So, is throttling and overheating kind of the norm with this thing? - G3 General

I just bought this phone yesterday (Best Buy, no contract or anything, just 400$ straight up) for AT&T. Already out of the box one thing I notice is that the screen has a grid pattern to it from the digitizer... okay well that's not a big deal I guess in normal operation. On the other hand, I tried doing some filming while driving the car to work. I set the brightness at 100% initially. When I got done driving, the brightness was at 85%. It lowered 15% in my short commute (it took me 10-15 mins to get to work...). Plus the top of the phone near the on/off switch was fairly hot. Is this the norm with this model, or is this just a lemon?
Best Buy has a good return policy so I'm not particularly worried. I am a bit annoyed because I bought an Otterbox Defender from Amazon that I chose expedited shipping on (I wanted it on before I even used the phone to prevent any incidents). If this thing already throttles just doing some filming, I can't quite imagine it doing well inside of a case, with the GPS on while playing music in GA weather. I guess I'll return both today...

I would say it is the norm. i do the same thing where i record my commute home which is also about 15 to 20 minutes.
i can also say that it happened with my HTC Evo, Galaxy s2, S3, G2 and now G3. they all got HOT while recording video for 20 minutes straight.
I also never usually run my screen at 100% brightness, most of the time its on auto or around 85%
Edit:
I addition, my wife's iPhone gets hot as well while recording video, especially HD. Its pretty common since vid recording is a pretty intensive activity internally

Hmm... does this hinder you during normal operation, such as driving with the GPS on while playing music?

just disable the throttling and do a hardware mod with a copper shim . you can find those on this forum . i now have NO issues with heat or throttling

I'm also a bit disappointed with the overheating, specially when gaming.
On the other hand the phone is quite good, gorgeous screen, fast, and probably the best price vs spec ratio.

They have added it and screen brightness is dimming and cpu power is reduced. When thiss happens You are warned in notification in upper screen part.

This is the norm of LG phones in general.
You need to live in ALASKA to get the best performance of this phone.
It is a good phone though,

Device lower back getting warm?

Does the lower part of your device back get warm after using it for 5-10 minutes web browsing or navigation or just fiddling? When holding in the hand you can clearly feel this warmth, but there is no overheating or burning (at least not now during the winter
its warm most of the time , but i am using this device so i guess it would generate some heat .
and i notice it even more when i have the device set to ROUTER sharing internet , then its even wamrer , depending on how far away the laptop is from the HD2 .
but it hasnt burned up , "YET " ............
/T
Mine gets really warm, no 3g here and a fairly stable gprs, so the phone isn't constantly signal hunting.
But it gets even worse if you charge it at the same time, and in fact when in the van and running a 1 amp ciggy lighter supply, the phone sometimes even says that there is not enough current to keep the phone running the current applications, and to shut some down, not good when bluetooth is needed, and running satnav, auto data updates then seem to be too much.
I dont know what current rating the htc car adaptor is, but if you buy a cheap crappy one from the carphone warehouse, i believe they are only rated at 500ma, the same as thier mains mini usb chargers
Big screen to keep powered up..........but gorgeous to boot!!!
The antenna is located in the lower back. On extended use it'll get warmer. You can also note this when making a long phonecall with phone in hand or using the internet for long time. If you charge it at the same time also the battery gets warm.
Cant say ive noticed it much with my hd2 but my diamond used to get really hot where the antenna was.
In the first days after I bought the phone, I've kept the screen on by mistake... It was in the leather case that comes along and I didn't realize it.
After about 3 or 4 hours, I've realized that the phone was rather hot. Removing it from the case revieled that keeping the screen on for a longer time will not only waste your battery, but even turn the phone in a frying pan.
You could test this if you browse some lame HTML web page, that doesn't have any scripts running in the background...
I'm not gonna answer the poll, purely because it doesn't have an appropriate answer for me.
The back of my HD2 gets warm when I use it intensively, like browsing the internet for 1/2 an hour via wifi, but doesn't get even slightly warm when I'm using it as a phone.
Anyway, it tells you in the manual that the phone will get warm when in use, so it's not as if no-one didn't know about it. We've all read the manual right?
Have you guys never used a smartphone before? It's perfectly normal that they get warm when you use them, especially with WiFi.

