Recent apps - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody managed to push a recent apps switcher to the shield and have it functional? Or is there one I just can't access built in? Like... Leanback is cool and all but it makes for a terrible recent apps switcher. Also, anybody have a tasker profile to launch an app on double tap off home our like on f2 press of keyboard or something. I'm amazed I can't find anything about this.

I was a little annoyed when I couldn't find it. It's there though. I'm using LMT Pie Controls and Nova Launcher mostly but OmniSwitcher is working too if installed as priv-app. To find the recent app switcher you need to go to Shortcuts>Activities>SystemUI>Overview.recent.RecentsActivity You can set a button on the LMT launcher to access it because its a little pointless to have to return to homescreen in order to launch it, but yea it works pretty much the same as regular

pie only. Havnt tried it with gestures and isas. I imagine it might make navigation a little more cumbersome than it already is. I forgot, that to get that shortcut to show in LMT I needed to set the button to "trigger a shortcut" and then chose "Activities" with the Nova Icon next to it then following the path i wrote earlier. I imagine that there are other apps that you can use to launch activities (AnyCut maybe) if you dont wanna install another launcher. Anyways the recents switcher is part of SystemUI so there is probably more ways to get to it and like I said OmniSwitcher working too. Screenshots...

More columns and rows for apps.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, or if it's been asked before [if it has I haven't found it!], but I was wondering if there was a way I could add either more columns or more rows to my applications screen? Is there an app that can do this for me?
Thanks in advance.

Try http://www.appbrain.com/app/launcherpro/com.fede.launcher
I installed it and the program doesn't actually come up in my Applications, am I doing something wrong? I got it from the Market.
Install home switcher too then. Run that program and then choose to run launcherpro. Its a different home. Meaning you will have to configure everything on your home screen from new on. But just try it . Your old home will be still there and with the home switcher you can choose wha tyou want to run. Oh and to configure it press in the home menu button and then preferences and play with it a little.
Launcherpro will not appear in the applications list. Use the Home button and hold it until you get a pop-up menu where you can select between sence and lanucherpro.

Thanks for the swift reply - before I actually read them I was fiddling about and figured out what I need to have done, thank you both. However I was looking for something with a more stock look per-se, with the option to actually being able to add more columns and rows into the Application Drawer, not the live Home screen.
Not sure if I'm making any sense? Sorry, I'm fairly new at all this!

What I'm trying to achieve is to have more icons down on the dock [in that applications view and the live home screen], and to add another column so there's not 4 but 5...

Hehe that I understood and you can do it with launcher pro 5 columns in app drawer and it can have even an 3D effect .
I mean the stock look , you mean the touchwiz look or vanilla look?
Which ever came with the phone - don't know the name sorry!
Is there any possibility to organize apps into folders in the menu and not only on the homescrees? Having 300+ apps can really be a pain in the ass when searching for a particular one, not to mention it would be great to have apps organized by type, e.g., games, system, social.
Dunno what adw launcher does , but there are apps on the market who can help you with organizing. I never did cuz it never made any sense to me. Too much work and I wont use it anyway. Boss was very proud of his organization of the apps and it took him always longer to find the app he needed in the folders....

[Q] Adw launcher & Honeycomb

Have installed adw ex on my Transformer, I love it, except the top row, with the adw icon, adw unlock etc.
Is it possible to remove it, and if so how?

Wtf? Why is there a persistent logo on a launcher?
Jeez ander....
Tried LLP and it works better, but I can't remove the dock on LP. And can't
use swipe up to open appdrawer.
Guess I'll have to write to ADW and ask for a option to remove it.
I have been writingsoftware for ages and that is why I stay away from UX. Cannot please everyone (including me LOL)

This kinda stopped me from using ADW too...it would be nice if 'lock desktop' could be replaced with 'Apps' or any option we like.
I did email the dev about this a while ago when the Transformer came out but the reply sounded like it won't be updated.
Is there another launcher that removes the top row, enable swipe up/down and without or capable to hide the dock?

