[Q] N910F EFS messed up, lost network access help??? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, first of all.... I made a clean copy of my EFS folder before having this problem but.....using the lovely and simple commands copy and paste and now the files don't have the correct permissions and owners so nothing changes when I copy them back so my question is...
Could you guys please provide me a list with all the N910F EFS files + permissions and owners?

Yes, I tried 3 different stock roms, I also downgraded to stock kitkat and then flashed a stock lollipop rom and... same problem.

same problem here also, except, i have original imei intact and can make calls, send sms etc. flashed original firmware through odin and through kies, no luck, efs file 0mb. I have lost finger print scan and my serial number is wrong.

I had a similar problem a while back, came across this info here, the 'dev' files mentioned are for a N910G, just type 'mount' at a terminal to see which 'dev' file the efs partition mounts on. I used Method 1, but Method 2, does essentially the same thing in the end, so which ever you find easiest. Damn saved my phone, I even bought a replacement online before I found this solutionl.
Fix screwed up EFS Partition.

1. Install stock Firmware via Odin then rerun autoroot (to regain root)
2. Install TWRP via Odin, reboot to recovery.
3. Install SuperSU from external SD Card.
4. Do an "adb shell" when phone is in recovery mode to run commands via TWRP.
From the ADB shell: Reset the EFS partition with the following commands:
mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p13 (for N910G Note 4)
mkdir /efs
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p13 /efs
Do a factory reset, reboot system
Afterwards, no more boot looping, the phone successfully registered on the
mobile network, and my IMEI is there and correct. Seems like the EFS partition
can rebuild itself now I guess...
Gotta love the XDA community !!!
METHOD 2
You can also try just running Commands via TWRP before using Odin to revert to
stock, re-rooting etc..Worked for me while I was doing some restore testing with
Jovy's modded kernel ..Just trying to save you some time..
Using TWRP Terminal Command To Complete this evolution...
1. Reboot to recovery
2. Hit "Advanced" Select "Terminal Command".
3. Hit "Select" (lower right corner) to select root (/) folder.
4. keyboard will open, type in the following commands, make sure you put the
spaces and / where they need to be, it needs to look exactly as outlined.
mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p13 (for N910G Note 4)
Hit Go - The command will run.
Clear the input box, type the following command:
mkdir /efs
Hit Go - The command will run.
Clear the input box, type the following command:
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p13 /efs
Hit Go - The command will run.
You can now back out of the terminal command, and follow the rest of the
directions.

I tried that and those solutions didn't work because I'm the biggest idiot in this galaxy:laugh:, some time ago I deleted the EFS golden backup in the service menu and I think that's why it didn't rebuild after I erased the main EFS partition but the good thing is that I made a clean backup of it so I can copy the files back to the EFS folder, the thing is that I just copied and pasted them so now all files have root as the owner and I know some of them had system, radio, wifi... as owners but I can't remember which ones, I think I could fix it if I see a list with the files, permissions and owners. Thanks anyway:good::good:

Hi, I have a N910C and my IMEI got changed when i flashed offical lolipop 5.1.1, and now it wont register on any network, the IMEI isn't fake or corrupted i tried imei analyzer and it says its valid but for a 2005 Phone. I tried deleting /efs entirely/ flash diff firmwares / factory reset / clean kies install, nothing worked. my .nv_data.bak/nv_data.bak is missing. Please help

IMEI
A unique identification number programmed onto your phone. It is required in order to be correctly identified on a mobile network. Without one, you cannot make calls, send SMS or use mobile data. Important stuff.
/efs
A partition on your internal memory containing important data including the IMEI. If the data in this partition gets corrupt, you will lose your IMEI
0049*** or 0000 IMEI
A generic IMEI, meaning your real IMEI is not readable, presumably because it is corrupt but there are other reasons too.

