[Q]Looking to buy a galaxy tab 4 - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a galaxy tab 4 tablet or something similar for under $150 if there's better options out there. I'm basically looking for something I can root, flash and just tinker around with. I noticed there's a bunch of different model numbers, is there any models that cannot be rooted? If i go out and buy a brand new one will I be able to root it?

I bought the tablet for my son. I have a sony tablet z2 and i am surprised that the tab works very well. I thought that it would stutter,...but it is very good beginers tablet. I have bought him SM-T533 10.1 WI-fi model which has a new 64bit snapdragon 410 SOC version...despite the low PPI on tablet the display is nice and also the battery is powerful. As for rooting i think you could easily root it...but since it is working very well why would you like to root it for. buy it and enjoy

SM-T530 (Wi-Fi only), SM-T530NU (Wi-Fi only, IR blaster), SM-T535 (4G) for the 10.1 inch series, SM-T330 (Wi-Fi only), SM-T330NU (Wi-Fi only, IR blaster) for the 8.0 series. Those are the ones with real custom rom support. Cyanogenmod 12.1 on this tablet is very nice, especially blisspop. Most models can be rooted, but AFAIK the SM-T533 cannot be rooted.
I remember reading that the SM-T533 (10.1), SM-T333 (8.0), and SM-T233 (7.0) can't be rooted yet. Some of the AT&T and Verizon branded models (SM-T537A, SM-T337A, SM-T537V, SM-T337V) can't be rooted because of the locked bootloader and there's no chance for roms on any of them IMO.
Oh, a guide to the model numbers: they're all SM-T###. The first # is either 2, 3, or 5. Any model number where that first number is 2 is a 7.0 inch, 3 is an 8.0, and 5 is 10.1. The second number is always 3, don't worry about it so much. The last number can be several numbers: if it's 0 it's a Wi-Fi only model, 1 is a 3G model, and 5 and 7 are 4G models. So: SM-T231 is a 7.0 3G, SM-T335 is an 8.0 4G, etc.

If you're looking for a travel friendly model go for the sm-t330nu galaxy tab 4 8.0
mostly the same as the sm-t530nu
easily mod-able and many/most rom builds for sm-t530/nu can be ported to sm-t330nu with a kernel build and some
correction of proprietary binaries and libraries, usually sound.
also you can set up a chrooted distro on external sdcard and run at terminal, this comes is very handy for kernel builds
and similar smaller projects, especially for projects that encounter issues when attempting a cross-compile for arm.
As long as you have the chrooted distro established correctly, including the kernel headers for your tab model installed
in the right place, you can achieve native compiles for the tab on the tab.
I have the sm-t530nu and the sm-t330nu and both are set-up the same in that regard, very handy.

[Q] should I buy it ?

Hello guys
I want to buy the tab 4 t230 mainly for reading pdf files
is it a good tablet and how about its performance ? I don't want it to be all laggy
thanks for your help
I don't know about the 230, but I have the 330 model and reading PDF files, and any other sort of document is a overall good experience for me. One could make the argument that bigger is better, but for me having the 8" model in horizontal or even vertical layout has worked quite well when it came to looking at notes, editing documents or even reading textbooks for college lectures/classes. I haven't noticed any lag when it came to just looking at a file, only when it came to running graphics intensive games.
(Quick summary) I use the 8" tablet daily and love it. recently, I purchased two textbooks from the play store and reading them and other PDF files work perfectly. :good:
-still it's always good to browse around.
Update: Before I made the purchase on the 8" model I read around that if you have a little bit extra it was a good idea to buy the 8" model over the 7" cause of the different processors inside. So it's all about how much you're willing to spend.

Edit. I would not buy the 7...
I bought the 8 and the below is for the 8...sorry. I forgot to mention that.
The tab in itself is decent, but with samsung pushy BS Apps the tab is slower...
However, should you buy the tab >> Root device with Towel root >> Freeze / uninstall all bloatware >> Install nova launcher >> Disable animations system wide >> Move larger apps to SD >> Presto = You've got a good tab!
Samsung software is not needed whatsoever. You can get a huge performance advantage by removing bloatwares and providing near android stock performance with nova launcher and animations disabled.
srsly no, i am still unable to root it, for the same price i would suggest a nexus 7
I rooted it out of the box a night or two ago. Just got it.
Same here, root capabilities were available a few weeks to a month after it was available for purchase back in june. I bought my tablet back in May when it first came out. However, I would still agree that a nexus 7 would be a good purchase if you just want to use a tablet for reading PDFs. Actually the Nexus 7 2013 edition is on sale for $159 on Ebay. The Nexus is still Googles current-gen device as of now and has many accessories and what not available, while it took months before I could even buy a cheap case for this tablet ( Better cases and accessories are out now, just not a plethora made specifically for the Tab4).

What is your device model? My tab is the 8 inch one. The 8 and 10 have similar specs and processor whereas the 7" tab has a marvel based processor and thus is different methodology to root.
Also, Yes I did update to latest firmware on my tab. Opened the box, ran updates, and rooted all about 3 days ago.

thx for replying, mine is the 7 inch SM-T230, guess i will wait awhile
I do too know if I am speaking out of place, but can you return it and get the 8? Fr9. What is love ready Modders are having issues with the 7. The 8 and 10 are where it's at. I believe the 7 will always be sluggish.

yeah its a gift from the telephone company, if i get to pick i prolly will go with the 10 inch one, or the new sony z3tc
Ah, you might be out of luck until they can find a better root method for the marvel processor in your model..
Thiugh, reportedly if you go to the towel root thread it has worked for 7 inch users.

Galaxy Tab A 7.0 2016 Vs older Tab 4?

I use the Galaxy Tab 4 in my product line that relies heavily on the bluetooth performance, especially SPP.
Tab 3 lite failed miserably with random bluetooth issues like disconnects, etc..
Unfortunately, I see that samsung is discontinuing, or has discontinued the Tab 4 line. But I also saw a brand new Tab A 7.0 model, likely its successor.
My ultimate question is, What bluetooth chipset does it use compared to the Tab4? is it the same? different? Worse or Better?
Any ideas? Thanks.
I wouldn't bother with that device anyway. Samsung have locked it down and locked it's bootloader.

That didn't answer my question. I dont give a rats *** whether the bootloader is signature locked or not as it bears no relevance to what I am doing, and my product line. This isn't about root. Besides CPU glitching could fix that, But I digress.
I needed to know its bluetooth performance, or what is the best tablet for the price that contains the same bluetooth stability as the Tab 4.
My application is mission critical on the bluetooth SPP profile, and I had found the Tab 4 met those expectations, whereas the tab 3 lite or any "lite" tablet did NOT.
any thoughts? Thanks.

Wrong forum, this is for phones A3/5/7/8 not tablets.
Sent from my SM-A500FU
Well I seen Galaxy A, I figured thats where it goes...
Sorry, Could a moderator please move it into the correct forum? That would be appreciated. Thanks!
Just to update, the bluetooth performance and range is total garbage. Now looking for an alternative...

Galaxy Tab 4, 7" 16GB - does this exist?

Hi All,
I am trying to look for the Tab 4, 7.0" in 16GB.... does this exist? Because if so, I am having trouble trying to find it... All I can find is either the 7.0" in 8gb.... or I can find the 8.0" in 16gb....
So if there is a Tab 4, 7.0" with 16GB storage, what is the model number for it please?? like T230... ?
Also, does the Tab 4 Tablets feature the Knox security?? And if so, is it permanent, like the newer devices... Or can it be reset with Triangle Away, like the older devices (ie: my phones, i9100 and N7000).
Any help gratefully received.
Basically mum wants to treat my dad to a Tablet, but for under/around £100. I am basically trying to find one that is very customizable and has a great community of ROMs and is safe from things like Knox. Is the Tab 4 my best option, or are there any other budget Tablets out there... with a large community of ROMs and safe for flashing...
Many thanks, Lister

Android GO ports for the SM-T230/231?

So recently ive heard of this other version of android called "Android Go" which is basically a stripped down version of android, so i wonder if that version of android might be compatible to the Samsung galaxy tab 4 7.0 linup to give it access to modern stuff.

My guess? Not likely. The hardware is too old and it's difficult at best to work with the code. Better to stick with the few kitkat roms left that run as fast and slimmed down as possible, preferably with a overclocked kernel.
I'm speaking as an owner of a 7 inch Tab 4, with the Marvell chipset. If you have the 8 or 10 inch screens, you may have better luck finding a ROM running on a newer version of Android.

Old Galay Tab a 2016 (SM-T285M) ROM update

Hi everyone, I received 2 Galaxy Tab A 2016 7 inch tablets in excellent condition, to keep working for 2 kids.
This device came with android 5, and I'm trying to upgrade to any newer version in an attempt to use google family control, and improve app compatibility.
I would like to know where I can look for an odin rom to see if the compatibility with this model, has anyone used it here?
