[HOWTO][GUIDE] Rooting the M9+ (m9pw / htc_hiau_ml_tuhl) - One (M9+) General

How-to: root the HTC M9+ (tested on Chinese model)
This is a short step by step guide about rooting the device. So far tested on a chinese HTC M9+
A collection of stock partitionas, RUUs, and twrps: https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...uu-m9-hiauml-ruu-recovery-collection-t3690966
DISCLAIMER, WARNING: If you use this guide, all responsibility is yours. The author is not responsible in any way if something goes haywire or any damage happening to the device
This was tested on a Chinese M9+. Please if you try, report back how it goes. Also be aware that currently there are some regions with firmware where we miss the stock recovery image for the different stock ROMs the different M9+ models come with in different countries, and the process contains steps that overwrite Stock recovery, and as of now, I can't provide you with your stock recovery for all possible carriers only a selected few ones and there's no way I know of to save it. (The fastboot boot recovery.img didn't work for me, since the new Download mode didn't allow me to just boot the custom recovery without flashing it. If you know a new way how to do that (boot recovery without flashing it), you can save your own Stock recovery that way, then don't forget to let us know how that can be done!!!) Some region's stock recovery if you want to revert to them: link. Also as soon as you mount ReadWrite the system partition OTA flashing will stop working. You need to back up the system partition in Read-Only mode, available in TWRP 2.8.7.0., and restore that untouched system backup to make OTA work again along with the stock recovery.
Hit the Thanks button if you like the work being done.
You will need
- for Windows:
-- HTC Sync installed (and fastboot.exe inside it's installation, look the fastboot.exe up there)
(-- Optional: Oracle Java JDK 7 + Android SDK platform tools installed (for fastboot.exe, HTC Sync contains fastboot.exe too))
- for Linux:
-- fastboot and working adb connection
- in general:
-- A third party (custom) recovery downloaded, like TWRP (you can get one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/one-m9-general/recovery-twrp-2-8-6-0-english-m9pw-t3116099 ), to flash the SuperSU installer
-- SuperSU installer downloaded (e.g. https://download.chainfire.eu/1001/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.78-20160905010000.zip )
-- Phone and USB cable
Steps to root the device (starting with a locked device):
1. Unlock the Bootloader. You can do it online here: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader Select the 'All Other Supported Models'. Proceed as the HTC site directs you. Read everything carefully.
2. Go into Download mode (with an unlocked bootloader): with a device fully booted you can do so with Power off the phone and then long Power + Vol Down
3. Connect phone to PC with USB cable
4. Flash custom recovery with fastboot in command line:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_xy.img
output for a successful recovery flashing:
Code:
target reported max download size of 800000000 bytes
sending 'recovery' (13996 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.454s]
writing 'recovery'...
(bootloader) HOSD CL#534001
(bootloader) [email protected]
(bootloader) [email protected]%
(bootloader) Update partition OK
(bootloader) [email protected]
OKAY [ 1.272s]
finished. total time: 2.728s
4.1 After a successful flashing of recovery, you can create a full backup with the installed recovery if you wish, before rooting the device, check point 6th. how to go into recovery mode. There select Backup and do it. Then Reboot to normal mode and continue:
5. Boot the phone to normal mode, copy the SuperSU update flashable installer zip to device from your PC From fastboot Download mode to boot to normal mode: just navigate with volume buttons and select Reboot with pressing the Power button.
6. Go into recovery mode: Power off. Long press Power + Vol Down. In Download mode with volume buttons navigate to reboot to bootloader, press power. In bootloader navigate with volume buttons to BOOT TO RECOVERY MODE, press Power.
7. In booted Recovery, install SuperSU flashable zip with Install button: Select Install in the recovery, browse the SuperSU zip and flash it
Then reboot. The SuperSU app should be there amongst the accessible apps, and also now you can go super user in an adb shell (you'll need to enable USB Debugging in Developer options by going into Settings/About/Software information/More and pressing Build number 6+ times to get Developer Options, and then go into Developer options and enable USB Debugging):
Code:
c:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb shell
[email protected]_hiau_ml_tuhl:/ $ su
su
[email protected]_hiau_ml_tuhl:/ #
In general in Download mode and Bootloader mode, you can navigate with Volume Up/Down buttons and select an option with pressing the Power button.
Have a successful flashing, and be careful! And don't forget: We only have a selected few region's stock firmware's stock recovery images to replace the custom ones here on this forum, so only do this if you are okay with custom ROM development (that can be flashed from TWRP/custom recovery) or you can get your hands on a stock recovery for your model's appropriate official stock rom version otherwise official OTA updates might not work with TWRP.
Also as soon as you mount ReadWrite the system partition OTA flashing will stop working. You need to back up the system partition in Read-Only mode, available in TWRP 2.8.7.0., and restore that untouched system backup to make OTA work again along with the stock recovery.
You'll find a bunch of stock recoveries here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/one-m9-general/firmware-stock-recoveries-regions-t3120826