My point exactly.
However, it's more like a HD2 property to get very warm, almost hot when the huge screen is on for a longer period: this doesn't happen on other smartphone.
Then again, this could be taken as normal, given the screen size...
In conclusion, there's no need to warry!
P.S.: in case the phone is charging and the battery is way too hot, there is a feature that will automatically stop the charging process in order to prevent the battery from damaging (according to the manual johncmolyneux mentioned): good thing!

My Touch HD used to get a LOT hotter than the HD2. This is warm at best.
The Touch HD gets a lot hotter. The iPhone as well. Again, smartphones do get warm, that's perfectly normal.
haha.. it's an extra accessory for cooking.... There's even a secret setting to setup the temperature... To get serious, i think this is perfectly normal. I don't think it gets more than 35 degrees Celcius. I noticed it after hard use. Don't forget 10 years ago, 1Ghz processors with 10 times less power needed passive heatsinks 10 times the size of HD2..
For the iPhone, there's even an app to make it a hand warmer!
But I guess it drains the battery quite fast... and surfing or playing games certainly gives the same effect.
Problem is that it gets warm when charging too... there doesn't seem to be any thermal cutoff or battery full cutoff. I believe the excess heat when leaving the HD2 plugged in over one night is what killed my HD2.
The heat in mine stopped the touchscreen working until the phone cooled down so I've sent it back for replacement. A bit annoying as I was using the phone all the time so it got warm often. In some cases, I'd say it got hot, especially as it's summer here in Australia.

[POLL] Is there anything wrong with your G2?

There seems to be so many complaints from people and them replacements for their G2. Are a lot of people plagued by these problems? Do you think you have a perfect G2? (No dead pixels, no loose hinge, no random reboots, good battery, etc). I'm curious to see how many people actually needed to get a replacement before they got a 'good' phone.
I have had my G2 for about five days now, and the only problem I have is with the hinge. At first, I just thought people were complaining that the hinge would not snap-close/was easy to open, but after playing with he phone almost non-stop for the past five days I've noticed that it has actually gotten worse. It seems almost floppy now, and I fear that after a few months with this particular phone I will eventually be able to make it appear to talk. I'm going to go to T-mobile sometime in the next week and get a replacement, bu I'm curious as to what the chances are that I'll get a new phone with the same problem.
Aside from the hinge problem, I am far more than happy with the phone, bloatware and all. I'm hopeful that we will eventually have root and I look forward to keeping this phone for at least a couple of years.
No hardware problems. Just software problems which is obviously happening to everyone. I'm fine with it. Best phone I've had. And I've had em all from iphone to blackberry to android.
Sent from my HTC Vision G2
No software problems here, and don't yet have a good sense of the battery, but this hinge is driving me nuts.
Also, you're missing at least one more option in the poll: "I have a problem but I can live with it."
I have had my g 2 for 24 hours and love it. fast and smooth and no broken parts. I travel and I have had excellent signal. have only charge my battery 1 time in the last 24 hours. coming from blackberry this device beats it hands down
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
when sending or receiving picture messages, the phone resizes the picture to 12kb.. its ridiculous! i could send 1mb pictures with a goddamn Razr 4 years ago!.. anyone know how this can be fixed? also the voice recognition is useless.. the hardware keyboard is a bit flimsy, but i try to not use it much for that reason.. the battery doesn't last that long if you have "background sync" or whatever its called turned on. i turned all that crap off so now the battery actually lasts
I have had mine for about a week. Two things mildly annoy me: the speakerphone is tinny and when I place the phone screen up, my carefully customized mp3 ringtones sound weird. Two, the battery life seems to barely eke by to a day and this is without even getting on to the GPS and Bluetooth bandwagon. Just HSPA/EDGE surfing. Heck, I barely even use it to make calls. An extremely minor minor irritant is that when I tap on the app drawer (I am using LauncherPro) there seems to be a millisecond lag before the apps zoom out. I find that a bit clunky, but no serious complaints.
No big complaints about mine. I love it. Best phone ever.
Few small quirks/bugs I've noticed.
Trackpad moves itself when in bright sunlight or in a car and sun goes behind trees.
I've had one random reboot. But it was while streaming Pandora with headphones in my car with no A/C on a 95 degree day. Phone was quite hot and rebooted itself.
MMS slideshow sucks though an update should fix that.
Hinge, battery life, speed and data connection are all excellent in my opinion.
That's about it... I came from a Cliq and could not be happier.
After 24 hours the worst thing that I have had happen to me is the phone rattles a bit when it vibrates.
Otherwise so far it seems to be the best phone I've owned. I don't even know if I'll root it!
I messed up the news and weather app because I always get a force close now. I don't know where I went wrong.
I've replaced the clock app and it should be fine for now... using it with tasker if I had clock open and change orientation, id get the geniewidget error force close.
Don't like mms slideshow. Rare random reboot. I'm still happy with this phone though.

