[Q] Help rooting Pumpkin Quad-core Android 4.4 Kitkat Car Stereo - Android Head-Units

I just bought an Android head unit from Pumpkin Audio http://www.autopumpkin.com/new-products/pumpkin-quad-core-android-4-4-kitkat-car-stereo-double-din-6-2-inch-in-dash-gps-navigation-system-support-3g-wifi-odb2-dvr-air-play-7-color-button-indicator.html
Everything's working fine for the most part but I want to root it to fix a few minor inconveniences. Pretty much the same issues most people have around here(connect to my OBD2 bluetooth device, map steering wheel buttons for 3rd party applications, etc) but I can't find any information on how to root it or even any ROMs for this head unit or it's CPU.
Does anybody know If/how I can root this or even install a new ROM (I don't mind either one)?
Thinks in advance.

You will want to start by reading this thread, paying attention to the details on the first post.

You can install any of the pre-rooted ROMs that match up to your CPU(RK3188) and screen resolution(800x480).

Thanks for your reply. I had seen that thread before but didn't see any ROMs for RK3188. There are some in the repos mentioned there but the rooted ones are either for RK3066 or just don't say which CPU they're for. The closest I've found is on the list of Boo's ROMs on the Custom section of the Google Drive repo which says it's KK4.4.4 and rooted but it doesn't say if it's for RK3066 or RK3188. Am I missing something?
Also, I don't know yet if my unit is KGL, Klyde, RoadMaster, GS, JY or MD yet. For what I gather from your post, I can install any ROM as long as it's for the right CPU so, Assuming Boo's ROMs are for RK3188, I don't need to bother checking which kind of unit I have, am I right?

Make sure you match up your CPU(RK3188) and screen resolution(800x480) and you will be fine!

Same for me with the GF. I'll try Malaysk's ROM tomorrow and see how it goes.

the KD-C0410 model uses a DUAL CORE Processor RK3066, you can't use RK3188 ROM's, the RK3188 is a QUAD CORE processor.
in this thread you can find all the development for the RK3066 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2660662
also remember that most of Pumpkin stereos are made by KLYDE, so you will not find the name Pumpkin look by KLD

That's exactly what I ended up doing. Malaysk's ROM has been working fine so far since I flashed it on saturday and I was able to change/fix everything I needed.

thanks!

Do any of you know if the ram can be upgraded in these Chinese head units? I know inside the Joying head unit there is what looks like a ddr3 ram slow. I am unsure if the Pumpkin variant has one as well.
If it does, in theory it should be able to be upgraded.
I asked the Pumpkin Auto people if this was possible and they said no. I am thinking they may have said this cause the want the buyer to buy the ram from them instead of using a 3rd party stick of ram.
Anyone care to weigh in on this?

please delete, sorry

Head unit recommendations/comparison?

Maybe you guys can help me out, as I am not new to android but I am new to the idea of android head units. I've done some research but what I'm finding is somewhat limited and I have no hands on experience with any units out there.
I'm looking into purchasing a head unit for my vehicle and am wondering which unit fits my needs best. I'd like something with a 7" touch screen, ability to retain steering wheel controls, backup camera, A/V in and out, support both wifi and bluetooth, and a remote signal out for an aftermarket amplifier. I'd really like to have one with the newest OS available, which to my knowledge points me in the direction of the Ownice C500... Being able to root would definitely be a plus.
I'll continue my research but wanted to reach out here for input as well, thanks!
really leaning towards this unit:
http://www.ownice.com/Pro_Auto DVD GPS Navigation for 2din Universal_405.html
I'm also kind of curious on real performance of these units, as I'm aware an advertised processor speed is not a tell-tale sign of how it will perform, and at this point that is just about all I have to go from.
@bill12690 What did you end up getting?
I ended up getting one of the 7" octacore X-Trons units

Octa core is great feature. Does it allow you to use steering wheel buttons? Is it 'learning type' SWC?
Also got a xtrons octacore unit and really really like it, I have a BMW so the canbus automatically sends steering wheel controls to the unit. So not sure about your specific car

