[Q] How to sim free my s4..? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I've recently upgraded my gone and tried to give my mum my old s4 but it's sim locked. The handset itself is on the EE network n she would like it to be on Vodafone. The phone just asks for an unlock code when a vodaphone sim is in.
The device is a s4 i9505 currently rooted
Android version - 5.0.1 genuine
Baseband - i9505xxuhoa7
Kernel - 3.4.0-3996895
SE - SEPF_GT-i9505_5.0.1_0002
Build - LRX22C.I9505XXUHOA7
If you could point me in the right direction in how to unlock would be appreciated..! I'm guessing maybe a modem change could fix this..?
Thanks in advance

In the future please use the search engine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2282683 should fulfill your request. Especially important is to read the last five pages, as critical information is found within them that is NOT on the first post of the thread.

That method does not work for me as it doesn't show the on off options in the secret menu..?

Because you didn't read the last five pages of the thread, as instructed.

flash back to original

Hi all, good evening to all.
Need to fix my issue as soon as possible because need to unlock the phone and use it out of country. My AT&T Galaxy S4 (SGH i337) on Android Verion 4.2.2, Baseband Verison i337 ucuamf3, Build # JDQ39.i337 ucuamf3, Kernel Version i337 ucuamf3.
Spoke to AT&T customer service for few times regarding on the unlock code for the phone, confirmed i have the correct unlock code for the phone, and am had tried 6 times by using the same code was provided by AT&T, unfortunately every time i tried keep saying invalid number.
The phone was flashed one time by myself but can't remember which method i used but was found in this site somewhere.
Today went to AT&T store, a very nice sale person told me because the phone was unable to get unlock because it was flashed, he can tell when the phone reboot itself it has a "unlock lock simple" and "custom" word on the screen. He told me the only way to have the phone unlock is have the phone flash back to original by using ODIN 3.0.7 and ODIN Flash of MF3.
Can anyone please tell me above is right programs to have my Galaxy S4 flash back to original? If they are the right programs, where i can get them and step by step instructions to flash my phone.
Need help badly, thanks in advance

You need to know way more information than can be posted in a single reply. The best thing for you to do is read the "pinned" threads in the general and Q & A sections. Those threads will provide you with the information you need to know about your phone and answer the questions you have. If you try to rush things, you will end up with an unusable phone. Good luck.

Canadian (fido) S4 and new ROM install ?

Hi guys, sorry for asking this, I know it is probably mentioned but I have spent the last 2 hours in this forum for various interests, including my galaxy gear and my eyes are hurting right now...lol
So before I attempt something and make a mistake because I missed something, I figured I ask straight to the point...
I am on the latest 4.3 OTA update on my fido S4.
I am interested to possibly flash the Rom to another one that is clean (without all the stock apps) and gain access also to bluetooth tether which is right now not available through fido.
If, this is an option with another ROM (which I am hoping it is)
So is a ROM available ? That can be flashed over the latest update ?
I found some threads but they were referring to already rooted phones etc...I am just not sure where I stand with the latest update, so I would really appreciate some info.
Thanks.
I have a Fido S4 on MDJ(4.2.2). I rooted and unlocked(using RegionLock away). If I flash a newer rom will I see a significant speed difference or performance boost?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure you can not unlock phone using region lock away, but on MDJ you can with secret menu, provided you never updated to mg1. Besides 4.2.2 Fido and before, was not region locked at all.
Maybe now with 4.3 it is. Did not check and can't be bothered looking for European sim card.
To answer main question. No! If you factory reset phone you will, but that's only temporary, which is why newbies keep saying it's faster and better with every firmware.
Sent from my GT-I9505G
I am not the first to claim I unlocked with RegionLock away. I inserted a T-Mobile sim and a Bell sim, and it did not ask for an unlock code. Before I ran RegionLock away, when I inserted a T-Mobile sim, it did ask for unlock code. Also, many people say the secret menu unlock doesn't work for Fido and/or screws up something.
Oh, what's that formula for POST COUNTS and NEWBIES again?
Hey guys, checking in again...
Sorry for the question, don't want to be flamed but there are A LOT of posts about different versions and I really do not want to screw up.
So :
Canadian fido S4 on 4.3 over the air update. Can I still root ? Possible link to the correct method ?
Any ROM available that is clean and would re activate BT tethering ? Link if any ?
Sorry guys, I am not lazy, just dizzy reading all the threads and trying to short them out between versions...
A mistake would put me in worse situation and 2 simple answers from anyone that knows would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.

I9515 SIM Unlock Issues: Usual method of Unlocking not working

Hello, I have trawled through every thread I could find related to the S4 I9515 model but can't find any correct unlocking information. I have rooted and tried various ROMs but I am always asked for the SIM unlock code. When I attempt to use the SERVICE MODE method and change the PERSO SHA256 settings, the only option my phone returns is PERSO SHA256 Info. Your help will be much appreciated!
My apologies for not placing this thread in the Troubleshooting sub-forum. If any mods see this can you please move this thread if convenient? Thank you.
The service menu exploit worked on version 4.2.2 of Android but was patched in later versions. With the I9505 it is possible to roll back the ROM or modem to Android 4.2.2 temporarily in order to access the service menu or to run RegionLock Away. However, the I9515 comes with Android 4.4.2 out of the box, thus there are no earlier ROMs or modems to roll back to.
Your only options are to ask your carrier for an unlock code, or to purchase one.

