Screen defects

Haven't seen much about this, but anyone else having problems with bad screens? The first 2 KFs I got both had dead pixels. On the 3rd one now, and there is a dark yellow splotch in the upper right hand corner, very noticeable on a white background! Luckily I got it at Target and returns have been easy, but getting real sick if making multiple trips back and forth.... Going to exchange for #4 later. Just my bad luck, or is it hard to get a KF with a perfect screen??

No problems on the 3 fires I have

My Fire came with a perfect screen. Then again I ordered mine online from Amazon. Never really trusted Target with their hardware/software.
Both KF's were/are perfect. One via Amazon, one picked up at Walmart (my once a year shopping experience there).

Why would Target have inferior hardware?

They could've gotten a bad batch... But I've exchanged at two different Targets so far and still can't get a good screen.

That makes no sense. It would be the same either way. I got mine from target and it's great.

Wow, huge color temp differences in those screens! I've also had the small backlight bleed at the bottom center of the screen on all 3 of mine, seems there's no way around that, just the way they made the bezel.. :/
Here's a good simple web page if anyone wants to check their screen:

I exchanged for #4 tonight, will cross my fingers and open it later tonight.

I'm amazed to see the screen difference!
I'm on my second Kindle right now. Bricked my first one with a bad kernel flash, but the screens on both have been miraculous!
Just curious, were both Kindles on the same software version? I remember reading that Amazon disabled the light sensor. Maybe they changed the color in a software update. It's a stretch, but maybe that could help.
No problems here with my Kindle Fire.
Got #4.... and this is the worst one with 3 dead pixels this time!! Arrgghh!
I don't know if Target got a bad batch or what, but this is getting ridiculous. Gonna return for a refund and try Best Buy instead, maybe my luck will be better there.
You guys with the perfect setting screens, are you really taking a good look at them? Lol
This #4 had 3 white dead pixels, can see clearly on a black background...
I have looked carefully, and I can't see any stuck or dead pixels. I pre ordered mine from Amazon.

No reason at all.
OP: Run a pixel fixer for 2hrs+ (or overnight). Pixel curer, Pixel fixer, etc. They fixed a stuck pixel I had.
I had a few "dead" pixels on a couple I-INC monitors I bought. I read the setup instructions and there was a notice about dead pixels. It said after about a week of use they will go away. This happened to both of my monitors, they about about 6 dead pixels.
Granted those were non-touch LCDs, I think it might be worth trying the Kindle out for 3-7 days and see if they go away. It might just be a little annoying.
No problems on my pre-ordered Amazon KF. I also don't have the issue of light bleed around the bezel at the bottom.
The dead pixels I've seen on mine are black or white, AFAIK, there's no way to revive those. Stuck pixels (green, red, blue) are a different story and can possibly be unstuck with the software methods mentioned above.

I can't say that I have any dead pixels, but I do have screen bleeding issues in a few spots around the edges. It is very minor unless I am looking at something very dark on the screen and the Kindle itself is in the light. I am not to bothered by this, but it is an issue nonetheless...
So yesterday, I returned my 4th KF to Target for good. Went to Best Buy and got one from there - and guess what? NO dead pixels, screen is perfect! This one is a keeper, finally!
Interestingly, all 4 of the defective Target KF's had 6.0 installed, the one from BB had 6.1 on it. Obviously the one from BB was a later production run and/or from a different factory. Either way, looks like Target (mine at least) got a bad batch. Just happy to finally get one with a good screen, was almost ready to give up, lol.

I just got my Kindle Fire yesterday from Amazon and there is serious light bleeding on mine. I have sent it back for return.
I've played with two now and not seen that in either.

Whatsapp on Thinkpad

Hy community!
I am currently thinking of buying a Thinkpad.
My question is: Is it possible to install Whatsapp (current version) on thinkpad and run it without problems?
I tried it on my current Acer Iconia A500, but the applications says "device not recognized...". Is it because the Iconia has no SIM installed?
When I get a Thinkpad with SIM card will it work? Do I have to do it with the Titanium Backup method?
Best regards
I checked in the Play store:
The WhatsApp Messenger app states it is incompatible with the Thinkpad Tablet in both "tablet WIFI" and "tablet CELL" versions but it WILL work with my CM9 installation "Unknown Full CM9 on ThinkPad Tablet".
But when I flash CM9 to the Thinkpad I am loosing my warranty. Is this correct?
Is there an other way (with temporary root or so) to accomplish this problem?
you dont lose your warranty if your flash cm9 on it
if you send it in for repair or you mess it up, they just put a new board on it...
So, permanent Rooting the device is no warranty loss?
cool thing
yeah they just replace the board
however, id like to note that they do a pretty bad and sloppy job on it.
after i receive my tablet, the lines werent route as good as factory, they didnt use enough glue to glue the antenna in place, there were finger prints all over the the copper backing, it is missing some metal sheilds etc, the stick on copper werent stick or smoothed out at all.... etc etc
What depot did you send yours too? I have sent in many Thinkpads over the years and they have always come back pristine and looking great. Heck for the last 10 years all I have owned has either been Apple or IBM/Lenovo laptops. The IBM/Lenovo business class machines in particular the X and T series have never let me down.

