Yup. I am rooted before. I just unfreeze system apps and bloatware first, then remove xposed (no need to remove the xposed modules; they will not work if xposed is not installed), then unroot via SuperSU, and finally performed system update. After the update, I root my phone again, then install xposed again, then finally freeze system apps and bloatwares again.

delete Xposed and unroot
Then sideload OTA
working fine

i uninstalled root, busybox but i forgot to uninstall xposed and i stuck in bootloop.i think i have to reflesh pre root 2.19.40.18.
for my fortune i had twrp and i did a backup of whaat twrp calls "data" in microsd and then i copied in my pc.save files of games are in ?

NOTE NOTE:
I update ok 2.19.40.20
BUT then i flash twrp and flash super suV2.46 ..........hic hic bootllop
i dont understand

i dont understand... Everywhere people are saying to un-root first....As i remember last time we got a new one click root tool which allowed us to update via OTA without un-rooting... Will confirm if un-rooting is necessary or root can survive the OTA.

FW 2.19.40.20
Use TWRP flash super SU =>>> zenfone 2 bootlop
Use tools http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/zenfone-2-root-easy-t3114003
Root okie and work very good

Okay guys i updated to the latest fw NOW I CAN CONFIRM UN-ROOTING BEFORE APPLYING OTA IS NOT NECESSARY... here is what i did:
NOTE: ROOT SURVIVES OTA AND THERE ARE NO BOOTLOOPS ... BUT REMEMBER I USED THE LATEST 1 CLICK ROOT TOOL WHICH ALLOWS US TO APPLY OTA WITHOUT UN-ROOTING...IF U HAVE ROOTED YOUR PHONE VIA DIFFERENT METHOD U HAVE TO UN-ROOT FIRST......
1) Unfrozed all the frozen apps
2) Un-installed Xposed....
3) Un-installed BusyBox
4) Applied OTA
5) And Voila i was on the latest firmware...

Exactly what I did. But gave me an error while flashing.
After reboot there was a message and still on .18. :-/

I rooted with the latest root tool (3rd option). I did apply OTA withouth unfreezing apps and I had no problem with my phone. Everything is working and took no more than 2-3 minutes to complete.

Without UN-FREEZING you got no bootloops or anything rite? This is nice :good: finally this is what i was looking for... i hate un-freezing bloatware regularly as Asus has been providing regular updates it just adds to the steps for updating...

Hi
just xposed, but removed before ota.
bloatware was just frozen and unfrozen before.
But I think the whole thing is a bit f*cked up now. Tried to clear cache in recovery and now am in bootloop

No i didnt. I have to say that I didnt freeze everything Asus put on my phone but just what I dont use. I could give you a list but I'm pretty sure its not gonna make a difference. 3rd root tool works with OTA w/o unfreezing bloatware. At least for me.

:good: i am sorry but this is off-topic....did u or someone install Xposed framework latest build (official alpha3 version)... i am having issues with installation... can someone help me with xposed latest build (official alpha3)

Sorry guys,
I lied. :-/
Fastboot flashed the recovery after bootloop, rebooted into it. Cleared cache again (which now worked) and sideloaded the update an that complains by verify.
Turns out I did indeed turn on sw navbar in the build....prop.
Gonna revert the changes there and try again to update.
THX & MEA CULPA

what i've done :
i Left on my phone : busybox and frozen apps
just :
removed xposed
removed supersu
apply OTA
install Root
install xposed
also my bootloader still unlocked
Done.

So is it a little bit lottery to flash ota, any one tried to download ota file to phone and flash it from recovery automatically?