Which version are you on? I purchased M9+ today in India and I am currently on 1.08.707.4 with HTC sense 7.0.
I am asking this because I just received a notification for System Update 1.61.707.4 (382.5 MB) and was wondering if this method would still work if I take this update..

It should work. Nothing is depending on the version of firmware you've got with the update (as this isn't a method to s-off which generally depends on firmware and kernel version because of the exploit it may use.)
I'm confident that you will be able to do the official HTC unlock and then flash recovery and root zip to your phone after the update, that's how it usually is.

HTC one M9 Problem on restarting up
Dear friends and developer,
I had unlocked my htc m9 and I try to install the TWRP 2.7.0.2 but it keep gives me an error after that I press LK DDR TEST AND after that it's stuck on this AND just keep restarting on the same screen and I can't go back to the boot-loader.
any help plz ?

This is m9 plus forum, not m9. Do you have the plus? There's only 2.8.7.0 and 2.8.6.0 recovery for it, no 2.7.0.2

Yes,he has m9 plus "HTC_HIAU_ML".
First, maybe he flash the wrong custom recovery.
Second, he should't run "DDR TEST" mode. It will result in boot loop.
Try to press all 3 botton (volume up + down + power) for a period of time.
Maybe it will power down the device. Give it a go.

Yes I have HTC M9+

This I've not seen yet. Seems like boot to download and recovery mode is not in this menu, which is a serious issue, but very strange as you're s-on. What exactly you flashed as recovery 2.7.0.2 and how?
Reading that the normal ways don't work to get to download mode and it's also missing in bootloader mode too, I've no idea how you can then get to download mode, that way I don't know how you can flash back to ruu. If the download mode cannot load then it's near to brick, as far as my knowledge goes. Maybe someone with more knowledge about a-boot could help, or someone with special equipment to fix the phone. Sorry

In earlier time, there were one option "DDR TEST" on the bootloader menu, I ever saw this.
Someone in Taiwan tried to press this option and result in boot loop.
He must return the device to customer service/repair department finally to resume it.
Here is another case on China.

What are you exactly trying? It works after rooting for most users, and also with the kernel mod. This is the first time someone tells it doesn't

wow, that sounds very bad luck, and poor work by HTC :s

I have just go out from this screen,
Hello friends,
I have just go out from this screen,
the solution is connect the phone to the PC then press and hold the volume down & up together and then press and hold the power for 2 minutes it starts to flash you have to wait until you hear the sound of the first connect then you have to release the power but you have to continue pressing the volume down & up and wait for 20 seconds then press the power again and wait to hear the sound again.
after doing this 2 times then release all of your fingers. .... and wait to see the normal reboot to the HTC screen and it works again.
Thanks a lot GOD

Legend Won't Boot to Recovery

Hey guys,
I'm trying to boot into recovery mode on my Legend, but I've had no success as of now. I've tried using Rom Manager to boot to recovery and I've tried backing up my current Rom as well, but all I get is a phone with a red exclamation mark beside it. I've tried booting into fastboot, (Holding down the volume down button and power button) and hit the "Recovery" button, but still no luck. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
PS: Sorry for posting two threads in two days.
EDIT: Solved. For those having a similar problem, all I had to do was run the recovery once from my PC using the file "Recovery-windows" in the Legend tools. It had to push the recovery files into my Legend again because I factory reset it a couple weeks ago. I've been trying to fix it for hours, love getting to the bottom of things.
This also works:
When you get to the red triangle of doom press volume up and power. Then using the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select choose "install update.zip" (something like that, I honestly can't remember what of actually says) then observe as your phone ends up in recovery.