This thread aims to give you as much basic information as possible in an attempt to prevent the 10 - 20 threads we're getting per day about this issue.
I have a 0049 or 0000 IMEI. Why?
This means your phone cannot read your IMEI. There are 2 main reasons for this.
1) /efs is corrupt.
Whenever you flash a ROM, be that a custom ROM via a custom recovery or an official ROM via Odin, you risk corrupting your /efs partition and losing your IMEI.
There are 3 main steps to take to try to resolve this
Restore your EFS from a backup - A logical first step
No backup? Reflash the latest stock ROM using Odin*
Send the device for repair**
*Ultima rom users (prior to v15), first reflash the rom, choosing a non-stock kernel during the aroma install wizard first. Boefla is a good choice to test.
** a couple with "cannot mount /efs" errors have fixed their device by flashing ics. If you know you haven't got a VTU00M eMMC firmware 0xf1 - go for it. However for those of you who don't know, this would be extremely dangerous. You could get SDS so I do not recommend this action. If you are foolish enough to try it, flash 4.1.2 immediately afterwards.
2) /efs partition format changed
A quick note before going forward... when looking at a ROM build number, the last 3 characters mean Year, Month, Revision. Let's take XXEMG4 for example. M = 2013, G = July, 4 = revision 4. See "Other" section at the end of this post for more info
From July 2013 (XXEMG4) onwards, official Samsung ROMs change the format of your EFS Directory/Partition. Let's say these ROMs change from EFS v1 to EFS v2. Only basebands from July 2013 (MG2) onwards can read EFS v2.
Quick info rules:
EFS v2 Basebands can read EFS v2 and EFS v1
EFS v1 basebands CANNOT read EFS v2, ONLY EFS v1
This means if you have flashed an official ROM (or custom ROM based on official) From July 2013 (MG* or newer), you are now in a situation whereby only an EFS v2 baseband (MG* or newer) can read the IMEI in /EFS.
If you have ever flashed XXEMG* (or newer) ROM, to keep your IMEI working, you must:
Stay with the EFS v2 basebands (MG* or newer). You may flash other ROMs but must return to the MG* (or newer) baseband
Restore your EFS backup (taken before XXEMG* or newer ROM install) to use older (EFS v1) basebands. EFS backup must be an EFSv1 backup to use an EFS v1 baseband
If the above don't work, consider sending for repair...

Please note, it is flashing the ROM that alters EFS format, not the basebands themselves. You can flash the MG* or newer basebands safely on their own and return to an older baseband without issue.

Basebands alone do not alter efs format

How do I backup and restore /efs?
There are a few methods to backup /efs, but they all require customisation of your phone. Either root access, or a custom recovery. I appreciate that many of you do not wish to root your phones and just want to flash official ROMs via Odin... Well here are your choices:
Only use OTA or KIES to update (Official Method)
Root using CF auto root / Framaroot - backup efs and THEN flash via ODIN
Flash a custom recovery via Odin, backup efs and THEN flash a ROm via Odin
Risk it. Don't backup efs. Simply flash via Odin and hope for the best
...and here are the options for backing up / restoring efs (this list is not exhaustive)
EFS Pro - App needs root
SGSIII EFS backup / Restore - app runs from Windows / Linux and needs root
kTool - app needs root.
Philz advanced CWM rewcovery - custom recovery can take efs backups using the "Custom Backup" feature.
It's worth noting that some custom ROMs will give the option to backup efs, but you can never have too many backups!
.tar and .tar.gz backups can be extracted on /sdcard and then manually used to replace the files in /efs using a root explorer or adb as a last resort. Some people have reported more success deleting the /efs folder contents before hand. This is risky though, so only those of you who can backup the /efs with Philz recovery before trying this - should try it. Why Philz recovery backup the already broken EFS? well you can restore it if the phone doesn't boot and at least you are no worse off than before attempting this method. Messing woith EFS can cause your phone to not boot up so be CAREFUL!!!
Please see below for step-by-step instructions to restore a folder dump* of EFS using adb. Do so at your own risk!!!
This is useful if you cannot boot.
*An example of a folder dump would be an efs backup created using my mg baseband pack linked earlier in this thread.
Pre requisite is having adb "installed" on yoru windows PC. Download THIS file and follow the instructions in the readme.
1) Boot into recovery, connect usb and go to "mounts and storage". Toggle the "mount efs" and "mount data" options to mount these partitions. Tip, when mounted, the option then becomes "unmount x"
2) Open "cmd" in Windows and type "adb shell" to get to your adb prompt.
3) If you don't know where your efs folder dump is, you'll need to look for it using the list command. I know mine is on internal SD but I forget the name of it... (if you already have this on a computer, skip to step 4...

5) Once confirmed you get a list similar to above (as opposed to nothing) take a screenshot of the files and remove the efs contents...

Modifying an IMEI is illegal in many countries. Even if this was possible, discussion here would be against the rules. Your IMEI must not be modified. Either restore a backup or send for repair.

