[Q] How to AVOID the Android 5.0 update on rooted phone? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I maintain several phones (2 Sprint GS4 and 2 Verizon GS4) for my parents, wife and myself. All of them have been rooted etc. Because updating to Android 5.0 would more than likely just confuse my parents who can barely understand it as is, I'd like to avoid taking the update on these phones. Is there a way to turn off the update so that no notifications come etc?
So far the only phone that has received a notification is my wife's phone, but there is a message that there is insufficient space for the update.

Long click on the notification hit App Info, then uncheck Show Notifications. That's the easiest way.

That seems easy enough, but since this is Google Play Services will I miss any other important notifications if I turn notifications off?

Well if you don't want to do that I just remembered you can simply change the build.prop. On the Sprint version you would change everything to OD2, system thinks you're on OD2, no notification. I don't know what the build numbers are on Verizon. There are other methods too such as FOTAkill.

I'm not saying I don't want to disable the notification as you suggested, I just want to know that I won't miss other important notifications besides the OTA.
I tried FOTAKill and it didn't work.
Changing the build.prop is a bit out of my league. I could probably figure it out...

I can't think of any other notifications Play Services gives... Play Store notifications are through the Play Store so those won't be effected. Like I said there are a bunch of ways to skin this cat.

The build.prop method is rather easy, navigate to /system/build.prop with a Root Browser and open up the text file. Near the top there will be lines with the build name and details, etc. (These lines will look different than mine on KitKat, but are just as easy to spot, I think there is a three letter one somewhere too that says NG2). Simply change them all to what the Lollipop build is called, save, sand reboot. When it checks for OTAs it will see you already have it.

Well that's easy enough. I'll give it a shot!

Ghost App requiring permissions unknown warnings

My dad and I both have AT&T S4s, and he is not tech savvy or anything. Basically uses his phone for the minimum. I take care of his phone tho, and when I knew the 4.3 update was available after trying it myself I updated his phone to MK2.
He's kept the same apps since he updated hasn't installed new ones yet ever since the update he gets this message randomly throughtiut the day.
It comes and it doesn't tell which app is causing the alert to trigger and when he clicks View Apps all it does it take you to the manage apps settings screen...
I have gone through the settings in his phone countless times, even gone as far as to cross reference the time of the alerts to App Ops to see if I could narrow it down... But what am I missing!!!?
I have never seen this before and I have been with android forever! Has anyone else noticed this since the 4.3 update. Or even before it? What do I do!!!

If anyone can advise a fix, that would be so appreciated. I am almost ready to try a full reset, but my dad doesn't want to lose his data so I'm trying to save that for my last resort..

i get that to.
Hey guys
How do you update Knox? I can't find an option in any of the settings screens and since there is no "app" to open that is Knox I don't know how to update it. He is still getting the message
Oddly enough it seems to be triggered every time he turns on his WiFi and connects to a network.

Light Flow update???

Hi,
I am wondering if any of you guys use Light Flow on the 6P and if you updated in the last day or so? I update it last night and a persistent notification is now in my notification bar and will not remove itself.
FYI the persistent notification thing is unselected in light flow (see attached).
Any ideas? Any of you experience the same thing???

I looked in the play store and there are many people complaining the new update is showing the persistent icon and no way to disable it.
Also you could go to settings and go to apps and try this:
settings>Apps>notifications>Block all
see if that resolves it

thanks for the reply, but if i block all notifications, i then get no notifications at all from light flow.
The developer is aware of the situation. Unfortunately it is a Marshmallow issue. He is working on a "legacy" app that will deal with the persistent notification. If you check the reviews in the play store he has replied to the recent complaints. On a side note it is situations like this that has taught me to not immediately update an important app without reading the reviews for a few days. Either that or have a titanium backup handy if the updated app is not playing nicely!

Here's Reactle's blog post on the persistent notification and other changes for Marshmallow: http://www.reactle.com/2015/10/changes-for-android-6-marshmallow.html
Basically, they were exploiting a flaw in the OS itself to gain control of the LED without a notification or root. That flaw has been fixed, and now without having that persistent notification LightFlow will crash.

Help with 'Do Not Disturb' Mode

Okay. Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe my phone's just not honoring my settings. But my DND mode isn't working. I have it set on a schedule to kick in everyday around 10pm and disable at 7am. I have custom exceptions for favorite contacts, alarms on, repeat callers on, but events/reminders off. I don't have any apps set for priority notifications. But I still get sound notifications for just about everything. On top of that, I still get reminders from the apps I set it on for (messaging apps, mainly SMS). Am I doing something wrong?
Mine force closes every time I attempt to go into the settings. The only way I can get it to work is by manually turning it on and off via the quick settings bar. It does work because I received e-mails, texts etc. while it was turned on and it never made a peep. I googled it, and other people are having the issue also.

Maybe it's your font settings? No problems with mine and no problems having it block stuff when activated. I use it daily when sleeping because I work nights.

Nope went back to default theme and font still does it even after a reboot
I had the same problem and it miraculously started working again
I had the same problem. Started playing around with notification settings for individual apps tonight. I believe I have the settings right to avoid getting notifications when I don't want them. Here's a screen shot of one of the apps. You have to go into each app you DON'T want notifications for and set them as they are in the screen shot. Hope this helps.