Hi,
I am new to HTC legend. I have a similar problem, can you please tell me what uyou refer to by "run the recovery once from my PC using the file "Recovery-windows" in the Legend tools." What program is that and how do I get it?
Thanks in advance.
Collectric: have you tried holding the volume up button and then pressing the power button?
For me it takes a few moments of pressing power but then a green box appears and i can move on.
Sent from my Legend using XDA App
Of course I pressed power and volume down, that's basic.
Unfortunately, I made a stupid mistake and tried to replace the recovery file using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
which was prepare for Samsung phone (having the naive thought that Android is the same Android for every one ).
Since then I lost the possibility to go into recovery mode, and the author of the above mentioned program is not answering me, so now I am tryoing to look for a way to "recover" recovery mode ....
Thanks anyhow...
Well when I rooted my phone with theunlockr.com they gave us a legend tools folder and it has the recovery tools to push the recovery files into the phone which worked for me and I can then go into recovery freely I'll give you the link soon.

EDIT: Okay here it is http://theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-root-the-htc-legend/ make sure you download ONLY the "Legend Rooting Tools" and ONLY that you don't need anything else. Unzip the Legend Root Folder in the root of C:/ Also please do not follow the steps they mentioned as your phone is already rooted.
Here are the steps you should do:
1. Unzip the Legend Root Folder to "C:/"
2. Go to the folder in the "C:/" it should be called "R4-legend-root"
3. Put your phone in recovery mode using the power + volume down and click recovery in the PHONE not the PC.
4. When you're on the red triangle of doom (Make sure you are!) click "Recovery-windows" in the PC (Again located in the r4-legend-root folder which you unzipped)
5. A black box should come up pushing the files to your phone
6. Your phone should be in recovery mode
7. You can now go into recovery mode freely using ROM Manager instead of the computer like I do.
PS: Sorry for the late reply I was off on vacation.
Many thanks man, no need to apologize...
Well, the whole point is that strangely enough I CAN'T go into recovery mode on my phone...
Since that stupid act of trying to work with the Samsung program, when I press power and volume down I get into "Factory mode" which gives me the options to test my device, clear the flash and Reboot.
I don't even have the option to go into recovery mode...
I can try and copy all those files manually, as my phone is rooted. I will copy the files from PC into my SD then move them with my phone "total commander" into the proper folders in the root flash.
Does it sound like a plan?
Thanks again
Hi,
As you probably guessed, root is read only, so I met a dead end. I have no way to go into recovery mode thus can't replace any file in root.
I tried to reboot to recovery using "adb reboot recovery", the phone reboots and get stuck with green HTC on the screen - I had to remove battery, put back, press power with volume down to enter "Factory mode", select reboot and get again normal operation.
Any innovative idea?
Thanks in advance...
Maybe you can try to reroot your phone using the unlockr.com method. But I'm not a specialist at these kinds of issues, I wish to be more help. But is there any you can try to reroot your phone using theunlockr.com method?
Yes, I am working on it but I am not so optimistic as, on the way, they also instruct to go into recovery mode. Anyhow, till I discover something better I'll give it a shot.
Many thanks on your assistance.
As I suspected, its a vicious circle, all the repair methods eventually end in the recovery mode. To recover recovery mode I have to go into recovery mode - sad but seems to be true. I will try to open a new thread maybe there is some Android sage with some trick in the sleeve for me....
Thanks again
I'm sorry I couldn't be of help. If you do manage to get it fixed please tell me how you did it because it would be very useful to know recovery mode is essential for every phone. Thank you and sorry again.

