Weak wifi - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Compared to my Samsung devices it seems my nvidia shield TV has very weak WiFi. Even compared to my shield tablet. I keep getting disconnected to WiFi and sometimes it won't even connect. When it does connect I get about 1 to 2 bars showing on the grid. Anyone else have the same experience? I have requested an exchange on amazon so hopefully it's just my unit and this is not wide spread. My shield tablet has weak WiFi also but at least it doesn't disconnect.

do you have a dual band router? i learned earlier today that my shield can barely see/cannot see my 5g network on certain channels. grab a wifi analyzer app on your phone, and change the channel of your wifi to something less congested in the router configuration, could help with a 2.4g network as well.

Yes I do have a dual band. Might give that a go and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.

And if you're using 2.4, you're usually best off using channel 1, 6 or 11

Forgot to add that you should consider the placement of the shield vs your Samsung products. If its placed too close to other devices emitting rf or blocking the signal, you'll have problems.

I haven't gotten a chance to mess with the channels yet since it started working again, although have not tested speed yet. Been reading some reviews on Amazon that also mentions connection issues.

Started acting up again. Changing channel did not help. I just got my replacement so I will try this out for a few days to see how it goes.

Is this a normal iconia wifi signal?

Yay so I'm really happy about the iconia so far. The whole no acees to SD card through computer while connected to the computer will take some getting used to, but its the wifi that'll probably get this sent back. It's really bad. I've reset the connection half a dozen times since last night because it keeps hangin and can only downloads app when in the same room with the router.
Now the issue is that I'm laying beside the router now and getting 2 bars. If I sit up I get 3 bars. Yippee. The signal in the bedroom, on the first floor, get maybe 1 bar and I can't stream or download anything in there. I never get a great wifi signal in there', but its between 2 and 3 bars on my phone and netbook,. I wondered if there might be some interference so brought up the handy wifi analyzer and found 4 other wifi signals all on the first channel, so now my router is on channel 11. It didn't help any :-\
So if I exchange it, will the new unit possibly be an improvement? Is this just the way it is?
I noticed that the connection quality drops sharply the further away you are, but atleast on my tablet it still doesn't drop as sharply as in your case. I have the router here in living room and I get 65Mbps, everything works fine. Then if I move to bedroom or kitchen it drops to something around 20Mbps, yet it still works just fine.
What type of router do you use.I have a newer netgear with no issues my router is in the basement at front of house almost under the front porch.concrete ceiling above it. I can go out to my back yard approximately 200 feet and still get 1 bar and OK speed.I do notice. That the indicator bars do not exactly deplict your signal strength.
I also know there is a issue with some routers and the network card in this device I read in a thread long back.you have to turn off n or g feature I think it was.but do firmware update on router as well might help.not all routers are created equally Linksys sucks in my book. Lately
I can also see neighbors wifi signal but 1 bar they are 500 feet. Prob could not connect thou
Wish you lots of luck
hmmmmm
You could have a faulty Wi-Fi antenna ...
More likely, you are using a cheap router or a router with out of date firmware. Have you checked to make sure you have kept your router up to date with the latest firmware?
Also, have you tested this with other routers? If a multitude of routers show the same issue - you likely have a hardware problem with the a500 - if only your router shows this problem, then likely it is a problem with your local router.
a different unit MAY help, but I would try friends routers n such. My router blows but I can still stream Netflix no problem all the way across the house. I can't even do that on my laptop which has a beastly card. +1 for updating your router and device though, that might help.
Thanks for the replies. I have an old Motorola sbg900. I think I bought it 2 years ago. I have noticed that the iconia doesn't see as many networks as my phone does and the speedtest results are interesting. I left everything default in the app. By the router, I get 9 mb/s with the iconia vs 7 mb/s with the phone. In the bedroom, I get. .8 mb/s on the iconia and almost 6 mb/s on the phone. That is a huge drop and gap :'( I'll look up updating the router. I've never had connection problems before and we have 2 desktops upstairs plus both me and my roommates phones and both laptops and the wii and xbox. I just hope I can get some signal improvements on this nifty device.
sounds like firmware or...
I would find a friend with a different type of wifi router and test your connection with it. That way you get a pretty good indication of if you have a issue with your router or an issue with your Iconia.
Bother, my work wifi allows me to connect, but doesn't allow me to do anything with the connection. I am connected, but cannot do a speedtest. Relying only on bars the phone gets all 4 while the iconia gets only 3. The iconia also only sees 3 of the wifi signals in the building while my phone picks up 7 plus an open adhoc network. I know, it's time to visit with some friends so I can do a second test or maybe this is an excuse to go out for lunch today
ETA: At McDonalds, both devices had 3 bars and identical download and upload speeds. I've gone ahead and ordered a cheap $20 wireless n router to see if that improves things. It should arrive tomorrow, but since it's coming via UPS, it may not arrive until Monday.