Well I will have had my phone for two weeks on Sunday (10/17/2010). I just sold my Nexus one on Ebay this week. So yes I like this baby a lot. Its faster than the N1, I love the design. I have had one random reboot, my hinges are fine. I think it's the nature of the design, not a defect. They're suppose to be loose. Plus in actual use when are you going to hold a five hundred dollar upside down. If I have one gripe it maybe the screen coming from the n1, I'll miss them black levels. But overall it's an nice upgrade. Love stock android.
ive had mine for a few days now. coming from an N1, then to a samsung vibrant, now to this.
absolutely love it, my only dislikes are not having a dedicated number row on the keypad, and charge port placement. but as far as the hinge goes, i can lay in bed with it upside down and still text. no issues there. i just cant wait until i can get a new rom on it to adjust the track pad illumination like i had with cyanogen on my N1
but no real "problems"
I've had my G2 for a week now, and I absolutely love it. It's the first smartphone I've ever bought new, so just getting to unbox it was a treat. I haven't found anything wrong with the phone at all. Only gripe is that the led light doesn't blink when there's a new message/call. A light around the track pad flashes instead, but it is almost impossible to see except in the dark. Otherwise I love everything about my G2.

I've had mine for 2 weeks now. Everything is fine, keyboard gap I can cope with, it only happens when phone is held upside down.
I'm loving the speed of this thing.

Got mines on pre-order and i do have the upside down hinge situation but its far from a problem for me since I don't use my phone that way and don't know anyone who does. Phones is perfect through and through, awaiting root!
I have several problems with mine.
1) Autorotate is a FAIL, doesn't seem to work at all, so I just have it disabled.
2) Reception is even bigger FAIL. It can't get a signal in midtown NYC very well, while my junky Nokia 6030 has full signal almost everywhere. It can't even hold a WiFi signal in my house very well, while any other device does. (802.11g).
I had one replacement phone shipped to me by T-Mobile with a very defective hinge (When you opened it up, it would wobble like it wasn't seated properly) and I'm waiting on my second replacement (or 3rd phone) to arrive via UPS. Odds are I'm going to send them all back, this phone is a pretty big dissapointment for me.
Also I'm not a huge fan of the physical keyboard, I thought I'd use it a lot more than I do (which is almost never)
I regret being an "early adopter" for sure this time. It's been a huge waste of time, money, and trips to the UPS store for returning the phone (I pre-ordered the phone from T-Mobile)
1) Not a problem, just a personal thing: Wish keyboard had another row. Coming from Tilt2 I was used to 5 rows. This one seems to have too much going on.
2) I swithched to T-Mo for this phone. Don't know anyone else w/ T-Mo in my area. They advertise I am in a strong 3G area and very close to a HSDPA+ area. I only get Edge speeds. Even with a very strong full bar, it stays on edge. Using Speedtest.net I avg. 32kbs. Using my Tilt2 on AT&T I avg 1500kbs. Customer Service tried to convince me (in a very friendly voice) that I would be very happy with the much slower speeds. They are wrong.
Overall, I love the device, but will return it Monday. I may wait a few weeks to see if any radio updates become widespread that may help. Otherwise, I will have to go with a Sprint EPIC. I wish there were more quality QWERTY Android handsets on the market.
Mine actually works pretty well. I have the hinge issue, but thats it. Really I almost accept the hinge as being a non-spring loaded hinge, which makes it kinda cool that it doesn't need it.
If it did have something locking it into place, thats just something to break later on.
No software issue's here.
Hardware: No issues other than the crappy external speaker. My hinge is fairly tight and I have had the phone since Sept. 30th. I have to hold it by the screen and wiggle it quite a bit before the keyboard drops. Really not an issue.
Software: My phone gets in a state where it is on a black screen and will not respond to power button input. I have to remove the battery for the phone to respond to power button input. It has happened 3 time since the 30th, once on the first day with the phone being straight stock (no apps installed by me). It happens if the phone is left in sleep mode for a long time. If I am constantly using the phone as I am most of the time, I do not see this problem. I am half convinced that it is some of the embedded apps that run in the background all the time. IE: My Account, Photobucket, Finance and all that jazz. When I had my app killer set to thirty minutes I did not see the issue. Now that I have it kill apps when the screen turns off it doesn't kill the apps when left asleep for an extended period and the bug has reared its' ugly head twice since then.
Other than that I love this phone coming from the nexus one. Better data connectivity, better gps lock, way better screen, way better camera, ****tier audio recording quality.
Can't really complain.
I got mine on Oct 1. As far as I can tell, it's perfect. It rebooted once when I had been wandering around our building at work checking the coverage and running speed tests. I'd probably run the xtreme speedtest +30 times. Its been rock solid since and before.
I have no problems and no complaints.

