Anyone using Google Cardboard with their Turbo? - Google Cardboard

I read reports that the Turbo doesn't work well with some of the standard Google Cardboard headsets because of how its magnetometer is setup. Has anyone had success with any particular Google Cardboard or other VR headsets?

Due to a sale I saw, I actually just bought a Cardboard for $5 FS from ebay... I figure why not give it a shot.
That being said, I did come across the issue you mention... and I found a potential "answer" here for it (last post): https://forums.motorola.com/posts/61a66aeaa5

I had this problem with Maxx. I used Set Orientation (an APP from play store, no root needed) to change the orientation of Cardboard and moved the magnet a little lower from its original position (outside of the place where its supposed to be). Worked well for me.

Yes I tried it was a coworkers box.... It sucked... IMO. And it worked better with her 2yr old phone..

I use Archos VR, very nice and cheap.
http://www.archos.com/us/products/objects/cself/avr/index.html

I use a Powis ViewR.
It is an awesome headset that uses the new conductive touch button instead of the magnet switch. It has a stylish leather and black look that is much more attractive than the typical cardboard headsets. It is still cardboard, but one side of it has a leather look coating and the other is matte black.
One of the best features is that the lenses are adjustable, so if you wear glasses you can adjust the lenses to your needs by screwing them in and out to focus and just leave your glasses off. It also has soft tubing around the face part so it is comfortable to wear. It comes pre-assembled and ready to go.

The only issue I have had with it is that initially I was using it with my phone while it was still inside an Encased case. The extra thickness of the case caused the glue on the bottom of the rear flap to separate. I replaced the glue with sticky-back velcro so it can accommodate thicker phones. You might want to do that too if you want to use your phone while it is still in a case.

I used my Turbo with the free Conan 360 cardboard. It works, but I don't think there's any magnet or trigger on the Conan 360, so nothing to not work with the Turbo. I also have a cardboard from OnePlus coming in the mail. We'll see how that works.

This seems to be what the Conan 360 viewer is: http://www.dodocase.com/products/virtual-reality-cardboard-pop-up-viewer
No mechanical input...

1. Cardboard 2.0 has a capacitive button that touches the screen so no problem with the Turbos' odd placement of the magnet.
2. You can modify Cardboard 1.0 boxes and just move the magnet switch. It's not that difficult. I did it and I'm really not that handy. Just do some experimentation first about where exactly the magnet sensor is on the Turbo. It's kinda near the middle of the back of the device. A bit to the lower side of it.

There is a hole cut into the Conan one. I just stick my finger in it and tap the screen. Seeing as it was made for iPhone 5, I bet that's what they intended that hole for, lol.

Thanks for the tip, @coronado!

Just got my "Valencia" cardboard (the one I mentioned above for $5). The side-mounted magnet doesn't work, but if I hold it on the front right area, I can slide it up and down to get it to work. I'll have to try the other people's suggestions, but so far this works for me. There's no slot there for it, but I'll figure something out. Maybe I can hack the 2.0 capacitive trick into this one...
Bottom line, it works, phone fits fine, etc. FYI, this is the one I got: http://www.ebay.com/itm/361181827682?afsrc=1&rmvSB=true

My droid turbo works with google cardboard just use reverse angle ... Mean put mobile on cardboard opposite side (touch buttons will be on left side and power button on down side) magnet will work then

Just cracked my screen. Really want to try it out.

My brothers one for iPhone 3gs works nicely, not sure of branding or anything. But they're pretty standard.
Micro USB on a 30-pin 3GS dock? Or is it just a 'stand' without connection?

