Color OS Camera VS CM Camera(Examples) - ONE General

Color OS Camera sample
http://s24.postimg.org/s66in1305/IMG_20150512_134205.jpg
CM Camera
http://s23.postimg.org/lobcj026z/IMG_20150512_134220.jpg
Now, you people judge which is the better quality picture of the two.
For me, COLOR OS has natural colors but CM Camera gives a bit more punchier colors. Clarity is great on both.

How can we decide... it's not the SAME photo on a tripod, and for sure you focused a different point in each, so different exposure for sure...
Only clear difference, it's that Cm Camera have more saturated colors than the "natural" coloros camera..

Cm Camera looks better to me...

Also, the resolution has been reduced so the actual image compression can't be compared.
I reckon that you maybe used the modded camera next which increased saturation by default.
In all my comparisons there were no visible differences between the color os and cm camera
when equally setup on auto mode.

Second photo has increased saturation (see leaves) and contrast (see sky). That's the whole difference. Reduce those parameters and you will see no difference

The examples are kind of pointless. As many pointed out - not original size, not the same composition/focus point.
As for CM camera Saturation and contrast is increased, but it can be set accordingly (at least in CMNextMOD).

Less macro shots, more distant shots; let's see if detail can be resolved at a distance because macro makes it too easy. I am waiting for the official ICS to be out to show some side by side comparison against my other GB arc

Check my 1st link in post above. It seems at 100% zoom this images still seem compressed with smeared detail. The Sky has visible noise and smearing even in broad daylight. I'm getting the HTC One X when my cap is finished with the arc, I hope the photo quality is better than arc
I honestly don't expect the lack of detail or smearing to go away, I just think it's probably just a limitation of the camera; a minor improvement from ICS at best is optimistic. I tried lg camera pro, some minor arguable differences at 100% JPEG quality. It seems like the exmor R sensor has a flaw in daylight being unable to cope with brightness. I'd still like to see the oversaturation corrected at least, it's still present on the Xperia S picture samples I've seen.
Foliage looks terrible on the arc in bright lighting
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/12866_Camera_champions_head_to_head.php
arc is good for macro shots and night shots, anything else shows its weaknesses
We have to wait for the new ICS kernel and drivers, I think the beta was built on the GB kernel so the camera output is unchanged.
As for image quality in the above posts, it's quite simple.
Small pixels = easy saturation = low dynamic range. In order to live up to the marketing bull of low light performance, all highlights are blown.
Small pixels = more noise. In order to live up to the marketing bull of backside illumination, extremelly aggressive noise reduction is applied.
So what could be a decent (though not exceptional) camera, it is now crippled by marketing decissions that the average consumer will never notice.
Since the average consumer will probably not upgrade to ICS, I hope that Sony will re-work the camera firmware in ICS and make proper use of the sensor.
I agree. The over saturation is its biggest problem, that and purple lens flare. Even stopping down the ev doesn't fix the saturation problem in sunlight.

I am even more troubled by the loss of detail due to noise reduction.
It is really frustrating to know that the detail was there but washed away. If only they could put a setting for noise reduction strength.
ICS official
i flashed my ard yesterday and one i know for sure, on GB pics weight 1-1.6MB and now 2-2.8MB
So jpeg compression level has changed for better, but still very strong denoising...
Xperia ray pics post ICS update
Can anybody post pics taken with xperia ray after ics update?
i have 2.3.4 and the pics are highly compressed. just want to see if that is removed in the update.

How about wide color
So, what is the use of a wide color gamut capable display if the camera still shoots sRGB jpg?! I have not found any info on the color space profile of Note 8 jpegs and videos, can anyone chime in?

Google photos auto
Now, this is by far not the best *quality* photos, but it does show off the functionality quite well. I took this photo of a room in my apartment with absolutely no lights on other than some light leaking into the hallway behind me from a neighboring room, and a pure red heat lamp for a tank (pictured). I went full manual, mounted the camera with some objects on a table, and set it to a 10 second shutter, thinking that I wouldn't be able to pull off holding it by hand. Then I held it by hand. These are the two photos I got (one braced on a table, one by hand) with a 10 second shutter in a DARK room (the braced one is zoomed in).
Here's a shot of that same room from out in the hallway where there's a little light (so you can see about how dark it is).
What happened to the scalable function between 0-100% when using photo filters like Vignette and Stardust etfc? Gone?

Mine to even in really good lighting, using highest resolution.
Few observations after a month of use:
Picture quality overall is great, however the stock app tends to overblow the highlights in high contrast scenes. This is the effect of the small sensor size and it's prominent on all cellphones, however both Pixel 2 and iPhone X I've tested don't have that issue. However, installing and using the Google camera port helps the issue dramatically, so it's the HDR algorithm employed in the stock app, not the actual sensor.
Stock camera app is, however, both faster and more reliable in terms of snapping every day photos. Furthermore stock app has marginally less noise than Google Camera, but it also captures marginally less details. Stock camera also has less saturation and sharper gradients than Google Camera, likely a product of the algorithm as well.
The telephoto camera is decidedly worse than the wide angle one, even in bright light. You're trading off the dynamic range for zoom, and it's not just the difference in the lenses.
Lightroom HDR raw files (40mb 3.2MP image that contains 10 bit of colour) are mind-blowing. As an owner of full-frame Canon 6D I was blown away by the colour retention in Lightroom Camera app. On a DSLR you'd absolutely have to use bracketing to get those colours (although you'd get a 20 MP image), it's very impressive that a cellphone can do that. If only it shot out a 12 MP raw file.
Overall Note 8 has a very versatile camera with awesome picture quality, but certain scenes require he use of Google Camera for HDR+ algorithm to get the best results.