I had a problem with the red exclamation mark when trying to load the recovery image on my phone after rooting with the method on theunlockr.com.
To solve it download a recovery image from here, rename it "update.zip" and placed it in the root of your sdcard.
Then boot up your phone and attempt to load recovery as before by pressing the power button and volume DOWN. When you get to the red exclamation mark screen, press and hold volume UP and the power button. This should bring up the Android system recovery. Select flash update.zip and this will flash and load the recovery image.
See here.

Hey, I've been doing this for few months now every time I need to enter recovery after I recovered from a bootloop for installing CM7.
However, is there a way to permanently remove this 'wrong' feature by having to manually click update.zip every time? Can I just restore my Legend back to the original state where it would automatically enter recovery without having to press "Vol Up + Power Button" combo and applying update.zip?
Thanks!

If you look at the top line of the bootloader screen it will have the phrase
'S-ON' somewhere; this means 'security on'. The result is that the /system and /recovery partitions are read-only.
There are instructions here on how to S-OFF the Legend. (xda discussion thread here)
I haven't done it myself. Personally, I felt that the risks of bricking and the time spent researching and doing it outweighed the benefits of a writeable /system and /recovery partition.

So are you saying that this "extra step" resulted from the fact that my phone is still S-ON? If that is so, I guess the benefits of this read-only system allows me to flash ROMs much easier (without having to connect to ADB).
Thanks!
I'm not sure if this is gonna help, but you can try pressing the "BACK" button while pressing power on?

[Q] Device bootloops after messed up partition

I once tried to use geno's partition resize, and after a reboot, it cannot boot into system anymore. Stuck at the huawei logo.
Since I'm quite familiar with linux, I tried this solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1971266
However, my linux installation didn't show any drives when it's in pink screen mode, so I'm pretty much stuck here.
In Windows 8 it did show two HUAWEI Technologies device (no drivers though) in pink screen mode.
I can't access recovery mode either, holding power + vol up only does normal boot for some strange reason. Anyone can help me out here?

try put official GB dload file on sd card, then put sd card in phone press power up+power down+power...
maybe it'll help you.
I tried that too, and it still bootloops. Not much luck.
Go to recovery and wipe everything. Then, reboot recovery, and then try partitioning again.
I can't get into recovery by pressing power + vol up. It just does normal boot (which bootloops).
If there would be any other way to get into recovery (such as via ADB or update.app) would be highly appreciated.

Yes, you can boot into recovery via adb:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
But, you cannot use that until your phone is booted up.
If that doesn't work, you can follow these instructions to hard reset your phone:
http://www.hard-reset.com/huawei-u8800-ideos-x5-hard-reset.html
Good Luck.
I can't get it to do the hard reset either. It just boots normally, aside from the bootloop.
I believe I need to fix the partition first before I try to reinstall stock. I hear that stock doesn't work with custom partitions. Which is why I'd prefer to at least get some access to the device via USB in order to fix it.
Ah well. It's a failing device anyway. Even before the brick the camera doesn't work anymore, regardless of which ROM I choose. Maybe it's time to move on for me.

Well, I tried this too (in fact I stated it in the first post) but pink screen mode isn't showing any device (I typed in "dmesg" in the Linux Terminal, none is found).
I appreciate your help, though. If I can solve the detection problem, I should be able to recover my phone using this method. I'd be happy to share some logs if it helps.

Hey, this is my first post well here it goes
Step 1 :- Format the sd card and put dload folder in it ( you'll get it from the official rom zip file)
Step 2 :- press and hold vol+ & vol- and then power button, it'll start upgrading
Step 3 :- now here is the tricky part!!! i was stuck here too and gone half mad well, let it reboot it will format cache etc and then bootloops, now turn off the device and then turn on pressing vol+ and power button, or u can try by pressing home, vol+ and power button, u'll b in recovery mode i.e in official rom builtin i guess.
Step 4 :- once in recovery, select reset factory default and clear partition cache, and then reboot!!!! Voila u will b able to finally boot successfully...
Now listen very carefully, u got only one chance here, cause if u reboot ur device again then bootloops will start again so in the first go, root the device by superoneclick and then install recovery i guess u knw all that and then u will be able to return to stock rom by flashing... once u've installed CWM then u r good to go bootloop wont effect ya SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH THOUGH