I ve found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Car-Holder-...384063?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f0a28c67f the seller says its for x5
One of the many reasons I wish manufacturers would've standardised on a MiniUSB connector instead of a MicroUSB connector, is the fact that the MiniUSB slots in effortlessly so is ideal for a docking station - the MicroUSB on the other hand is a pain in the backside to both slide in and slide out. Strangely, there's very little difference in the external size of the connector itself, so there's really no (as far as I can see) advantage in using MicroUSB.
That being said... Unless Huawei release their own U8800-specific dock or the 'phone itself becomes enormously popular, I doubt there'll ever be a proper dock available for it. By "proper" I mean one that you can just throw the 'phone at, and it'll (by virtue of the form-specific design) slot straight into its connector - this is the situation I have with the after-market dock I got for my HTC TouchPro.
It looks like that for the U8800, we'll have to make do with a "universal" dock. The one sebgus mentioned is about as good as it gets, but at around AUD$60 plus postage, it's a painful proposition for something which isn't even purpose-built.
By the looks of it, the Google Nexus One dock might fit the bill, but frankly I couldn't be bothered tracking down the dimensions (hey, it's nearly 2:30am here!). However... Even if the dimensions (width and thickness) of the 'phone were the same, there'd still be the U8800's ultra-curved end to consider - it may well slot into the dock perfectly but then want to overbalance to one side or the other. This however might be cured with some styrene wedged/glued into the corners to keep the 'phone upright?
The only other option would be to go the genuinely universal route, but then you're just getting a 'phone holder - and that's not what a dock's all about.
I'll do some more investigation into this thought tomorrow after I've had a few hours' sleep.
Edit: Bugger the sleep! Just looked up the dimensions, and it seems it might work...
U8800: 62mm (W) x 11.6mm (D)
Nexus One: 59.8mm (W) x 11.5mm (D)
Depending on the depth of the resting recess, the U8800's extra width may actually counteract its curved bottom edge.
Does anyone here have access to a shop which sells Nexus One docks, in which they can try to fit their U8800? They're cheap enough from eBay (around AUD$14), but it'd be far more prudent to try it out before parting with your cash.
The Nexus One docks wont fit, because the microUSB plug points in "wrong direction".

If you need a quick dock solution without charging you can use the case from an old mini DV tape case.
Just open up the case, the X5 fits pretty well. If you're brave enough you might even try gluing a charging cable on the bottom, I tried but the super glue didn't really hold well.

Vipertek Leather Case

Didn't see any threads in the Iconia area so figured I'd post. Been using it for a couple days now and like it a lot. Has 6 clips that hold the iconia in the case real good. Bottom 2 clips detach to allow the bottom to pop out and sit in one of the 3 stand grooves in the cover. The cover has a clip on it too that holds on real good. Case is made of black, leather-like material and the inside is a gray felt material. Also, all ports are accessible. Due to use of clips instead of a full enclosing style "sleeve," it allows full access to the edges of the screen, unlike the Acer case which came with my tab and I don't like. For $20 with free shipping which took a week, I give it 9/10, only because it's advertised as leather and it's a leather blend material which doesn't bug me.
I cannot post links yet so go to Amazon and search for Vipertek Iconia a500 for some pics.
edit: forgot to add cutouts on the back for the speakers and the camera.

The link posted by azoller1 in reply to my original post is the correct link to Amaz. Ordered it on 11/12/11 and it arrived by USPS on 11/16/11. It looks, it feels and it smells like leather on the outside whilst the inner lining is micro-fill. It has 6 "clips", (looking at it in landscape view) 2 are at the top L & R corners, 2 are at the bottom L & R corners and the final 2 are on the L & R sides about one third of the way down from the top. When it is closed up the A500 engages in all 6 clips. When it is fully closed every "input" (power, hdmi, usb full, usb "B", on/off button, volume up/down, rotation lock and even the sd card cover) are all accessible. To operate the A500 you have to "unhook" the bottom 2 clips and slide the bottom edge of the A500 into one of the "ridges" where it rests at the required angle. Although I am not an acomplished photographer I hope the attached photos will show that.
Having used it for a couple of days I am growing to like it especially at the price I paid.......THERE LIES THE RUB!......... When I bought it on 11/12/11 it was quoted on Amaz's site as $9.93 plus $4.99 shipping and even without seeing it I thought I couldn't go wrong at that price. On Tuesday 11/15/11 I went to Amaz's to check on delivery date and ........SHOCK HORROR........ found that the price was now shown as $19.98 plus shipping. Long story short I checked my bank account and found that the original price quoted me of $9.93 plus shipping was what had been charged to my debit card. There was no notice on the web site when I bought it that it was a special offer or some such so I can only conclude that for a short time a mistake had been made by the selling company.
At the price I paid I would heartily recommend this case BUT I am not certain I would at twice the price. But if you like the look of it, look around and see if you can find a reduced price.