Z3c just arrived!

Well My Z3c just arrived and boy is it a snappy little thing. I am coming from a 2013 Moto X, which I would describe as a pretty smooth overall experience. The Z3c I would describe as a blazing fast little monster.
I purchased the phone from B&H (and am in no way affiliated with them). Their service was fast and smooth with 2 day shipping and no tax/shipping fees in my state.
Screen is really good, with decent viewing angles and nice colors (I know sounds amateurish but how else to describe a screen?). Colors do seem to "pop" a little more on my Moto X but otherwise they are pretty comparable in pixel density and size.
Something that does not get mentioned much is the Cell/LTE Radio. I have noticed that this one seems to pick up a stronger signal than either my Moto X or Moto G. My house is located in an area that I typically hover around 99 dbm 6 asu with the G and X (on AT&T through Cricket Wireless). The Z3c seems to hover around 97 dbm 9 asu. From what was described to me by an electronics engineer, signal strength in dbm tends to work off an exponential curve. From what he told me every 3 dbm is an almost 100% signal strength increase/decrease. So the Z3c seems to be performing pretty well compared to my current phones.
Form factor is pretty blocky, definitely getting a case for this phone where as my Moto X and G were fine naked. The 2013 Moto X and G are definitely standouts as probably some of the best formed phone bodies I have come across.
Primary functions I have tested so far are the calling/data and wifi tethering which all performed flawlessly.
currently have these coming in from amazon, will update once they arrive

I noticed that as well... maybe a case will solve that, but I rarely keep volume at max anyways. Another thing I noticed was the screen "feels" thin, seems to flex a touch more than my other phones. Definitely motivates me to get a good piece of tempered glass on it asap!

I'm coming from a iPhone4 so it's built pretty solid.
But the Z3C is just gorgeous! Love the vibrant screen.
I've ordered a ultra shield tempered glass off eBay for the front. Also tempered glass one for the back too, might help with the vibrations of the volume.
Still got the plastic that comes with the phone on both back and front don't want any scratches!
Noticed the battery seems to be dropping very rapidly... as in 15% an hour from normal web browsing. Wonder if I should discharge and recharge it fully?

it usually takes a charge or two for a battery to settle down, but higher discharge is also partly to do with how the phone comes configured -- far too many apps doing far too much in the background. Check the battery thread for info on how people got things under control. With my typical usage I reliably get up to 3 days standby and 6-8 SOT. It's weird to not have to charge a phone every night.

