Best Tether App (w/Root) - G4 General

Any suggestions on the best Tether app now that Root has been acheived? Is FoxFi still our best bet even though we have Root now? Thanks!

Root won't automatically give you tether. Most ROMs that come out have this enabled.

Confirmed, FoxFi is still working. I will be testing WiFi Tether Router this weekend.
Now that we have root, I'm going to attempt the same methods I used with the L90 via build prop editing and a database change. Hopefully it'll prevent the data from being logged.

This would be helpful.

A modified HotspotProvisioning would be the best and most light weight solution, I know the VS986 has this accomplished (in the General subforum), but I'm not sure about other models.

My H815 (TWN) has a "Hot Spot" feature that works out of the box. Is that because the phone is carrier unlocked? Or does everyone have that? It's in my status bar 'power controls' section. However, I have WiFi Tether Router installed as a backup, haven't tested it (came over from my G3).

There is a thread already about how to enable Native Android wifi tethering. It is a simple ADB command and a reboot. You don't even need ROOT. I've done it already on my Verizon model and I am not rooted yet.
It is posted in the G4 Apps forums I think. Although a google search would pull it up.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g4/help/how-to-disable-carrier-check-native-t3153900
It is posted in the Verizon G4 forums but seems it would work on all carriers. It enables the Native Tether option in the Settings menu and disables some sort of check.

Yeah, I knew that Root wouldn't automatically enable it, that's why I asked for the best app to go along with it.

No idea. But when I went to his provided link, the Edit mentioned it was only available for non unlimited plans.

Must be nice.
The G2 also had built in Wireless Storage (a samba server) for accessing your G2 storage via local IP that had an option in the notification tray as a toggle. I don't think anyone has ever figured out how to move it to other devices outside of flashing the roms of phones that had it enabled.
HotSpot and a Wireless Storage port would be awesome.

And yes, this is nice. I had my internet go down in my building but wasn't worried...tethered my laptop to my phone and was able to use 8GB of the 20GB I have with Cricket for Netflix lol.

Carriers offer free tethering with limited plans. If you are on a unlimited plan, it cost extra. It cost $30 a month to add it to my plan.

I did what he said in this video and got tethering working in a few minutes.

It seems very simple and root isn't even needed.
There is a code that ends with #*# that doesn't work with sprint so this video is what I needed.

I have had several LG phones and this always works. It is very easy to setup once you have root. There is a post in this forum that walks you though the process. I believe it's 5 steps. I'm just to lazy to look it up.

Free wifi without root

Hey guys is this possible without having your droid x rooted?
I am running 2.2 now and I am not rooted.
What are the options? Thanks
What do you mean "free wifi"? You mean wireless tether?

Try PDAnet (in the market)? I know it allows free tether but you cannot get to HTTPS sites...so you wouldn't be able to check your banking or e-mail...but it may give you a limited solution.
Why not just root though and get this without the hassle?
Yeah I'd just root and get wireless tether app. No harm in rooting and it's simple. Never tried what he suggested above but no harm in trying right? good luck
3G Mobile Hotspot - the app that comes with 2.2 build by default, seems to work fine and free. Tested it successfully. I should mention that I'm rooted, but it never asked for superuser, so should work un-rooted as well.

Yep, that's my understanding. I'm not sure if it was the same app on 2.1, but it would ask me to subscribe to Verizon paid service when I'd try launching it before. So I just deleted it.
This version works just fine right out of the box, I don't pay for their tethering service.
I think I'd be more positive about this once you get your bill.

The 3G Mobile Hotspot isnt free, when you connect, and load a page it ask you to call customer service for the service...
Weird, sorry for misinformation then. I didn't get any prompts at all. It just started working. I'll have to check my bill then.
I just tried it another day again out of curiosity and thought I'd clarify after my previous confusion. It might help someone...
What happened was that I connected just fine using Verizon default app (hence my previous comments), but when I tried going online in the browser, it brought up a webpage offering to sign up for their tethering service.

Verizon S5 Questions & Tether

Current Verizon S3 user here. I have questions that I know are probably premature but I welcome any thoughts and answers.
Thanks in advance for your replies!
I still have the grandfathered unlimited data plan.
I have rooted and custom rom'ed my last few phones so I could have wireless tether for very occasional use (I am rural with a lot of ISP outages).
I am wondering what people think my outlook would be with a Verizon S5.
Will we be able to get root?
Will there be ports of the wifi tether type aps?
Will we be able to get bootloader access?
Would FoxFi work with it (I know they have a warning in their app about potential loss of functionality)?
While I have themed the crap out of my phones I have stayed with Touchwiz on the S3 for the most part, and the S5 touchwiz doesn't look like the worth thing in the world.
The phone has the 2 major features I look for, removable battery and external SD card.

Get Root Access? - Very Likely so yes
Get Bootloader Access - Very UNLIKELY given Verizon's position on "security" and "network integrity" which is just utter BS.
FoxFi and other apps for WiFi Tethering are always out there.
Bootloader exploit, highly unlikely. Though I'm sure it will get the same root/safestrap treament that the S4 and Note 3 both got. At least I seriously hope so anyways If it doesn't I'll be getting the New One instead.
I'm sure things will be easier this time around. I highly doubt we won't achieve bootloader unlock! IMO!