Yes, factorymode is caused by corrupt efs. It is possible to fix it with root and a terminal emulator.
Firstly try these commands (case sensitive)

This should hopefully return you to user mode. If not, the last thing you can try, which reportedly works is to delete /efs/FactoryApp/ folder, then factory reset from recovery. This *should* regenerate the folder. Your factory mode will still need "echo -n ON >> /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode" doing though, which can be done as described above or opening the file in a text editor and changing the content of the file to "ON"
Failing that, flash stock and send for repair.

How does "Ariza patch" fit in to this?
Ariza patch does not fix IMEI issues. It fixes "00000" Serial number issues, which has similar symptoms. This patch does not work on EFS v2 ROMs. If you use it, you may irreparably break your phone.
Also it would seem, Phones that had this patch ON EFS v1 ROMS will break their IMEI if they upgrade to EFS v2 ROMS.
As yet, there is nothing proved to resolve this issue fully. Search the Ariza thread for posts by zuluman for potential fixes. This Page is hopefully the most useful or one of the patched modems posted
It would probably be best to get the serial number professionally restored either under warranty or by sla mobile repair shop. The Ariza patch was always only fixing something that should have been fixed under warranty anyway.... now we are seeing this issue - cut your losses
Send for repair
A couple of notes on this. Firstly, "Send for repair" does not necessarily mean you must return it to Samsung / Your carrier. It is simply a phrase. Many EFS issues can be resolved by taking it to a mobile repair shop.. In the UK, There's one on almost every street in a town / city centre, and they will charge about £20 to get it repaired. Around $25 USD / EUR. If you are out of warranty or are in a rush for the repair, this is a good option and yes, people are known to have been successful with this...
Secondly, a more personal note. If I suggest "send for repair" as a solution for you, it is not because I am unwilling to get involved in troubleshooting or helping (although this is all already covered in this post) - It is because I truly believe this is the best or only option for you. Mostly I will only recommend it if it is the only option. Seeing me say this a lot in this thread is because we need people to accept that there can only be a finite amount of approaches to fixing the issue. In some cases, I will recommend it if it is the BEST option. An example of that would be the ariza patch situation. The Change in EFS format broke all those serial number 000000 phones that were fixed with the ariza patch. It was my opinion before MG4 that serial number 000000 should have been the resolution to this issue. It still is. At the moment, there are not many options for broken ariza patched phones. My opinion is this is the order of best solutions.
1) Repair
2) Wait for ariza update
3) Try Zuluman patch.

With kernels like siyah they create 2 efs files on the Internal SD card, is it enough to copy these to drop box or something and restore only if they are ever needed?

Will my second 9300's IMEI changed into old i9300 or i9250? Or just mess it up?

Doubtful. You cannot use someone else's efs backup to restore your own.

You could potentially brick your device as is the case when flashing anything from another device onto your own, it would definitely cause problems with registering on your network.
If your network finds out as well you could also have a friendly visit from the police for cloning an IMEI. (it doesn't matter if you own the other device you are trying to change the ID of the device which is illegal.

guys i'm in trouble , i lost my imei and the classic "No service" error is haunting me,
i do have the back up efsbackup.tar.gz and efsdev-mmcblk0p3.img.gz in sdcard but how do i restore (the easiest way ? btw i have no idea by what action these backups are created , they were just there when i looked) plus, do i need to get back to stock before restore ? currently on a 4.2.2 rom . Thank you

Kobo Arc Development

So I was randomly flying around on Google today, and I noticed that someone had claimed to root the Kobo Arc, and gave written instructions here -- http : // www . mobileread . com / forums / showthread.php?p=2584491 (Remove the spaces, XDA won't let me post an actual link, since I don't have 10 posts yet). After running through this myself, I went on the Google Play store and used root checker. Much to my surprise, it worked, and my device now has root access. I even tested with Root Explorer, and mounted the system partition as R/W, and I can move things in and out of it. I'm currently working on trying to get a custom ROM working, but I'm worried that I will cause a brick, since Cyanogen doesn't support the Arc. (yet...)

i have absolutely no idea what im doing but I think I have dumped 12 partitions using

is there anyone around that fancies a challenge? im in a position where bricking this thing isn't really much of a problem so if someones up for a challenge and wants to help im willing to lend myself and the device to this