Trying to find what is head unit type and how to update it

I've bought an Android audio system form AVIAN for my car and it stopped working, the company replace it with another head unit (it might be PX5-W211 but I'm not sure) without any documentation at all (not even in theirs sight). I don't have any information about the head unit and the company don't answer my mails. I've asked in Mercedes forum and some one suggest i can use Malaysk ROMs Lollipop 5.1.1. Does anyone have an idea how can I find the hardware type and what ROM version?
1. The AVIAN support said: "We can replace the unit with our new Android 511 Quad core unit for you. This is newer hardware and software. https://avinusa.com/mercedes-benz-e-...w211-w219.html".
2. in the link you can see its Model: PX5-W211 (Android 6.0 Marshmallow GPS Navigation System Octa core CPU (8Core) 2GB RAM memory 32GB internal storage)
3. In the system print screen appears:
"MCU version MTCD_LM_V2.22_1" (from Feb 21 2017)
Android version 5.1.1
Kernel version 3.0.101
What I'd like to have is:
-A good CD player, what i have now is a crappy application, all you can do is: Enter/Exit folder, play/stop, forward and backward. I couldn't find a way to display the tracks names and move to a selected track (when you have 50+ folders and sub folders its a must)
-Enable other android program can access the CD
-BT Tethering.
-Reconfigure some of the hard buttons
Thanks in advance, Haim.

The new one appears to be a MTCD PX5 system, which is a nice unit and well supported with Malaysk ROMs and other cool tweaks and apps. I just got one for myself and I am very happy with it. These fora have a whole section on MTCD units. Just to make sure, what does Droid Hardware Info say about the CPU?

Don't hold you breath, most (all?) MCU apps on these units tend to be sub-par. I am not aware of any nicer replacement app for CD playback, with the reservation that I do not use CDs so I have tried nothing of sorts myself.

As far as I know this is impossible. The CD is managed by the MCU rather than the OS.

Not possible (as far as I know). Once more, the BT module is managed by the MCU rather than the OS. It might be possible to use an external (USB) BT dongle; I have seen reports of this working (but I forgot where...).

That should be possible in Malaysk ROMs as well as with third-party apps such as MtcdTools.
Thank you very much sbruda.
I've attached the pictures from Droid Hardware Info
You said "The new one appears to be a MTCD PX5 system", do you mean the system called PX5-W211?
Should I use a special Malaysk ROMs for my radio? (Because it should support Mercedes W211 CAN Bus communication.)
Thanks again

Sorry, I got a bit confused by which is one system and which is the other. So:
The one that says "MCU version MTCD_LM_V2.22_1" is an MTCD system, which is great. I am assuming that this is your current system on which you just ran Droid Hardware Info. If so, then the system is an RK3188 rather than PX5 system. It is still well supported by the community. The CPU is a bit slow by today's standards but it may serve your needs (depending on what you plan to do with it). Heck, I have right now in my car an RK3066-based unit (even older and even slower) and it works very well (navigation + Torque + media).
PX5 (aka RK3368) is the latest and greatest from Rockchip and by the name and specs I infer that this is inside the PX5-W211 you mention. I have no way of knowing whether it is still an MTCD unit or something else, so if you are contemplating it you should ask AVIN directly. The PX5 unit is more competent and up to date.
If I were you, I would go like this: If the vendor will replace the current unit with the PX5-W211 free of charge (or at a charge you don't mind) and if said PX5-W211 is also an MTCD unit then I will definitely go for that; I have nothing to loose. If on the other hand the PX5-W211 is not desirable (not an MTCD and/or costs too much money) then I will give the current unit a spin with the Malaysk ROM before exchanging it and see if that satisfies my needs.
Why do I keep mentioning MTCD you ask? Because this MTCD (and MTCB) units have by far the best community support. I would personally not purchase anything else (I tried not long ago and it was not a good experience). Community support is very important because most of the time this is all the support you will ever get; indeed, most vendors are clueless and will provide no support for the OS. In addition, there are several extra things that have been implemented by the community but not by the stock OS provided by the vendor. Mapping buttons to custom actions (which you mentioned in your first post) is one of them.

You should definitely give it a try. I cannot guarantee but I am pretty sure that you will be pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately I cannot vouch for CAN bus integration (as I never used it) but again I am pretty sure that this will work at least as well as in the original OS.
Thank you sbruda.
I don't think I'm going to upgrade the FW, I have had it with AVIAN crap. I''ll keep it as it now until i got system.
Thanks for the help anyway.

New E-Tong unit released. Identify hardware?

