[Q] mount sd option kills card - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

silly question time, but when i go to storage on galaxy s5 and press the option to mount card, it makes the sd card unreadable and corrupt and i have to format it if i want to use it again losing all data. should os not recognise that the sd card is already mounted and not try and force a mount on it? tried this a few times just to see and every time and kills the sd card.

Tried a different card? Maybe it's a faulty SDcard

Maybe youre formatting it wrong, dont put it as ntfs or anything, your bwst option would be fat32 or exfat or similar.

Is your sdcard locked by that little plastic knob on your card?
what files system are you formatting with recommend you use this app to format externally in your computer with a card reader

thanks for the tip, its working great now
Well, its not working again. It was working for a while, then i had to root my SGS so i removed SD card, rooted my SGS and then reinserted Sd card, now its saying Damaged SD card you have to format it, when i format it, no error message appears and nothing happens and notification area is still saying Damaged SD card.
Any suggestions??
What brand is it, dont tell me its a unbranded one, or a cheap ebay one, it could be a fake one, use you pc to format it fat or use the sd formatter, when you put it into the phone, unmount it then format again using the phone before use.
I have a 32gb adata class 2, 32gb lexar class 10, and many 8gb and 16gb from kingston, toshiba and sandisk in class 2 to class 6, all works.
Connect phone with USB cable in mass storage mode .
Format the SD card then run scandisk/error checking on the card .

[Q] Rooting without internal SD

Hi,
I got a Galaxy Y from a friend and I was trying to MOD it. I discovered that the internal SD is not available... and no way to get it back. I tried to wipe data, hard reset, stock firmware upload with ODIN but no way to get the internal SD back. I tried ADB in order to try to push the ZIP files in a ROM folder but of course no permissions as it's not rooted.
So, no way to root my mobile without copying the files to the SD?
Thanks in advance
Joe
I dont know what you mean by internal sd - galaxy y 5360/6102 doesnt have internal sd - it uses a mico sd card to which you will find the slot if you take the cover off and look on the right hand side of the phone
place any files you want on the sd card either via card reader or usb cable
please note that questions should be asked in the question and answer section and NOT the general section

Thanks Marcus,
I did not know the mobile had no internal SD.
That's the kind of information that saves a lots of time and work!
Thanks again.

Ok,
I tried to use a Miscro SD on the GT-S5360 but there was no way to have it acccepted by the phone.
I formatted the Micro SD (Sandisk 2G) in many ways (full formatting) and it was mounted OK with all my other phones (Galaxy S, LG L5II, Huawei) but not for the Galaxy Y. I tried to format the card with the other Samsung too but it did not work..
I've read a lot around about the "blank SD" issue on many mobiles and tried some of the suggested tricks but with no luck.
So, assuming there is no way to have a MicroSD installed on the phone, I resume the original question:
- Is there any way to root the GT-S5630 without an SD card?
Thanks in advance
Joe
well unless your sd card slot is damaged there should be no reason why it shouldnt work
the sd card needs to be formatted in fat32
there best way to do it is to inset your sd card into your phone
goto phone settings
storage
unmount sd card (sd must be unmounted before you can format it)
format sd card
you can also format it via your pc using a card reader as long as its fat32 but its best to format it using the phone or format it again using the phone as sometimes cwm may have problems mounting the sd card if you use something else to format it
You might find universal root tools via google but the quickest most simple way is just to use a root zip file and flash it in recovery or cwm

Thanks Marcus, your replies are very quick .
I tried formatting the SD card FAT32 with different Allocation unit sizes, always full formatting, never quick.
The SD card is recognized as BLANK SD CARD (or unsupported filesystem) when inserted with the phone ON. The same occurs when I switch ON the phone with the SD card alredy inserted. The card is never mounted
The internal formatting functionality of the phone seems to be not working at all. The function FORMAT SD CARD is enabled but when launched it lasts just few seconds and nothing happens (the card is not mounted neither automatically nor by hand).
There could be some compatibility issues between the card and the phone and it could be worth to buy another SD to test the phone card reader again, but I'm not confident it will work.
Phone specs
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband: S5360XXMC2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XXMI1

allocation unit size is I think 16 kilobytes but just select default - quick format is fine if the card is not damaged
you can try using mini tool to delete the partition on the sd card and create a new one and format it to fat32
you can then try reformatting it on your phone after
Mini Tool Download

Thanks for your help Marcus,
I tried MiniTool, with both FAT and FAT32 (the card is a 2GB card) but the result is still the same: BLANK SD CARD.
I will try to buy a new one tomorrow and see if it makes any difference...

Ok I got a new MicroSD today and everything seems to work fine.

[Q] Issue with 64GB SD card in Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500

Hello
I own Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500 and it is rooted. I recently purchased a class 10 Sandisk Micro SD card with 64 GB capacity. I was very happy that I did but my happiness did not last long when I have come to know that 3rd party apps do not have write permission in Kitkat. After some research I was successful to make the SD card writable to 3rd party apps by modifying the permissions.xml file.
Everything seems to be fine at this time but it was not actually. The SD card when seen under storage in settings would show me that it is mounted with 62.5 GB capacity and 60 GB free. But when I try to browse the files in SD card, there are nothing. Apps saved in SD card do not open and I am also unable to capture images from camera to SD card storage.
I thought may be unmounting the SD card and mounting it back would work and it worked but after a while the same problem. My device shows that it has mounted an SD card but cannot access anything saved in it. So, I have to unmount and mount SD card every time and this is very much annoying.
Any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks you for your time.