Haha. As soon as I found a thread called "root the Kobo Arc" on Google, I posted it here right away. Sorry if I deprived you of the satisfaction! *troll*
Joking aside, I'm not too sure about the bootloader. I think it's pretty locked down (since I put a nexus 7's cyanogenmod onto the data partition and rebooted. It tried to updated, but said validation failed, or something of that sort). I can't install any custom recoveries either, since I have no idea how to do it in the first place, and there's none made for the Arc.
Also, I analyzed the Arc with the "Droid Examiner" App from the play store (That is a really great app, just so you know), and found that it uses a board called "zeus". The funny thing, though, is that one of Sony's Xperia phones, also has a board called "Zeus", and there's Cyanogenmod for that (albiet not the latest version). However, these two devices have nothing in common. The closest thing to an Arc that has Cyanogenmod is the Nook HD/HD+, which uses the exact same chip (OMAP TI 4470).
If someone is smart enough (not me) to analyze the Cyanogenmod files for the Nook, and see how they work, that may lead into flashing the Arc.
Anyway, I'm resetting the Arc, since I'm having weird cases where the Arc would freeze after booting it from sleep mode, and I'd have to turn it off and on again. I think that was something else I did, since it happened before the root, but neh, I might as well try this all from factory default settings.

I've been looking at starting my own recovery mod branch but its no simple task by the looks of it, if their are similar devices we can use all their data and tweak it to ours which would help a lot!
Oh I think we have fast boot, I held vol down and pushed power on, it just sat at the kobo arc screen, I used the nexus 7 driver from the universal adb/fastboot driver I found on here and it connected up http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263822
I stumbled on some to good to be true program on Xda dev that apparently can root anything and unlock any bootloader once your in fastboot mode. I have tried that part and it said it was successful but i have no idea how to test this out yet, the program does a bunch of other stuff too, the adb stuff worked as did apk sending, and the rooting options knew i was rooted, it also has flashing functions, I'll be damed if I can find it now I'm at home though , I'll have another look.
I don't mind doing leg work but if someone can read the map it would be very helpful!

Um... Okay. I've installed the drivers (I think I installed them correctly), and I booted my device using "volume down + power". I have it connected to my System, but whenever I try to use one of the options in the Android Root Toolkit, it tells me it's waiting for the device. I don't know what I did wrong, but something's clearly not working.
As far as the recovery goes, I think that looking at the Nook Tablet from TWRP would work quite nicely. It runs on a similar processor ( I believe it's a OMAP TI 4430 ), and it seems to be quite similar in specs to the Arc. If only I was a bit better at programming...

Okay, so I can't even push apps to the Arc using ADB. I think you have to boot into recovery (power + volume up). I don't know how to use the terminal at all (I'm lost, I know D: ), so I don't have that installed on the Arc. I remember being able to do ADB even with my Sony Reader (First gen, PRST1), so I'm not sure why the Arc isn't quite working. I have both drivers installed, BTW.
As for the recovery, I can't even find a method to flash it. I'm still trying everything I can, though. :\

im not sure that's going to work you know, ive had some permission errors with adb which suggests the root isn't full, terminal on the device works fine, but adb just has some problems, adb shell and the su seems to fix them.

If you don’t already have ADB installed, check out our guide on installing ADB. Once you have ADB installed, flash the custom recovery image as follows:
WARNING: It is very important that the recovery image that you use in this method is compatible with your device. Else it will not work and flashing it could possibly brick your device.​
Download flash_image and extract it from the zip file to a location on your computer. We extracted it to the main C drive (not in any folder) and will use that in the next steps.
Copy the recovery image for your phone to a convenient location on your computer, preferably with a short path. We will be placing it on the C Drive directly (not in any folder) and using that in the next steps.
Note: The recovery image should have .img extension. If it is in a zip file, extract the .img file from it.
Enable USB debugging mode on your device from Menu > Settings > Applications > Development.
Connect your device to your computer via USB.

I've already tried that recovery method (I spent about two hours just googling), and it doesn't work with the Arc. The ADB won't let me push the image over.
As for Cyanogenmod, I tried something yesterday. A person on the Mobileread forums (apparently a Kobo employee) put out an update.zip file for the Kobo Arc. The file was quite old, and it's really just the 4.1.1 update that (I hope) we're all running. He said that as long as you put it on the root of the data partition, the Arc will flash it immediately. When I tried taking a Nexus 7's Cyanogenmod file and sticking it in the same place, the Arc started flashing it, but then just said there was an error with the update. So I personally think that you do require a properly signed ROM.
However, if you open up Kobo's update.zip using Winrar, a sidebar pops up that says "signed by SignApk". I don't know too much about this, but couldn't we use this "signapk" to sign our own ROMS and flash them?