I have it as well. I have had mine 7 days. I frikkin love this thing. Nice, thin, unobtrusive and best of all has a look of great quality. Get one guys they are the shiz.
just ordered it yesterday.. there are also others that are the same just rebranded for different prices.
the thing that really differentiates this from other cases is that it doesnt cover the bezel all around

err.. the one i actually ordered was the vertek branded one..
This is also the one I have my tablet in.there are two flaws.
1, I do not like the forword type stand does not lay in my Lap as easly as the fold back type.
2.it needs to have some color good tech stuffs always targeted for men.grrrrr.
I did order the red crown case I just hope the quality is even half this viper case.
grabbed the Blurex one on amazon. it was 17.00 usd couldn't complain judging by the pics in your post here, it's identical probably the same manufacturer just a different sales brand stamped into the leather. and i concur the quality of these cases are great.

I've been using the junky old stock Acer rubber case for a while now. Looks like a much better bang for the buck from what I can see. Thanks for the heads up!
just a heads up.. these cases(doesnt matter what brand) all say black but the inside flap is actually a grey color(obvious because of pics), verteks has one with the inside being all black, which i prefer. so if you prefer black/black, get the verteks branded one.

Sketchbook ink

This is a new arrival on the play store and I thought I would chime in with my thoughts on it. First of performance world's pretty smooth, more smooth them I thought it would for a vector type app. It does lah a bit when zoning in our out, not so much on the zoom it self but the redraw. Second the interface, it's very close to Sketchbook pro but needs some work there is no save option witch could be confusing but it does save your work when you either go to the galley or create a new piece of work. When it comes to saving your world there is no other option other then png, and is not transparent, you cannot merge layers. It can save images up to 100+ mega pixels. There is no pen pressure sensitivity, which really blows but I have heard rumors autodesk has plans to release one for the Samsung app store. Over all I think it a pretty decent app, it need some polishing. If there is any questions you would like to ask please feel to ask

The autodesk website mentions a version being released via the samsung app store which supports pressure...but it isn't listed in the US store yet :-/

Wow, sorry - but this really isn't a very good app yet.
First off - no pressure sensitivity. Given that they have it in their Sketchbook Pro app, it seems weird not to include it here.
Second, while the UI is similar to the one in Sketchbook Pro, it's definitely not as polished or refined. For example, no easy way to erase lines. Of course, since pen support isn't there - you can't use the eraser end of a pen (Wacom pen-enabled pens work with the Note 10.1 and give you eraser end - which actually works on most Note pen apps).
I would STRONGLY recommend Sketchbook Pro over this. It's not much more money - but it's a lot more feature and capability.
Just to let you know It is pressure sensitive see picture.
Also in don't mind that it doesn't have an eraser, have you ever been able to rub out ink on paper?
The only thing missing for me is a water will or opacity settings.
Oh and it is available in the Samsung app store atleast the aussie one.
Wait, so is it or is it not pressure sensitive?

As I said above it is pressure sensitive, oh just so I'm clear I got my foot from Samsung app store just incase it makes a difference I don't see why it should though
There is only one pen for sensitivity and it's the top one, all the others haven't got it
I'm going to try to use it with sketchbook pro, as if I first do something with pro but want to add more detail to it I'll then upload my work to ink and carry on with it as ink you can zoom in more

My apologies your right It is only the top brushing
Downloaded this as soon as it came out on Samsung's app store (is there really a difference with the one released on Google Play?). But i haven't tried it out yet since i have a few projects lined-up on Sketchbook Pro.
Quick question though. Is this app raster or vector-based? It doesn't really say.

Before Sketchbook removed the commentary on their website , it said that the version available in the Samsung Store was vector based, hence the detailed zooming (I supposed).

The one on Google Play is definitely NOT pressure sensitive.. I have a copy of it on my Note and I've actually *tried* it - so pictures or not, you're wrong.
It simulates pressure sensitive inking, but isn't actually pressure sensitive.
As for not needing an eraser - this isn't *really* paper - paper is that hard dry stuff made from pulped wood. Your tablet isn't actually made of paper. Why do you assume it should work just like 'real' paper?

Are you sure it's pressure sensitive? I'm trying the top pen right now and it's just giving me a static width line no matter how hard or lightly I press. Same as pen two. The other ones simulate pressure, but don't actually respond to pen pressure at all.