Beware!!! Daydream vr

Hey everyone so I decided to try the daydream VR since my friend has It. I spend about 45 minutes immerse in the experience and all of my sudden my phone shut off. I took it it out and the phone was extremely hot!! I thought maybe it was dead. So I plugged it in. And it dint do anything at all.. at this point I thought of the worse and thought my phone might have overheated and fried the internal. My friend suggested putting the phone next to the AC to cool down. And about 10 minutes of cooling the phone actually turned on..
All I can say is beware of long periods of time in the VR. I for sure will not be using this..
I posted on this as well the Daydream vr Pixel combo, is dangerous to say the least.
Mine heated up so bad in 5 minutes. i could feel the heat radiate to my face through the unit.
I had to pay for my Daydream a few days ago returning it may be my best option.

I agree it doesn't sound great, i doubt it will blow up on your face as the phone will self-power down long before then.
What case are you using out of interest? A thick silicon/rubber case will have a massive impact on the thermal performance on the phone. It will have the same effect as placing something over your computer fan outlet, eventually the system will shut down as the temp builds up.
On the bright side, I haven't seen any mention of any extreme thermal issues (phones will get warm when pushing VR content) so hopefully it is an isolated issue or is a software issue that can be patched.
Other than melting your face, how is the daydream experience?
Lol it is pretty nice,i found an app on the play store.
That had me in some girls bedroom while she was getting dressed.lol I was looking all around the bedroom.
Skydiving,bowling,etc.
Warning you will get dizzy.
That's a shame that it heats up that bad considering the phone has good thermals on its own. But it makes sense with the fabric insulating the phone keeping the heat from leaving efficiently.

There is no fabric that insulates the phone. The phone sits in plastic with rubber stand offs that space out the phone so it has a gap all around the phone.
I take my OtterBox commuter car off my phone when I use daydream and while the phone does get very hot I have not had a overheat message yet out has the phone shut down.

Remember guys, any and all devices you leave the "light" on will get hot. Feel your TVs, even the LED get warm - hot.
While you're using the VR you've got the screen on and are taxing the Pixel in an enclosed visor. Plus your head is probably hot, esp if you're watching the prawn stars

yeah I tried my Note in the Gear VR (came free with it) was an ok experience but my god did the phone get hot, they are pushing the performance of these devices to the limits so it should be expected they get warm, but then there is a point where you should be asking if it was actually thought through, if the phone is overheating then that is a problem and something that should have been seen before now, but if the phone is just generally running hot I would see it as something normal when you are taxing the CPU and GPU to the limits. but if it is running hot to the point of shutting down something is wrong there.
Since this is the phone they used to build Daydream VR (only certified phone) I am sure they tested extensively. This maybe the reason for the low power version of the 821 instead of the higher performance version. The phone actually shutting off I beleive means a defective phone. Unless you just missed all the heat warning I would call Google and get a RMA before your battery goes bad permanently.
Even gear VR overheats it's just the compromise of the mobile versions for now.

What if you didn't use a case, and maybe put a spacer behind the phone so when you close it there is a space behind the phone for it to breathe....and stay cooler? Can't wait to try the headset out when it comes.
Sent from my Pixel XL using XDA-Developers mobile app
I had read that Daydream on the Pixels has an exception to the thermal throttle normally enforced in order to achieve the required 60FPS for the scene, therefore enabling it to push a little harder than most other 3D applications and inevitably getting hotter. As mentioned earlier it was probably all subject to extensive testing by Google and aids in the explanation to the lower clock speeds they have chosen.
I'm fairly confident that Google was confident the heat is acceptable and considering it's the latest and greatest from Qualcomm the only alternative would be some heat pipes and heatsinks sticking out of the phone.
Same deal with the Samsung vr
Got mine, got through the tutorial and it was already very warm.
It is nothing I can picture me using it too much anyway.
I have the Pixel XL with me almost always but I am not bringing the viewer with me all that often.
I've tried just holding the Pixel XL against the VR Headset and leaving the flap down. Seems to keep temperature down a bit.
I was testing it out that way but ended up on a phone call after about 30 minutes of use. (watched about 5 or 6 movie trailers in 4k and 360).
Phone was only warm to the touch. Temperature in house usually kept around 75 degrees.
Anyone else tried this.?