Try GO Launcher, it has swipe up/down also.
Only thing is it's not in the Market but you can side load it plus it's jsut not as good as ADW EX but that's just my opinion.
On the plus side it has gestures and you can resize widgets like the default launcher
Somebody on the post your home screen page had removed the logo, I wish there was adw that integrated the stock features like holographic, and Google search

Only if we could have ADW + Stock top (with the My Apps and + button)
that would be PERFECT.
From what I've read on the adw thread in the theme forum, the developer is working on being able to get rid of that top adw button and quite possibly even getting rid of that whole upper section too.
I tried Launcher pro and even optimized it but it still didn't feel as smooth and responsive as adw. I honestly think adw is perfect except for that top icon section.

Missing ADW Settings
Hey all, I think I could live with the bar at the top (although I agree it's a little obnoxious), but I can't get to any of the standard ADW settings. They're just blank. I'm not sure how to take a screenshot or I'd attach it. Any thoughts? Do I need to root my transformer for it to work?

No root needed to use ADW EX launcher.
To take screen shot you can use the native function.
Go into Settings>Screen>Click on the Screenshot box.
Now when you press and hold the Recent Apps key it will take a screenshot.

[Q] LauncherPro Error?

Hey all, I've got a question. I'm running stock root on my NC with LauncherPro, and for whatever reason, I can't change the shortcuts on the dock. I want to change them to programs I actually have - by default, I don't have a messaging or phone app. Whenever I try to change the shortcut (by holding down on the icon and then going to change it), LauncherPro launches the previous app I had open. Has anyone else had this problem?
I am open to switching launchers - I just use LauncherPro on my phone so I know how to work it. I'm looking for a really fast, minimalistic-launcher. GoLauncher is too feature heavy, and it makes my NC lag. Zeam launcher also lags a lot. I want something very snappy and fluid, even if it is lacking in features.

Make sure your homepage isn't locked.... then long press one of the ones you want to get rid of and delete it... then the others
Then you can add the ones you want
What do you mean, locked? I've tried doing just that - long pressing and removing it, but it doesn't work.

When you push menu on the home page, there is an option to lock the homepage so you don't accidently mess it up. It is a toggle so just tap it to unlock.
Oh, is there? I can't for the life of me find it. Whenever I press home, lock isn't one of the options.

Not home, menu once you are on the home screen. It may not be on the first menu, you may have to push more or advanced or something, but it is there.
Yeah, that's what I'm doing. I looked under all of the settings - from advanced settings to Appearence, and there's no lock home screen option, or anything like it in Launcherpro.

Well, obviously it is locked so launcher pro must have that setting somewhere. Look in their documentation. For most the other launchers it is in menu on home screen, not in settings.
I installed ADW launcher and uninstalled launcher pro. The lock option is there, but it doesn't change a thing - even with it unlocked, it, still launching the previous app instead of letting me edit the shortcut.
You say you are on rooted stock. Which dock are you talking about? The stock dock or the one that comes with the launcher? Its been a long time since I used stock and cannot picture what you are trying to do.

I have two docks, so to speak - the default Nook one, pictured here (just without that arrow in the middle. NOT the book dock, the black bar at the bottom)

}
And then I have the launcher dock - right now, the ADW launcher dock. Whenever I go to change the short cut on the launcher dock, whether it's ADW or LauncherPro, it kicks me out of the settings window and throws me to the previous program I was using. I tried "unlocking" the dock in the ADW options like suggested, but it still happens.
Ok that thing you have pictured is not a dock, it is the status bar and should always be there even if you have another launcher loaded. The dock is a black bar above that. And on my system you change what is on the adw dock by dragging shortcuts off and on to it. But in order to do that the desktop must be unlocked. Your description of going to a settings window in adw to change shortcuts on the dock does not compute for me.

One-handed software keys? LMT launcher will give you that.