Wireless reception

Is anyone else having wireless issues? This devices gets the worst reception of any other tablet, phone and laptop that I have had. After getting about 20 feet from the AP I get no bars. Wireless seems to cut off and on. I have a dual band AP. I have tried different settings on the nexus but still the same thing. My Samsung galaxy nexus phone gets twice the coverage. Maybe I got a defective tablet?

Wait, did you find something out that could help anyone else?
I have a dual-band router as well. 5GHz works well, when I'm in the same room. I go downstairs, and connection drops... 2.4GHz however works far better. To be fair, my router clearly notes that 5GHz doesn't travel through walls too well, but really I'd like to travel around my house and still have a WiFi connection
No I just found a couple other threads on the same subject.
That's a known range limitation with 5GHz band and not a Nexus 10 issue.

horrible WiFi strength ruining Nexus 10

Can anyone confirm or not if the crap WiFi strength on nexus 10s is an acknowledged fact? I have seen some say it is, yet still see other comments praising the devices WiFi saying it is stronger than ipones etc.
This is my second N10, I sent the first back due to WiFi performance and I believed it to be defective. My second devices arrival has suggested otherwise as I have noticed no improvement.... Am I just really unlucky?
On my home network, every other device has ho WiFi issues, but my n10 struggles! It seems to sho a decent signal strength in the WiFilist in settings, but a low strength in the top right corner.... Can anyone advise? I get similar strength issues on other networks (public and at friends houses. SO frustrating not being able to perform one of the most basic functions on a £300+ device). Was hoping 4.3/4 upgrades would help- nothing.
Should I get a third nexus sent out? Is this down to poor quality components? Anyone having same issues?
Thanks!
Hard to generalize, but mine has been rock-solid (on 4.3; I'm holding off on "upgrading" to 4.4). Seems to give faster throughput than my N7
My N10 seems to be at par or a bit better than my better halfs Ipad. Taking both tablets and going for a walk out in back (acreage), in the outbuildings, and near fences, the signal strength and ability to connect to my router and see other routers was actually a touch better with the N10.
When first getting the N10, it did seem to drop the wifi signal, but replacing the el cheapo several year old router with a newer medium price router cured that issue.
The Google Nexus 10 as well as the Amazon Kindle HDX are two of the few devices that actually support MIMO (multiple input multiple output) wireless.
This typically allows for very solid and swift wireless performance.
I suspect that software updates may have had some impact on the Wireless functionality of the Nexus 10, but that is also in combination with some types of access points, so it varies to each customer.
Some places I get really terrible wireless, but at both my work and at home, it performs extremely well.
Hopefully a future KitKat patch will address the wireless more. I notice that new binaries are included in KitKat pertaining to both wireless and Bluetooth for the N10.
Hello, I just became an owner of a Nexus 10. when I first time connect to my BSNL Teracom wifi router it is not connected. it is always showing connecting or obtaining IP address...
It connected through my S3 Hotspot but not through teracom router
I wake up in the morning and just press again the connect button. Bingo...it is connected..!!! Not understand why it is behaving like this. I am not done any changes in routers settings also. Is it not connecting b'coz the routers frequency mismatch or anything else ?? After once I switch off and on the router the same problem happens
all my phones including a Samsung s3, tab neo and also my laptop all are switches automatically connected to the wifi router.
Please help.
thanks in advance.