Well it sounds great. One question persists. Do I have to use CM9 or will ANY rooted ROM do?
What criteria is responsible for Whatsapp to run?
Do I still have to backup on Phone and repair on Tablet with Titanium Backup?

hello
The center I sent it to was in Memphis, TN.
When I received my tablet - I was glad they replaced the screen (which had dust on it), and the power button (which broke), disappointed they replace my board (which was rooted),
Then I noticed the problem with the back- the Lenovo and ThinkPad sticker peeling off because they tried reusing it since they replace the backing plate (I end up going to ebay and buying two new stickers to correct their mistake, as lenovo support didnt even know those were stickers and thought they were one piece molded on the case)
Then I opened my tablet to install my Gobi 3000 card back in and I noticed a number of things wrong - including; Grounding strap for inverter not securely installed (I have since grounded it manually with a 12 gauge wire), LCD Cable was horribly ripped (I do not have a spare so I went electrical tape on it to fix their mistake), finger prints all over the copper backing, antennas not securely mounted and peeling off - grounding tape for the antenna peeling off - and all covered with fingerprints. The Antenna wires were also routed wrong so it would not reach my gobi card (I end up removing the board and rerouting the lines then installing my board again). I also notice all the metallic padding around the antenna and batteries were gone!
They replaced my cable that goes from the board to the power board with a weird cheap looking replacement. the battery was also not the one I had on when I sent my tablet in (i put a mark on it before I sent my tablet in)
The sticker for the serial number was put on pretty ****ty, so I end up removing it.
I also notice it was factory protocol to replace the screws when it was removed.... none of the screws were removed and they were all pretty stripped looking...
I just felt they could have done a slightly better job doing it... or if that is a problem, I would be more than happy to replace the parts my self...
when I called in because my gobi card failed, i had the option of sending it in to have them replace it or have them send me the card to replace it myself
I chose to replace it myself and that was when I found all these flaws in the repair...

Screen panel issues

Since the day I bought it, the glass panel is slightly raised on the left side. It's higher than the rubber line that runs around the tablet's edge! Back then, I thought it was nothing.
But today, I accidentally pressed down on that area, and the panel went to it's right position! A while later, that area popped back up again.
That's when I realised that on the left side of the screen, the panel wasn't flat with the surface of the tablet. Despite this, I face no issues with the touchscreen.
Is there anyway I can keep the glass screen down and secure? I don't want it falling of my fire one day....><

I would personally return it for warranty repair. I suppose you might be able to glue it, depending on how accessible it is, but in the future, they could refuse your warranty for a different issue if you attempt to repair this one on your own.
Issue is, I bought it from a local retailer cos it's not directly available her in Singapore through any other methods.
I guess it could be the heat causing the glass to expand...it does get really hot around the USB area while charging >_>

Call amazon. They will fix it and ship it for free. If your glass is bowing like that its defective. There is no way the heat from a charger would do that. Your screen is probably no longer sealed properly, which will ruin your fire because of dust and humidity

Yeah, Amazon should fix it, within warranty, regardless of where you bought it. Don't know if shipping to and from Singapore will be a problem, but it might be one you can work out.
Okay, thanks!
I will contact the retailer from which I bought my fire
Oh btw I have to revert to stock rom right?

Broke my screen - need to unroot to return

I managed to break my phone already. Dropped it in Lowe's & while the screen doesn't appear to be broken (I've got the Sedio Vitreo glass screen protector. That's probably what's holding the screen surface together), I only get a split second of yellow with black lines (has to be the Sprint splash screen) during startup, only on the bottom right side of the screen.
No real worries as I have the Best Buy coverage ($9.95 / mo, no deductible, no questions asked, no hassle return for repair / refurb within 3 days & decent loaner phone while you wait. Try to get that from Sprint). As long as I return all the pieces whether broken or waterlogged, they'll cover it. I need to unroot it just in case before the return so there's no chance of any hassle about rooting.
We don't have an HD TV (I know we're behind the times) so to connect via HDMI to a TV isn't an option. Can anybody point me to a good solution?
A quick search would get you http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40864691

Just take it in, no need to unroot. A broken screen is not a software issue so root has nothing to do with it. Best Buy repair won't care, the only ones that care about root is Samsung warranty repair.

Bricked phone - trying to do screen capture

I bought my nexus 7 on 12/31/2012 for work and have very few hours on it. I've gone to the dark side and started enjoying ios more (sorry xda) and pretty much kept the new toy in a drawer in my desk.
I was using it one day this month to Skype and was really thinking this was a cool and I was trying to screen capture and basically forgot how. I was holding down the power and volume down button and then it went off....never to come on again.
Sent it to Asus and they said it needs motherboard. The motherboards on eBay seem like a great fix. I've seen the ifixit pictures and actually took it apart during my diagnosing before sending to Asus.. So I fell comfortable in replacing motherboard.
My question is that I occasionally I see a cracked 2nd generation screen unit for cheap on Craigslist.
Can the screen of the gen 1 be put on the Gen 2?

They Dont use the same screen. You would have to buy a screen on ebay FOR the Gen 2 and replace it with that.
Thanks- then you probably can't use the motherboard of the Gen2 in the Gen1 can you?