I'm in the exact same boat. Does WiFi Tether require an unlocked bootloader or just root access? Does anyone know whether WiFi tether will work on this device once rooted?

I am glad there is no 32gb model yet, since that along with Foxfi not working is why I am sticking with the S4. Not tempted at all without a 32gb model. My S4 32gb only has 6gb free.
FoxFi
The BT server for Foxfi works on my GS5v tethered to my Galaxy Note 8. I'll have to see how it performs on my laptop so I can work from my car... If it works good, I'll purchase the full version of PDANet+ / FoxFi.
I prefer to use the Wi-Fi tether (treve mod).
Hopefully a root will become available... I'd like to get rid of the bloat and crap.
Hard to say. On the S4, we still have a locked bootloader. Root is likely attainable. Stay tuned.

I can confirm that Foxfi works on the Galaxy s5. The free version only gives you 15 minutes of wifi thether so it is better to buy the full version. That what I did. I really don't care me about root, just want my wifi tether.

VZW: rooted and want to tether

I have rooted my vzw s5 and now I would like to find a tether option that takes advantage of being rooted.
I do not want to take this thread into whether I should or not, that is not my objective here.
I would like to find a hack, a work around to tethering.
I know about foxfi but do not want to pay for that either as it might not work if vzw changes something.

To be fair, in the other threads, I see a lot of 'WiFi tether' and I, and perhaps the OP want to know about bypassing the entitlement checks for Tether alone and not have to use FoxFi or Xposed as I cannot tether successfully with Xposed X Tether to my gaming PC.. I can use the Xposed method for WiFi just fine, but when I tether to my computer with it, it does nothing... at all.. Easy work around could be to buy a $20 USB WiFi adapter, but I don't want to do that either...

VZW tethering and Android Pay

So I just purchased the 6P and I have a few weeks to wait for it's arrival.
Was curious if there is a way to alter the build.prop so that I can use my 6P as a WiFi hotspot without keeping the phone rooted. Verizon doesn't allow me to use my phone as a "hotspot" with my Unlimited Data Plan, so I've always had to use an xposed module or something to deactivate the subscription check. My hope is that I can deactivate this check then unroot my phone.
I don't want to be fully rooted on a daily basis because I am hoping to use Android Pay.
Hotspot works out of the box without any build.prop edits.

There was another thread were Verizon users on unlimited data confirmed. I'll have mine Thursday so I'll check as well.
personally i've seen mixed reports. i'm beginning to wonder if there were a "later" batch of SIMs issued that forced some VZW bloatware to be installed. i'm not sure if these rumors were true or not, as this will be my first non-vzw device.
as for the OP - if you end up needing to edit the build.prop, you can unroot after making the changes.
I have had mine since Friday and I can confirm that you can use the built in hotspot function with my unlimited data package with no pop up at all. It just works. I don't know why but I am not complaining like said above.
Great news, thanks guys!!
Now if we could just get November 18-20 here faster...
I'll have to avoid XDA all together as the draw of custom ROMs could cause me to abandon Android Pay, but tethering and no root is great! Only other thing I use root for on my MotoX is Greenify which should be nullified by Doze.
PSA: First thing you do with your phone, unlock your bootloader! Regardless of rooting or not, you want the flexibility to not have to wipe your phone if you choose to root.
I spent the better part of yesterday reinstalling everything because I chose to finally root. Android Pay works with root, you just have to disable Superuser to add payment methods.
Tethering also works with Verizon out of the box. I have unlimited data and not paying for hotspot.
Got mine today. UDP on VZW. Tethering works right out of the box. It's GLORIOUS. Used to Android pay to pick up six pack at the liquor store tonight. This may be the first phone I DON'T root LOL. I've rooted EVERY phone I've had. Who knew it would take a Nexus NOT to root HAHAHAHA
Seriously Tethering is the first reason for rooting. There are many others....but Tethering was my main reason. With it working out of the box....I'm going to let the Devs. work their magic before I go near messing with it. I left my wallet at home, but saw the wireless pay at the register....cha ching!

not only that but some adblocks work without root as well. i've become used to nine as my exchange email client, so replacing the exchange.apk isn't even necessary any longer.
i might start looking in to theming again, however, since M natively supports it.

Is their a custom Rom with Native Hotspot Available? or a rooted Guide to a achieving native hotspot for the Moto Z force?
If you're on verizon, no... In fact, to the best of my knowledge, even if you're not on Verizon a custom ROM with room hasn't been released yet.
I tried a NUMBER of different apps to create a hot spot with zero luck. Tethered via BT was the best option without root.

Does that only tether over Bluetooth or you toggle it on just to activate the tethering?

This creates a wifi hotspot. No bluetooth needed.

Is 7.0 better in other aspects over 6.0 to warrant the update? I like the phone now but the low sound is driving me crazy with calls which for some this update fixes.

I can't really say. Phone had 7.0 when I got it. All android versions run together for me, tbh. They always say the new one fixes all the issues with the old one, but I can never really tell a difference. Been around since 1.6/Donut.
O alright. Well thanks for your help. Guess I'll give it a shot and hope for the best
Alright so there was one update in between the version I had and a second 7.0 that wouldn't let me do it. I'm on the one before the volume fix that I'm assuming just came out and it works. I'm not gonna do the next one as I need the hotspot feature so if someone wants to confirm on the latest then they can update the thread.
