[Q] As a first timer on samsung what do i need to do ? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i just bought this international exynos note 3 (N900) and i have some questions about it ;
1. I want to install all the roms kernels and mods i could find but in order to do that (I'm %100 stock btw) ,do i need to first unlock the device ( i dont know how i couldnt find it), then root it with CF- Auto root( my warranty is over so i dont need to think about KNOX i think??) Then use the dd method to flash a recovery and flash whatever i want. Am i right about the things i said on all above ? Is there an easier way to do it ?
2. Do KNOX ever prevents me from flashing things in ODIN if something gets triggered ?
3. If i am not right about the first question starting from %100 stock what do i need to do to get this baby rockin ? I'm thinking about flashing a stock lollipop rom with a custom kernel and root ofc. Any suggestions ?
4. Do we need to flash modems from odin ? Because when reading the AryaMods thread i saw something about updating the modem. I'm on 4.4.2 right now. Can we flash modems or even kernels from recovery ?
Thanks already!!

There is no much of roms to choose for this one. 9005 is most supported here.
Root using cf auto root.
Make back up of ta partion/imei.
Flash recovery with odin. Then flash roms in twrp (watch the ere about how to use twrp or YT).
flash stock roms using odin.

Can't i just flash recovery from odin then flash a custom rom after that without rooting ? Thanks!

If you are going to flash roms based on lollipop, update your phone to latest stock rom for your model using odin so you get latest bootloader.
Dude, you need root access to access system and write to it. Don't custom roms require root, if you take a look? (don't answer to this [emoji61] )
If you want that way, flash twrp with ? odin. Then flash supersu for your model using twrp. That way too you get root. Then flash roms after (read rom instructions).
Ask if all wondering. ?

No my question was; not rooting the device in the first place before flashing the recovery and the rom. The roms already comes with the root in it. So just to be clear first upgrade the base to lollipop from odin then flash a recovery and lastly flash a lollipop rom. Would this be your sequence when you just bought a new note 3 ?

Flash latest firmware then custom recovery then flash the custom rom of your choice. No need to root after flash official firmware but it's good to root first as you may want to backup efs before you start messing the phone. I backed up the efs for the past 1.5years but so far never need it.

You cannot downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3 and if you have a 4.3
nandroid backup you cannot restore it either.
You will only be able to upgrade or flash 4.4.2 roms and newer
versions of android roms/firmwares.
Oh, one more thing there is no such thing as "denox" LOL
Good luck!

Yeah you can flash Stock via ODIN or you can install CWM/TWRP and use a custom recovery. -- Make sure REACTIVATION LOCK is OFF before you do anything or it won't work.

[Q] Questions on installing CWM

Hi all, im a noobie with samsung devices and this whole Odin thing so decided to ask here before messing up things.
So, i want to install a custom rom. I rooted my device with towelroot just a while ago, so now i only need a CWM recovery. Can i just download the latest CWM .tar file for note 3 and flash it through Odin? Will the fact that i rooted using towelroot have any impact on this? Also, will towelroot stick when flashing the CWM recovery, or flashing a new rom?
Can Rom Manager be used to install CWM, as i understand that it is a supported device. Is it a worse way than going through Odin?
My plan is to make a backup with CWM and then probably flash X-Note rom if all goes how i planned it.
Sorry if these questions are answered somewhere, couldn't find with browsing and searching for a good while.
Im on N9005 and 4.4.2
Thanks for all help!

Use this to install CWM through Odin it is better.
When u flash the new ROM and after wiping, the root using towelroot will be gone but probably the rom u'll be flashing will already be rooted or u can root easily with CF auto root.
I recommend TWRP over CWM, especially for a new flasher
Cheers!

