was concerned about how it would hold up. So far I have been very happy! My phones don't have the easiest life so to see the leather holding up so well really makes me happy. The photos below were taken with the G4 in question.

Why I will return mine...

Just wanted to share why I'll be returning mine after one day of use, for those interested. Not trying to bash the device or anything. First I want to say that it's more an issue with me and my personal preferences than an issue with the tablet, depending on how you want to see it.
1. The screen
I'm not a fan of what I perceived as dull and washed out colors on this device. They aren't as vivid as on my Note 2 for an example. Yes I activated the Bravia Engine and tried it turned off as well. Blacks aren't really black but grey almost. These issues makes the whole screen look poor and boring in my opinion. Especially when playing the same movie on both the Note and XTZ simultaneously.. the difference is huge. There was also some light bleeding around every side of the screen. Mostly noticeable with black colors, which would have been fixed if the black colors were black/turned off and not lit to the point of looking grey. The most important thing for me with a device centered around a screen, like phones, tablets and TV's is of course the screen itself. So for this reason alone it's going back. I tried looking for a fix but couldn't find anything..
You might wonder, "didn't you try it out first before you bought it?". Yes, I did for a couple of minutes and I also watched plenty of video reviews where these issues weren't mentioned or noticeable. But once I got home and tried it in different light conditions and had more time to play around with it, the difference in screen colors was more apparent. Besides I wasn't too worried about having to return it if I didn't like it since I bought it from a store that lets you buy a product, try it out and then decide if you want to keep it or return it, within a month.
2. Battery life
2 hours of watching a movie drained 35% of the battery life. Wi-Fi and all other applications turned off. I wasn't impressed. Not just when watching movies but playing games and browsing the web did the battery drain fast... I had to charge it after 4 hours of use which brings me to the next issue I have with the device..
3. Charging time
I initially thought there was something wrong with mine when I charged it for the first time. After 2 hours of charging the green juice in the battery icon was barely halfway through.. The battery took almost 5-6 hours to charge fully from 0%, the device was turned off while charging btw. I looked this up on forums and yes, according to others the charge time is very slow.
4. Lag
There were some lag and I'm not talking about the minimal lag there usually is with Android devices. But lag that could freeze the device for seconds for no apparent reason. This happened a couple of times, like when using Google Chrome and when I was on the homescreen. I don't know if this is because of the hardware or the combination of Sony + Android software. Point is, it lags too much compared to my Note 2. It felt like my old Note 1...
5. "Water resistant"
I was mainly interested in this device because of its waterproof capability, which to begin with wasn't so impressive. 30 minutes max. submerged in water up to 1 meter down. I was mainly planning on using it in the bathtub after work. But then I read on some forums that some people had issues with water breaking through the tabs or the tabs themselves breaking off. The tabs didn't feel so sturdy/reliable after I had the chance to close and open them up a couple of times. Felt like they would wear out and ultimately let water through. So I didn't really trust that feature..
So, those are the reasons it's going back. I'll look for something else or wait for the right thing for me to be released. Cheers!

I completely concur with points 2, 3, 4 & 5. I watch a lot of movies on this tablet, but as you say, despite airplane mode and the Mobile Bravia Engine turned off, the battery drain is absolutely phenomenal. My device is constantly on charge - it takes a good 6 hours, if not more to charge the tablet to 100%, watch a movie or two, or a long YouTube video and it's time to recharge again!
I rooted my tab - in the build.prop I changed the WiFi refresh interval to like 10 minutes, but even that doesn't stop the constant drain!
Point No.5, I can understand your concern here - so far, I've used my tablet vigorously in water. Several times in the bath and once in the shower. All times where successful with the covers tightly closed. Leading on from that, I know this is likely to be un-avoidable, but it seems a bit of a waste having a 'water-resistant' device that responds to water 'touches' on the screen. It makes watching a film a nightmare. I did however install the beta touch block from the ZR, but whenever the screen is touched (constantly in the water) a large label appears in the center of the screen with a slide bar to deactivate it - plus, the screen turns a slightly transparent black (on purpose) meaning it's useless got even a film.
It's a good stab by Sony, let down completely by the software. I've had it since release. so refund is not an option. If it was, I would - on eBay they're only going for half the price I paid so I'm really stuck with it... No 4.2.2 for the WiFi either!
I'm not in agreement with some of your points but in others I do agree. I contacted Sony today as last night this Tablet failed badly IMO. I had the fun job of rebuilding my main server. So I plugged in the tablet to the mains and set up a load of TV to stream from my NAS. A few hours into the job.....silence!! At first I thought I'd left on some power save setting, but no. Despite being plugged in and having about 70% of charge in the battery to start with it drained it totally and the tablet shut down. I don't think it's asking too much to expect it to keep running when plugged into the mains.
I've either got a faulty one or they have a serious design fault.
Sorry to hear you didn't like it but clearly everyone has their own preferences etc. Personally I love the XZ Tablet. I seem to get better battery life than you do, though I've had mine longer so maybe the battery has "settled in" - if they do that I don't know.
The charging times are quite bad I agree but it isn't an issue for me. It has plenty of juice to get through two days for me and I just charge it overnight.
I haven't experienced the lag like you mentioned. I did have it freeze up for about 5 seconds last night but that was the first "issue" I've had. I find the tablet extremely quick and responsive. There is the odd Android lag now and again but nothing that bothers me at all.
Good luck with your next tablet. Maybe wait for the next Nexus 10. That should be a beast.
I am really surprised to see how many people complain about the battery life of this device. Usually I feel that its me who have bad battery on every device while other people praise how good it is.
I just 2 weeks ago flew from Helsinki to Hong Kong and during the flight I watched about half season of game of thrones in HD and played some games. I still had about 25% left after that. I would say its pretty good result after 11 hour flight.
I do have wifi only version, I dont know if it makes any difference.
Screen I think its beautiful. I also had Note 2 but those colors are actually a bit too over-saturated for my taste and I don't like it so much. Of course blacks are much better on the Amoled screen and yes this tablet does have some light bleed on the screen and yes if I start paying attention to it, it is really annoying.
Charging time I can't complain much since I put it charge when I go to sleep and when I wake its back to full and will easily last whole day. I did however have to buy the charging dock because I started to feel that if I take the flap out every day it will eventually wear off (I actually already once managed to get the pin somehow badly and the flap couldn't close properly after that. Thankfully I was able to push it back straight)
After coming from Asus Transformer Infinity I have been so happy with this tablet. I think it is the best 10 inch tablet currently. Yes, better than Nexus 10. Probably the new Nexus 7 have somethings which I do envy and maaaaybe I will get that one also.
I am sorry to hear that you are experienced this with the device. however i felt directly opposite of most or not all of your complaint.
i still enjoy my tablet like day one

+1 to this ^
I was fed up with using a laptop on my lap, so I decided to get a tablet.
I initially went to buy an iPad. Picked up the iPad, picked up the Xperia - no contest. Bought the Xperia. Makes the iPad feel like a brick.
To me, the Xperia is what a tablet should be - so light, so slim, lovely display.
Charging is a bit slow but I use my son's iPad charger and that makes it quicker. I'm just loving the Xperia.