Yeah I notice it's not actually paper Thanks for pointing that out. :good:it is however an ink on paper simulation so for me personally I don't mind the app not having an eraser that is all.
As for pressure sensitivity I'm sorry but if you pay attention to the picture I posted earlier in this thread it shows that the top brush atleast is pressure sensitive not all brushes just the top one. I also did mention I bought it from Samsung apps not Google play so I can't answer for the Google play version.
This is a screenshot from the samsung apps version and has the pressure sensitive top brush which is seperate from the rest of the brushes.
I'm thinking if this one is different than the one from google play store then does that mean the sketchbook pro for note featured in samsung apps is also different from the google play one?
If so then it is wrong to charge again for something I already have bought
I've also noticed that on my 10.1 it's this is called galaxy note ink
Sent from my GT-N8010 using xda premium
There are 2 versions of Sketchbook Ink. The one in the Play Store is not pressure sensitive. It seems Autodesk released a Note specific version to the Samsung app store. The problem for US buyers is only free apps are available from the Samsung app store currently and Sketchbook Ink for Galaxy Note is a paid app. Autodesk is aware of the issue and working on some resolution.
I emailed them saying that people who bought the android versions should get free upgrades to the note versions, it really isn't right otherwise.

Just wondering did you hear back from autodesk?
Autodesk hasn't updated the support thread. I'm from the US and was able to download the app by setting the Samsung Apps country to Australia. It worked and I paid without issue.
In all honesty, sketchbook ink for note only has 1 pressure sensitive tool. The rest of the tools don't use pressure. So you really don't gain much with this version.

I think your cardboard will be ready before mine, if I got the lenses after 27
then we have to place that switch at correct location. ok just leave it, it's not that important you can touch the screen select example and then place phone in cardboard.
btw from where you ordered the lenses ?, I have ordered from local lab instruments supplier

Only trouble is, the magnet does nothing... Took the phone out and tried tapping the magnet here and there on the phone and it looks like the magnetic sensor is just by the volume control... Not ideal given how the box is designed! A very difficult place to cut away at to make the original design work.
Others have suggested using something capacitative (like copper tape wherever you get hold of that!) and taping one end to the screen so you can double tap which is apparently the same thing...
Good luck!
Do you have a shaky gyroscope like mine guys?? Is this normal? :crying:
You can see it here http: / / youtu.be/ mMzN6GIEtjs

Yup, It's same here
Finally I got lenses. (actually lenses with focal dist 50mm(+20 power) work perfectly)
After changing the position of magnet
It works perfectly,
only two problems
1. due to 720p display resolution you will notice pixels on screen.
2. The sharky Gyro of our phone crates problem sometimes
Otherwise it's really great experience

Posting image is not possible for me at least till next week, I'm away from home.
you can place a little magnet at the bottom right side of phone, that's the location where the sensor is
Hey everyone! Do you think the G would work with any of the readymade cardboards you can find on Amazon, like "Andoer" or "I am cardboard?" Any luck with the magnetic sensor and the shaky gyro?
Thanks in advance!

IMO the shaky gyro would be as it is until bosch or motorola releases a new sensor driver that fixes it. Is not that diffucult, just need to "smooth" the raw values. (some apps use this method internally)
The magnet halfway down the screen at the bottom of the volume control works for me. To find the exact spot, just move a fridge magnet over the screen until it blanks out. The hall effect sensor is in the phone so you can glue a magnet into your phone case to automatically close the screen and save your battery.
By taking a more powerful magnet and swinging it at the back of the phone, you can switch/'select' in Cardboard.
But I have modified a plastic version of cardboard from tinydeal which is about $13 (no magnets, but big 1.25" clear lenses) and taping a strong magnet on the inside top, and a ring magnet (both magnets come from old cheap $1 earphones, the strong one comes from large over the head, the ring magnets from others.) The weaker ring magnet is kept in place by being attracted to the strong magnet taped inside.
If you look at how the cardboard magnets work for the Google Nexus 5 that cardboard was designed for, you can figure out that you would have to put the strong magnet further from the phone.
One problem is that the bank of suction cups in the tinydeal gradually slip, so I also put a ledge for the Moto G2 to rest upon, and used 5 minute epoxy to attach it. I have attached a parts pic. The ledge is cut out from a $1 store dual dvd case.
Works a treat with the Paul McCartney concert in the stadium, use Bluetooth stereo headphones to look around the stadium and the sound moves as you turn your head.