[Q] I just want to be sure

Hey Guys,
I'm quite new on the forums, so forgive me if I ask questions that have already been answered a lot. Yes, I've read loads about 'how to root the Samsung Galaxy S4', but I just want your guys confirmation about my ideas.
1. I know for a long time now that you can use the CF-auto root to root your S4. But I'm wondering if it still works after such an amount of updates. Currently my phone's build number is I9505XXUGNG8
2. After my phone is rooted, I would like to have CWM as my costum recovery. I know that a really easy way is to install the ROM manager app from the playstore and from there, flash the CWM recovery. Again I was wondering if it still works that easily for the S4
3. After my phone is rooted and has CWM, I think I don't receive any OTA updates anymore right? (even when I just stay on the official TouchWizz rom)
If I don't get these updates anymore then what is a good way to get the newest Android TouchWizz versions? Can I just use the official TouchWizz roms from Sammobile that will come out in the future?
Already thanks to everybody who comments on this thread!
I hope that I can teach other people also something new.
Anyone?

1. Yes
2. I'm not sure. I always flash first non stock recovery with Odin.
3. Yes, You don't get official updates anymore. If You use latest rom from Sammobile You will loose root. Instead You can use prerooted stock roms easy to find on S4 forum. Or alternatively use any of custom TW based roms. Imo Omega rom is closest to stock.

If all you want to do it install a custom recovery and root the stock rom, you might consider just flashing Clockwork Mod Recovery in ODIN. Then using ClockworkMod to root the phone directly from recovery. It's 1 less ODIN step and it gets you to the same place.

Thanks for your reply! That is exactly what I want to do.
Just to be sure, should I do it this way?
1. Download CWM_6.0.4.7_Non-Touch_GT-I9505.tar
2. Flash the CWM_6.0.4.7_Non-Touch_GT-I9505.tar file with Odin v3.07
3. Download UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip
4. Boot into CWM recovery and flash the UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip from the external SD-card (Because I would place it on the external SD-card)
Then I should be rooted right?

Yes.
And you can replace the version of CWM you mentioned with any other recovery that makes you happy, as long as it's a .tar install file for ODIN.
Why the non touch version?

Thanks A LOT!!!
I prefer the non touch version, because I'm then just a little bit more confident that I don't misclick because of touch (although that probably won't happen) and I think that the volume keys are therfore just a little bit more accurate to navigate with,
Also, if I have CWM installed and rooted my phone, can I then just install ROM manager to keep my CWM recovery up to date or do I have to flash a new one to get an updated version?

[Q] (Noob?) question - stock 4.3 to custom 4.4 rom

I've been trying to figure this out for the last day, with no success.
I've got a rooted Note 3 N9005 (MJ7) stock. this is a 4.3 Rom. Knox status is0x0 (didn't trip it when I've rooted it ages ago).
I had enough of sammy rom, and I want to play with some of the new 4.4.4 custom roms.
I'm totally and utterly lost regarding what's tripping knox, and what are the needed steps in order to achieve that.
From what I understand, flashing TWRP (or any other custom recovery) will trip knox. I'm fine with that.
I'm not sure if I'm supposed to first upgrade my 4.3 to an official 4.4.2, and what / if is all the lock/unlock bootloader which seems to differ between versions (4.3 and 4.4). There also seem to be different versions of TWRP depending on if you're on 4.3 or 4.4?
Can I simply flash TWRP on my rooted 4.3, backup, flash new shinny 4.4.4 rom, and be happy ? Will that keep the root ?
Otherwise, do i need to upgrade to official 4.4.2 version first? will that lose root and I'll have to reroot the new version, and then flash TWRP and then flash 4.4.4 roms?
Any kind of help (or point me to an article that discusses it, even though I didn't find any, and i've searched) will be highly appreciated.
Cheers and thanks in advance.

If you aren't concerned about KNOX, upgrade to a 4.4 ROM (Official) via ODIN which will upgrade the bootloader, then once that's all done, flash TWRP for 4.4 then download your ROMs and flash via TWRP as normal.