I think there is a problem with the setup, I just flashed a CW recovery image and it worked, or didn't rather! but the concept did, transferred, flashed using adb, I had to replace it though as it was totally borked and kept restarting, apparently the touch based recovery methods can be like that, ill have some good time tomorrow night (UK time) if your about, and ill keep at it tonight if I get a chance!
copy recovery to adb location

exit adb shell and type
adb reboot recovery
fixed it by holding power button and vol down to boot to fastboot recovery
then ran
fastboot flash recovery inputrecovery.img
inputrecovery being my original recovery file taken from partition 8!
ive updated the partition map on the post above with my progress, but it looks like we can flash to them my name so its probably less relevant now
oh ive ditched the drivers I was using and reinstalled the drivers from the official SDK, generic android adb for within android and android bootloader for fastboot

Yaaas!! recovery replaced
ok, deleting or renaming /etc/install-recover.sh appears to have stopped custom recovery being changed back to stock after reboot, I used the recovery builder to make a build from partition 8, which it did without error, flashed using the above commands.​
Still don't know what im doing though, but progress is progress ​
ill post a link to the custom recovery ive made soon, we need to make up some fstab file listing all the mounts etc, i tried one but it must be borked as recovery couldnt see anything​

I have made a stable and thus far, a working custom recovery.
its mounting everything and backing up / restoring works as it should, unless anyone can find any issues I consider this step in building a complete ROM completed,
you must have root, download arctic.apk and install on your tablet, you will need to enable unknown sources In dev options first
you must have android and java sdk also installed, you will need to add the google usb drivers in the android sdk, you will find them in the "extras"
Enable usb debug on the arc and install the generic google adb usb drivers
Delete or rename /etc/install-recover.sh this will make the custom recovery persistent
Copy the recovery.img to the SDCard, either by using drag and drop in windows ( to root of "internal storage") or by adb push, if you use adb push then remember to copy recovery.img to the same folder as adb
adb push recovery.img /sdcard/
The next job is to open up a command window and navigate to adb folder, type the following exactly, even better copy and paste them!
adb shell
su
cat /sdcard/recovery.img > /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/recovery
exit adb shell (ctrl+C) and type
adb reboot recovery
and bobs your uncle, one happy new recovery

that's the easy bit, I have a feeling I need to make a couple of changes to the recovery.img but noting major, just a couple of other mounts I may have missed

im just trying to build a development platform, I have a loathing for Linux as a desktop so will need to re educate myself without throwing my laptop out of the window, after that "challenge" the ROM should be easy
Well, I've just done it, and it works. Everything seems to be in order for the time being. I'm going to muck around with the new capabilities, and see what I can do.

Failed EFS restore

Ok, I'm officially in trouble. I have a SM-G900F rooted with towelroot, SuperSu and BusyBox installed. I tried flashing with Mobile Odin Pro the latest NG2 firmware to keep root and not trip Knox. It failed twice (or three times), both times I was able to restore the original firmware with desktop Odin (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/mobile-odin-pro-4-20-issues-t2834671).
Then something strange happened: I noticed that on 4G I had only data but no signal bars (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/help-4g-data-signal-bars-t2837031). Then I had problems connecting to Wifi and a message appeared telling me I am in "Factory Mode" and some things are limited.
It was clear that my EFS partition is corrupted. I installed Root Explorer and there is nothing in my EFS folder (still I can use the phone in 2G/3G/4G for data and 2G/3G for calls but no Wifi).
I have 2 backups for EFS: one is made using Samsung Tools (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/efs-samsung-tool-universal-support-t2602325) and it's an efs.img file, the other is made using some EFS backup tool and it's just a copy of exactly what was in EFS folder (a few folders and files). I tried using Samsung Tools to restore the backup but no luck. When I restart the phone, EFS folder is still empty.
I rebooted in recovery mode and it said "failed to mount /efs". That's probably why Samsung Tools can't do it's job but I'm not sure. At this moment I'm not sure of anything. I think that someone with some knowledge (knowledge that unfortunately I'm missing) can help me fix this.
I really need for some help, so any ideas are welcomed.

It's only stock recovery, no TWRP or CWM.
I didn't mount the EFS partition before because I didn't know how. I'll follow your guide and report back.
Regarding the exact copy of EFS (efs.img): It's done with Samsung Tools but never had a chance to test it, so... I don't know. But let's take it one at a time. First problem: mount efs partition.
PS: My Windows laptop is playing tricks on me so it's going to take a while to reinstall Windows, adb, etc. But I'll be back.

