Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I restore Factory Firmware if my Bootloader is locked?
Yes. However attempting to downgrade to an older version of Android may fail. Even with an unlocked Bootloader, downgrading cannot be guaranteed. It's also important to be aware that flashing the wrong Bootloader (motoboot.img) for your model can have serious consequences. Always establish your model of Moto G before flashing.
What does 'Preflash Validation Failed' mean?
'Preflash Validation Failure' happens when the Firmware Image you are flashing is older than one you have previously flashed. In other words, flashing a Lollipop Firmware Image, will cause a KitKat Firmware Image to return: Preflash Validation Failed.
After flashing Firmware Image files phone gets stuck during boot-up | will not load Android?
Refer to the guide. Check you are naming the files correctly, and make sure you are flashing all of the 'sparsechunk' files - not just those mentioned in the tutorial. The 'sparsechunk' commands listed there are not to be copied exactly, different firmware images have different files.
Downgrading and OTA Updates
If you downgrade, it is advised to avoid all OTA Updates. These updates can result in a hard-brick (phone will not turn on) if you have a newer Bootloader than the one expected. For example, you have the Lollipop Bootloader, but have downgraded to Android KitKat.
How to Disable OTA Updates?
(1) Without Root access
It may be possible to do this via:
Settings > Apps > [swipe left to 'All'] > MotorolaOTA (or something similarly named) > Disable
(2) With Root access
Google Play Store has many apps that will allow you to 'freeze' the OTA Update service. Titanium Backup is a common example.
Alternatively, with a 'root access' file explorer, you can delete or rename the following files:
/system/etc/security/otacerts.zip
/system/priv-app/3c_ota/3c_ota.apk
These additional files can be removed or renamed: (If you still get an OTA Update notification)
/system/priv-app/3c_checkin/3c_checkin.apk
/system/priv-app/3c_devicemanagement/3c_devicemanagement.apk
/system/priv-app/3c_notification/3c_notification.apk

It's not guaranteed. I suggest you flash stock ROMs via custom recovery, rather than risking the phone by using fastboot to change system. If you must flash one of these images, try to avoid including the Bootloader (motoboot.img) - in the flashing process.
The Retail EU firmware and Retail GB firmware are essentially identical.
Flashable zips of Lolipop Stock ROMs are available here:

Here's the one mirror for XT1032 Retail US:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952608946.
Please add it to the OP.

I flashed the Retail EU firmware for 5.0 it flashed well however it doesn't boot, i tried factory reset and wiping cache via stock recovery.
Its stuck at the boot logo.
pls help.

i am currently on lollipop GPE 5.1 boot loader but the ROM i flashed was GPE 4.4.4 as i was trying to downgrade but i got stuck on the boot logo and nothing happened, so i installed latest twrp recovery and i wiped everything including internal storage, now theoretically there is no OS on my moto G. So my question is can i directly flash the firmware file of either the GPE 5.1 or Asia retail 5.0.2? do i need to avoid gpt.bin and motorboat.img?

Who are on 4.1.1 firmware, are requested to update their device to latest 4.1.2 (2013 released) as soon as possible, older ROMs have SDS (sudden death syndrome) bug and can brick device spontaneously. latest ROMs are believed to be patched for this bug with kernel and recovery.
ROM mentioned here are pure stock ROMs and it is same as you recieve from kies, as well flashing these ROMs doesn't raise flash counter. some of ROM also having prerooted version and those are same as stock ROM but root files are pushed in ROM, so you won't need to have root it. prerooted ROMs mentioned here are also won't raise flash counter. If you flash prerooted ROM and later want to unroot, simply open SuperSu from application drawer - setting - unroot
Here is guide how to find stock ROM from SamMobile
- Open This SamMobile firmware page.
- Type device Model number in search box
- This will find all latest ROM for that device, click on Kies symbol next you your desired ROM to get download link.
- To get ROM from specific country, select Firmware option on page
- Fill up required option. This will show all available ROM from selected country.

