Ragequit - X 2014 General

.
I've been waiting to have a Moto X phone since long, doing a lot of things to try to have enough money. Finally I had enough to buy the Moto X 2014 in February.
I was always of those caring darn much for their phones, because we didn't want to buy a case or a bumper that would hide away all the careful design.
But today because of a silly accident, me taking my phone to check a notification, my friend raising his hand to grab out a handle, and there goes my Moto to the floor. I had never ever scratched a phone, and now this freaking Moto X 2014 is completely shattered, the Oled screen utterly corrupted, the touch layer totally outed.
Frak this thing, Frak Motorola, useless piece of design, I don't have enough money to live without the fear that I may break it again, because the designers can't make a phone that lasts without having a case.

Really? If you have a wreck is it the car manufactures fault?

Was this really even necessary? This is what happens when you drop phones that are almost all glass in the front. It doesn't mean Moto phones are garbage. I've seen more than enough of those terrible iPhone screens shattered but everyone praises their quality. That is just a risk you take when you don't keep your phone in a case.

One of the dumber posts on xda...

Try dropping that glass S6 or an iP6+ without a case on and see what happens to those.

Get a supcase bumper case. Dropped my 2nd moto x several times and also at like head height and still no cracked screen.

Does XDA have a button for the opposite of a thanks? Why is this post even here?

cool story bro.....

Next to time buy a phone with titanium screen
Although it wont display anything
But hey it will survive the drop

My 1st gen Moto X's screen cracked without being dropped, so I consider this one a major improvement. Don't drop your phone-->screen won't crack (unless it's 1st gen Moto X).

I don't ever use cases on my phones, so I'm always super careful. A couple of months ago I took my phone out of my pocket with wet hands (dumb, I know...) and my Moto X went FLYING. It ended up 10 feet away on a hard tile floor. Not a scratch on the screen or the back. Some fellas are lucky, and some ain't.

Why isn't this locked?

So how many of you actually run a "case"?

I didn't post this in the Q/A as I think it's rather more of a general discussion topic than a pure question but if it's still believed to belong there please do move it
With that said I've read through multiple threads in regards to how great the phone is and the general feel of it being great but it makes me wonder, those who say it feels great ergonomically and all, do you run a case or naked?
I do have the Griffin case on mine and let's face it. It does feel a bit different but I'm a bit worried about running it pure naked. Seems like it would get damaged way too easily.
I have the dev version, and even though it has the woven design back, I still find it a bit slippery in my hand. I have the Incipio Feather case on mine and absolutely love it. I do miss the dimple on the back with the case on, but it feels much more comfortable in my hand with the case, I don't feel like I'm gonna drop it.

Always naked. What's the purpose of a case?
Sent from my XT1060 using xda app-developers app
I too have the woven black back and found it more slick than expected, but i wouldnt want it too grippy that it would grab in my pocket. This phone is slim and sexy. No reason for a case other than maybe drop protection. Don't drop your phone and keep it naked.
I was running naked but the woven threads of the back started to sneak out of the plastic right along the camera lens. Got a Sup case to fix that.
Sent from my XT1058 using xda app-developers app
Well, first because this phone feels really unergonomic for me. It's really slippery and I feel like I'm holding a Dove soap bar. Second because I absolutely loathe scratches. If I see a scratch, I have to go get a new phone, even if it's a cheaper one.