UPDATE from previous post - it would appear that my advise above is garbage. I continued to get notifications even after I made changes to individual application notification settings. I'm stumped at this point. Samsung needs to address this.

And while they are at it, add the damn LED to the do not disturb mode!!! I don't want to have a bright green LED shining in my face overnight, much less a blinking one.

Unwanted popup

My phone is stock, no changes other than a few apps have been disabled.
I am getting an unwanted popup after I receive a call. It wants me to install Instagram, or another program. I have scanned with Malwarebytes but it finds no viruses.
Any help in getting rid of this appreciated. Please see the attachment.
Thanks.

Do you have ES File Explorer (think I see it in the background)? Try uninstalling that app and see if the ads persist. ES File Explorer may be presenting adverts and popups.
Thanks, but that did not work. Onto the next guess!
are you using a custom launcher? some of them provide ads on your ohone.. also try removing any apps that are known for showing popups
Chinese apps tend to have overlays like that, especially those cleaning/boosting apps. Get rid of those and see.
When it pops up, do you see anything more in the expanded notification bar? If yes, then press and hold on it and tap on "app info/detail". From there you can see which app is displaying these pop ups and disable notifications.
Thanks, Using ADW. Removed and still there.
Don't have any of those, but good guess.
No way to expand the notification nor any way to get more information. Talked to Motorola support and they had me clean the cache and that did nothing either.
Last case resort, start uninstalling apps one by one with the newest one first. When the pop ups stop, you've found the problem.

Prior to using the last resort method provided by riggerman, you can view how much data/wifi each app is using that is currently installed on your device. This can be done by navigating to network info in your settings. Then simply compare that data to which app is eating up your memory at the time of the pop up. A more in depth method would to use an app that is designed to gather in depth data on installed apps specifically for the user, such an app would be Android Addon Detector available in the Play Store (link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.denper.addonsdetector). I wont write up the way to do it cause I don't have that kind of time at the moment, and it'll do you good to teach yourself given the internet and the app FAQ and developers site because knowledge is power, and knowledge also helps to quickly deal with little piece of bull**** that land on your path in life, such as annoying popups
Removed 2 backup apps and seems to have gone away, thanks.
Had the same popup problem. I said STOP in response it has gone away.

How can I remove the Covid-19 notifications that mysteriously appeared on my phone!?!

Running XXXNoLimits, OOS 10.3, Elemental X kernal
Did not update anything this week. Now, under settings-google there is "covid-19 notifications". Had to have been either carrier pushed or a google back door. I don't even have a google account on my phone!
Shows "on/1app" but when I push it the screen just goes dark until I hit back.
Titanium and App ops can't find it.
I keep bluetooth off and only turn location on when I need Magic Earth Maps, then turn it back off, however, the pisses me the f**k off that it has been loaded on my phone.
I have a Samsug Tab running Lineage and it is not there, but the tab is wifi only. Tried Lineage 3 times on my phone and can not get Signal messenger to work and that is a deal breaker for me.
Anyway, how do we get rid it this??
Is this the screen you are referring to, but with different info populating it?

I don't have any Covid apps installed so for me there are no settings to turn on or off; this form of contact tracing is not yet available where I live.
The big question is what app on your phone is being detected as a contact tracing app.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk
How do the notifications look like? Regular notifications? Perhaps take a screenshot when you see another one. You should be able to trace which app (or system element) is spewing out these nuisances by long pressing the notification and take more actions by tapping the gear icon top right...
@franken..... I actually don't get to that screen, but that is the right place. Checked a another Android and that is the screen it goes to, mine just goes black.
@timmmmm...haven't gotten any notifications as I don't have any covd apps.
Settings does, however show "on/1 app". I am guessing a glitch since I have leashed google w xxx, Titanium, and App Opps.
I have not done the last system update. Don't have a google account, but do have a google Fi sim card since I live overseas and it works here.
I read google pushed this out as a new setting, for those that download covid apps, blah, blah, blah.......but HOW?
And how do we get rid of it. Article I read on a UK new site said "usage and diagnostics" is where you can turn it off and on, my phone was and is set to off, but I still wanna get rid of it.
That's part of a Google Play Services update, you can't remove it.
If you don't opt-in explicitly, it should not have any effect.
Do you really want to trust that? I personally wouldnt trust anything said or done at this point. For sometime my phone's been acting weird. Note 9 completely stock. But my g7 power rooted since day one with a global variant still runs like a charm. I'd rather just remove it or better yet permanently disabled it through some exploit.

What exactly do you think the phone is doing with that Covid-19 notification setting without an app to drive it? Contact tracer apps need to plug into the local health authority, and only a few places in the US are doing it because people are so suspicious of big tech. I would gladly participate but it's not available in my area.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk
The only way to get rid of it is to delete Google Play Services. That's how they snuck it in. On Android Pie it's simple. Just debloat via ADB using pm list packages prompt and voila! it's gone. On Android 10 it works the same EXCEPT none of the google apps, firefox, instacart, or anything like that will WORK. So you can de-google all you want - they've baked it into everything. It's something I'm struggling with now since I was forced to upgrade.