Google Camera with HDR+ comparison and thoughts

U11 Camera for still photos is (probably?) the best in class right now, but not without flaw that is overexposure.
As soon as the Modded HDR+ GC has become available I have decided to compare some shots with Stock camera w/HDR and Google Camera w/HDR+ enabled.
Here are some comparisons and my opinions.
Lowlight
http://imgur.com/2ziArQB
With Google Cam overexposure and blown out highlights are no longer an issue. However, the details in the shadow area of the low light image will get smudged out thanks to the noise reduction and/or become too dark.
on Stock HTC Sharpening is harsher than GC when 100% zoomed in but not as much as Sammy. The color on stock app is much more vibrant as well, but that comes with noisy image.
As a photographer I'd prefer lower noise image, but for smartphone camera that is not a very important thing comparing to, say, details in the dark area.
Overall Exposure and Details
http://imgur.com/Rqjk2hL
GC did a great job keeping all the details in highlight areas while stock app blown them to bits.
Colors, yet again HTC stock is punchy and vibrant on shadow areas while GC is a tad bit duller.
Close up
http://imgur.com/D7HEkbR
HTC, as usual, produce much more vibrant colors and more sharpened image while highlight areas are blown out.
It all comes down to your taste, people who like "Natural" tone will prefer GC while snap and go type better stick to HTCs'.
for me I prefer GC by the day and HTC stock by night as GC will give more room in image editing.
Basically, short squeeze for stock app, long squeez for Google Cam for me!

Preferred Setting
Config for HDR+: Pixel 2017 ZSL HDR+
HDR+ Parameters: Default or higher (not much difference but longer process time)
Final jpg quality HDR+: default(95) or higher, little differences
For me, Google does a better job in low-light, my bathroom.
Clearer and more details, look at the spay can on the right at the back.
But I do like the greens produced by HTC Cam, Google pink/reds are better, all comes down to personal preference.

Google's HDR+ does great job in extreme HDR situations , but for my eyes HTC's HDR boost does greater job keeping everything sharp , Google just destroyes every detail with noise reduction
Check the link for comparison

I know Pixel camera better but I've read all reviews on net and youtube and found that it always got over saturation during at low light or indoor environment like the sample provided from #2 if you view it carefully, you see a yellow cast in the whole photo with Pixel.
Indeed, U11 offers a natural tone overall, not Pixel in my opinions though HTC color might be a bit vibrant. If Pixel white balance isn't going wrong, yes it always perform better result. Good to know there is a modded google HDR+ now, donno if the yellow tone problem fixed or not.
U11 still got some advantages like OIS and dual pixel focus which is important to me too. Wish we'll have modded U11 camera in the future.
EDIT:
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-hdr-ported/
It's glad that we can use Pixel HDR+ now on all SD820/821/835 devices without root. It's Google camera 4.4 apk and I've installed it on my U11(no root atm) and it works both HDR+ photo and 4K recording, no crash no FC. So if you prefer the style on Google HDR+ this is your way to go together with the benefit of OIS and dual pixel focus over Pixel phone.
Will OIS and pixel focus work on the google camera?

Hmm I was really steady , I have very steady hands and I can take 1s shutter , and I really tried it multiple times to make sure if it's really does reduce the noise and smudge the details or if it's just one bad shot , but actually all of them are the same
I really like it in extreme HDR situations though , so if HTC's upcoming camera update didn't boost the camera even more then maybe I will use gcam for really extreme HDR situations
I have tried it in broad day light and the dynamic range is really improved.
I will try it tonight but if it fixes the overexposure, it will really be the ultimate camera phone.
stock app
Pixel app
Edit : Now tried in the night, the difference is even greater. With the HTC U11 camera app, all the details are burnt near light sources, while it is not the case with the Pixel camera app.
stock app
Pixel app
For me it is clear, the Pixel app will replace the stock app for my pictures. The HTC U11 camera module with the Google Pixel software, I think we have the best possible camera on a phone.

I strongly disagree.
Look at this window which is aproximately 150 meters far from me. With the Pixel app, I can clearly see he is watching TV. I am impressed. With the stock app, I see... nothing.
And with the Pixel, I don't find any detail loss.

To me both apps got pros and cons. Stock cam tend to over exposure and in the opposite way google cam like to under exposure.
It really depends the atmosphere you're shooting and maybe your matter of personal preferences. In general, I like stock a bit over exposure to make the photo brighter except in some cases the high light area got washed out. Noise reduction in google camera is better, stock cam got many noise.

Sharpness is poor for anything other than static objects
I'm trying out the Google Camera Port to see if there's any improvement, but otherwise I'm really disappointed in the lack of sharpness when there is any movement involved

Try using pro mode - sport
Tried it just now, pictures come out far too grainy and dark, because of the high ISO to compensate high shutter speed
I could adjust the settings, but I didn't want to get into the realm of adjusting all settings to take a quick snap
In the exact situation the camera is great in a well lit situation but anything other than that I need the subject to be completely still.
Disappointed I may send it back and get the Pixel 2 XL.
I played around with my friends Pixel 2XL, tested side by side shots, it isn't much better at all
The Google Camera Port on the U11+ is better, but only slightly with respect to motion.
In my testing so far;
- Less motion blur with Google Camera Port, but it's still there
- Definitely better detail with the U11+ camera
- Less blown out highlights with Google Camera Port
- Quicker shutter speed with U11+ camera all round

Hi, it's the port of the camera from the Pixel 2, you can find it here;
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-hdr-ported/
There is a bug- it force closes in slow motion mode
I've been using it more, and I've found that the Google Camera seems to have a kind of 'make- up' effect to people's skin. People's skin looks unnatural, almost too good. It doesn't look BAD on the HTC camera, it just looks real
Please let me know how you get on