Not concerned any more ...
Out of curiosity, what exactly kills the root? flashing a rom doesn't. upgrading via odin ? I'm assuming it has nothing to do with the system/cache, since each flash usually wipes them, so, where does it live?

Reflashing the ROM back to stock is what kills root. It's easy to re-root again once you've tripped KNOX anyways.
But tbh, once you install a custom recovery after you've upgraded your boot loader, you won't need to root. It isn't required for custom recovery
Sent from my Spectrum ZX +2
EDIT: Have you used ODIN to flash stock images before? If not, have a read around, it's pretty straight forward though.

I see ... so -> flash stock (kills root) -> flash TWRP (trips knox) -> flash custom rom without worrying about root ? (wouldn't i need it for titanium backup ,or do custom roms come with SU preinstalled?)
Yep, used odin. file on comp, download mode, couple of ticks, clicky clicky, happiness ensues ...
Yeah you're pretty much spot on. Yeah most ROMs are pre-rooted and if they aren't you can just flash superSU via your recovery. But you should be good to go and know what you're doing by the sounds of it.
Enjoy flashing them ROMs and make an efs backup and store off the device too. There's an adb script for it here (forget where but its here, development thread I think) don't use any apps from the play store as they are notorious for bricking Samsung devices.

lol ...notorious for bricking samsung devices ... i like it ...
i ran one already (zipped a 6MB and a 14.5MB image and tar into a 300kb zip), and been told you can do that from inside TWRP as well ...
I'll take a deep breath, and start downloading the official image and roms ...
I'll update if i'll get to the other side
out of curiosity ... does it matter which official 4.4.2 image i'm flashing ? (i'm getting the NZ one ...but i assume they should all be similar, and / or that it doesn't matter since i'll be flashing something else on it anyways, right ?

[Q] How to root N9005 Lollipop (5.0) N905XXUGBOK6 on Mac OS X?

Hi there,
I was wondering if I could get any help regarding my Note 3. I would like to root the device using a Mac.
AP: N905XXUGBOK6
CP: N9005XXUGBOJ1
CSC: N9005DBTGBOI1
Are there any guides out there using Heimdall? I wasnt able to find any.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Maybe flash cfautoroot with Heimdall?
Hey there,
thanks for getting back to me
I checked autoroot*chainfire*eu but the Build Number is a different one (LRX21V.N9005XXUGBOA5). Im not sure if this will work?
I know Samsung has different versions of the same ROM (e.g. 4.4.2, 5.01, etc.) and I never worried about that. I would just flash Chainfire's KK if I was running any KK stock ROM or LP file if I was running any stock LP ROM.
If you want to flash it a different way, you could flash TWRP using Odin and then flash supersu from TWRP.
So there are multiple ways to root a device?
Regarding the Chainfires ROMs: "If you have locked bootloaders, flashing one of these will probably brick your device". How do I avoid this? Can I somehow check if my bootloader is unlocked?
Regarding TWRP:
Would those be the two things I need for this method?

1- You have the international variant of note 3 (SM-N9005) and a german region code (CSC=DBT), so yes your bootloader is unlocked.
2- Yes, use "twrp-2.8.7.0-hlte-4.4.img.tar" and you should be good.

No
Will the KNOX Counter get trigger regardless of how I flash a a custom rom?
Knox will always be tripped when rooting or flashing any non-official Samsung firmware for the phone.
Knox is not a big deal in my opinion unless there is warranty left on the phone.
So 2017 passed and I didn't root my phone. /o\ However, I just deleted a few pictures by accident which I would like to recover. I read that this might be possible with a rooted phone and PhotoRec. Whats the current method to root the Note 3 on a Mac?
N9005 ver5.0 N9005DXUGBO3
N9005 ver5.0 N9005DXUGBO3
Can I know which method is the best to root this phone? Mainly which custom ROM should I use as the battery life is an issue plus I only use this phone for solely gaming purpose only(didn't even inserted a simcard in)!
Post 2 Post 4.
Battery Life stick with stock rom .