G5's quality makes me disappointed at LG again

1. Battery life is incredibly bad
-The battery life drains from 100% to 10% just in 8-10hrs. No gaming or no heavy duty in the background.
-The brightness level has set at 50% or under, and the SOT was never more than 30 minutes
2. The power button is too weak
-It was broken after a few days of out of the box.
-During that time, sometimes it works, but sometimes not
-After few months of use, it was great. It was competely dead.
**I did a research that a big number of G5 user has reported this is a common issue. Thanks to LG
3.The USB port is flimsy
-The fast charging function won't work probaly anymore after a few months of normal use.
-It keeps popping up an annoying power supply notification on the bar while there was nothing doing with the port.
**It's another common issue, but seems this case is not as serious as the power button one.
4.The texture of the phone is really hard to tell me that the phone was made out of matal
-Yes, I know there is something called coating, but that feeling is so horrible, just like other plastic phones, so why didn't they just make a plastic phone like G3,G4 instead of this one?
5. Image retention makes the screen like a crap
-2K QHD IPS LCD, all these labels just meant to give the good impression to the consumer. Well, once they found out how creepy is the watermark produced on the screen by leaving the screen on the same image just a little while, they could regret to buy a phone that should have an astounding quality of screen, which actually worse than the predecessor, G3.
6.The edges of the body just like a blade
-I know this state is too exaggerated, but I have already ran out of words to describe that bloody cheap feeling.
7.It's easy to get throttled
When everytime I restart the phone, texting message, watching youtube videos, surfing internet, I just like holding a warmer. Thanks to LG for giving me a free warmer.
Anyway, after the G3, G4 boot looping trash and this crap, I will never buy a single LG phone again.
I have been using my H850 for one year now and don't have any of the issues you describe: Yes, the build quality of Samsung and Sony is ahead of LG, but it still works like on the first day and still has good battery runtime. No ghosting at all, nothing.
You got a bad phone, simply get it replaced.
Regarding the "coated metal", I couldn't care less: For me a phone is a tool, not a status symbol and surely not a piece of jewelry. If you see things differently, buy something like a SGS8 or HTC U11. It's not that you cannot recognize this when buying the phone.
No 2017 highend phone I'm aware of has SD card support, a replacable battery and an unlockable bootloader. So I'll use my G5 until it falls apart.

Same here ... judging by your username I'm guessing you also got the "1. FC Köln" version
But I agree - I don't have ANY of the issues you mentioned @cuepudding, and I've also had my H850 for a year now.
The only thing that is making me regret that I ever got it is the lack of custom rom support. We don't have many choices and the ones that are around either don't update often or have/will stop being maintained.
The phone itself and the quality are great though :good:

Actually, I do live in Cologne  But I have the regular H850, though.
So far, the only issues I've had with my H860 are that the metal is quite soft (my phone fell from like 15cm into a wooden table and the side now has a dent) and also the camera glass, which is really REALLY scratched on both sides (and I keep my phone in my pocket 97% of the time).

I have used LG optimus G , LG optimus 3D ,LG G2 and now LG G5 never had any quality issues. I think what you got is duplicate of LG G5 . The only part i regret in LG G5 is battery life other than that its a beautiful phone with super fast performance, I moved back to android from Iphone 6.
I'm not that satisfied with G5 either! Already had to send it in due to broken GPS. Also having the screen retention, but they denied changing display. Then battery life isn't that great, although I know it depends on my various things. Last but not least having big trouble using WLAN and BT at same time, but I'm not sure if it's more related to Android 7.0 than LG G5. All in all other phones of mine performed quite better at their times...
I also am happy with my LG G5, only fault i have is battery life but I carry a spare and just change when it gets too low, otherwise the phone does everthing a phone should. If i wantvto play games i use my PC or XBone S.

I have mine for a year. GPS broke few times, image retention (I use Blue Light Filter to fix it so it's a non issue for me now) and the camera glass got so many scratches I had to replace it. Oddly enough, the 2.5$ glass I got from China holds much better than the original glass!! No scratches.
But... The 2 main reasons I keep this phone:
1. The camera(s) is outstanding. And the camera software is by far the best in the market.
2. Removable battery. I always carry a spare battery in my bag. Never worried about battery life.
I don't like that the screen isn't flat but I can live with it.