To reflash a full firmware image you could try the relatively user-friendly yotaflasher application and ROM images from here. I haven't used this myself, but it's software by Yota, so should be safe. You can ask it not to touch /data, to preserve apps, settings etc.
A less user friendly way to reflash a full firmware image:
- Download a full firmware image (EU 1.60 flashable version here, let me know if you require a different one)
- With the phone off, press vol down + power until you see "Downloading ...."
- If you can't turn the phone off normally, keep vol down + power for at least 15 seconds till phone reboots, keep holding till you end up with "Downloading ...."
- connect to a PC with adb+fastboot with a USB cable
- You can now boot TWRP image (fastboot boot recovery_twrp_yd201_alpha2.img , see here.
- if you have important files on your phone, you can back them up now by using adb shell/adb pull (e.g. adb pull /sdcard/Pictures/yeti_sighting.jpg)
- In TWRP go to advanced -> sideload and confirm
- now you can sideload a ROM image from the PC with adb sideload <image>.zip, it should show progress while it's uploading the firmware. If it errors, you probably haven't confirmed initiating sideload in previous step.
- wipe cache&dalvik and reboot
thank you, the first way worked and my phone runs normally now.
thank you
Help please

Root the phone using methods written on this forum > download build 1.60 flammable zip > flash that.
If all you want is Google apps then root the phone then download and flash a gapps package. The full Yota build zip is recommended though.
Can't download yotaflasher application from the link... does anybody have the exe file?

Just click on the YotaPhoneFlasher folder then click the file (yotaphone2_flasher.exe), and save to your harddisk.
Or you can try this link straight to the yotaphone2_flasher.exe file.

Dude I've just bought my phone, and it has the same problem. But I'm a complete noob, how did you fix it? Please, i've just bought it.
On RU build 134 when I tried to swap users my user with Defaut user, the phone blocked, the display is on (time is the same when first happend - just a freeze image) but I can't do nothing on phone. Is a way to reset? because on a normal way I would remove battery but yota dont have this option.

The analogue method of pulling out the battery is pressing the POWER button for at least 10 seconds. The phone will reboot.
Thanks, I pushed vol down + Power and the phone restarted normaly.
PS: If you know where to get a book from Алекса́ндр Солжени́цын - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn to read on yota display, send me.

You need to keep pressing the power up button after the showing of "POWERED BY ANDROID", the power does not need to be pressed after then.
If you can still not reach recovery, you probably have a broken recovery (maybe wrong version) and something else is messed up.
When you flash recovery, you need to instantly go into recovery mode by pressing +/up on calling the according command
(fastboot reboot).
It does not look like you changed file system related things, did you change anything on your system/with root permissions?
Are you sure the installation process went without failure etc?
Getting out the cause (kernel logs etc) would be a bit hard without getting into recovery mode[and maybe also nonworking kernel], like stated out here

Successfully semi-rooted softbank 305sh from Chinese TWRP backup

Dear comrade,
With tewilove's root apk, I was able to install twrp. Later, with TWRP I was able to restore a 305sh-s0020-cn_working.rar downloaded from baidu successfully which has with supersu.
However, wasn't satisfied with the s0020 version of the rom, tried to upgrade it with firmware Sharp-305SH-firmware-0106.zip even the recovery partition is totally blown up.
Now even the sharp logo doesn't come up.
Nothing works only black screen. Phone vibrates after pressing 10s power button.
Is there anything I can do to unbrick this phone?
I tried everything to go to download mode or recovery mode or adb mode none available.
Any wise man out there can flash the rom so I can use this wonderful phone again? I'm able to do the basic soldering and minor development.
Sorry it's kinda development topic but couldn't upload there as I'm new to this site sorry.
Thank you all.