[ROOT] 23.0.1.A.0.167 [LOCKED BL] No recovery needed

Hello,
I just wanted to share how I have rooted my device today, and it was way easier than the methods I have been reading about so far.
My device: Xperia Z2 , C6543.
How I did it:
1- I updated my flashtool to the latest version, downloaded the 7.1.2.A.0.314 ftf for my region and flashed like instructed in the post. (Note that If you don't have flashtool installed, you have to go inside it's drivers folder and install the Z2 driver so it can communicate to the phone).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2759934
2- After the downgrade to the 7.1.2.A.0.314 version mentioned above, I went to the flashtool menu (My 65XX -> Root -> Force towelroot)
When prompted to, I have choosen the SuperSU option.
Then the towelroot app showed in the phone's screen, I've tapped on "make it rain" and let it run.
After that the phone restarted and it was rooted.
3. Okay, now that the 7.1.2.A.0.314 is rooted, an OTA update notification showed up to update to the same version (lol). Well, I just let it update, and the root was there (I confirmed by restoring some data in titanium backup).
4. After that, another OTA update showed up to update to 23.0.1.A.0.167. Again, I let it download and install.
Well, that's what it took for me to root my z2 in it's latest version with only one downgrade and no manual adb commands, no manual rootkit downloads, pretty similar to the way I've always rooted my ZQ (R.I.P - it drowned lol).
The credits are due to the hard-working people who made all the mentioned tools, I am only doing my part by sharing an easier method than what i've seen around. Feel free to share your toughts.
Laters!
Sorry to be noob! Will it break anything like camera x reality or anything? And for warranty, can I claim it by just unrooting it(it's in the su) ?
Did not break anything for me. Now I can use foldermount and transfer heavy apps to the external sd. Wonderful. As for the warranty, since there is no recovery installed and no bootloader unlocked, it is as easy as doing the step 1 in the procedure described. It will flash the unrooted system back.
But ist same method, if u use this or this tool.
This post doesnt deserve an original development section!
thanks. I will follow this guide as i had root, upgraded and lost it. But i've have been itching to flash stuff lol.

I am not sure I understand what you mean, but if you are talking about the xperiarootkit compared to the "force towelroot" from flashtool, I checked the scripts in advance and they seem to be the same thing yes. The only shortcut to what I did was not having to flash recovery, and creating customized ftf, etc.

I think you have to do all the stuff one again and root device. Then check the option for its root survival and do ota updates. I think you'll be fine with the updates.
Question, /System RW? (don't confuse it with a TA Restore, as it could only be restoring to the /Data partition).

I doubt you'll have system RW access as sony ric should still be running, but if root is working fine flashing nut's recovery should fix this easily.
root achieved and kept
Nice one thanks for the info worked well and updated to .167 ota and kept root.
Going to give this a try. Thanks
Thanks for the info, OP.
I used flashtool to downgrade my D6503 to .55, tried to use towelroot, no luck. used the CVE root exploit and got root, but after that update center failed the verification to .314.
Your method works, so cheers!

flashtool will wipe your phone unless you unselect data partition (not recommended). The rooting part is non-destructive so no that part won't your phone.

Tried to install nut's recovery with supersu option but all the apks in the script could not be written into system folder. Also could not install xposed installer. May have to downgrade again and avoid this method
update: no need to downgrade again. sony_ric prevents r/w to system folder even with root, so I just used ric killer by forty two: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/4-4-4-sony-ric-killer-t2953141
afterward I was able to install xposed installer via normal method.
Thank you for the tutorial. It worked fine for me.
What will happen if I do a factory reset via settings-menu? Will root be gone? Do I have to downgrade again or can I install SuperSU to get root back?

[OTA] Captured Pure Edition XT1095 update from 23.16.3 to 23.16.6 (stagefright patch)

I received a Motorola OTA notification for a minor maintenance update which patched the "stagefright" vulnerability in my Moto X 2014 Pure Edition xt1095. I captured the OTA ZIP file from my cache folder, and it is attached to this post. Size of OTA ZIP is 4.29MB. (Note that Motorola OTA updates are named for the software version from which you must apply the update, not the software version to which you are upgrading.)
This is for a stock, unrooted xt1095 running Android Lollipop 5.1.
Prerequisite:
System version: 23.16.3
Build number: LPE23.32-21.6 or LPE23.32-21.3
After update:
System version: 23.16.6
Build number: LPE23.32-21.6 or LPE23.32-21.3 (unchanged)
You should be able to adb sideload this from stock recovery if you know how. If you're rooted, you'll need to request the stock 23.16.3 firmware from Motorola, and at least flash system.img and recovery.img to get back to stock system and recovery. After you do that, you might be able to sideload the OTA zip.
Deleted, sorry.
Thanks! With public exploit code available now, this is all the more important. You can modify the updater-script to not require a stock recovery. It will work fine, as long as you haven't modified anything else in /system.
For the uninitiated, here's a version you can flash with TWRP. You must still have a stock system partition. SuperSU/Xposed is fine, but you can't have changed any files it needs to patch, like the dialer or camera. I've used it fine myself.
PS: If you do have Xposed installed, uninstall it, flash the update, then reinstall Xposed.