A new unit was just released for the 2004-2008 Acura TSX, which is a first as removal of the stock radio removes the dual zone climate controls as well. This is an awesome surprise for the TSX community, as before we were stuck with a god awful replacement for the stock CC system if we wanted to use a double din.
Anyhow, I've reached out to E-Tong and a representative sent me some images of the About Device screen. I was hoping the community here might shed some information based on what little info I have.
This is the unit in particular:

Now I'm assuming this has an Intel Sofia 3GR, particularly the Atom x3-C3200RK, as no 3G connectivity is listed for the unit outside of "support 3G dongle". I'm basing this on the Mali-450, lack of native 3G support, and 3200 in "Machine Code Response". Other than that, I'm guessing.
Assuming I'm correct, would the Sofia 3GR with 1GB RAM on 6.0 be adequate for Pandora/Spotify and Waze? I have no real other desired usage outside of that and rare bluetooth calls, with maybe the exception of playing some movie files for my kids on long road trips via a USB drive.
If so, anything to be aware of up front? I'm assuming I should be prepared to remove the unit cover and add a heatsink and fan assembly to the SoC package already. Suggested mods or tweaks?
Any and all information appreciated. I'll be relaying this information to my TSX forums as well. Thanks everyone!
Anyone have any insight?
Hey there, i just bought a radio from aliexpress for my 2003-2007 honda accord and all my info lines up with yours. I was wondering if you found out any information on it? Do you know the firmware to use to update the MCU? Thanks!
** EDIT if you care still lol
Are unit is joying software. If you look on their forum you can find a screen shot that matches ours. I ran that update and ran the root for joying devices from here and it worked great. I got viper4android installed and got some custom mods installed and it's working great.

I am thinking of buying this unit, how is it in your TSX? I currently have a non-nav TSX so I don't know if I will need to mess with the wiring harness or not.
Any help?
I have the same unit, and the clock and GPS doesn't work anymore. I wanted to reset to factory or try and upgrade it. I have it in my TSX now.
Can you advise any suggestions or recommendations?
On every start up the time goes back to 2013, 11:00pm. The only way to fix it, is go find a wifi, since GPS doesnt work.
I tried contacting XEOWYN, with no luck. I regret buying this.

Might be a long shot, but I'm having issues with my unit and would like to try and update the firmware and/or software. I'm currently on android 6.0, been seeing the newer models are on android 8.1. I tried searching through the joying forum as you suggested with no success.... Is there any possible way that you could lead me to a specific solution? Thank you for your time and good day to you.
Got the same device, but still on Android 5.
Joying firmware gets looped on MCU update, if I remove the folder with MCUs and the update binary, it stops with "OTA package and app package need to be updated at the same time"
Any advice?

I wanted to know finally if i can root and put a newer android or if I exist an update for this model, I have not found anything in the forum, thank you very much! Newbie Help! Pumpkin or Dasaita Confused

Hello Members,
I'm looking to convert my Volkswagen Stock Stereo Unit (RCD 310) to an Android HU, My Stock RCD 310 served me well without any trouble for the last 7 years, but it was a very basic stereo without any fancy techs involved in it just a CD /USB player. Hence my hunt for an upgrade began initial plan is to upgrade it to RCD 340 Series to keep the stock look and with updated features like Android Auto, Car play etc. But since they are mobile phone dependent which needs to be constantly connected to your mobile phone to access the android auto features i ruled out that upgrade and decided to try independent Android HU, After a Lot of Online search I narrowed down to 3 different Android Head units in Ali express.
1.) Pumpkin Model Name:ND0380B (Pumpkin Android 8.1 Car Multimedia Player 2 din 9" Car Radio GPS Fastboot Car Stereo No DVD Player For VW/Skoda/Golf/Volkswagen)
I liked the look of the above Model but its a Quad core processor with 2GB ram and also after having a conversation with a person who own it he was strongly against this player and its running slow and have few lags. Hence ruled out
2.) Pumpkin Model Name: AE0373B(Pumpkin 2 Din 8'' Android 8.0 Car DVD Player GPS 4G RAM Car Stereo For Volkswagen/Skoda/Golf/Polo FM Rds Radio DAB+ Headunit)
I have almost finalized the above head unit and right before placing order I bumped up into Dasaita Brand and looked into their models. Luckily I found a similar Pumpkin 9" model in Dasaita which had PX5 octacore with 4GB ram (assuming this will run faster. ) Dasaita 9" Android 8.0 Car GPS Radio Player for Seat Leon Alhambra Altea Toledo with Octa Core 4GB+32GB Auto Stereo Multimedia.
Now I'm confused which one to choose, After reading some couple of XDA threads i understood all these chinese models are similar but would like to know which one is more reliable and have a better customer support Pumpkin or Dasaita, Would love to hear from some owners who own any of these devices in this forum.
TIA