So you're saying that you watched 5 hrs of HD video then played some games for ..... period of time and had 25% of battery left?
Enlighten me Andy as to how.... Screen brightness, volume, Video Player etc etc? I've never got nowhere near that on batteries so I'm trying to establish if it's either the software I use or I just got a bad tablet.
EDIT: My tablet is the 16GB WiFi Also.

auto screen brightness, stock video player. And I think its quite normal get about this. I do travel a lot and usually I have some movies on the tablet and usually during long flights (always Europe to Asia and back flights) I watch at least 3 movies and battery is always fine. I don't play 3D games almost at all but for example World of Goo I can play a lot. And I never used stamina mode or low battery mode.
When going to airplane mode I think that this lasts very well. web browsing uses quite a lot battery.
But I overall I am really happy of the battery lasting. Compared to my current mobile phone HTC One which just dies if I play a bit candy crush.

Ok thanks... I'll test some more as I do really like the tablet but if it's not fit for my purpose it will have to go. I can't use the stock player though as I'm partially deaf and no subs on that. Not to worry, I'll put my ear trumpet in and give it a go with that

Actually now when you mention it I didn't use stock because english is not my native language and its easier for me to follow when I can read the subtitles if some words hard to make out. I used MX Player, it supports subs.

Yeah I use MX, Dice or Archos. All do subs. If you like eye candy in a player, try the Archos one
Well it's charged to 100% so I'll give it another try. And Sony might even reply to my email but I'll not hold my breath on them getting back to me.
Battery life on all such devices is not going to be amazing. There simply has to be a pay off between performance and what the battery can offer.
This is an ultra thin, light tablet with a full HD screen and quad core CPU! WE wanted these parameters now we have them all I see people do who own all the top level devices is moan about the battery life! Same with the mobiles. Until battery manufacturers develop higher performance batteries this is what we simply have to accept. Failing that purchase a low cost low specification tablet or phone then one can reasonably expect a higher usage period.
To the OP. I respect your opinion. One does have to ponder though given your negative feedback, how this tablet managed to win the EISA award 2013-14 for best tablet? I also ponder what exactly you are looking for in a tablet? Can you name a more accomplished Android tablet at present?
All and every tablet, mobile phone, TV, electronic device, will have its positives and negatives. Its finding the balance of what we can live with and accepting some compromises.
I have owned the Asus TF 101, TF 201, Infinity, Toshiba Thrive, Acer a500, and a700.
This Xperia tablet is the best so far. The responsiveness is the best out of all of them. Battery life is not the best but is competitive (the Acer a500 and a700 had the best battery life, with the Sony being competitive with the Asus tablets I had...I never used the keyboard docks for the Transformers though).
The Sony is the slowest charging tablet I have owned though. I have used the Samsung S4 and a 2a Blackberry charger that seems to have sped up the charging so I think the charger Sony included is part of the problem. I have not done any tests to measure the differences in charging, but it certainly is faster using a 3rd party charger.
Agreed with the water resistance; I don't trust the little tabs either, but the water resistance is only a minor feature for me. I was just sick of the poor performance and responsiveness that these other tablets had. I am very picky and while this tablet is not perfect (no tablet is), I can live with this one and I think the grass is always greener.
I was actually wondering about the time it takes for the tablet to charge: could the culprit be the charger ? I also have an Xperia ZL and the chargers are identical: same type, same output, etc.
Maybe Sony didn't bother to release a charger with a higher output for Tablet Z?

Thanks! Not sure which one to get now, want one that is fully waterproof and works normally in water. Otherwise there's no point in getting a tablet for me, my Note 2 will do fine.

Yes, the colors can be over-saturated on the Note 2. But the amazing thing with that device is that you can select 4 different screen modes to fit your personal preference. That's a feature that was missing on the XZT for me, I just wanted the choice to be able to have more vivid colors.

iPad. High resolution screen, high-performance, thin and has what feels like double the battery life compared to the XZT. Sucks that it has iOS though.. like you say, there has to be a pay off. The only reason why I won't buy an iPad.

Probably won because of its slim design, "water resistant" feature and weight? Those are the only things that sets it apart from most other tablets. And in my opinion the most important thing was the water resistance which to me doesn't seem so reliable with this device.
What I want in a tablet is for it to be fully waterproof with no unreliable tabs that could let water through.. no 30 min max. submerged in water up to 1 meter down BS. I want it to function normally when water touches the screen. I want it to have a beautiful screen, which the XZT doesn't have in my opinion. I want it to be fast, have a long battery life and short charging time. If I can't have the waterproof feature, then there's no point for me to buy a tablet.
Can I name a better Android tablet? Since the water resistant feature on the XZT is useless, yes.. Any of the best offerings from other brands that doesn't have a screen with dull colors. I'd rather take one of those than the XZT if I had to choose a tablet.

They are good reasons to not want to keep the tablet, but if they are your requirements you are going to be waiting for a while. It is not really possible currently to make capacitive touchscreens that are sensitive and accurate underwater. You could use a waterproof resistive screen, but anyone who has used one knows how awful they are to use.
You want it waterproof but without port covers, you could have the ports sealed internally instead, but then you would have to dry out each port after use or it would corrode the connectors and short when plugged in wet. They make waterproof camera housings and they always have sealed covers and no touchscreen.
You want it powerful with good battery life, that is easily done, but not in a device this thin.
I'm sure it will be possible to get what you are after eventually, but you're going to be waiting for years, and even then it's probably not going to match up to the devices that don't need to be waterproof with magical port covers.

Make sure your MX player is played in HW mode! In SW mode the video will be using cpu instead of gpu which draining the battery like hell! For my tablet, i used to reach 12h screen on times, usually 10h but sometimes only 8h. And the battery is pretty great.

I'm prepared to wait. For me now, there's no point in buying a tablet if it can't be fully waterproof and have a good screen. I'll just stick with my Note 2 which is basically like a smaller tablet, buying a tablet without waterproof capability would be like buying a large Note 2. Feels like a waste of money to buy an android device that can do everything my Note 2 can but just with a larger screen. So I can wait!

Fair enough, I wanted it mostly for the light weight, decent screen resolution and build quality for web browsing and ebooks and so far it's perfect.
But if I had wanted it mainly for the waterproofing I would be disappointed as well, it would be more honest to call it water resistant or splashproof.
I just though it was worth pointing out that if it actually was fully waterproof and usable underwater with current technology it would be a different machine entirely and useless for what most people who brought it wanted from it.
On the other hand I really wish it had the note's stylus, if it had one it would be great for drawing being as thin as it is.

How would you improve the S6?

I am really like this phone, but coming from an HTC One m8 the battery life is terrible, like I went back to the m7.
I would like to see this exact same phone with something closer to a 3000mAh battery with a ~5.5 inch screen and dual front speakers.
That would have made the decision for me a lot easier between the s6 and m9. The camera is what cinched it for me.
What do you guys think?