Flash fails (TWRP finds something incorrect with HindiIME file or somesuch). Can this be caused by me removing unneeded system apps?
EDIT: Yes it was, worked perfectly after reflashing system.img.
Thanks thenestor and Romracer worked perfectly as stated I went with twrp flash -
I just installed this update from the stock recovery and it worked flawlessly. Thanks for uploading this. My wife got it a few days ago and updated before I could grab the the zip file.

I'm rooted with adaway applied, I tried flashing romracer's file but I'm stuck on the boot screen saying that my bootloader is unlocked. Is it because of adaway?

i was rooted with xposed only, and now my phone won't turn on, stuck on the boot screen...
i have two questions,
If i reflash system.img, will that wipe anything?
is there a system.img only file that i can download, downloading 1.1 gbs on my slow connection will take 4 hours, i can't afford 4 hours without a phone....
After the ota, my phone won`t turn on, like many here. What i`m worried about is that my PC is not recognizing my phone in adb. What can I do?
I was also rooted, with stock everything else but hung on the unlocked bootloader warning screen. I'm thinking AdAway or Greenify must have modified /system since that's really the only root stuff I use. For the time being I just restored my /system backup and it's working but I'll eventually need to flash stock system.img I'm guessing. Otherwise I'm gonna end up accidentally tapping the update nag screen and screwing it up again.

OTA Update with systemless root

I just received a notification on my 6P saying that the january security update is available. The thing is that I'm rooted with systemless root, xposed, EX Kernel and TWRP. Can I update using the update button?
With systemless I believe you should be able to.
I just posted about this too....no one got back to me. I got the same message and have more or less the same setup as you. I'm scared to reboot and update lol

No.
If you have TWRP installed you will not be able to take an OTA.
Why bother?
Just flash what you want.
Ok, so if I reboot and my phone tries to install the OTA, what happens?
I have exact the same setup and tried to let the OTA install but in TWRP it aborted because of the mismatching kernel I think (at least it said it expected the generic device name Google angler etc and in stead it found Huawei nexus 6P Dees-troy etc)
So no harm is done when you try to update other than it doesn't work
But as far as I know when using xposed there's no use for systemless root because xposed is changing system partition
This update message won't go away. Can I flash it myself through TWRP with Xposed installed?
You cannot use twrp with an OTA. You need stock recovery. Also I believe that Xposed modifies /system and that in itself would prevent the OTA with stock recovery.

Nothing happens. it'll just fail to flash the update. It'll reboot to twrp, attempt to flash the update, and it'll fail the flash. So it just won't flash. Then you'll just reboot the system and nothing will be changed. I think you can flash these minor changes, but if you try to flash a major update through OTA it won't work with out stock recovery because that's part of the flash I think

This. At this time it's the only fix. I did it as well. Never flashed a factory image via fastboot before so I was a little intimidated but Heisenberg's guide is so smooth and easy to follow I did it in about 5 minutes lol. Plus it was a great learning experience for me.
Is it likely that eventually TWRP flashable zips will make this process easier? Or is there some sort of restriction with these updates for Nexus phones that will always require fastboot?
Not sure. I do know that the above method only took me about 10 minutes. Yeah it sucks you have to utilize a PC to do it but its really not that bad. Maybe in the future someone will figure out how to implement the updates via flashable zip in recovery.
I struggle with this too. I really hope that someone will find a solution to flash it via .zip (sadly I'm more a programmer than an Android-hacker, otherwise I would try my very best right now ).
Just to point it out, it looks like the article you are referring to has been updated since it was linked. I wouldn't want to wipe userdata, so I think 11. How To Flash The Factory Images (Return To Stock But Leaving Internal Storage Intact) is what you were referring to at the time. Apologies for the resurrection.
I just used the FlashFire app to update my Nexus 6p with the February update and it worked like a charm.