Z3 compact + Google cardboard

Anybody successfully got this device working with Google cardboard? Love to try it, but the replica cardboards seem to fit bigger devices. I like to know if it will fit the z3 compact.

z3 compact is way to small. best for use with devices 5-5.5 inches
Couldn't resist trying. It works. Sadly the magnetic switch is on the wrong side. Needs some work. Virtual reality on the z3 compact! Awesome combination of the high quality camera, Google camera photo sphere and vr cardboard. You can jump in the picture and look around. Really fun and decent image quality.
Ordered a plastic headset with straps on Amazon because the cardboard won't last long.
It's not bad with this phone, but it's much better with a 5" phone and a 1080p screen. Maybe if you modified cardboard to be smaller, but with the stock plans you get black bars on the side (and the Sony logo) and the pixels are much more noticeable.
I'd give it a shot if it's the only device you have, but if you can use something like a Nexus 5 (I borrowed my friend's) it's much better.
It's not quite an Oculus Rift, but it's still really cool.
It's a pity that the magnetic sensor is near the "bottom" of the phone. I've tried placing the phone rotated 90 degrees to the right (instead of left), but sadly, the Google Cardboard app only supports landscape rotation in one direction, towards the left.

You can use your fingers, Bluetooth controller or move the magnet to the other side. Not ideal, but it works.
But if the z3c is your only phone is there a way to make the magnatic switch work (not just hold it on the other side but a permanent option) and do you really see the sony logo and black bars?
In short is my question can I use my z3c for cardboard and that it works 100% without any compromises?
And if I need to adjust something what do I need to do? Or buy?
I've used it, and it works great.
No, it's not a 5" phone but I've used a Z3 full fat with Cardboard too and the difference isn't much. I've also tried other devices and they have issues with the magnet too. Apparently the magnet provided just isn't strong enough. You can get around this by touching the screen (yes, that's awkward) to select menus with the Google demos, and in some cases, pairing your phone with a PS4 Dualshock 4 controller.
Don't let the fact that the Compact is smaller put you off trying it. It's a great way to try VR, with all the everyday benefits of still having a smaller phone in your pocket.
There are indeed ways to use Bluetooth controllers as an alternative for the magnet.

Which one did you buy? I've seen a lot of different variations of cardboard, some even for smaller phones like 4.5" - 5".
The plastic one, was a misbuy. Turned out to be 6"..
Did try a paper 4,5" cardboard on eBay wich fits fine.
I ordered a generic "cardboard" with no magnetic switch. It worked okay. I had to position the z3c half an inch further away from the lenses for the proper focus, and I had to hold it in place with my hand.
It only cost me $1.99, free shipping, so I just considered it a fun novelty.
Question. What kind of bluetooth controller would work for this?

I can confirm a DualShock 4 works if you own a PS4!

The DualShock 4 can be used to simulate screen touches in Google Cardboard apps? I'll give it a try.

It would be great if it could, but that's not quite what I meant. I meant that the DS4 pairs with the Z3C to be used with Google Cardboard. Several demos I've tried allowed me to move around in virtual space using the DS4 as a controller. I can't comment on actual screen touches with the trackpad, although that would be a very nice side effect if also true.
Just bought a cheap $2 Google Cardboard off eBay and am awaiting shipment, but I just wanted to point out that Dual Shock 3 controller can be paired with the Z3C as well and works great!
Just wanted to report that Cardboard works perfectly with the Z3C. I guess this is the first time I've run into an issue with the Z3C's low PPI as it's very noticeable when viewing through Cardboard, but that's a very specific use and I wouldn't use my daily phone as a VR handset anyway. Otherwise, everything else works as it should and was really cool!
I fixed the magnetic button issue by rotating the phone or taking the button out and putting it on the other side of Cardboard.
Works fine after a minor mod.

I have a pretty thick bumper-case for my Z3c (since I have a history of losing phones to stone-floors) and it works just fine. There is some noticeable pixelation but not to bad. As some other people have noted the magnet-button does not seem to work. I read this post a few days ago and I made a somewhat crude work-around using some aluminium foil. If it is of interest to some one else, here is my somewhat lengthy blogg-post about it: http ikmpltyh.blogspot.se/2015/07/google-cardbord-button-for-z3-compact.html
New users can't create hyper-links so you will have to cut-and paste...
i made a profile for my z3c u can download it here:
