Use Thermal Paste to Cooling the G3 - G3 General

Many people struggle with the heating issue on the G3. We know that high temperature is not good for the CPU. And I discovered a unique way to solve this issue. Check out this crazy video I made and hopefully this would help you on modding and overclocking!:fingers-crossed:
But keep in mind, I am not responsible for any damaged devices. This mod would damage your warranty.

Pretty cool, haven't had any major heating issues in the short time ive owned the phone personally, but nice idea
Heres the video for anyone interested

Cool idea! I'm considering doing it now. (the yellowish tinge on the screen due to overheat is driving me nuts)

This looks awesome, well done! :good:
Could you give us some details before and after mod? Benchmark scores and temp?

Check the video, I use antutu and geekbench 3 for benchmarking. The temperature is around 60c+
And unstable core clock speed caused phone crash sometimes.
But after modding, issues solved

I don't know exactly what is the actual space between the 801 and the phone metal body but it realy looks like you put much too much thermal paste
What will happen soon or later is that all that thermal paste will start flowing all around the chip.
Then since most of the time when you use, and heatup, your phone it remains vertical, the thermal paste would probably contaminated all the battery slot.
I hope you did choose a dielectric thermal paste...

The thermal paste is fine and stay underneath the CPU, it does a really good job on cooling, it may be little too much in the video, but actually the gap between CPU and the metal is huge

it's the cooling affect great? Cause I'm a heavy user and my d851 always feels like it's going to explode from how hot it gets

A very good idea, never looked in to what is inside the phone! Will definitely be doing this tomorrow! [emoji106]

What temperatures are you getting during standard use (i.e. browsing, music etc. - not gaming)? I am currently getting 65-70 and would like to cool it down a lot.
Sent from my LG-D855 using XDA Forums

I did the modification yesterday and here are some logs before/after modification:
Before:
- CPU temp phone idle: 55-60 C
- CPU temp phone in use (Playing 2K video or browsing): 60-70C
After:
- CPU temp phone idle: 40C stable
- CPU temp phone in use (Playing 2K video or browsing): 45-55C
My next test will be in GPS mode in my car during a sunny day. This was shutting down my phone due to high temperature.
But so far, it seems to be positive while regarding only the measured temperatures.
PS: I'm using CPU Temperature app.

If you realy want this thermal mod, don't use thermal paste, use a good thermal pad.

I agree with this,
I would rather use a thermal pad then paste.
The pad could also easily be removed for waranty reasons without it being noticable.

Well, I don't know what kind of thermal pad you are using, but from my experience, thermal paste is MUCH more easier to remove and clean than a pad. Pads stick really bad.
I went with thermal paste and everything is ok, don't apply too much of it... It will not give better results anyway

Or maybe a copper shim, plus "thin" layers of thermal paste?

Did you get a sense of "how huge" the gap is? If it is close 1mm maybe a thermal pad or a copper shim would be better; or what do you think?

SGS ultra hot during Dungeon Defenders

Hi guys,
I'm just wondering, my phone gets ultra hot when i'm running hd games or dungeon defenders.
It's so hot that it's barely comfortable holding the phone.
touching the screen on the left keypad (which is the top left of the phone - near the cameras) is near impossible and borderline scalding and blistering.
Are you guys experiencing this on your phone?
I have similar during "Medieval Castle Defense", especially if I have brightness turned up.
Since I have rooted my phone and locked its upper clock to 800MHz this has decreased a lot, its now getting only hand warm. Performance is still good - no lags, no hangs, and if I need more power, I can just "unlock the lock".
So I guess while using very graphic intense applications while having brightness not drecreased, this is normal.
Thing is, I don't have brightness up that high. I usually keep it in the low region. And by low, I mean in the 10-20% region.
I'm surprised that the phone cooks up a lot during intensive gaming. a bit worried that it might fry itself during gaming..

Dungeon Defenders working on SGS2 already?
Yes, this the only and first game that I have found makes the phone exceptionally hot, in particular near camera area, even some of the heavy graphical gameloft games only make the device warm, must be something wrong with the game I would say, removing the game

From the tear down, the problem lies with the processor. or mainboard.
What's your settings?
Rooted/unrooted?
Rom?
I'm running stock unrooted 2.3.3 and i'm having this problem.
I did notice that it doesn't get heated all the time. Hot yes, but not all the time. It does mean that it might not be safe to run background apps while heavy gaming.
Im geeting the same problem with guns'n'glory and robo defense. I have brightness at 50% but the phone becomes a fire risk after about 30 minutes of play.

Badly designed phone or game not optimized well enough for SGS2?