According to what your specific needs are, this app or SwypePad or GMD Gesture Control are must have apps.
I use GMD and it's solved one of the 3 Android's only big shortcomings: lack of "ALT+TAB" and switch to previous/next app.

This app has a feature for that too. But I like the way you can customize it completely with any command or app and also that it wraps around your finger. My thumb is not long enough to use SwipePad on this phone.
But with the pie in LMT, I can handle 20 different commands and shortcuts by holding it in one hand, using my thumb.
This is what it's all about:

Out of those 3 LMT is the one I too like most but it has a couple of issues which make me use GMD instead (at least at this time):
- it lacks the built-in capability to launch app-created shortcuts (you have to install and thinker with 2 other apps: Tasker and Autoshortcut)
To me that means, above all, that I can't make it go to a specific Nova Launcher Prime page like GMD can and, most importantly, it can't launch an RTF file created by Solid Explorer.
- it makes that shortcut-launched RTF file crash (shortcut on the home created by Solid Explorer and opened in Thinkfree Word) whenever I try to switch back to it with the "prev app"/"next app" controls and that's one of the apps I need most often to switch back to.
As it is LMT is unusable for me but I keep on checking its updates to see if/when these issues are resolved as if/once it does LMT is practically perfect..
I don't think they are comparable. You are not going to get the kind of one-finger control GMD that the PIE offers in LMT.
What I really miss with the Note 2 is to be able to reach the hardware buttons with my thumb while holding the phone in one hand without dropping it.
The pie is that and 16 other commands that you can access with your thumb alone.

Absolutely true but I am not interested in one hand use.
I have always found very annoying trying to operate ANY touchscreen mobile device with one hand (doesn't matter the screen size).
What I am interested in are gesture/quick ways to ALT+TAB between apps, switch to previous/next app, go to the Home screen, open the Recent Apps list, turn off the screen/lock the device AND launch/switch back to my most used apps.
Both of them do that and LMT does it much better EXCEPT the very last thing I listed above and detailed in my previous post which LMT does not at all. As soon as LMT can do that too I will happily switch to LMT!
I tried it in the early stages on my hd2.. but then went onto use zmooth.... now I use button savior on the note 2....but seems this app has progressed alot now. ..Thanks for reminding. .. got to try it now

Did you happen to 'uninstall' Fire Launcher? If so, what method did you use? If you 'uninstall' it, you can use just about any launcher you want. Hijacker works with some launchers, and some it does not. 50/50 chance. It does happen to work rather well with Google Now Launcher.

I actually used a method in a thread on the forum about disabling the fire launcher without root. I'm not using Launcher hijack for it at the moment. If I remove all the items from the "recent" screen, unfortunately it shows fire Launcher. Anything else though, pressing the home button immediately goes to Google Now, without any delay. How would one uninstall it without root? Can it be done just like uninstalling the Amazon apps?
EDIT: After some investigation it seems it WAS Launcher hijack doing it. I assumed it wasn't since I hadn't enabled the accessibility service.

See this post. Be warned though: the recent apps button (square button) has a fit when you uninstall Fire Launcher. You get kicked to lock screen when you swipe all your apps away. So you need to enable widgets. That will also allow shortcuts to be created.
To fix that recent apps button:
1) Download and install Activity Launcher
2) Open Activity Launcher, tap top left and select All Activities.
3) Scroll to System UI and tap it. Long press 'App Switcher' and create a shortcut. Place it as close to the recent apps (the square button) as possible. When you want to swipe close your apps, use that shortcut and you avoid the kick to lock screen. If you just uninstall Fire Launcher without downgrading it, you will break the home button and get parental warnings all over.

I wish I could go back in time. Before I knew that 5.3.2.1+ would cause these problems, the day I first got it, it was on an older OS. Not sure which one, but it doesn't matter, it could have been rooted. The next day when I woke up I saw it had updated, but I didn't think much of it. Until I learned that I had made such a big mistake.