The only hardware change I would want is a 3000mAh battery. I really like having the capacitive and home button on the front so putting two speakers on the front would make the bezel too thick. On the software side it would be nice to not have so much bloat from Samsung or an easy way to remove them permanently.
The S6 is one hell of a phone. My personal preferences are:
- On-screen button to replace the physical one
- Front-facing speakers and a better amplifier (although the current one is very good)
- Better quality charging port and jack
- GPE!
Just add a couple mm to the battery/phone - battery life is far worse than expected so far
I would describe the battery as more disappointing than bad. There's this understandable expectation that the newest generation of things will improve on things over the previous, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. To be fair, I remember similar discussions around the initial launch of the M8 and how its battery performance was questionable, so perhaps we'll see improvements over time here?
As far what I would do to improve the phone, there really isn't much. The only part of TouchWiz that feels intrusive is their modification to the notification panel, so I would start there. I really don't need or want the shortcuts it offers and have always wondered why Samsung won't allow me the ability to hide them. I would have also done a better job at the "rounding" of the device. The edges feel sharper and more obvious than on the iPhone 6 and to me, it feels like a distraction from the otherwise great design. That's hair-splitting for sure, but its enough that it still comes across as a lesser build in my opinion.
-another speaker at the top would have been welcome next to IR blaster.
-that new high speed reversible usb port.
-water resistant (why not, with sealed back?) Like S5.
-add back a millimeter and increase battery to 3100.
-bezels and/or back should be like solar panels for charging (like the old Texas instruments calculators) but disguised of course. Slow but a little charge just sitting on desk or table, under natural, or lamp light.
-if not the above solar charging, then how about kinetic charging. I mean 10k steps should get you something back right.
-OPTION TO UNINSTALL bloat if they don't want us to root.
Ya these will be in the S9!

It's been said many times already but needs to be said again: Uninstalling the apps you don't want to use won't gain back any usable storage space because they reside in the system partition which the user can't access.
*Metal back
*3000mah battery
*micro sd slot
*caller notification readout (as on GS5 & Note 4) under language and input settings.

Scrap the metal back then lol.
I didn't check accessibility, just thought it would be in language and input.
I also notice theres no option for increased touch sensitivity (Glove mode) like on the S4-Note 4
I read everywhere about the poor batterylife, but so far mine has treated me very well. It feels about the same as my OnePlus One. I can easily make it through the day.
I'm not a hardcore user any way you slice it though, a lot of Whatsapp, some pictures, some Youtube, quite a lot of browsing. That's about it, but still I'm not dissapointed.
What I did when I got it was install the latest update, then do a factory reset. Maybe that helped?
My biggest issue is the poor reception. I live in the middle of Amsterdam, with every phone before this one I would get full 4G everywhere, but with the S6 I get only the far left milimeter of the signalbar filled. Often even less.
So far it doesn't seem to influence speed much, but I'm a little anxious what happens when I go out of the city or even into my parking garage.

You should check what the signal strength is in dB. You can find it in Phone Status and it is a more accurate measure than the signal strength indicator.
Thanks. I'm now in the office in Amsterdam. Sitting next to a big window on the 5th floor and it's far from densily built here. My reception is -113 dBm. Seems pretty poor to me. I'll check what I have when I get home.
Been checking for a couple of days and it's always -113. Wherever I am, it never changes. Don't really know what to think of it.

I actually noticed the same thing and posted about it in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/lte-signal-indicator-issues-t3083001
Would appreciate it if you could add your experience as well. Was beginning to think I was the only one. To get an *accurate* reading of your dBm, go into your phone dialer and hit *#0011# and look for RSRP. That should be the correct dBm strength.

Done! Thanks for opening the topic. I also thought I was the only one. Glad you're seeing the same behaviour
- Waterproofing/dustproofing, IP67/68
- Dual front-facing speakers
- 4000mAh battery (using SolidEnergy tech)
- Biometric display (fingerprint sensor under screen, on-screen buttons)
- USB Type-C connector
i would've come up with similar force touch tech (like what Apple used in their new laptop) for the home button, making it no longer a physical button and putting it under the glass.

One week with the Redmi Note 4

Received my RN4 last week, and after spending a week with it I am definitely impressed.
Observations
1. Battery life is the phone's strongest suit. Can definitely get even better SOT if I was more careful using this thing, but fact is this is the first phone I've owned that I only need to charge once a day. (See attachment for SOT)
2. Build quality is solid as well, but definitely not top notch. Seams can still felt, and SIM tray is a bit hard to push in.
3. Display is great. Nothing out of the ordinary.
4. Helio X20 is a solid chip, but Javascript performance is underwhelming. Does not appear to have many benefits over the SD650.
5. Camera is underwhelming, quality is around the level of the Moto X 2014, but PD focus is quick and accurate, unlike the CDAF on the X14.
6. MIUI is not as intrusive as most Western media will have you believe, but I do not like the aggressiveness with which it kills background processes. GSam Battery monitor doesnt work reliably as it always gets kicked.
7. One handed usage is poor. The next model could definitely use smaller bezels on the X axis.
8. I got an update last week for "bug fixes", but was strangely 1.3GB big and took over an hour to download and install.
Overall, for $200, I'm definitely impressed. Can't say I feel a noticeable performance difference with my last phone, the Galaxy S7. Only place I can feel I got what I paired for is the camera.

Thanks for the feedback, I also have an S7 and on the verge of selling to buy either the note 4 or the redmi pro. I know it will generally be a downgrade especially in terms of camera as nothing can touch the S7. But it seems a great device and would let me free up some cash. The redmi pro seems to have a better camera than the RN4 although a bit gimmicky with its dual cams, but both pack nice builds and big batteries. Although I think the RN4's finger print scanner looks better and is in a better location, I'm not really that impressed with the S7's as it still needs to be pushed and isn't that accurate. How do you find audio quality over say a pair of headphones compared to the S7?

Very loud, and decently clean and crisp too. There seems to be some decent audio equipment on this thing, both speakers and headphone, and I suspect there may be a discrete DAC on this, impressive for a $200 device. I went for the RN4 over the Pro for one reason and one reason only: there is an official global ROM out for this phone, while the Pro would require me to install GP package through a third-party solution.
I can definitely say that the FPS is way better on the back. Very accurate, and as long as I don't give it some super-weird angle it authenticates me without fail, quicker and more accurately than the S7.

Great that's good to hear, I assumed there was a global rom for the pro but must have been something else I seen. I had a feeling the finger print scanner was better, I do find the S7's quite fussy and a lot of times I exceed the try limit and have to wait 30 secs[emoji34].
I really do appreciate the camera on the S7, although from the reviews I've watched the RN4 seems to have very quick auto focus and capture speeds. It obviously seems to suffer in low light but no phone is immune from this really only to lesser extents. I generally take most photos outside in good conditions anyway and usually of the kids where a quick shutter is needed. The camera app also seems fast to launch as well which again is an important to be able to snap photos quickly.

Fingerprint scanner really is great. Worlds better than the S7. Location isn't always ideal for when the phone is on a table top, but it is great when pulling the phone out of the pocket. I suspect that the only way to solve this is give people two Fingerprint scanners
Camera launches quickly and focus is reliable. Better than my 2014 Moto X ever was. Shutter is not as fast as the reviews make it out to be, but that may be because I have HDR on Auto, and HDR photos do take a while to process. Outside photos are reasonably crisp, inside the noise starts to become uncontrollable. Remember to go to Settings and select image quality "High" and enable "Enhance lowlight pictures automatically" when you get this phone. Hugely important, as the default Medium setting is too aggressive in compressing.

I have been using RN4 for 2 weeks. And I do agree most of the views.
1. Battery: it seems not that good if you care about the numbers. But the overall performance is pretty good. Playing some 3d games with performance for an hour costs less than 10%.
2. CPU: I don't think this is a big leap as I can't from Nexus 5. The performance is not overkill. And I don't feel anything is super smooth. I guess the reason is that 10 cores are still to much for an Android system to operate with. I doubt the kernel fully utilizes the CPU.
3. Camera: don't expect much on it even though they claimed it's 16MP. The quality is quite glitchy in my opinion. If you really care about the quality of the camera on your phone, consider carefully. Despite the quality, the speed is fine as the focus, HDR and burst mode work perfectly fine.
4. MIUI: I just want a CM. That's it.
5. Price: this is the most pulling reason for me to buy this. You can just switch to a new one if this breaks somehow.
Hello.
My name is Gabriel, from Romania.
I have a redminote 4 since 25 october 2016.
Since yesterday it doesn't display, in the upper right corner, the icon for mobile data - you know, the H, or H+, or 4G or 3G, next to mobile network signal icon.
The mobile data connection is working good, but the fact that the phone is connected to mobile data is not displayed any more.
Is there any setting for this?
Thanks.

Thanks.

Did you solve this? Are you on the global rom?

No.
I had the intention to perform a factory reset during this weekend, but I didn't, I was too busy with other things.
And yes, is the Global ROM - I have Romanian language (not only...)
Thanks.

A factory reset is probably the best option take first although it is a pain having to backup/ set everything up again.

Hello
I have black screen with my Redmi Note 4 but led of charge work have you some ideas how can i solve this issue?
Thanks
2 weeks here...
I bought the Redmi Note 4 - S625 32 GB version as a replacement for another phone from another vendor, my old phone had the same hardware configuration, but was greatly lagging on performance, battery life and customization.
I have long decided on the Redmi, and have gone through several resources and reviews online, and was so far satisfied with what I read.
I was able to buy it at a discounted price in Egypt (USD 160), this is of course not a bargain for the global price, yet locally it was good compared to other similar devices.
I'll go through every aspect of my experience with the phone and provide you with my conclusion in the end.
The phone comes in a small box compared to other phones of the same size, the phone fits in exactly, with the charger and the charging cable, the extra space could've been better used to add earphones to the bundle, something Xiaomi should consider in the future, is to throw in one of their premium earphones.
The phone size is slim and nice to hold, something that counts for it, considering the huge 4100mA battery, I was unfortunate to buy the black edition, which is very prone to fingerprints and you can never keep it clean, let alone it also seemed scratch prone, I didn't want to risk it therefore the first thing I had to do was to go for a silicon cover.
Also the screen glass is clear with smooth edges, and gives the phone a very elegant look, yet I read it's not gorilla glass, so I had to go for a glass screen protector.
The screen is large enough with some bevel edges that could be improved in the future.
The dual SIM slot is an amazing idea, yet with a bit of better design I guess we can squeeze in a place for a memory card.
The camera and fingerprint sensor are very well placed and nice to use, having the camera non-protruding is a good design point, protecting the camera cover from scratches.
I don't mind the camera being 13MP, it has a clear quality, works well with the camera app, and is quiet responsive, I've seen cameras with higher resolution, but were a pain to operate, so good job Xiaomi.
The screen is clear and pleasant to use, I have even use it to watch movies using a VR box with no problems, it is also quiet visible in the sun with bright colors.
One thing I really liked about this phone, is its battery life, I guess Xiaomi went to great effort to squeeze much power into the battery space, and to optimize the power use by applications, clearly there is a power optimization software layer added to the OS to perform this well, I am a heavy user, having the phone in hand all day with the screen on, reading, watching videos, and streaming internet videos and music in the car all day, using maps and GPS applications, and acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot. Still at night, before sleeping, I plug the charger while the phone is at 40%, keeping me assured that even if I forget to charge the phone, it will remain there for another day of moderate use. BATTERY LIFE ON THIS PHONE IS AMAZING.
I have seen people complain that it doesn’t have a fast charging capability, yet it's no problem with a phone that can withhold its charge for two days.
The good thing about this phone is that it has all connectivity features of other similar phones, except for the NFC, which is becoming a defacto nowadays, though the FM radio is good and launches without any headphone connected, however the lack of RDS is a bit annoying, in addition to the fact that the radio interface is boring and non-themeable, I have posted this suggestion in the MIUI forum.
Software performance on this phone is amazing, and the dual app capability is extra nice, it is better than having the second space activated, specially with the availability of individual app locking capability, I can have my work and personal applications in the same space, while giving my work applications the necessary security level required. This beats all other phones offering second space while hogging the memory and system resources, and affecting the performance.
Also Xiaomi's keeping to its promise of a very responsive MIUI, even with an alternative launcher (I'll come to that later), I'm getting a very good performance, no launch delays, no botchy performance, etc... Which shows that enough effort has been put into OS optimization.
I haven't tried installing a custom OS yet, and this is mainly due to the fact that the factory OS is very well performing and doesn't need further optimization, till now!!
I had to resort to installing a third party launcher (Nova Launcher), since I didn't really like the way MIUI launcher treats the applications, without an application drawer, desktops can become really cluttered, specially that I always test new apps and remove them regularly. This may be convenient for iPhone users, but a no no in our Android world, Xiaomi should reconsider.
A nice addition to the UI is the floating ball, it comes with useful shortcuts, but to change them you have to dig deep into the settings, certainly there should be a better way to do this, still it is a good addition.
The screenshot shortcut saves a shot of the current screen and can later send you to the editing part if you need to crop and edit your shot, it would be better if a crop control can appear when a screenshot is requested, so that we can directly choose which part of the screen we want to capture and share directly.
The phone came with android marshmallow, but as soon as I started using it, a new update with nougat was pushed, I also guess and Oreo version in in the pipeline, still you can have the Oreo taste from any custom rom available for this phone, which are really numerous in comparison to phones from other vendors, I guess Xiaomi should capitalize on this as being one of the most custom ROM friendly phones.
The phone, contacts, and messaging native aps are quiet usable, and so far I haven't faced any problem with them, in comparison to other phones that sometimes struggled with my 1500 entry contact list, the Xiaomi is fully capable of handling such a contact list dispersed among two contact providers (google contact and exchange server), and fully capable of flawlessly handling them.
One small glitch with the messaging app is the inability to delete the newly received SMS from the notification area, something that is usually needed nowadays.
Coming to the notification area, I've seen it better implemented in other phones or ROM versions, where you can get full access to the complete message, and be able control it (delete or reply) from the notification area, I know that in MIUI there is the capability to expand the notification for more details by a two finger swipe, but this is impossible with one handed operation.
The phone also comes with nice extra applications, the security app is quiet useful, and hopefully it does what it promises in the background.
The remote app is also a great addition, making you able to control a vast list of IR enabled devices; yet it should be a good addition to be able to add and customize new non-listed devices, such as for example non-standard android tv boxes.
In conclusion:
I really love this phone and don't regret the investment I put in it, Xiaomi is on a very good track, it should soon reach and surpass market leaders if it keeps building such impressive devices with affordable prices, also having that MIUI forum and its community is a good addition of keeping the users close to the vendor.
My recommendation is to work on the software enhancements requested by the users.
My recommendations to the new buyers, is to install good screen and body protection, stay away from the black version, and invest in a good quality headphones to enjoy your Xiaomi.