Not sure.
What is your phone setup?
i'm running unrooted stock rom I9100XWKF-1
What are you running on?
I have read somewhere that KE-2 version does not overheat.
Cannot confirm that though.
I have Asphalt 6 a racing game which isn't playable with my silicone cover around it. It will eventually lag and will stop. Without the cover i have no problems. Also having this problem with the gangster game from gameloft.
Guys, the actual problem on the phone is heat dissipation. It's very thin and made of plastic. So,all the heat the processor generates goes directly to its environment.I don't think it's going to get burnt or something, but it makes everyone feel uncomfortable.
The best solution available for those who don't want to sacrifice any performance is rooting and undervolting. Most phones should be able to handle 1200MHz at 1200mV.This saves you from a good amount of overheating.Tegrak Ultimate or custom kernels allow for undervolting for those who haven't bothered yet.
I for one am overclocked too,but don't experience any overheating that often.Only when I go up to 1.6GHz my phone overheats a lot,but still, not as much as when it was stock.
I havent had any game really warm up my phone, this game makes the phone just a tad bit warm like angry birds.

I can coming from KE2 - same issue with RoboDefense. I did factory reset the phone and I think it solved the issue mostly. I tested it only briefly so cannot confirm 100% as I uninstalled the ancient RoboDef version I had short after that and installed a new one from market. Phone did got warm, not burning though as it used to.
I did the factory reset because I suspected something's draining the battery and couldn't tell what (factory reset solved this as well) so I think it has something to do with combination of some processes which are running concurrently.
I am currently running the KE2 kernel and I am here to report that I have heating issues when playing HD games also. The heat really bothers me or shall I say worry me a lot? I'm looking to root my phone and underclock it so it won't get that hot.

Yeah,me too.Believe me,I had some serious overheating at stock speeds, let alone when I tried 1.4GHz.I used to underclock to 1GHz or 800MHz to play games in fact.Since I made it 1.6GHz,overheating adios.Well, kind of.Still,it's far better than stock.Never burnt my finger with 1.6!

So we may say that Exynos is done for 1.6. and underclocked and this pisses our little dual-core gem off ))
But i'll give it a try. Actually most of the time phones get hot ehen they're intensly used for connection. I never had CPU overheating any of my phones till now. I gues Samsung's own softcraps screws their hi-tech device. A slimmed modified undervolted-kerneled ROM without Samsung's softcrap will do the job...
By the way..t hanks for the heads up man...
try underclocking to 800mhz, performance shouldnt suffer too much, and the phone wont get as hot.

Well,it's not guarranteed this will also work on other's devices.Keep in mind that every CPU is unique, for many reasons that I won't discuss here, you probably already know. Many things are in play here though. Some people have even experienced overheating more than normal when undervolting.Things are reaaaally ****ed up.It's probably that with changes in voltages, resistances also change inside the chip. That MAY be causing it,just taking a wild guess here,so take my word with more than one pinch of salt.

Temperature and humidity sensors

Now that the GS4 has been around for a couple of weeks I was wondering how well these sensors work and whether anyone has found interesting use cases. Any interesting new apps which use them ?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS50aGVQYXplLkFtYmlhbmNlIl0.
The Ambiance app is a great start and a must-have app for these new sensors. This would be a great thread to monitor the progress of the collection of appsvthat make creative use of specifically these thee new sensors of temp, pressure, and humidity. As far as I know, Ambiance is the first and only right now.

Speaking of cases... do they compromise sensors?
Question: how accurate is the temperature sensor when measuring the surrounding temperature? Does the device heat interfere with it or is there a workaround for this problem?

I personally find the sensors inaccurate, but that might just be me. In rooms I've felt cold it told me it should be warm, and vice versa. Maybe that's just me, but I think the heat of the device is interfering quite a bit.
For me it's about 5 degree's out comparing to 2 a digital and an old style thermometer I have.

The sensors work well in general. Temperature one is pretty accurate (within half a degree) AS LONG AS the phone is doing nothing and you are not holding it. Touching it or heat from the CPU/GPU do affect the result up to 5-8 ºC. The hygrometer I don't know how accurate it is, seems to vary quite a lot. And the barometer is very accurate.
You can have a look at the raw data from the sensors using "SensorGuru" from the Play market.
Cheers.

I was just about to reply to you with a screenshot It reads 21.6 for me now and my "el cheapo" digital thermometer says 21.9 so I guess they're both not too far from the true temp. A case can def keep some of the heat and distort the reading of course. I ignore where the measuring point is located.
It's quite cool to have all these sensors, makes you feel better for spending 500GBP on it haha. Peace!

Its not the SD810 that overheats

Well today I installed the slyle potrait app which Sony finaly released, in two minutes I got the the notorious message saying that the camera will close if it keeps getting warm and after one more minute it closed. Could it be that the one to blame for the overheating is the camera software itself because I've never seen the message before and I've done some serious usage of the camera. I'll leave a link to the playstore so you can test it on your own!!! Any other thoughts would be much appreciated.