Thank you for your reply.
Yes. It is Ex FAT format. Which format should I format it to? Ex FAT or just the FAT format.
It is not about applications. The card just gets undetected after some time and nothing can be accessed including music and images. I have to unmount it and mount again for the device to detect the SD card.
Format your SD Card on your phone its self. Go to settings, storage and than SD Card and format it.

[Q] Can 16GB internal memory Galaxy S5 use 128GB SD card?

The title pretty much says it all.
My wife has a Galaxy S5 with 16GB internal memory. When I put a 128GB miroSDHX card in it, the phone says the SD card is blank and refuses to mount it.
If I go into Settings>Storage, the only option under SD Card is Mount SD Card. If I tap that, it asks if I want to format the SD Card, If I tap that, I get a message like "preparing SD card" and a couple of seconds later, there is a notification in the title bar of the phone saying either "Blank SD Card" or "Damaged SD Card".
Smaller cards are mounted automatically.
The 128GB card is read just fine by a PC.
Is there something I am missing in getting the phone to recognize the large SD card?

According to gsmarena, the answer is Yes.
Memory
Card slot: microSD, up to 128 GB
Internal: 16/32 GB, 2 GB RAM

It just sounds like your card isn't formatted properly. Probably an unrecognized or corrupt filesystem. Or less likely, out of spec or damaged card. Unfortunately you didn't give any details as to the card model or verbatim error messages so we have nothing to go on.
The card should be formatted as FAT32, not NTFS or exFAT. Try formatting the card as FAT32 on your PC. Mount it on your phone, then reformat again it from the phone Settings menu. If you have ongoing difficulties, check the card for corruption with the chkdsk utility.

I will try formatting on my PC as FAT32, then.
There is no model number on the SD card or its packaging. Just SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-1. 128GB. Speed up to 48MB/s** 320X.
No error messages, either. Just what I quoted from the notifications bar about "Blank SD Card". And in Settings>Storage, there is just one entry for the SD Card: Mount SD Card. Tapping that launches a couple of quick notifications about the SD Card being prepared. Then the notification that the SD Card is blank.
If I pull down the notification bar and tap the Blank SD Card notification, I get a popup to format the card, with OK, Cancel, and a warning that all data will be erased. Tapping OK yields another quick notification about the SD Card being prepared and that is all. And the Blank SD Card notification returns.
*Edit* Just noticed that the PC reports the file system as exFAT. But my PC (Win 8 Pro) offers only exFAT and NTFS as format options.
..
Exfat should work no problem, I've got 64 GB class 10 that's formatted exfat and I've never had issues

Gave up on the 128GB.
A Samsung rep said that the problem was that I was using a Sandisk card and they are problematic with Samsung phones.
So I got a Samsung 64GB Class 10 card.
Same results. The phone reports that the card is blank or has an invalid filesystem. Tried to format on the phone. But no joy. The Samsung card is exfat.
So your phone might have problem with the card reader.

Reader itself is fine. Can mount a 16GB card, FAT32 (aha!).
Went to a VZW store last night.
They could not get the 64 or 128 card to mount. One of them had a Galaxy S5 and the 64 mounted on his phone, no problems whatsoever.
I had him format the card on his phone and tried it again on ours. Same story.
So, after a half hour on hold, I spoke with someone in VZW tech support who at first was adamant that the problem was with the card. I pointed out that the odds of getting two defective cards are extremely small. And asked if the card is defected, how did the card mount in the employee's phone?
His "solution": Factory reset and if the card still does not mount, call tech support back.
Wife said she is tired of the jerkaround.
She will use the 16GB FAT32 card.

SD card not working

Hello, I'm new here.
I'm using Moto X Style Indian version with Android Marshmallow from last 5 months. I'm using "SANDISK ULTRA microSD UHS-I CARD" with format as internal storage without any problem, but now suddenly a notification show up that "Insert your SD card", I even didn't remove my card since I put it once. I tried to insert my SD card to HTC phone, saying "Damaged SD card" with only option for format it. (I'm not able to take screenshots or click any pic)(SD card is still in my moto x style but in setting it shows "Not Inserted".)

Welcome to the world of adopted storage...
Try to power off the device, remove the card and reinsert it, then power back up. If that fails, either the card has failed or the encryption key has gotten corrupted or "lost". There isn't a lot you can do to save or resurrect it if your device doesn't see the card and unencrypt the data.
When a card is adopted as internal storage, it is encrypted and uses the ext4 filesystem, it will only work in the same device with the same key and cannot be read in any other device without formatting it back to FAT32 and wiping out all the data. There is some information here about reading the data with a Linux computer, if you have the appropriate card reader and can access the encryption key on the device.
Thanks for your reply @acejavelin,
I tried everything turn my phone off, eject card then reinsert it, still same error. Now what to do? Will I format my card with FAT32 by attach my card with PC? I know my data will not save... but I have no option.

Yes... Reformat it in a PC or in another device. Personally, I would not reuse the card, especially as adopted storage, since it can no longer be trusted.

Ok, I will also not use this card again with adopted storage. Thanks for your suggestion @acejavelin .
Seems my problem will be solved , but all my data will loss :crying:
Sounds like the problem is with your phone's SD card reader, not with the card itself. Other computers / phones will tell you the SD card is damaged/corrupted because they cannot read it (the card is encrypted), but that doesn't mean the card is actually damaged or corrupted.
You won't be able to extract your data from it unless you can get it to read the card again. I would try popping out the sim /sd card tray and shoving it back in many times, to see if eventually it will read (mine takes 2-3 tries before it will read)
If you can't get it to work you may need to contact Moto support to get a replacement under warranty (assuming you haven't unlocked the bootloader / voided the warranty)
Definitely try another card though if you have access to one, just to check and see if it will read a different card.