Flashing firmware with Mobile odin to keep root intact and flash counter untouched - Here
Flashing with heimdall - Here -(thanks to as i9000)
First thing I do recommend just after flashing ROM
-Register to samsung A/C and enable Remote control
Here is detail guide.
How to Root/Unroot SGN2 (N7100)
To ROOT 4.3 Read THIS
This post is for Rooting 4.1.* only.
If you are going to Root your device, after successful rooting first thing to do is make EFS backup(link to tool for EFS backup included in guide).
Dear friends
I can give you simple two steps to root a device, but i won't. I wish you should have all the knowledge about different methods of rooting and pros and cons of each methods available. This may cause this guide longer, bit difficult but ultimately it will never turn down. read again 2-3 times and still you have any confusion, feel free to post any query you are having. Good luck and Happy Rooting !
Now proceed to root
Map for this post
A.How to root N7100
Advantages and disadvantages of each method of root.
Method 1:Root with stock Recovery
Method 2: Root with CWM recovery Update 15.09.13 - New Tool available here - Though I recommend to read this post for knowledge base.
Method 3 : Root with simple APK
B.EFS Backup
C.Unroot N7100
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A.How to Root N7100
Big Thanx to Chainfire and Chenglu for great work.
Select your choice from one of these
1. Root with Stock Recovery - It will give full root access but have stock recovery. You can set your flash counter '0' and so ready to claim warranty. If you want device full stock + root this is choice for you.
2. Root + Advanced CWM - This will give Root access as well advanced CWM - Here you can reset counter, but once reboot to recovery, it will raise flash counter, Find option to reset counter on every boot (only play store version).
3.Root with ExynosAbuse apk - simply install apk to gain root access. (wont work on latest 4.1.2 ROM, Jan 2013/LL7 and later)
So which one I should select? OR Which one is better?
All Methods are given by elite developer and all are good, but having its cons and pros. e.g.
Method 1:
Disadvantage : Here you will get full root access, but here recovery will remain stock, so you won't have option to flash zip files (still you can flash zip with Mobile Odin), but you won't have any option for Nandroid backup/Restore.
Advantage : You have to reset flash counter once only, then whenever you need to reset to unroot/ready to claim warranty, just you need to go to superSU - setting - unroot.
So If you are Flash counter conscious and really don't have need for nandroid backup, This one is for You.
Method 2:
Disadvantage : Note2 having auto check sum boot loader and it will check for custom things on every boot. So rooting with this method your counter will remain 1, even if you have reset it with triangle away. Though one possibility is there to reset counter, you have to use market version of Triangle Away with option 'Reset counter on every boot'. But keep in mind this option only available if your kernel support this, stock kernel won't support it. Again before claiming warranty you need to flash stock recovery.
Advantage : You will have feature rich recovery like flashing zip from recovery and Nandroid backup/Restore.
So If you are not much worrying about flash counter or warranty and you really need Nandroid backup, This one is for you.
Method 3: - (wont work on latest 4.1.2 ROM, Jan 2013/LL7 and later)
Advantage :Biggest thing you can disable exploit and make device safer. Easiest, No PC Needed. Simply install apk to root device, No flashing/Resetting counter needed.
Disadvantage :Camera issue on some FW, but reversible by enabling exploit in one click