Anyone feeling a bit let down? V20 review

I am trying to convince myself that I am wrong or somehow biased, but I don't think I am in this situation. I am a phone junkie and I bounce between devices quickly. In the last 6 months I have had the Axon 7, HTC 10 (still have, S-off'd with Unlocked GSM firmware/ software), Nexus 6P, HTC M9, s7 edge, s6 edge+, iphone 7 plus, Droid Turbo, and now the V20. I will say that over all, the V20 is built beautifully and performs well. The battery life is a bit weaker than I was hoping, just like the HTC 10, the quick charge 3.0 almost covers that short coming. The things that are making me disappointed though are as follows:
LG Skin / UI : Feels a little off, made up a bit by using Nova launcher, but everyone knows it won't remove it all...
Performance: I might be expecting a bit much, but I have had my device slow down (to unbearable lag / waiting on apps to switch/come up) more than a handful of times requiring a reboot
Battery Life: As stated above, the battery life is pretty week and I find myself having to top up a towards 6 pm, it does charge quickly, but find that a little sad.
Camera: This is where I am shocked. The camera overall doesn't live up to what I expected or how it was advertised. In ideal situations, it can take good photos, and I mean GOOD, not Great. If you don't switch to manual and tweak everything out, you will be sadly disappointed. Auto focus has a hard time locking in, can get a bit of grain / noise, and if there is movement or action, good luck. In video mode or if you flip into manual mode, you can get much better results, but in the heat of the moment, not everyone will be quick to get it ready in time to get that shot. In low light situations, it has been very disappointing. The lag time between the flash / focus and getting a picture off, I end up with a blurry out of focus picture most of the time. I am basing this off pictures I take of my young daughter. The camera on the HTC 10, Axon 7, iPhone 7 plus, S7 edge, and S6 edge+ all out perform in these situations. For a phone/device that is supposed to be built around photography and video, it has been a major disappointment. the Main camera/sensor is decent, but the zoom/cropped area is a bit small. The wide angle does cover a lot more at the cost of resolution. I am hoping that LG does something to address this in software/firmware updates, but as of now, it is a huge let down.
Audio: The single firing speaker does an admirable job for playing music, speaker phone on the other hand is a somewhat weak and sometimes hard to hear, even when driving in silent vehicle with the windows closed. The Quad DAC has also let me down. After the DAC in the Axon 7 and the HTC 10, I am not impressed. It does improve the audio, but not as well as the competition. With the DAC enabled and audio all the way up, the volume level is weak. With the same headphones that I used in the Axon 7 and the HTC 10, I have no problem hearing the outside noise. I also don't feel that it is nearly as tweakable / noticeable as the HTC 10. When I had the DAC on the HTC 10 on, I could immediately tell the difference and the Highs, Mids, and Lows were way easier to notice / spot changes on. Again, maybe software updates may resolve this, but definitely a let down for me.
Overall: The phone is beautiful. For a phone with removable battery, it honestly feels like a unibody device. I am a bit disappointed in all phone manufacturers currently going to this 2.5D curved glass for no good reason, making getting tempered glass protectors a joke majority of the time. The software overall is fairly smooth. The screen is above average and the secondary screen has become second nature to me. Being able to snap a wide angle shot when others can't definitely something that has lead to people asking me what phone I am using. Had I not gone through all the phones I have in the last 6 months, I may have been way more impressed. As a flagship device, I will say it comes close to delivering what was promised. Had the Note 7 not failed miserably with the exploding issue, I think the V20 would have easily been eclipsed. This phone gets so close in many departments, but doesn't quite nail them down. Considering there is nothing else in the market that draws my attention, I will try and see if it makes it through the initial growing pains that might be solved with software updates.
Before anyone wants to say I forgot about the Pixel, no, I didn't. After having the HTC 10 (which I still have and love as a backup device) and playing with the Pixel, I see absolutely no reason to waste the money on the sad excuse of a flagship device at the same taxing price as an apple product. How google basically took the HTC 10, made it ugly , went with onscreen buttons and a whole lot of bezel, and took away removable storage but is still succeeding with it is beyond me. Yes it has an "amazing camera", assistant (you can get with root on the v20 and nexus 6p), and can charge the battery super fast, but the price tag and lack of innovation is a deal breaker.
So, please, let me know if you agree or disagree. I have been trying to be unbiased and love this phone. Am I being unreasonable, or is it really just a device that got close to the finish line and just gave up?
I think it all depends on what your needs are. We know it doesn't have the best camera. It's very competitive, but not the best. Performance can be fixed with updates. I suspect that LG rushed the ROM to be the first to have Nougat, which was one of their selling points for this phone. Battery life depends on your usage. LG's Quantum displays are horribly inefficient, so the screen is your primary battery drain, but my understanding is that idle drain is very good. Then you have fast charging and one of the few phones that you can instantly go to 100% on by swapping batteries.
For me, this is the only phone that checks all of my requirements: Functional always-on-display, IR blaster, 5.7"+ screen, good camera, removable battery and SD card. So, I'm buying the complete package, not because it's the best at everything. Every single phone has shortcomings. You need to decide which ones you can live with and buy your next device based on that criteria.
I'm with you, I thought the camera was quite a disappointment when shooting in auto mode. I liked the phone a lot (coming from a Nexus 6p) and if the camera had been good it would have been a no-brainer for me, because as greyhulk says it checks most, if not all, the boxes. But I need a camera that shoots good pics in auto mode. Sent it back.
Also disappointed with the camera. Especially after coming from the Note 7..
Settings/Developer Options/ Tick on "Force GPU Rendering" should make your beast smoother/snappier. So any kind of lag should disappear!
If root available try L Speed/Entropy/fstrim apps found on Play Store!
LG V20 & LG G5 are snappy beasts and are well optimised with the Snapdragon 820 and is better than Samsung!
Battery is my main disappointment. Even with minimal use I have only made it an entire day once. Something keeps eating battery while the phone is idle and I have yet to track it down. I suspect it is an app that needs a Nougat update. Same usage and set of apps on the S7 Edge and Note 7 would usually leave me near 50% at the end of the day.
Have to say I disagree.
The Hi-Fi is plenty loud enough and noticeably changes on the go. I have noticed though, it depends on the headphones that you are using. I have used 4 different sets. And each pair gave different results.
The camera is great. Video is turning out to be exactly as expected. As for the camera, it doesn't grab the shot in the first try every time and its nothing a tap of the screen and refocus hasn't been able to fix. But than again I haven't had a camera phone that has been able to take the shot first time every time.
Battery, that's a user to user base question. The other day I was able to get 32 hours out of my battery. But than on the other hand with very heavy use I only got 6.5 hours.
Weird I get about the same battery life as I did with my note 7. When at work I use the phone about the same amount every day 12 hr shifts and I am between. 50 to 70 percent

I think your disappointment stems from using so many current generation phones, lets face it most years the hardware upgrades (specifically processors) match each other.
The HTC 10 runs the same hardware as the LG v20, so you've experienced it already. S7 has the same processor as well (assuming its the Qualcomm version) so it's not a big difference compared to someone coming from last generation phones.
Like for me I am coming from a v10 which had an outdated processor out the gate (others were using 810 while the v10 had the 808 due to overheating issues with the 810). The phone is literally over twice as fast as the v10 so I would certainly see a difference compared to you coming from the same generation of processors.
I don't own the phone yet but I will say it's a disappointment to see the camera being a letdown in reviews when you consider that the camera was the big feature of the v10.
Battery doesn't sound all that great either but it's got to be better than the v10. I am sure this will be remedied by 3rd party extended batteries that we will hopefully see. My v10 battery sucked until I upgraded to a 9000 mAh Zerolemon battery pack.