Ok, I installed Adb, phone is recognized.

Personally, if an EFS backup program made an image (.img} file and it was the same size as your EFS partition I'm sure that it was an exact copy and try writing it back. I checked the size of my efs.img and the size of the partition with the command you gave me. They are both 14MB but on a closer look, adb shows 14336 and Windows reports 14680kb. So I don't know....

Not found implies that the /system partition isn't mounted. But it could also be an ADB syntax quirk, path or symlink error, a typo or.. well, could be a lot of things. Perhaps try the syntax below. Or run the command from a terminal emulator instead of ADB shell.

I installed Android Terminal Emulator and Shell Terminal Emulator (PlayStore) but I got the same thing. What's strange is that in both of them when I run the command "adb devices" they both give me nothing while in adb shell on desktop I get a number (as it should).
I understand that the syntax is for a specific terminal emulator. Tell me please what is that terminal emulator (that you know syntax is correct) so I can try with that one.

This is one the apps I tried with.
I'm describing step by step what I do. What I start with: SM-G900F rooted with towelroot, stock recovery, SuperSU and BusyBox installed, Knox 0x0.
I download and install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm.
Using this app:

It doesn't work. From ADB it says "mkdir failed for /efs, File already exists".
And from terminal emulator, (with busybox) it asks for an argument (pic atached).
Is there any way of using Odin to fix this, because it seems that nothing works.

Thank's for your time. I'm flashing now the original firmware (so I can start fresh) and I'll document every step I take. I'll report back.
Ok, I tried flashing the original firmware (ANE2) and this time I can't even get pass the Samsung authentication screen (the first time you boot your phone and asks for language, Google account, etc), It asks me for the Samsung account and password that this phone was registered with) and it tries for a couple of minutes to verify the credentials (on data network) then it fails saying it is a network error.
I tried wipe cache/factory reset (from recovery) and reinstall a different firmware. Same thing. It seems now it's really messed up.
As mentioned earlier, we did not expect a firmware image to fix your EFS. And the EFS is critical to normal phone operation.
The purpose of stock firmware is so that your phone is stable, reduce variables that might interfere and facilitate fixing your EFS. So I'm not why you apparently expected it to be an outright fix in and of itself?
Having installed the stock firmware should help you achieve your remaining goals. Now you need to decide if you are going to install a custom recovery or not. A custom recovery will increment your Knox flag if it isn't already. That affects very little, but it's your decision. It may affect the private mode feature or warranty claims, however many carriers don't care about Knox and E.U. legislation bars Samsung from invalidating a warranty unless they can demonstrate that root damaged your phone.
Whether or not you install a custom recovery, you will want to try writing your 14 MB EFS backup image to your phone. I believe that you'd find it easier to do so with a custom recovery. But it can be done with a stock one too, you will just have to deal with a bit more syntax in the latter case.

I didn't expect to fix the problem, I wanted a fresh start so I can try again the adb/terminal emulator commands. But what I didn't expect was not being able to, basically, start the phone. When you first start a new phone (or after a factory reset) it asks you language, Wifi, Google account and, in my case, for a Samsung account that this phone was paired with.
If I try to connect to a Wifi network the phone reboots itself. If not, it tries via data connection. Google credentials are ok but when it tries to verify Samsung credentials it gets stuck saying that it's a network problem and it doesn't go futher. So I get stuck at this point, between booting and actually being able to use the phone. I can't install anything, I can't receive or make phone calls (like before). I can't go to USB debugging so ADB doesn't see the phone.

The only way to get your phone to work again and gain access to networks/wifi is by installing a new motherboard if you can`t restore the old EFS folder somehow.

Sorry that you found it a surprise.. but if reinstalling the stock firmware eliminated your phones problems, that would make it a solution, whereas it's a stepping stone. I did try to explain this earlier, where I told you that installing the firmware would not fix your EFS. And the EFS is essential to normal phone operation.
Regardless of the surprise, you are now on a better footing to finish fixing your phone. But for clarity, your problem started when your EFS got corrupted somehow. And your EFS needs to be restored before the problem will be resolved.
On the positive side, you appear to have a EFS backup, even if the backup app won't easily restore it to you phone. If you stick with it.. you just have some minor hurdles remaining - syntax or whatever - in getting your 14 MB EFS backup restored (written) to your EFS partition.
If you want that done painlessly, then pack a case of beer and your phone into a box and ship it to me. And I'll return it fixed. As it seems unlikely that you'd do that though.. then try to provide as much info as you can here and someone will try to help you finish fixing your phone in this thread.