4.Connect device to PC and wait till device successfully added to com port (it will turn light blue) (see image below)
5.Hit ‘Start’ to flash
6.Once it flashed successfully, you can see 'PASS' in table above the ID :COM, you can disconnect device from PC
7.Reboot device and you will have superSU in application drawer.
Now you can use Triangle away and reset counter '0', Read Next post (post#3)
Again All credits goes to Chainfire, your support to Chainfire
2. Root with Advanced CWM - By Phil3759
Big Thanx and credit goes to Chenglu & Phil3759
Download :
1.
Download PhilZ Touch recovery (CWM based) - This recovery using SDS patched kernel code
[ Here you can find detail fuction of recovery as well support related to recovery] again big thanx and credit goes to Phil3759
2. download SuperSu and busybox and copy zip file to Sd card of device
Procedure :
Step 1
Make sure you have installed Kies OR Samsung USB driver
1.Open Odin and select PDA tab (see image below)
2.Point to recovery file you have downloaded philz_touch_* -n7100.tar.md5
3.Now switch off device and reboot in download mode
press Vol down + Home +Power, And then, press Volume UP button in Warning Page to enter the Download Mode
4.Connect device to PC and wait till device successfully added to com port (it will turn light blue) (see image below)
5.Hit ‘Start’ to flash
6.Once it flashed successfully, you can see 'PASS' in table above the ID :COM, you can disconnect device from PC
Note :
normally, phone should auto-reboot into recovery.
If it reboots into android and your recovery remains stock, repeat above steps and untick "autoreboot" in odin. Once flash is done, keep pressing power button until it reboots (normally will go to recovery)
when in recovery, if you choose option "reboot system now" and you get "yes - disable flash recovery", select that option to avoid stock recovery overwriting cwm
Click to collapse
IF YOU STILL HAVE ISSUE IN FLASHING CWM (Stock recovery overwrites CWM) - First root with option 1 and then follow THIS
Step 2 :
Now reboot to recovery and flash superSu and busy box file from recovery, which you have copied to Sd card and reboot system
Done ! you should have SuperSU application in drawer. Read post#3 regarding how to reset counter.
3.Root with apk No counter reset needs, Easiest - Credit goes to Chainfire, alephzain (not works on latest ROM, Jan 2013/LL7 and later)
1.Download latest from chainfire's original thread
2.Install application as routine apk installation and open it.
3.Open Exynos Abuse application from App drawer
4.Select Root device (see image)
5.It will ask SuperSU permission, Grant it See image)
6.Now your device is rooted, for security purpose you can disable Exploit.(see image)
Note : This may break camera, but unchecking disable exploit make it working again
7.Open SuperSU from app drawer and update binary (see image)
How to Unroot and make status Normal
Open Exynos Abuse app, uncheck disable explot and select Unroot device (see image)
Restart device and wait for 10 min. and then you can check status.
Reseting Counter
Above method will raise flash counter and you will need to reset counter to reclaim warranty, Read next post for it (post#3)
B.ESF Backup - First thing i do recommend after rooting.
EFS Backup Also read This
Why so?
EFS folder contains some important and some basic info related to our device identity like Wi-Fi address, Bluetooth MAC address and the very main IMEI address (nv_data.bin).
Now if this EFS partition accidently corrupted then your phone’s IMEI no. will erased and you can not make voice call further. This kind of damage is often not accepted by the service center of your respected handset’s company.
Here your backup can only be savior for you.
C.How to Unroot :
- This is commonly needed before sending it to service station and reclaim warranty.
1.As discussed in post #3 if you have any custom recovery/Kernel first you need to replace it with stock one. Post #6 of this thread having stock recovery/Kernel.If you have custom ROM, then you will have to flash stock ROM.(you can use mobie odin to keep root intact to reset counter)
2.You need to use Triangle away if your binnary count is non zero (read post #3)
3.Once your flash counter is 'No' then you can simply unroot from superSU setting
if your device status is -Modified, you can do this trick to reset to normal
setting - appl manager - All - clear data for SysScope as well Enterprise SysScope
This should change system setting to Normal
If still you have modified status, you can wipe cache and data from recovery.
If still it doesn't change status, try removing Ext SD card
4. This is optional but full proof method to unroot and won't leave any footprint of previous root.(provided you flash counter is 'No')
-Flash Stock ROM with PC Odin
-Wipe cache and data.

Chainfire and Chenglu
Reset Flash counter
There is great tool from elite developer Chainfire known as Triangle Away
From CF -
When you run TriangleAway, if your device and firmware are supported, it will show you the detected state of the binary (custom or official) and flash counter value, and the option to Reset flash counter. Please confirm that the information shown is correct before resetting the values.
On a number of devices, TriangleAway can work, but your firmware may not be supported directly. In that case, the app will tell you it needs to reboot into a special boot mode, which will be happen if you select Reset flash counter. The device will reboot into a special mode which will allow you to review the current status and reset the binary and flash counter values (or abort and do nothing.)
using Triangle Away may unmount your SD card. Reboot or manually remount it from Android settings.

Source and full thread by Chainfire
Get Triangle Away to support CF
Steps to reset counter
-Download Triangle away and install
-Open Triangle away from appl drawer, grant SU permission
-Depends on your recovery/kernel, it may ask to download add on about 7.4MB file, dwnload it.
-After downloading select reset counter from application menu
-This will reboot device in special recovery, and you will see some colored text menu with big yellow, with round circle exclamation mark.
-Read available option, confirm your flash counter showing on this page and select appropriate menu(vol up) to reset counter.
-Your device will reboot and you will have counter '0'
In case if you are using CWM it may raise again on reboot, read below.
NoteII having new bootloader with auto checksum of recovery, so If you are using custom recovery flash counter may raise again on rebooting to recovery
So if you are using stock recovery, reseting count to '0' with triangle away is enough. In case you are using custom recovery, even after reseting counter again it will raise to 1 if you reboot device to recovery. For this you have to use option 'Reset at every boot' in triangle away. This option is available on Play version, and only you can see if you have custpm recovery and your kernel support it. (Adam kernel reported to support this.)
Common question about reseting counter
I have reset counter but system status still 'custom'
You should have stock recovery (Method A in post#2)
If you already have stock recovery(CF Auto root) then reset counter first
then wipe cache + wipe data(factory reset) + re wipe cache
You should now have system status 'official'
Edit : Here is some trick to change status without wiping data
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2124758
I have rest counter but after reboot again it goes to 1
This happen if you have rooted with CWM/TWRP recovery(method 2 in post#2)
This is neither error of recovery nor triangle away. This happens due to new bootloader which have auto checksum for recovery, when you reboot to custom recovery count will raise.
To prevent this you need to have play version of Triangle away, and you should check (enable) 'Auto reset at boot'. Again this feature depends on kernel/recovery is supported or not, Adam kernel reported to support this.