If you get a thin-enough case, it will not add bulk.
I run a case on mine, because I keep the phone near the shower to listen to podcasts / youtube videos when I shower. The case seals up some of the "seams" around the phone (e.g. power button, volume rocker, SIM card slot). Reduces the potential entry-points for water to get into the device.
I'll get my dev edition tomorrow as well as a diztronic matte case. The back of the Moto X will be lucky to ever see daylight.
GNex was in the same type of case 99% and I don't mind the extra thickness. The guy I sold it to today probably didn't mind that it was flawless :good:
i went with a case because of drops and the size of the phone. I like the dove bar soap metaphor because thats exactly what its like for me. The phone was always falling out of my hand so i went with a little bit bulkier of a case. I also can't run naked (without beer obviously). I don't drop my phone often, but it is inevitable. When people say just don't drop it, run it naked, for me its like, who intentionally drops their phone. I am not careless but with how often i handle the phone in a day, its going to get dropped at some point over a week. And what happens when that drunk girl gets mad at me late at night because im not paying attention to her, she grabs that phone im playing with and chucks that thing. Don't no body can protect against that. I guess I could get rid of drunk girls, but weighing my options, I'll just strap a case on my phone...
I absolutely love the feel of this phone naked and I really don't like the extra bulk of a case. But despite that the only reason I have this phone is because I cracked my Nexus 4 without a case on and rendered it unusable. So yeah I use a case and just try my best to ignore how much worse it feels.

i tend to run a case if i buy the phone new. and if i buy them used i dont. dont know why.
im using the incipio ngp case (i also have the griffin reveal, but i dont like it as much... the plastic feels weird on back).
i am somewhat of a klutz and i noticed i've knocked my phone off things a lot (like elliptical machines, desk at work, nightstand etc) so want to protect this guy this time haha.
I'm a firefighter/EMT and I use mine alot at work. I always use the ballistic or otter box, have ballistic now.

I run it naked.
The phone too
Tried it with an Incipio feather, but the extra bulk felt too awkward.
depends...if I work from home, then bumper only; if outside, snap case from m site. i took some shots, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507719
I never use a case.
Just order a Dbrand skin and a simple bumper so it doesn't slip away from my hands.

Anybody have a customized X from Moto-maker? Would seem like a shame to cover up. I usually apply a clear skin (like a full body screen protector), but I have a feeling it won't look so good w/ the soft touch back. Wonder what others are doing to protect the custom versions.
hate to ask about bad experiences...but I'm considering this phone and wondering if any of you have dropped yours on a hard surface "naked" and been OK. I hate cases and I have dropped my current phone a few times on tile, even concrete, and survived alright. wondering if the X would last as well.
I run neked... I love the shape of the phone and it would be a shame to hide my custom moto x. I do have an extreme guard body wrap, just to add a little protection.
This is the first phone I ever felt comfortable running naked... The few times I ran my sgs3 alabuff, it would slip out of my hands. I don't think this phone has even come close to falling, it just sits so nicely in my hands.
AT&T Moto X rocking 4.4

Going "caseless"

And ditching the pocket protector thing. I had it wrapped in protector before I could use it. just took it off now, got a raw moto x feels nice.I take care of phones regardless of my work field and my recreational habits. If you're on the fence about it just go naked. This phones ergonomics are way too good plus its got rubber back yeaa:thumbup:
I can't do it. I have a DE and I would hate to ruin that logo. That said: I don't see what's stopping me from just putting tape over it and rolling through asphalt.
True. what's a DE?
The bezel on this phone is ultra prone to scratches. Look at it u dear light with good vision and I'm sure you will find fine marks all over the bezel. The back as well is very easily marred. I'm on moto x no 4 and while I like the overall quality, it may be hard to truly break, but it's not hard to mar/scratch.

Developer Edition. As for me, I have a bumper case and a MIME screen protector for now. I didn't want a lot of bulk and to show off my Moto X's bamboo back.
Ye I getcha I love this phone e so much I'll just get another one next year if it runs down. scratches are normal whatever, even a occasional nic or scrape. only thing I have been noticing is that the sides of it get fine hairline cracks in it. I know I'm not alone there is a thread going on about it. Dingy care for that but just don't want the back to fall off:thumbdown:

I agree with caseless for asthetics BUT....... gotta protect the phone. I usually own a case and just use it when I feel like I need to be careful.
I will get a real wood back and tempered glass screen protector, that'll be as close to going bare as I'm willing too. I'm very picky about scratches.