SM-G900R4 - US Cellular Galaxy S5 Unlock

Hello everyone,
Sorry if this was posted already - I am typing this up in between other projects and I wanted to put something out here so I wouldn't forget. This last weekend, I purchased a used Galaxy S5 CDMA phone branded by US Cellular. I searched and searched for a way to unlock it but I was not able to find anything that worked for me. My phone is currently running Android 4.4.2 and none of the *# dial codes would do anything for me. Finally I was near a local US Cellular today so I brought my phone in and they unlocked the SIM for me so I can use it with other carriers. I haven't had a chance to go through the phone yet after the unlock, but I plan on looking at it tonight when I get home to find out if I can figure out how it was unlocked so I can share that info with anyone on the site who would like to unlock their SM-G900R4. I'm hoping that during their unlocking process, the hidden menus were left visible so I can look at the phone's file structure. I'll report back as soon as I know more.

Just a quick follow up... I didn't have a chance to go through my phone extensively last night, but I did see something that may or may not be of interest. When I got my phone back after being unlocked, there was an icon for mceFramework. When I clicked on it, it ran in the upper corner of the phone and when I swiped down it said it would be uninstalled. From what I have read about it, it has really nothing to do with the unlocking of the phone though.
Depending on what time I get home tonight will determine if I get to really dig into the phone tonight or not. I'm hoping there is something I will be able to find that will be useful. The US Cellular phone is a bit different though, as I mentioned before regarding the *# codes... No matter what *# codes I try, they do not work... even something as simple as *#060# does nothing on my phone - even after being unlocked. If I find something, I'll report back.

Hello, I came across this thread and just thought I'd share how I was able to unlock my Galaxy s5 Mini (US Cellular). I tried just about everything, but what finally worked was simply flashing the stock rom which can be found at the sammobile site. Use 'Odin', instructions included on the website.

Hello -- stock rom by model number. I think in most cases this is just stock Android for the carrier of specified model, minus bloatware and network lock. Well, I correct myself -- there may be some bloatware, but certainly less than what was there after performing the factory reset. The link to 'sm-g900r4' rom is at sammobile(dotcom), firmwares, search for model number -- and download latest version.
In my case, phone model is 'sm-g800r4' (US Cellular). Everywhere I looked online suggested that I had to contact US Cellular and request instructions for unlocking, but they will only do this if you have the original sim card. So, I finally flashed the stock rom using Odin, following very basic instructions (included on the rom site). After flashing, I still had the US Cellular splash screen, but my verizon sim suddenly worked with the device. Next step for me -- root and replace that ugly US Cellular splash screen with the gorgeous lollipop boot animation. Very nice.
If you need assistance with specific instructions let me know, and I can provide a quick summary.
Simple instructions, great site to join for US Cell users.

Help please... Note 3 n9005 BTU doesn't detect my network operator after flashing

Hi guys,
At the beginning thank you for taking a look and spending your time reading it - I'm just trying to be precise.
Just to clarify - I've spent 11 hours yesterday and 10 hours (and counting) today reading and browsing XDA and different forums, searching/figuring out/trying to find solution,
but I think I gave up on my own and will need your help.
Few days ago I bought myself another same Note 3 SM-N9005 (primarily locked to EE, but unlocked with provider), as my old one (which was factory unlocked).
I had issues with signal (after slight water damage a year ago) - not major, but annoying enough to make me get another one.
So I switched to new Note 3 and decided to check new custom ROMs on my old one.
First I installed stock 5.0 - all worked fine, battery life improved etc.
Then tried Fougat rom and AryaMod - and here the problems began. While using one of those ROMs I inserted Polish SIM card.
Message appeared that I'm on roaming, to switch it on/off etc (don't remember what message exactly appeared as I didn't really pay much attention to it at that time)
I recently ordered new pay monthly Virgin SIM card for my partner. When it arrived I've put it in my old Note 3 and "Emergency calls only" message appeared.
I thought SIM wasn't active yet, so contacted Virgin just to be informed that the card is active on their end (I've put it in my new Note 3 and it was actually working).
A bit confused I put my O2 card into old Note 3 and it connected to the network without any problems.
So I started searching for a solution.
I found out that when I searched other networks on my (modified, old) Note 3 it only found O2 - UK, vodafone UK and 3UK.
I checked the same on my new Note 3 and it found O2, vodafone, EE (whose towers Virgin uses) and 3 UK - so all of them.
I thought that maybe EFS, modem, kernel or bootloader have been corrupted/conflicting, so made TWRP backup of my new Note 3 and old Note 3 (for old just to create serial number folder).
Then I replaced old Note 3 backup with new one, so TWRP could find it and restore the whole image from new Note 3, where everything works (Lollipop EE network version).
That didn't do the trick. Restored AryaMod backup - nothing. Old device still comes with "Emergency calls only" when Virgin SIM card is inserted, but it works with O2 card.
I tried different modems, bootloaders.
I checked the IMEI and it's intact.
At the moment I'm back to Stock Lollipop 5.0 [N9005XXSGBPL6_N9005BTUGBOJ1_BTU] and the problem still persists.
When I flashed the stock ROM and inserted Virgin SIM standard pop-up window appeared with network selection where I've chosen obviously Virgin.
When searching now for available networks it comes up again with only O2, Vodafone and 3 - no EE/Virgin.
For some reason it doesn't find/connect to EE towers.
Baseband: N9005XXUGBOJ1
Kernel: 3.4.0-4540543
Build Number: LRX21V.N9005XXSGBPL6
Network: Unknown
Mobile Network Type: Unknown
Service State: Voice: Out of service/Data: Out of service
Mobile network state: Disconnected
Thanks for reading and apologies for long post.
If I missed anything please let me know.
Hope you guys will be able to help and direct me what to do to get it working again
Very difficult to follow your rambling post .
Step one is IMEI the right one .
Two correct baseband and CSC for your network ??

Sorry, I know it's long and quite rambling. I'll start new thread with just quick explanation.
Answering your question - yes, tried different modems and used EE and BTU firmwares.
Phone was bought factory unlocked (new), so BTU version should work, but it doesn't.