Yup... Crap WiFi on my nexus 10 too. Just randomly disconnects or is so slow that its unusable for streaming movies... I own a ton of android devices and this is the only one that gives me problems. When I turn it on, I just hope it stays connected. Let's hope this post goes through lol

Mine pulls 40mb out of a n wifi connection.. the main connection is only 50 -55 on average. I'd say its the best performing wifi device I own.
I have owned my N10 for over a year. The WIFI signal strength is good, but I often get some lag issues, which ended up being my router. When I have issues, I now reset my modem and everything works again. I have read that some people only have a 2.4GHz modem, and they have received better luck by limiting WIFI to that frequency only.

This might be an isolated problem? I walked to the farthest part of my house that still gave me full bars and held my hand over where the video showed and I was fine. No issues what so ever.
Since OTA1.1 AND doing complete factory wipe and boot I can no longer complain as it's rock solid no matter how it's held, at least on 2g.

I got to agree, my shield's WiFi is pretty strong next to and upstairs away from my router, never had any problems from the start.
I guess some tablets are affected more than others.
This is mostly a 5ghz wifi issue when you are at the edge of the range (2 bars). I'm going to be making a long term review video soon that will address this. Also having a cover can help as well.

I've taken the advice from some users on the NVidia Forums and have provisioned separate access points for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz so I can connect directly to each one when required.
It's a workaround until I get my RMA after the Cracked Case updated tablets are received and dispatched.

If your router allows it you should ALWAYS have your 2.4 GHz and your 5.0 ghz set up as two different networks. It will make the speed on your 5 GHz WAY faster. Also it allows you to pick specific devices to connect to each network type.
Name them both something different and give them both different passwords.

I just got my tablet yesterday. I was setting it up last night, and noticed ALOT of wifi lag. I don't really hold it in landscape, I hold it in portrait mode, and I hold it almost exactly where that video shows the wifi antenna to be. In the bottom right corner, I would think, is where most people would hold a tablet, so I am surprised they put the antenna there. You would think they would put at the top.
I will test this more tonight. I might exchange it if I see those same issues.

In landscape mode the antenna is at the top. It's where the stylus is. In portrait mode you can hold it either way.
My biggest concern is for a tablet that needs great 5ghz wifi performance, they only used one wifi antenna.

According to that video, the wifi antenna is in the lower right corner in portrait mode, right where I hold it.
I never have much luck with 5ghz wifi in my house, so I stick to the 2.4ghz band. I have a netgear R6250, and the 5ghz AP works great if I am on the same floor as the router. On the other two floors, it drops in and out on most of my devices (iphones, android phones, ipads, even my alienware x51)
I posted this in the Nvidia forum as well.
I've tested the wifi on my tablet in a bunch of different ways using ookla speed test and general chrome browsing. I have come to pretty much the same conclusion most people in here have. The wifi is weaker than most other wifi devices but this will not be noticed in an ideal wifi setup. For folks with less than ideal wifi setups, they are affected more.
There are a few caveats to my test: I am not using gamestream, so I can not comment on that. And I have such low wifi speed from my ISP (30mbps), that I can not test 5ghz top download speeds vs 2.4ghz top download speeds (because they both easily top out at 30mbps).
I want to go over the things that have improved my wifi performance.
1: Switching to 2.4ghz wifi. This has made the biggest difference for me. Paul Deemer was saying that not using 5ghz wifi is the best for the ST and I agree. I will switch to 5ghz when I gamestream and switch it back to 2.4ghz when I'm done gamestreaming (when I finally get my gaming PC back next month).
If you do need to use 5ghz wifi, see below for other improvements.
2: Using a wifi analyzer app to set my wifi channels up. My apple router is supposed to do this automatically, but when I used the wifi analyzer app I noticed that my channels were crowded.
I set my 2.4ghz wifi channel to an empty channel and I got a full bar more wifi strength in my living room. I set my 5ghz wifi to the highest channel I possibly could (I think 160) and I got a full bar more wifi strength in my living room as well.
3: Avoiding the wifi antenna. This only affects 5ghz wifi for me. When I use 2.4ghz this issue goes away.
http://youtu.be/7v3AR6gZNYQ
4: Using a cover. The cover seems to keep you hand from interfering with the wifi antenna. This is not a total fix, but it does help. Just like in this video at 6:30.
Wifi Death Grip Samsung Galaxy S4 Workaround: http://youtu.be/ySIUuMAvduM
5: Moving your router. If you're having wifi issues you could always try moving your router. I will be moving my router to my living room where I eventually will be gamestreaming.
All of this stuff has been talked about before in this thread and others. I just hope to help anyone out who is still having wifi issues.
I too noticed the issue was somewhat mitigated using a cover. But I still noticed many periods of lag (waiting for data to load) in apps. Even a few occasions of "Network connectivity issues". Reloading would make it go away.
I just sent my shield tablet back. In addition to the wifi, I have noticed twice now, the battery has gone from 70-80% to dead in just a few hours. With the screen off.
Strange ! Me that's reverse ! I have a 16 gb model. On a 2,4Ghz router.