Did you install the update over the existing firmware the phone comes with or did you root and TWRP after installing it?
Stock firmware was pd2 when I got the phone two weeks ago. I updated then twrp then root through twrp.
---------- Post added at 10:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:39 AM ----------
I can't remember where I got the them but the file names on my pc is odintwrp-3.0.2.0- j700t.zip and UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip.
It was quite easy to do it only took maybe 10min total.
I'm not a developer, just someone who likes to tinker.
Meaning I took the ota. Oem unlock, odin flash twrp, before it can boot you need to pull the battery then put it back in and hold volume up+home+power. Then it will boot into twrp recovery. Then just install the supersu zip and reboot.
Meanwhile I can't get root to properly install on PJ3. Tried flashing SuperSU 2.76 and it says I don't have root in SuperSU. Ugh.
Edit: Completely forgot to flash the permissive/root friendly kernel. Working now.
Good deal i flashed the kernal after everything was done. Now i have to try and disable knox. Just keeps telling me i dont have root even when i have to grant permissions.

meaning you flashed the kernal after root and recovery, correct? Or did you have to go back to stock then re- root and twrp?
Yeah I did the kernel after everything. Then you have to reflash superuser through twrp.... although everything worked just fine without the kernel. Ie. Root, twrp and removal of knox.

Here you go. remember to pull your battery after flashing twrp. Then pop it back in and hold volume up home and power until you see twrp screen and make sure that superuser is on your external sd or you won't see it.

thx!!
I rooted my J700T back in June 2016. I want to know how I can update it to the latest update. When I try to, I get a popup saying it cant update due to the phone being modified in an unauthorized way. How do I update it without losing root and twrp?
I tried flashing supersu but logs say it cant mount anything and fails.. twrp flashed ok via odin.. phone still boots ok

Yeah I did the kernel after everything. Then you have to reflash superuser through twrp.... although everything worked just fine without the kernel. Ie. Root, twrp and removal of knox.

How did you remove knox?
Just used titanium backup to uninstall knox after i rooted.
If I purchased my SM-J700T this year at a T-Mobile store is it this firmware? I am sure I have the 2015 model. Device name Galaxy J7 Android version 6.0.1 Baseband J700TUVU2APK6 Rooted twrp custom kernel . I need to go back to stock to return it. I cannot find the correct version of firmware to go back to unrooted stock.

Need stock recovery for k550

If anyone has the stock recovery for the k550 it would be appreciated if you could upload it for me. I can't extract it myself from the kdz as my laptop isn't working right at the moment(mostly issues with wine for linux) but im trying to flash it back so then the system update will go through, then, ill have nougat and be happy again lol
~cheers

You need to flash the kdz file using LGUP and then you will be able to take OTA update. Then you can install TWRP and root.n And you don't need to lock the bootloader to go through this process.
Is Nougat easily to root? I'm rooted on mm now but nervous about making the update. Is xposed working?

If twrp is working then try and flash supersu, no harm in trying anything if you got a backup, right? (read somewhere that root and xposed were working tho)

LGUP does not detect my device :crying:[stylo 2 plus LG-K550 if wondering]. i have tried this over at this thread,

ARE YOU HAVING TROUBLE WITH LGUP NOT SEEING YOUR MOBILE?
Try this....... take the back off your mobile so you can get at the battery. Connect your mobile via USB. Start LGUP, if it does not see your phone DO NOT DISCONECT, DO NOT RESTART OR TURN OFF LGUP. Take out the battery and then put it back in.......let the phone restart on its own. LGUP should now see it.

seems it has detected my device after flashing superSu (root) to my device again, but it gives me an error "LGUP can't load the model[C\program files(x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP\model\com"
noticed that it didn't end with a bracket "]" so the information it gave me is probably incomplete (or a typo in the LGUP development:laugh but i am still stuck
No longer stuck lol, and have nougat 7.0 rooted! See my signature to see how to update and get root access!