Hello! What specifically does the "Force GPU Rendering" option?
I think you will settle with the Porsche Design Mate 9. Just a feeling lol
Why's there no option for ambivalence or just predictable? Just look at the stats and you pretty much know what you're getting. I'm happy with this phone after the $200 off and assuming I get the ~$150 headphone offer. I would be unhappy for full list price without those promos. For the price w/promos there just isn't anything comparable.
The display is the worst part of this phone for me. AMOLED just beats LCD anyway you slice it, this phone looks badly washed out and the auto brightness does weird things. Also the viewing angles are wonky, I was used to being able to use my phone at extreme angles but now I find myself lifting the phone up more. If this phone had AMOLED it would be a solid 9.9/10 for me, of course I knew I wouldn't like the screen when I bought it I just couldn't find a solid AMOLED phone. I don't particularly like the fingerprint reader position, have to pick it up off a table to use it and I've found my finger accidentally turns the screen on sometimes when I put it in my pocket. The second screen is nice for changing tracks or seeing what track is playing (or seeing the time at night without going blind), but it sucks for notifications. I miss my notification LED and my Qi charging.
Other than that this phone is pretty solid. I'm getting almost identical battery life that my Note 7 got, namely about 2 days. The standby battery life is phenomenal, I usually lose 1-2% overnight even with the second screen on. I love the removable battery so I don't have to worry about the battery dying before I'm ready to get rid of the phone. I'm no audiophile, so to me this phone is the best audio experience I've ever had with a phone hands down. Even streaming at just 192kbps this phone really makes my Shure SE215's sing. The camera is noticeably worse than the Note 7 at low light but it's still the 2nd best camera on a phone I've seen. Close up pictures have lots of nice detail and that's the kind of pictures I usually take. It focuses quickly and locks focus down better than the Note 7 did. For the kinds of the pictures I take in fact this camera is better, unlike my Samsungs this phone's auto white balance mode works correctly. The whole phone feels quick and snappy, comparable to the Note. I'm getting slightly better signal than I've ever gotten, in fact the wifi is much stronger than either of my Note 7's were.
I like the look of the phone and it feels great in my hands, which although not as great as the all glass Note 7, it feels like I could drop it and have nothing to worry about. I don't find the UI intrusive or laggy, eventually I'll swap over to nova prime once I'm tired of stock. For me it ticks all the right boxes of keeping old features rather than heading the apple direction and removing everything. Removable battery, SD card, IR Blaster, headphone jack, USB C, etc For that reason alone I think it's worth supporting LG
I agree
Main reasons I am keeping it are the $200 off, switched to T-mobile from VZW, and they are paying off the ETF so saving that money and the headphones makes the phone ideally almost free to me. For the full retail, I would return it in a heartbeat. People have hit it on the head that it really might be the fact the the Snapdragon 820 and the 4 GB ram is now getting long in the tooth. The camera can produce some nice pictures in manual mode, so I try to jump to that right away, but just a bit of a hassle to be on the ball to take a simple pic. With moderate light and close up, it does perform well. I can't really control lighting at all times and try and get my daughter up close and still when a picture moment comes though, the s7 handled it much better. I am going to try some different headphones to see if it is just the main pair I use that is letting me down. For the money / hardware, I think the Axon is the better bang for the buck with the AMOLED screen and the all carrier support. The speakers on that are ridiculous and the DAC was solid. This phone over all falls somewhere in the 7.5-8 /10 for me. Between the V20 and the HTC 10 I'll be good til the next wave of Flagships hit. I just have the feeling that LG pushed it out in a hurry to capitalize on the Note 7 flop and they could've polished it up a lot more. I can see them making the camera more responsive in low light and possibly addressing the battery life / hifi-dac customization / volume in the updates. It does a lot right but overall I was expecting and hoping for more from LG when they have had the perfect shot to grab the market. So far I am seeing the responses that seem line up with my expectation. Thanks everyone for taking the time to read and respond!

I came from the LG Nexus 5x and I loved that phone. While it's only been a few days, I am more than happy with the V20.
I get a phone through work, but upgraded on my own last year to the 5x. So when I cracked my screen a few weeks ago, I went through work this time. Options were limited on AT&T and since I'm gonna be stuck with a phone for 2 years I wanted the newest phone I could get without "compromising" what I'd wanted in a phone. I also didn't want to settle for a year old phone or switch to the iPhone (Android since 2010 and likely forever).
Anyway, I say all that to say that the V20 was never on my radar, mostly because of the size, even though I'd previously had the Note 2, 3 and briefly 4. I'd been very happy with the size and feel of the 5x, but the battery life was horrendous. Basically anything would have been an upgrade, and the V20 does more than I need in the battery department. If I can get to my bed before needing a charge, I'm a happy man, since I'd be charging around lunch on a daily basis before.
I was already used to the fingerprint sensor and love the fact it's on the back on the V20 as well. I can deal with the volume buttons swapped and the power button moving to the fingerprint sensor. It was a little odd at first but I'm used to it already.
Again, the camera and screen on the 5x was mediocre so anything would be better. And again the V20 checks both of those boxes; huge, vibrant screen, and pictures that look beautiful to my eye. If you're going from newest flagship to newest flagship an argument can be made on those points, but if you're upgrading after a year + the hardware is always going to be better, even if you find some flaws, and IMO the V20 does great in both categories.
The removable battery does have its pros. A few years ago it was a 'must-have' for me, but nowadays I'd taker water/dust proofing over it. Not a deal breaker though. The SD card slot IS however a wonderful thing. Despite the 64 GB internal, I love being able to add and not worry about space. I've had my local music library backed up to an SD card for quite a while and it's so convenient to have that at my disposal locally (no network connection needed).
The software. Not much better than PURE Android and rooting has always been a priority for me. BUT, stability ultimately is the most important thing on a phone to me now. Being able to lower DPI via adb shell is huge. Really not having TiBu or the ability to remove some carrier apps is about the worst left we can't do. And to be honest, it's easily overlooked. Is it annoying AF we can't remove everything we don't want? Absolutely. But said apps can be hidden with certain launchers, and I've come to just ignore them in the app drawer, forgetting they're even there.
Add in the FM radio (so novel yet so great), Second Screen (which I actually could use some tips on getting the most out of) and I'm digging this phone. Is LG's UI a little clunky? Yea, but I'll live. And using something new is refreshing, honestly.
It's only been a few days but I'm happy with this device and have no regrets. The V20 may also get me back on the Phablet train, being unable to use something smaller as they feel like toys. I've not gone a full 2 years without upgrading in quite some time. This phone is going to be the test.