I have never really seen the point of a case. Sure I want to protect my phone and sure I want it to look nice, but I am going to replace it in 12-18 months anyway. Its not a long term investment or anything...and as for resale, if I lose $30 at the time of resale because of the condition, I can know that I did not spend a penny on a case and enjoyed my phone while I had it.
People are casing phones up like they are an expensive watch or something...its a replaceable item. IMO.

I have to second this. As much as I love my Moto X, it has picked up several nicks around the edge from slight bumps that never should have left a dent. I'm truly surprised the bezel is so soft and scratch-prone compared to other phones I've owned.
The Moto X is truly awesome without a case. Probably the only phone out there that was actually designed to be nice to hold.
And of course, a week after I stopped using a case, I dropped the phone and now have a big gouge in the bezel. The front bezel is soft as butter FYI.
Hey $30 bucks is $30 bucks
I've found that having used cases and screen savers on my phones i do get a better price for my devices. So the $30 bucks i spend on a case and screen saver pays for itself each time.
my phone spends a lot of time in a backpack pocket along with keys, change that have reeked havoc on previous phone screens. I also like the anonymity of having a case and screen saver on it. My phone never gets a 2nd look...
been going without a case since I got the phone 3.5 months ago. seems to hold up pretty well except for the front bezel. I am really careful about keeping the phone in a pocket thats clean (sand-less) and I have never dropped it. Still the plastic part of the front bezel is really soft and has several scratches in it even after being so careful.
I ha e a nic in the bezel as well dropped it onto tile from the vanity. As well as a little scrape from the asphalt when I was skating with it in my hand.

I get what you mean and I would like to agree except my nexus 4 took a nasty drop 2 days after i got it and the screen cracked and broke the digitizer, cost me $140 to repair. With a TPU case the chances of that happening are significantly lessened, after that I always use a case( even though I LOVE the moto x without the case) Maybe if you're very careful you'll be fine.
But whether the added bulk is worth the protection or the naked feeling is worth the risk is up to you.
Until phones have steel frame and sapphire glass, I will continue to use some form of protection. If not case then screen protector. I am not risking cracking my screen.

Depends on how much the resale value increases based on condition. If it's just that difference of $30, then I'd rather go without a case and enjoy the feel of the device since you'd come out with the same net gain.
I used to be OCD and try to keep my devices in mint condition, but I realized the cost and stress of that wasn't really worth the extra resale value. Plus, a mint phone is actually sometimes harder to sell, since many people are ok with spending a little less and getting one in good used condition. The phones I've sold with misc scratches and dents that were listed under the average going rate have always sold faster than mint ones I was asking top dollar for.
This thread made me do a thorough check of my phone and not a single scratch on it anywhere. I have gone naked since the day I got it in September.
Bare back.
All wood, no rubber.
Get your mind out of the gutter. I am saying my preference is a walnut back and no rubber case for the Moto X

The one Motorola Atrix2 I bought 2.5 years back is refusing to get retired and not allowing me to upgrade, its still like 2-3 months old phone despite of many a times drops
I don't say every Motorola is built like a brick, but majority of them are solidly built.

Again? Sounds to me like you need to learn to take better care of your phones. Glass is glass, and will crack if it gets dropped, regardless of the phone it's on. It all depends on where the phone hits when it falls. I've only ever dropped two phones without a case on, the Galaxy S4 Active and the Moto X. The X took a much harder fall and all that happened was a couple scratches on the metal. The S4 however, got a crack in the screen. The moral of this story? Stop dropping your phones and you wont have to worry about the screen cracking.