Yes it should be like this.

Seems there are a number of different ROMs around and only the more recent seem to have the Multi/Split screen - from what I can gather, JRO03C.N7100XXXLI5 and JRO03C.N7100XXXLIE do not have the multi screen and the only one that is reported to have it ends in NT7100XXALIX
Hopefully we will be able to get various stock ROMS here or from SAMMOBILE in the near future.
Obviously I will try to list every rom i shall get.
Just like on note forum thread (1st link on my sign)

What about this

do you think it will work?
I don’t have SGN2 to test

[BASEBAND's + KERNEL's] all i8190 models in one place [CWM+TWRP]

This will be a place where you can find flashable zips for basebands, and kernels for various I8190 models
both extracted from official Samsung Firmwares and packed in flashable zip file.
I started to make just baseband zips for i8190N, based on script coming from Tys0n,
in time i was asked also to provide stock kernels for this device, and later on i decided to expand this Thread to all other device models, so lets make this a place for sharing and discussing about basebands in first plan, but also kernels if needed...
all zips are for custom recovery's like CWM or TWRP. [to be on safe side, do make a backup first, to be able to go back]
Basebands: Download links are on 2. post, flash zip from recovery and reboot twice if baseband unknown in phone settings.
[If u have problem like baseband XXXX and no connection to network, flash: for i8190 - thanks to tys0n; for i8190L; for i8190N - thanks to piskor, more info about this HERE, thanks to hasdroid]
Kernels: Download links are on 3. post, flash zip from recovery and reboot
Kernels marked as "STOCK" are for STOCK based ROMs only (bootlooping on custom ROMS)
Karnels marked as CUSTOM are for custom ROMs only (lice CM, Carbon, Omni etc.)
Samsung firmware (baseband) version number reference:
the last three letters that appear on the firmware code or name is the firmware version and follows a naming convention by Samsung which represents the build date and revision of the firmware.
So you can tell by looking at the firmware code which is a newer one:
for example, I8190XXAMJ2 is an older firmware, I8190XXAMJ3 is somewhat newer than *MJ2 (3 is greater than 2), while I8190XXAML1 is newer than *MJ3 (L is greater then J), etc. but what is the meaning of these three letters?
actually, for instance, the last three letters of I8190XXAMJ2 is M, J and 2, represents the year, the month of the firmware was built and the revision respectively. here is the break down for these letters:
- the first letter represents the year
J = 2010
K = 2011
L = 2012
M = 2013
N = 2014, etc
so XAMJ3 is a 2013 firmware while XANA2 is a 2014 firmware
- the second letter represents the month
A = January
B = February
C = March
D = April

restored my stock stock rom backup in twrp, and baseband now shows XXAMI1, and it working... interesting.
Nandroid backup doesn't contain baseband, so it has been flashed properly and works

Hello,
today I flashed Maclaw's CM11 and I have no signal. I want to backup modem, before flashing new modem. How can I do this? I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145464 but it isn't for i8190.
Edit: solved

Please need help!
I flashed Maclaw's Carbon ROM 4.4.x and tried to flash new baseband from here...I flash it over TWRP and reboot phone...but phone stuck in a boot loop :/
Can't boot it in recovery mod...just can boot to download mode
What to do now?
So i find baseband I had on my phone before flash new one here (last one: XXAMJ2)...but it's .img file and I cannot flash it from TWRP.
Any idea how to flash it other way?

Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a Factory Firmware Image?
These images are not OTA Updates, and have nothing to do with OTA Updates. These files are digitally signed by Motorola; which is why they can be flashed with a Locked Bootloader.
Please do not offer your OTA Update zips, or dumps of your OTA-Updated system. Also, just because an OTA Update is available, does not mean a corresponding Firmware Image will immediately appear in first post. There can be a delay of days, weeks or months between the roll-out of an OTA Update and the availability of a Factory Firmware Image.
Is "X" Firmware Image available?
If you don't find the firmware image you seek in first post; your question has already been answered. What you see - is what is currently available. The firmware image will be added asap. Please be patient.
Can I flash Factory Firmware if my Bootloader is locked?
Yes. However attempting to downgrade to an older version of Android may fail - 'Preflash validation' error. Even with an unlocked Bootloader, downgrading cannot be guaranteed. It's also important to be aware that flashing the wrong Bootloader (bootloader.img) for your model can have serious consequences. Always establish your model of Moto G before flashing.
I get a 'Preflash validation' error when flashing a Firmware Image
The Firmware Image you are trying to flash is too old. You can only flash a firmware image that matches, or is newer than the most recent system version you have had on your phone. However the former scenario can also sometimes return the error. In which case, your options are to wait for an even newer firmware image or unlock Bootloader and flash a ROM zip.
After flashing Firmware Image files phone gets stuck during boot-up | will not load Android?
Refer to the guide. Check you are naming the files correctly, and make sure you are flashing all of the 'sparsechunk' files - not just those mentioned in the tutorial. The 'sparsechunk' commands listed there are not to be copied exactly, different firmware images may have different files.
After flashing Firmware Image I have X problem in Android?
There are no major bugs in these firmware images. Users are either not flashing the firmware properly, or not erasing userdata. If anyone has problems in Android after flashing a firmware image, show me a log of the fastboot flashing process.
Downgrading and OTA Updates
If you downgrade, it is advised to avoid all OTA Updates. These updates can result in a hard-brick (phone will not turn on) if you have a newer Bootloader than the one expected. For example, you have the Marshmallow Bootloader, but have downgraded to Android Lollipop.
How to Disable OTA Updates?
(1) Without Root access
It may be possible to do this via:
Settings > Apps > [swipe left to 'All'] > MotorolaOTA (or something similarly named) > Disable
(2) With Root access
Google Play Store has many apps that will allow you to 'freeze' the OTA Update service. Titanium Backup is a common example.
Alternatively, with a 'root access' file explorer, you can delete or rename the following files:
/system/etc/security/otacerts.zip
/system/priv-app/3c_ota/3c_ota.apk
These additional files can be removed or renamed: (If you still get an OTA Update notification)
/system/priv-app/3c_checkin/3c_checkin.apk
/system/priv-app/3c_devicemanagement/3c_devicemanagement.apk
/system/priv-app/3c_notification/3c_notification.apk
Thanks again sir. I had downloaded the 1540 the other day, but today I find out that there is a different fw for 2 gig than for the 1 gig. Now I'm downloading the 2 gig fw (course, it won't do me any good since I won't have the phone until next March, or so, after I get my tax refund.
That was real quick.
Thanks a lot mate!
Can anybody upload the logo.bin file for the firmware as i don't want download 2 gigs of file.

From my experience with Moto G (1st Gen) - wait until there are newer Firmware Images rather than applying OTA Updates. Even on an entirely unmodified / un-rooted phone, a certain percentage accept the upgrade but it introduces bugs / software quirks, or break the phone entirely - soft-brick and hard-brick. If you must apply an OTA Update, restore phone to factory via one of the existing Firmware Images beforehand.
I have the XT1540 from Koodo (Telus subrand).
1. Is switching to any of the XT1540 roms possible? What's difference between all of them?
2. If so would that also unlock the phone?

ROMs tend to be identical apart from any carrier bloat or system changes related to supporting specific forms of connectivity - for example CDMA / AWS.
Flashing another ROM will not 'Network Unlock' the phone.
If you are going to attempt flashing another ROM, only the system 'sparsechunks' should be required.
Note: Flashing the Bootloader (motoboot.img) - even for the same model - could potentially affect / break connectivity irreversibly with your current carrier.

You do not flash these zips directly - you must extract the contents and flash with fastboot.
To recover your phone you only need to flash the following: (Depending on the model - filenames may change)
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.4
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.5
The following command will erase internal storage, if you also want that:
mfastboot erase userdata

I had a C605 and it seems to be for all latin american (spanish speakers) countries. So you can include Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guiana, etc., in the list.
Is the C567 the ONLY one branded for the US region?? I am using the "international" C185 in the US on the AT&T network, but would like to rebrand to the US region.

Are you sure C02 is Germany?
The recently released C02 version seems to be Spain/Vodafone.
Hi guys, I got a L29C605 that is a Latin American one, and got the B111 firmware, I wanted to know if I can just install a USA firmware and "rebrand" my phone so it gets the USA updates, can I do that?

C02 no is Germany is Vodafone Spain.
Will I still get updates when I move to another region?
Hello,
I have a question:
I bought my phone in Jordan, which is in the middle-east, so I am currently running C185.
Now, I've moved to Germany and I will be living here for six more months.
Will I still get updates for C185 now that I am in Germany?
Thank you in advance for any and all answers!

Yes, you will, but in some cases you will not. It is not depend on country what you are living. Huawei can mess your information, so you need to watch what actual version is now.