Press the volume button + (in the off state) and not releasing to connect to the computer (hold until the beep)
Then through ADB command to write "adb reboot recovery"
P.S Google Translator

Thanks for the reply.
I've tried it but not working. It just vibrating after few seconds and not even connected.
Device not found all the time. It's quite evident that I blow up the recovery partition with wrong image.
I wish I can do some firm flash at rom level.
Thanks,

$25 Paypal TO *YOU* for fixing VKY-L29 boot issues / possibly brick

Hey guys,
A friend of mine handed me a phone I used a few years ago - a Huawei P10+. The problem is, it won't boot. A friend offered a small bounty - so I thought I'd extend that small bounty to people here for immediate assistance. If you take Paypal, there $25 USD up for grabs if your links/instructions and assistance lead to unbricking - correct booting of the phone....
WHAT WE KNOW:
- VKY-L29 dual sim phone
- Previously been successfully rooted and was functioning fine
- Previous User may have tried wiping EVERYTHING (unsuccessfully, obviously) for re-installation of stock ROM
THE PROBLEM:
The phone displays the white/orange text screen, stating "Your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted. To learn more visit: http://zh.ui.vmall.com/emotiondownload.php?mod=restore
(1) Press power to continue .... nothing happens when pressed
(2) Press volume up for 3 secs to enter ERecovery to restore your device ... this works, but CANNOT download, or fails to download package over WIFI (only other options are to shutdown/reboot)
(3) Your device will continue to boot 5 seconds later if no operation ... nothing happens, it just hangs on this screen - even when prompt shows "Your device is rebooting now"
It doesn't matter if this stays rooted or not, we just need to successfully reinstall the STOCK ROM and booting/functioning normally.
Any assistance is appreciated.
Regards

Boot in eRecovery by holding the Volume Up button, after booting in eRecovery just download the latest package via connecting to a Wi-Fi network and it should boot up just fine.

Try downloading an older firmware extract the contents of the .app file using huawei firmware extractor and flash system.img recovery_ramdisk.img oeminfo.img product.img and vendor.img using fastboot and if the phone boots up just update it to a newer firmware, that's how i did it to my P10 Plus, it didn't wanna download via eRecovery too, sorry for the misunderstanding i forgot that it doesn't wanna download for you, i don't have the device with me now because i broke my display (again) so it's getting fixed but it won't be done untill saturday, i'll upload the firmware i used so that you can try too.
if the bootloader is unlocked flash twrp using the command: fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk "path to TWRP.img"
after flashing type: fastboot reboot and immediately start pressing the Volume Up and power button untill the HUAWEI logo shows up, after booting to TWRP flash oeminfo.img using the install option in TWRP, after that reboot and try downloading the firmware using eRecovery again, hopefully this time it will let you download it.

Dude pls wait don't try this i found another way, i bricked my phone accidentally today and i found a way, gonna take me some time to explain but i'll try my best.
So first of all download this firmware here extract it on your pc and boot to bootloader and flash TWRP_kirin.img to recovery_ramdisk, after that reboot the phone and boot in recovery via holding the volume up and power button, when in TWRP copy the dload folder from the firmware you extracted on your pc to your phone after that copy the RECOVERY8_NoCheck.img to your phone and flash it as recovery ramdisk via the install option in TWRP, power off your phone and press and hold the volume buttons and the power button and wait for it to boot and let it install the update, i really hope this helps you, it helped me after struggling with it all day long.
Hi Lester, it's been an eternity since I was online here as I put this on the back-burner with more pressing work and family priorities. Thank you very much for providing the files. I noticed the ROM firmware is EU, when i am outside of EU....but shouldn't be too big of a problem.... I am getting around to doing all of this now, I have downloaded the files. When are you typically online to chat about this?

It cannot boot into TWRP, only the eRecovery. No option to flash anything on SD card, other than connecting to WIFI...
Hii roosta,
I might have some problem with you, let me facing your thread , I 'like to learn too how to make my P1o plus back to normal again, it's being long time for me to bring this up...