Its not only this app problem. Open camera and go to Effects, play with it for few sec and you gonna get message that phone is to hot...
Its actually hilarious that most of companies had time to create window with info about to "hot phone", instead of spending this few minutes thinking: "wait... we just created phone and app that get really hot making it no usable at all... maybe we should fix that? hmmm?"
I would not be mad if companies would spend this 2-3 months getting their balls together and make optimized phone and apps, instead of covering their failure behind window like "phone need to cool down... closing app"
Sad part is that its not only Sony problem, most of phones have this... No one give a flying crap to think about it and fix it...

It never occurred to you that these apps are heavily using CPU and/or GPU?

I will share when I find the time to write it my back cover never came loose but I definitely noticed heat fatigue on both the SoC and... Another chip, can't remember what it was - maybe the radio (it was a semi-large chip, second biggest after the SoC). Why can't I be serious? Fact is that the SoC is one die containing CPU, GPU and RAM. In normal circumstances these are the highest consumers of power and generators of heat. An exception is if you've got heavy traffic on radio though, and I mean max bandwidth on a LTE or 802.11ac connection, for an extended period of time; I doubt it was that in this case. Or maybe it was...?
Also as a developer I know that software can have bugs that cause unnecessary CPU or GPU usage. You're just speculating here without hard evidence... If you can monitor CPU/GPU clock speeds and/or temperatures while this happens and show us that it's not high, then I will stand corrected.

Maybe it's a bug. Is this a brand new app? I don't run stock sorry, not up to speed on the Sony specific stuff.
It could also be a simple case of neglect for our ol' Z.
Either way, cross your fingers and hope it gets solved in an update. It certainly sounds like it shouldn't be working so intensively.

no its not new and its not a case of neglect because i had flashed the app to my phone quite some time ago
But your OP says you installed some app which Sony just released?
I meant neglect from Sony; ever since KitKat our devices have had issues. But, on that note, how does (whatever old app you're talking about) working fine in the past but worse now = not a case of neglect? If the app is an identical version and your firmware is also identical version to when it was working well, but now its not working well, then it could very well be a case of wear and tear. I don't really understand, I'm just going through the process of elimination.

I don't really understand, I'm just going through the process of elimination.

i flashed the app from a mod, the app wasnt meant to be installed at sony xperia z but now sony published the app at Play Store for all xperia (i think some old ones are not combatible). The app had the same issues before but i didnt want to post a thread before since it wasnt officialy combatible with my phone

T Mobile V20 really really! low score on antutu!!

As a gaming I always configure my phones for performance using Antutu as a baseline. For some reason the top score im getting with gaming battery saver off is 120k... 110k was my worst.
I saw some low FPS on the 3D bench which almost made me return the phone. The N7 was always hitting tops 145k so this is weird to me.
I know for some people benchmarks are a waste of time but for me, low scores indicate an issue.
Idk if mine are good

That is low. I've watched a lot of reviews on Youtube and it seems right at 145k is the average for the V20. I'd take it back and get a new one.
Try running the test after not using the device for a while. My highest score was 148k. If The device was hot it was ~100k. Mine heats up while gaming more than I'd like.
I'm over 140k.. fine here
All of you using T mobile version or at least snapdragon 820? If so what did you took, remove or uninstall from the phone? I right now drained the whole battery for its first fully recharge and im still looking on how to enter the boot menu in order to clean the cache completely.
Thanks for the help.
I had to give up my Note 7 and bought LG v20 yesterday.
Believe me, LG V20 feels like much more faster than Note 7.
All the bloatwares make Samsung phones slow. LG V20 has very minimal of their brand apps, and those are necessary, like Remote control app, etc. Rest are just pure Android apps.

148k here. Haven't tested below 145k.

Best to do benches after a fresh reboot. Minimize crap running I'm background. Plus disable or uninstall bloat. Benches are just that, a place to start to see how hardware compared to another. Your low score could mean nothing.
Geez I might hafta update to the v20 from the v10 since the 808 only achieves a 1/3rd of the scores some of you have gotten.

The 808 is hot garbage. LG should have never used it. It always ran hot and bogged down with minimal effort.

I think the reason the 808 was chosen was because the 810 at the time was running hot and throttling making the performance terrible. I am glad the 810 wasn't used at the time.
TMobile called and offered me an upgrade for 2 dollars more a month and I might just take it.

What have you done to the phone? What carrier V20? I removed some bloat, drained/charged the battery completely and clean the cache. Btw Im trying to post screenshoots but my V20 only do screenshots on png, is there a way to change that?
Samsung phones take screenshots on jpg by default.
T-Mobile AnTuTu Test
I have the T-Mobile variant and this was my score.
Is there a way to take screenshots in jpg? Is really annoying having to upload my screenshots somewhere else in order to convert them.
