Lollipop - cannot write to external SD card in spite of granting permission [SOLVED] - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This new permissions policy for apps writing to the external SD card is doing my head in. I have the stock, rooted, Polish Lollipop 5.0 ROM on my N9005. Dropbox refuses to write to the SD card and gives me a storage full or unavailable error. I'm well aware of how to set permissions for each app that requests it but Dropbox doesn't even ask for permission! Dropsync is even worse, it asks for permission to write to the SD card and I grant it and is displays a message saying that all is OK but when I try to sync I get a storage unavailable error. Similarly, Dolphin browser refuses to save anything to the SD card and doesn't request permission. I've reformatted my SD card using Android, tried a different SD card, cleared the cache for the affected apps, signed in & out of Dropbox but with no success. I don't think the SD card fix apps for Kitkat will work for Lollipop. Can anyone solve this?
Thanks

I emailed dropbox support & they have the answer:
Thanks for writing in, I will be happy to help you with your file issue.
It appears that these duplicate documents were added from the "Samsung Device" app. Samsung created a new deep Dropbox integration for their devices that allows access to all documents in your Dropbox account from a special "DocumentSync" folder on your phone. This DocumentSync feature allows you to add, edit, and delete any files that appear in this folder and these modifications will show up both on your phone and in Dropbox.
We've worked with Samsung on a fix for this duplicate file problem and it should be released sometime soon. In the meantime, if files are still being replicated, you can temporarily disable DocumentSync until the fix is released.
DocumentSync is different from the Dropbox application on your phone and disabling the DocumentSync feature will not impact the Dropbox app. You can turn off DocumentSync on your phone by following these instructions:
1. Tap your device’s “Menu” button
2. Tap “Settings”
3. Tap “Cloud”
4. Tap “Documents” or “DocumentSync”
5. Toggle off
You can also disable this app from the Dropbox website. To do this:
1. Log in to https://www.dropbox.com/account#security
2. Under "Apps linked" find the Samsung Device app.
3. Click the small "x" at the far right of where it says Samsung Device.
Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused, but I hope this helps! Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions.
Regards,
Randy
I think the way ahead is to uninstall the Samsung Dropbox app with Titanium Backup but when I do this it keeps coming back. How would I go about hacking it out with Root Explorer?

How To Fix KitKat SD Card Write Restriction

In the last few days Samsung has been pushing out Android 4.4.2 to flagship devices like the Galaxy
Note III and Galaxy S4. Unfortunately, Google implemented an SD card write restriction in the latest
Android version which can be quite annoying for users with an SD card in their phone.
The new “feature” basically restricts apps from writing to external SD cards. This can be quite
annoying, because many users want to store apps on a secondary SD card instead of the main storage
unit.
Luckily, how to fixing this problem can be easily done if you have root access. Here’s how you can do it
(Please be aware that you’re performing these changes on your own risk!):
Make sure that you have root access
1. Perform a NANDROID backup to be completely safe
2. Use a root-enabled file manager and navigate to /system/etc/permissions
3. Edit platform.xml and find “WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE“
4. Add an additional group definition for this permission: <group gid=”media_rw” />
5. Save the changes and restart your device
6. You are now able to write on your external SD card again
I hope that I was able to help you.

This does not work for Sygic. My rom comes with this setting already applied, and yet Sygic gives me
Code:
SD Card access denied
Work!!!
Thank you very much!!!
Your strategy work fine on my Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.
You can also install "Kitkat SDcard full access" it's an xposed module
It works on my Samsung Galaxy S4 mini but only for a limited time after restart the phone. I have last nighty of CM11. It seems like something check permissions and change it back. But everything is on the place. Permission hasn't changed. When I open Folder mount application the message "write permission is not set correctly" occurred but media_rw group is still in system/etc/permission file. I've tried to install CM12 but the problem is there too. Kitkat SDcard full access module from xposed hasn't solved the writing issue for me. It works but after sometime doesn't.

[Q] View the root system files on NST?

I've rooted my NST using NookManager 0.5.0 and also installed the same version of NTGAppsAttack. I am extremely new to all of this.
Basically, before installing the AppsAttack (I think it was this install that triggered my problem), I was able to view the entire root directory of my Nook, (/system, etc) but now all I can view is /sdcard. Even when I remove the SD card, I still can't go up another level. How do I get back to be able to view all the root directories on my nook?
Thank you and sorry in advance if this is a stupid question - my searches proved fruitless
Edit: Also, while I'm on here (and this could be a related problem), when I plug my NST into my laptop via USB, I can't see the Nook. The NST is charging successfully, but I want to be able to see my NST's file structure.
If all you've done is root with NM and install the Google apps I don't know how you could have been able to see the entire root file structure when connected via USB (is that what you meant?).
The drivers installed when you connect your NST to your computer don't provide for this kind of file view, only for storage, both internal and external (i.e., the two sdcards). You would typically have to install an app (like Root Browser or Root Explorer) in order to examine the system structure.
So.....?

You don't mention how you're trying to access the root directory. If you're using ReLaunch that was installed with NookManager, to change the launchers behavior from the home screen click on the gear in the upper right corner, this enters you into the settings menu, click on advanced settings, general settings, make sure that the don't leave start directory item is unchecked, go back and under file manager settings check show hidden files and uncheck hide known extensions. Back out again and in the main advanced settings menu scroll down and click on the save settings and restart item. You should be able to view anything on internal and external storage. As for Windows , unfortunately without 3rd party software it will only display the first partition on any external device.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I can't view ANY file system, nothing, when I connect my Nook to my laptop (Windows).
As for viewing my root file system on the Nook, it is via ReLaunch and when I reset the settings I was able to view it.
Have you tried a reboot?
The Nook usually has two UMS (USB Mass Storage) volumes showing.
They will show up in Windows on the task bar as two drive letters (I: & J: or whatever).
Whether those drive letters have anything backing them is another question.
I disabled that junk on my Nooks a long time ago.
Some of the problems are that it restricts you to FAT volumes and delegating volumes is a bad idea anyway.
To "see" files you need a file explorer app or UMS or just use ADB.