How to enable/disable Wifi & Bluetooth on Shield TV

Dear all,
I own an Shield TV (first generation 500gb).
Starting the console today I'm wondering as there's no wifi connection.
Checking the network settings I notice that wifi seems to be disabled. I have no idea why resp. how this could happen.
I did nothing that could be the reason for that.
Now I am wondering how I can enable wifi as it is - also bluetooth - disabled.
I read about ES File Manager to be able to enable Wifi/BT but did not manage to do so.
Additionally I tested the app "Smart Quick Settings" but after enabling wifi it directly is disabled again (automatically).
Anyone here who can help me on that issue ?
Thx in advance & kind regards,
Markus
I have the exact same issue on my shield TV as of today, so far the wifi appears to be completely broken.
Very unhappy.

My controllers work ok though, so surely the BT is ok?

I deleted my network, couldn't get it to detect a new one. Rebooted, still same. Walked away for an hour.
Came back, wifi is there...
Sorry if that's no help.
Check date and time. Sometimes if the router is set with wrong time, the shield will get it and won't let you connect to internet.
Hey all. I am having the same issue and I see what is causing the problem. The shield is broadcasting the WIFI Direct SSID used for the controllers on the same channel my wireless router is using and it is causing a massive amount of interference. I do not think this(the poor signal quality) was intended by Nvidia as I have read articles about WIFI direct that suggest it should not interfere with the wireless AP but the fact of the matter is it does. I have searched their forums looking for a solution and I have not found one nor seen any effort by Nvidia to correct the issue. Just to get the normal response troubleshooting out of the way, I will list what I found in testing.
Here is what I have done so far to test this:
I am using 5Ghz currently. I have changed the channel to every channel my router supports. The WIFI direct signal follows.
I have tested by switching my shield over to 2.4ghz. The WIFI direct signal follows.
From this I know the system is programmed to use whatever WIFI signal the shield is also connected to for internet. It will always overlap.
I used WIFI analyzer on a tablet to watch this behavior. It is very easy to see the signal quality of whatever channel you are on degrade when the shield is turned on. When I turn the shield off, the signal quality of my WIFI network is fine. The app uses a 10 star rating when evaluating signal quality and my channel drops to 4 stars when the shield is on and is a 10 while it is off.
The problem I am looking for help with is the fact that the shield is unusable on the WIFI for anything that needs the network. Gamestream is one of its main selling points and it unusable while on WIFI. It constantly pops up a message stating high packet loss and games hiccup/freeze often. Streaming video is the same. In other forums I have found viable workarounds like network power adapters or using a wired controller instead of the Shield controllers but I am wondering if there is a way to just force the WIFI direct on the shield to use a different channel. Is there an app or secret setting in Android that would allow me to control this feature? Putting it on a totally different channel would in my mind be the easiest way to solve this problem and it baffles me that Nvidia has not already built a setting into the Shield's OS to do it with all of the complaints online about the wireless on this device. Maybe it is just not possible. Let me know if you find something. I will be looking as well.
Seeing similar behaviour - My Shield is showing a "DIRECT-" SSID and whenever this is visible my WiFi drops to unusable state.

Same problem, ShieldTV uses the same 5g channel as my home router. I want to know how to turn off wifi on the Shield TV.
My power went out today, and now it has no wifi options at all. I can't believe no one has figured this out here after a year!
And after almost three years, I'm still struggling with this problem.
Whenever the Wifi direct SSID comes up, I can't properly stream video content anymore from my Nas.
Is there no solution / workaround for this?

That's not an option. I'm streaming media through the WiFi signal from my Nas to the Shield. I only want to get rid of that interfering WiFi direct signal the Shield is emitting.