I agree with what you say. I think my let down is from moving from flagship to flagship all into the same time frame. The coming from any device before the snapdragon 820 and a quad HD screen, this thing is a major upgrade. I agree that the fingerprint scanner is best on back... Loved it on the nexus 6p and the axon 7. I just sold my htc 10 so I'm committed to the v20. Holding out til something amazing comes this way...

I agree. Top tier amoled should've been here. Probably would've improved the already great battery life another 20%ish. And notification LED would've been awesome. Yeah yeah. I know we have second screen, but I don't use it. Probably why I get 6h+SOT all the time. 8h 1m was my best and I had 3% left. I get 7h+ often. Standby time is incredible. Hasn't been consistent for me but probably lose 1% about every 5h average. Need to root and get adblocking. That will probably improve battery life even more. Hoping a custom kernel with only modification of voltage settings will help too. Tired of all these unstable kernels with features I don't use or care.about. haven't stuck with a custom kernel since...maybe note2. It has been awhile. Just roll with stock kernel since no dev wants to make a simple kernel with voltage adjustments. Not paying anymore devs on kernels until they deliver. I've paid upfront twice and font nothing in return. Scumbags.and I hope the fingerprint scanner has features. Features like being able to use as track pad or minimum that uses swipes for shortcuts like the pixel. That would be friggin' awesome. And aside from camera on auto not being consistent the phone otherwise is almost flawless. I've gotten accustomed to the camera on auto though. Multiple pictures and using focus at different spots has helped tremendously. I've been able to tweak my screen close to accurate by eyeballing it so pictures look like the scenery on screen now. Got to test video and bi def recording today at veterans day parade. Both exceeded my high expectations. Just need slmevody to find binning of chips which I made a dedicated thread for but nobody answered. I've looked everywhere. And one of first things I do when I root is customize the boot up screen. Boring. Very boring and.typical of T-Mobile. I've only had to reboot for sim or micro SD reasons though. Very very stable. Micro SD isn't up to par unless I have root. Nonetheless I've been able to work around it. Just had to take care out. And everybody keeps saying IR blaster. I think our IT is a transceiver. Supposedly it can learn but I haven't tried yet. R.I.P. remotes if it indeed can learn. LG did good. Seems rushed but this is truly a flagship phone in many ways. Swappable battery in 2016on a flagship. Say what? LG needs to step it up on the accessories. Ready to buy a 6 pack of batteries. I got in on the $51 deal for the BCK-5200 package on Amazon. Now just need a good sale on batteries.
Coming from a note 7 I have mixed feelings. It ticks a lot of the boxes but I miss waterproof, the great samsung screens and I knew about those when I bought. The camera really disappointed me though. I was expecting it to take way better pics than it does. Spoiled from the note 7 I suppose. I didn't realize before buying it that it had the IR blaster and I had really been missing that from my s5. Nice to not have to hunt for remotes anymore. Its not ideal, but for someone like me that over 5.7" screen is a requirement it really is the best second choice to my old note 7. The bootloader sucks too. I had gotten out of the habit of reroming phones since samsung pay and now that I am off samsung I thought it would be fun to start that again. But nope. I have a sprint one and it seems to be non rootable at the moment.

I do think a little bit of my dissapointment in the camera is not genuine. I am mainly comparing shots taken with this phones camera viewed on this phones screen to shots taken by the note 7 on the note 7's screen. The same photo would of course pop more on the amoled screen even if it was the same camera so thats part of the disappointment. But even still I think the note 7 took way better pics.
I love the phone other than no root, the camera I'm not really disappointed because I'm no photographer, the IR blaster is a must thank you LG, Samsung what are you thinking. The removable battery isn't a big deal since the battery does pretty good. If it was water proof that would top it off.

You gotta love this phone

I've owned this great Nexus 6 since shortly after it was introduced. I've loved it since day 1. Lately I've been having problems with the USB connector. It was loose and the charging cable was constantly falling out. So I figured it was time to move on to a new phone. I hastily ordered a new Pixel 2 XL on Swappa without a second thought... it was was afterall the newest "Nexus".
I anticipated its arrival for a week. When it arrived I opened it up and did just a very minimal setup, just so I could see the settings. I was underwhelmed and immediately realized there was nothing about it that was better than the Nexus.
It had great specs, but nothing that was very exciting. It is said to have a spectacular camera, but that isn't a priority. I was thinking about unlocking the bootloader, flashing a rom and rooting. But I would end up with nothing better than the Nexus. So I did nothing but put it back in the box, list it on Swappa, sold it, and shipped it.
I found someone who said they would fix the USB connector, so I took it to his shop, he fixed it and I paid him $25 for his trouble even though he didn't charge me for a minute's work.
Even though the purchase and sale cost me some money, I am so pleased to have a renewed appreciation for my Nexus. There isn't a better phone on the market for me. I'm running Nitrogen 8.1 ROM and couldn't be happier.
The other man's grass is always greener.
I recently "upgraded" from my N6 to the OP5T 128GB version. My USB charge port is loose as well. I also have some screen burn starting from the bottom of the screen fading up. Mine pretty much needs a complete overall to make it like new again. I mainly use it for gaming. So, after some thorough research I chose the OP5T. I couldn't be more pleased with the OP5T. I did a minimal setup at first just like you did. I tested everything out first before customizing it. I then decided that I liked it enough to proceed with customization. Unlocked BL, rooted, running AICP 13.1 w/ EX Kernel. Dam this thing is lightning fast. Good camera. Excellent battery life. Excellent SOT. Still got to keep the 3.5mm jack. Quick charging with that Dash Charger. I do miss the front-facing speakers.
AS I 've said in many threads Phone makers have not made phone as good since
Over Priced and they always missing something
Headphone jacks Dual Speakers 2K Screen no NFC or Wireless changing
why just bought a new Battery Will run my another 2 years.
Bought it used in late 2017 and can't believe how much I missed out - terrific compared to devices I previously owned such as the mate 7 and note 4, direct ompetitors

2014 was the peak in terms of hardware enhancement for me, you had 1080p screens standardizing after 2013, emphasis on battery life from lots of manufacturers, much more efficient chipsets particularly the 801. Phablets started to become a bit more accessible after the note 3 monopoly. Stock android still had some official love with M8/S5 google play editions. I've traded a lot of phones for AOSP Roms but almost all 2013/2014, perfect combination of hardware and software
After that and the Iphone 6 the competition centered around niche devices emulating it. Additions that are so insignificant and obviously made to entice people away for the Iphone's juicy profit margin. The S9 is the saddest example of this. Its high time someone breaks through with a major innovative product like the N-series days and Iphone.
Agreed!

I have Nexus 6 in mint condition I was facing some lag and general slow performance on stock Nougat 7.1. but then I installed Nitrogen OS Oreo 8.1 and boy it's fast!
Sorry, but the pixel 2 is miles better than the N6 performance wise. I only returned mine because it had GPS issues otherwise I never would have looked back. The pixel 1 however was only a minor upgrade.

Pixel suck here a few reasons why .
No headphone Jack Display Problems Burn-In Concerns 2-Year Warranty
Quality Control Issues at Factory and I could go on
What peace of crap for $1000 CND DOllars + tax
They made nothing better then Nexus 6 yes you lose some speed but the upgrade is not worth a $1000 CND
I like Nexus Program it showed people how phone could made well and not break the bank
The more bells and whistle the higher the Price and less Quality Control
No headphone jack I am sorry I like my headphone Jack
I'll keep this phone atleast 2 more years.
Nexus 6 was one phone done right. Even today it still looks pretty awesome.