2- Create a file with a name 'factorymode' on the sdcard, open it, input 'ON' and then save it. Navigate to the efs folder, create the folder with a name 'FactoryApp' (case sensitive). Finally move the file 'factorymode' you have created above to that folder. Reboot the phone to see if the problem still persists?

If you actually created the file in the manner described and it didn't succeed and barring something novel in a description of your situation the next step is probably to mount the /efs partition from recovery mode, format it, recreate the /efs folder, remount and reboot so that the efs is rebuilt. But before you do any of that, give us a better description of your situation.

Hi , i Downloaded a efs backup app and i just pressed on restore before i press on backup , after that the /efs file is empty . i tried to make ( /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode ) with this app : root browser but that didn't work...

Nothing anomalous is showing up in those details so I think we can safely assume that accidentally pressing the restore button rather than backup button simply corrupted your efs partition. All of those questions were aimed at confirming that with certainty, but I understand that this is a lot of work and frustrating for you too. So we'll proceed on that basis.
An efs.img file is an uncompressed efs backup. So try restoring that with your efs program. I have no idea if it is a valid (working) backup, but you aren't going to cause any further harm by trying to restore it. If that works, great and you're done. If not, then we'll go on to rebuild your efs instead.
To rebuild your efs partition we need a custom recovery. So a few last questions.
You are rooted, correct?
Did you use Towel root or CF-autoroot? (I am trying to discern if you have super su /busybox installed)
Are you able to boot to recovery mode (home + power up + power)?
Do you have a custom recovery installed e.g. TWRP or CWM?
If you can answer yes to all four questions, then go ahead and run the following efs repair script. If not, then you'll need to install a custom recovery first. If you're already rooted but don't have TWRP, then it's just a matter of flashing TWRP with Odin from download mode.
In any event, once you have a custom recovery in place you can run this recovery script.
Download the script here. Copy it to your external SD card. Then boot to recovery mode and install the flashable zip file "Brick_Loop_FIX_afterRestoringBackup.zip" that you copied to your Ext SD card.
Then reboot. If you still have any issues, reboot a second time, then let us know if your phone is working properly again.

As an aside, there is a minor mystery there. This comes from a Note 3 thread so when I went to modify it to work with your S5, I found that it was already set up for the S5 rather than the Note 3.. so why it is that way in a Note 3 thread is a mystery. Go figure. But I did check and you can use it the way it is.

Disconnect the USB cable and remove your battery from your phone for ten seconds. Then replace the battery.
Now press and keep holding the home button. Then press and hold the volume down button as well, then lastly the power button. Keep holding all three until the phone starts (about ten seconds).
Let me know if you do or don't get to the download mode screen when you do that.
If you don't, try it a second time, just in case you weren't continously holding all three keys to get into download mode.
If you still don't, then we want to ensure that the Kies program is not running (if you have Kies on your computer). Then try going to download mode again in the same manner as above, then plug the phone into your computer with the USB cable and start the Odin 3.09 program and tell me what you see on the Odin screen.

Just purchaced a Note 3 verizon, Pls suggest best practices to Root & unlock

I just purchased a Note 3 verizon I believe 900v on swappa It will arive in the next few day's and I want to get all my ducks in a row by that I mean aquire all the root and unlocking tools nessary for a best practices root and if nessary unlocking of my boot loader.
Goals for root are mostly to debloat the phone and hotspot mod's for no hassle teathering.
I may dip my toes into custom rom for this phone but mostly I am just looking for a clean lean experiance for my note 3. I have been pouring over the many many pages of the various rooting guids and I am just not sure witch method to use is the safest / most reliable .

Odin3 v3.12.3 : flash tool is this latest ? best to use ?
Samsung usb drivers v1.5.45.0 : are these the proper drivers to install ?
You should start by figuring out which firmware release it has on it.
If it has PL1 (the newest security release, circa 2017/01/15), there will be no rooting for you... unless you manage to create a new exploit.
OB6 and OF1 - (one of) the yemen tool(s)**
NK1 - no root available ( and can't be rolled backwards w/ Odin, only NK1 or higher )
NJ6 - no root available? ( Try towelroot, or you can downgrade to NC4 using Odin )
MI9/MJ7/MJE/NC2(leak)/NC4 - Towelroot v3
For which bootloader unlock binary to use, see here.
Can't help you out with USB drivers, I don't remember what I used. afaik, they will either work 100% or not work at all, so you just need to get something working.
I've never used anything but Odin 3.0.9. Can't tell you if the version you mention is "better".