[Q] Apps Crashing on startup after enabling native tethering

Hello,
I am using a Sprint Galaxy S4 on stock 4.4.2. I recently set out to enable native tethering so I can have 4g on my tablet. After looking around a little I found the odex and jar for my device/version (NAE) and used TowelRoot to get root access. After copying over the services.jar and services.odex files I found that any time I install a new app it will crash when I try to open it. My root access has also been removed (TowelRoot will not give me root anymore) and some programs can't write to the phone or SD Card such as Box. Since root access has somehow been revoked I can't put the old services.jar and .odex back in place.
I installed the jar and odex by simply copying them to the system/framework folder per a QBKing77 guide. Another guide had suggested installing using goomanager but I quickly found that it was discontinued. I considered using Flashify but ended up just using QBKing's method since it was quicker and required no extra app.
Thanks for any help you can give me. I'm happy to provide additional information (such as a stack trace of a crash) if it's helpful in any way.

No
Just flash the stock rom.
You can backup the following by these methods.
Contacts : Press the menu button in the contacts app. Press on Import/Export then export to SD card.
Apps : Download ApkExtract from the play store and backup the apps.
App data (high score in games etc.) : Download Helium from the playstore and backup the app data. Note app data gets stored on the internal sdcard, so move it to the external sd card.
Images : Go to gallery and press on an album. Merge it with an existing album that is present on the ext memory card.
Rest you know how to
You wont lose anything if you just flash the matching stock rom, but why take chances and then repent.

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately I will still lose my apps and high scores since I cannot currently use any new apps even if I install using the apk instead of play store. But I don't play a lot of phone video games so that's okay and apparently I can just tell Google Play to reinstall all apps. I think I will use this as an opportunity to flash SlimKat and get away from all the silly Sprint bloatware.

Free space on samsung S5

Hi everybody, on my S5 16GB (12GB real) I don't have enough space to install or update my apps
So I need to free some space, for example
Storage/media/.thumbnails/g900fxxu1boj1_5.0 is 509MB
Storage/apps/synthesis vocal 559MB
DOWNLOAD MANAGER 397MB
FACEBOOK Has 393mb under Apps and 240mb under Storage/media/.face
Can I free something?
You can wipe cached data by going into settings -> General -> Storage -> Cached Data which would probably clear 1GB or more.
Then go back and go to the application manager and swipe over to SD card and move as much apps as you can onto your SD card to free up some space.

Get rid of the Facebook and Messenger apps.....They 'hog' way too much of the devices resources and ask for totally un-needed permissions.
Replace them with a Web shortcut (on your home screen) to the web based mobile Facebook site.....you won't get notifications, but is it really *that* important to know if you've been 'poked' or if someone has mentioned you in some pointless post or liked a comment you left?
IMO......*real* life is more important......

Without knowing EXACTLY where on your phone that file is, and how it got there, I can't answer you.....

Storage Card\media\.thumbnails\g900fxxu1boj1_5.0
another strange folder
Storage Card\media\Mobi has three sub folders /.gen - /.alt - /.vcache for a total of 1140MB
I had eyefi mobi app, but on application manager was only 77MB, I uninstalled it but obviously didn't solve
If you have room to install one more app, get SD Maid and run it.....it should clear a lot of 'stuff'.....it may be that it even clears those files you've mentioned.......

Sorry, the app didn't help... Is the same as the "smart manager" which is installed by default
Ok....Make sure usb debugging is switched on (in developer options) then COPY those files to a pc. Then delete them from the phone (after you have noted their original location) That way, you can push them back to the device if their deletion causes problems.....

S7 Edge 6.0.1 g-935fd - Microsoft Office issue

Hi all,
Pardon me if I am asking a relatively dumb question.
I have an S7 edge on 6.0.1, G935FD, rooted.
Microsoft Office, basically Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and One Drive, came preinstalled.
I cannot seem to create a new file.
I have two options for the file's file location. Either it saves in the cloud through One Drive or at the local device storage.
If I choose to save to the cloud, I can create a file.
If I change it to local device storage, I get an error which reads: "Office can't create your file right now. Please try again later."
Here are the things I have tried:
Delete cache.
Clear dalvik through TWRP.
Deleted updates and reupdated.
Uninstalled apps through System App Remover.
Reinstalled updates, tried to convert app from system app to user app then uninstalled and reinstalled.
After all that, I still have the same issue.
Any advice?
Try to use system uninstaller, remove those apps, reinstall from the playstore and try again
Also if you have xposed framework try to hide root from those apps
Didn't try any of those as i'm not rooted
EDIT: just rooted my phone (SM-G935FD) using chainfire autoroot and Offices apps are working fine including save, try to unroot then test again if working using chainfire method to root again
Settings -> Applications -> Word -> Permissions
I'm on the Nougat beta so not sure if the order is exactly that but something similar anyway. Check if Storage is enabled. If it isn't, enable it and do the same for the other Office apps.
Thanks. I'll go ahead and try these.
Thanks, I've checked permissions and they are a-ok!
I used the system uninstaller by jumobile and it's leaving a data folder com.microsoft.excel and i cant delete it. I think it leaves it there so in the event that i do a full system restore the apps will get reinstalled.
Update. I was able to get it to work!
Moved it from a system app to a user app, then uninstalled. Rebooted the phone, then downloaded microsoft excel in playstore. Fixed!!
I think it was in the order of how I did the steps with the reboot.