Exactly what I'm thinking for upgrade. How do you compare the speakers though?
Just dug out my shamu and flashed the latest linage OS. Still love the phone. It was years ahead of its time! I have had every single Nexus and pixel since and while the camera is vastly improved as is battery life on the pixels, Little else is all that impressive over the good ole shamu. I will say however that my daily drivers are now OnePlus devices, had the 5, 5T and now the 6. Very impressed and like them a lot. Much better replacement choice for the shamu user.. At least if you don't have Verizon...
Kind of in the same dilemma as you guys, I have a Nexus 6 right now and am considering an upgrade when the Pixel 3's come out, I was considering the 3XL, or possibly the 3 but then gave some thought to going with the 2XL and saving a bunch of cash. The 3XL is looking to be at least $1,000 or around $43/month added to my Fi bill, while the 2XL will likely drop significantly in price, possibly around $400 or about $17/month.
My biggest issues with my N6 right now are battery life and the USB port has been problematic for a couple years but I have dealt with it, but it's getting to the point where's it's extremely difficult to get it to recognize the cable being plugged in. So, I got a wireless charger for the house and the car, I think because the curve of the phone they're both a little finicky but I think I have found the "sweet spot" in where to set the phone so they both work, so that helps a lot with the USB port issue. I could spend about $20 and replace the battery and it likely would be very worth it, might do it even if I upgrade the phone just to have a backup or one to play music off of in the garage.
My daily usage mostly consists of a little web browsing, playing music quite a bit,GPS when needed, couple of games when waiting for Dr appointments and stuff like that but not much otherwise. I don't take many pics, just some here and there and would like the speed to be better but for the amount I use it the camera isn't a big selling point to me. With that said what are your thoughts on just getting a new battery, upgrade to the 2XL or one of the 3's when they come out?

This is where I am at as well. Minus my USB seems to be working. I feel changing the battery would help me out as well. The more reading I do, the more apprehensive I am. I see reports of no change after battery change, or wireless charging no longer works, or cutting the power button cable. I just don't even want to deal with that. I also read that a user took his phone into a battery place and they broke his phone. Ended up giving him $250 for the device. So I am dealing with my Nexus 6. I am also debating on a Pixel XL 2. The Pixel 3 is way out of my price range.

I've swapped batteries recently, and I can tell You that only damage You can do is basically when removing backcover, and thats easily avoidable if You're careful. Under the backplate only thing that might get damaged is the volume/power ribbon and it goes from height of volume/power buttons up till around top of the phone. Oh, and the frame can get damaged too, but thats extreme case, since the mid section of the frame (under where the battery and wireless charging coil sits) can survive bending, just something to keep in mind when separating the backcover (If it sticks hard to the cover, just warm it up some more and separate with plastic card/carefully with something made from metal). After the backcover is gone You're basically set .
Looks like a lot of N6 users have this problem with the USB connector. Mine charges only under a certain angle but i'm not buying a new phone

I had this issue and thought it was toast. Got a toothpick and whittled it down so it fit around inside the entire port. Cleaned a whole lot of crap out of it and now it charges like it was brand new.
Phone is still functional with lineageOS for normal activities. youtube and browsing. I still prefer the 16:9 even if it makes the phone wide. The games i play on the n6 vs the pixel xl 2 are sluggish in comparison. I'm about to use it and slap a sprint BYOD sim into it.
I think those complaining about the price of the Pixels are forgetting that the Nexus 6 was very expensive when it came out. Having bought a Nexus 4 previously I was interested in a Nexus 6 but I could not justify the expense to myself. Eventually after the release of the 6P a local store had some remaining 6s and reduced the price to where I could justify buying one. But they were as expensive as flagships of the time.
The same has happened with the Pixel, a couple of months ago the last few new ones on sale locally were reduced and I bought a Pixel XL. I wanted something new, with developer support and with a headphone socket.
But in some ways the Pixel XL is less than a Nexus 6, notably there is no notification LED and the screen is smaller and especially narrower. I am a Linux server admin and one of the things I occasionally do is SSH to a server, and the Pixel XL screen isn't as good for that. Sure it's faster but I don't really need a faster CPU.
The whole trend to make narrower screens and remove useful features like notification LEDs and headphone sockets is making newer smartphones worse. So I hope to keep using the Nexus 6 for a while yet. I bought a wireless charging pad so that I would not wear out the USB socket as quickly. I use double tap to wake in order to not wear out the power/wake button (my Nexus 4 suffers from a power button which now needs a good push to work).

Yeah I just purchased a nexus 6 this year, and it had a bad battery. So being I have a little experience in the field of phones, I ordered a battery and I carefully opened it up. - I got it all apart and changed the battery out, when I had finished all worked as intended. It isn't too difficult to do. :good:

I nearly agree. The Nexus 6 was a great phone. Well ahead of its time in many/most respects. In some ways, I did find the pixel2xl a bit of a downgrade, in particular, while both are called a "6 inch", the Nexus 6 is most definitely bigger. Especially its width, which is the most important dimension since width dictates the utility of the on screen keyboard. I found the on screen keyboard on the N6 to be "adequate", and on the P2XL, I find it to be "very challenging". Also the lack of wireless charging.
You mention the camera. To be honest, I can't much tell the difference between the cameras, except that the p2xl is ***FASTER*** and more stable (mostly affects video). The image quality is roughly the same. N6 was way ahead of its time in that respect as well, even throwing in OIS, which wasn't repeated until... P2XL. The P1's EIS makes your brain hurt -- motions are very unnatural on it. The EIS+OIS combination on the P2 really is incredible though.
But the big issue with the N6? No more support from Google, and I just don't have time to keep it up myself, nor the desire to wade through buggy "kitchen sink" system images hacked up by high school kids who want to bloat it out with completely useless and half baked "features". The phone has to actually work reliably, and so from that point of view, it was time to move on. My service provider has also upgraded from HSPA to LTE, but the N6 only supports LTE on a band that they're barely using for LTE.

Eh.... you got that backwards. Nexus 6 is the one that didn't ship with a working notification light. Some hacks have partially enabled it, but to my knowledge, nobody ever got the blinking hardware working for it (since the blink function is simply not implemented in the firmware). The pixel's *ALL* have a working notification light, you just have to turn them on, which (unlike N6) you can do from the settings menu.

Yes the N6 LED wasn't enabled in stock firmware, but it is there and works with the LineageOS ROM I have installed.
Thank you for helping with the setting on the Pixel XL. I am amazed that it wasn't set to on when new out of the box. A person would never know it was there.
I think I prefer the steady light over the blink as I know I will see it when I glance at the phone. Yes I know it would use more power.
Both my cars, one 10+ years old and the other 20+ years old don't have bluetooth inputs but do have 3.5mm inputs, so the audio out on the smartphone is useful for music while driving. I use that more often than using headphones. It is more expensive to replace the car stereo or the whole car than finding a smartphone with a 3.5mm socket. Also I sometimes plug in one of the sets of computer speakers I have lying around. I don't need to go out and spend more money on the silly bluetooth speakers which are mostly not even in stereo.