Your right, after thinking about my post I realized there were 2 many variables that I need to know before I ask for help. So once I recieve the phone and if it's fully functional I will find out what firmware it has and what the cid it has and will post a follow up if I need help.

I got my note 3 and boy is it just a wonderful device. SM-900v running OF1 firmware, and My Cid is 15 so is all good.
procedurs completed.
I got root from useing the yemem tool.
and have tryed some debloating removed the NFL apk as a test with Tit.backup.
dissabled ota updates, I made a copy of the update.zip (that was downloaded with out me asking it too. I assume that this update.zip is the new PL4 firmware )and deleted it. renamed the fota.apk's with a .bak
not really sure if I should unlock the the bootloader I would love to have twerp.
Could anyone point me at a good debloating script ?

There is a small permanent downside to unlocking - the blowing of the Knox Warranty Flag means that you will never be able to use Knox Secure containers, even if you did a full stock flash with Odin. Not sure how important this is to folks using the phone as a personal device (as opposed to a corporate device).
Operating with a rooted-stock device with a locked bootloader usually progresses through a customary arc - especially with new rooters, but also with experienced folks - where the user one day does some incremental mod that boot-loops the Android UI. At that point there is no means to reverse the small change. (You can't get in via "adb" as it's daemon isn't started yet, and even if it were, the fact that it is in secure mode means that you would have to have a stable UI in order to confirm the connection.) As there is no rooted secondary boot available (i.e., a custom recovery), there is no way to perform repairs, and a trip back to Odin is in store for the owner. Worse yet, a backup has never been made... so all customizations are all lost and must be re-created completely from scratch.
** this is a good idea if you unlock and install a custom recovery: (although TWRP may detect it and emasculate it automatically)

Well I decided in for a penney in for a pound and have sucessfully unlocked my boot loader, had no issues.
my question now is how do I install twerp I have downloaded
twerp-3.0.2-0-hltevzw-4.4
and twerp 3.0.2-1-hlte.img.tar
I think I need to install the tar file.
but I don't know how. I have odin but not sure if that is the right program to use. I think I read where somone installed twerp with flashify or somthing like that.
What should I do ?

man up and use a root prompt command line. It's a single command.

( assuming that you put the twrp .img file in the /sdcard folder. If it was in the download folder, then if=/sdcard/Download/twrp-3.0.2-0-hltevzw-4.4.img )
Note there are absolutely, positively no spaces anywhere in "mmcblk0p15". Critically important.
The above command writes a raw binary data (the .img file) to the 15th partition of the mmcblk0 device - the flash memory chip. You can do this with boot images (such as custom recoveries) or a few other binary images, but typically not with ext4 or other filesystems.
Note this command could be extremely dangerous if you made a mistake. If you were to write data someplace else it could be a permanent disaster. So cut-n-paste to be safest (without a new-line), and then double- and triple- check the command for typos before you hit the enter key.
FYI, you can see what the partition mapping is by doing a folder listing

The partitioning scheme varies from android device to android device; but on the SM-N900V the recovery partition is the 15th partition. (On other devices it might be something different).

That works.
Or a terminal emulator.
All you need is to put the file on your (internal, pseudo-) /sdcard, "su", and "dd".
For extra credit, make sure to compute a file checksum (e.g. "md5sum") every time you copy the original .img file to a new location and especially prior to flashing. That safeguards against a bad copy operation, crappy flash memory, etc.
Stock ROMs might not have a "md5sum" binary in /system/bin, but since you are rooted you could install a private busybox in someplace like /data/local/bin. I prefer to use a busybox which is SELinux-cognizant, e.g. v1.23.1 here as busybox_full_selinux_1.23.1.zip Note that I don't "install" this .zip so that stuff in /system/bin or /system/xbin get overwritten, but instead just keep it in a private area all on it's own.
Steps.
0) extract the "busybox" binary from the .zip file and get a copy to your SD card. Then

I am now have root, unlocked bootloader and twrp Whoot!!
Well I now have twrp installed thank you vary much for all your help and direction I sincerly appreciate your assistance.
I installed termux and after updating the packages sucessfully used dd to install twrp.
1st thing I am going to do a full system backup.
No developer love for N900V not good