Glass is glass and will break, but this phone has the glass up front above the bezel and it will always take the brunt of the fall if it falls on the side, corner, front you are screwed. I dropped mine of the couch (about 18 inches) an smashed the whole screen. My M8 has taken that fall of the couch cushion dozens of times without a scratch. This phone is very delicate for falls! get motocare! or get a really good case (which defeats the whole point of a customized phone)
The thin bezel on the sides don't help. They look great but without a thicker bezel like most phones have, there is less material to absorb shock which can make the Moto X screen a bit more susceptible to cracking or even shattering. I have never dropped any cell phone I have owned but I still have a case on this guy. Oh....and don't get me wrong....I love the thin bezel on the sides of the screen.
Finally could manage to drop it from standing position and surprisingly the glass remained intact :good:
Though there are very very minute dents on the aluminium frame, two on right side corners and a very tinny one on the center edge. But they are visible only when observed closely. Thankfully not showing up from normal viewing distance.
I used to be very scared about the glass due to its exposed kind of design unlike other Motorola devices I have used where glass is usually tucked inside the framing. But the Moto X 2 also came out safely from the accident despite of 'risky' looking design.
Hope this remains same and never gets damaged till I keep it, though no intention of dropping it again.
I've dropped mine from decent heights many times and I haven't even seen a scratch. Quite surprised how good it has held up. I usually don't drop my phones but the wood back is sooo slippery.
Watch this crazy wreck test, though screen was already shattered:

Fragile Screen, Don't buy Moto X 2014

Hello XDA member and potential Moto X 2014 buyers,
I would suggest you to refrain from buying this device as it is the most fragile smartphone you can think of and they also do not provide proper support. I bought the smartphone a few weeks ago and by mistake it fell from just a one feet and the screen has shattered into piece. Now I totally regret Buying the phone, instead if you can get your hands on HTC One M8 or One PlusOne
Don't buy a Ferrari, the carbon fiber body panels crack very easily when you drive into a pole. And the dealership won't cover the damages if you run into said pole.
You should buy a pickup truck instead. It'll be a bandage for stupid.

Very informative post lol.. YOU drop your phone and are mad they won't give you another 1..side note I think their customer service is top notch..I received my cyber Monday deal moto x yesterday and it has a small "spider web" crack on the back.. Called them and a replacement is already on the way..this is the 3rd time I've had to deal with their support.. Every time I've walked away happy
My screen cracked with a trivial fall. I had purchased Moto Care accident protection. Replaced phone w/ no questions asked.

Glass breaks!!! Put a case on the phone or don't drop it. Seems pretty simple to me.
Mine fell from my pocket at around 40cm on the bathroom floor when i was taken a dumb but it didn't crack

Question to Moto X owners - experience with wooden back

Hi all,
I sticked to the Sony Xperia Z line the last years and now time has come for a new mobile. To cut things short - the coming Moto X Style is definitely on my radar now. I love the possibility to customize its looks, and here comes my question to all Moto X users that have opted for a wooden back cover: What are your experiences in terms of durability and looks after some months of use? Would you go for the wooden finish again? I am a bit scared that the wooden back will look cool in the beginning and soon wear off and lose its charme...
Moto reps said during the launch event, that the 2015 backing will be better than the older models and more durable.
Does this imply there have been issues/complaints about the previous models?

I've had the 2013 Moto X with the Bamboo back for about 1.5 years and it has been great. It's not too slippery and I've had no issues with discoloration or durability. The 2013 Moto X had four wood options: Bamboo, Walnut Finish, Ebony Finish, and maybe Teak finish or something. I don't remember the last one. The Bamboo back was real bamboo and didn't have any issues, but the "finishes" were not particularly durable and would peel away from the backing. I don't know if they were real wood or just a laminate made to look and feel like wood, but they were not great quality. I think you can feel confident getting a wood back as long as you know it's real wood and not some cheap imitation. My guess is that after the negative feedback, they will use real wood for all of the backs, but I don't know. I personally am going for leather this time around, but just to see how it is, not out of disappointment with my wood back.

speaking as a guy that works doing phone repairs i boubt it will not be changeable but motorola phones are always very difficult to work on. i do not expect it to be possible without significant experience. i just had to change a battery on an older x today and it was hell separating the back. and these things tend to be harder not easier on newer models https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Motorola+Moto+X+Back+Cover+Replacement/16971
