[Q] Screen Render Rate Drops After Certain Battery Level - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm a Samsung Galaxy S4 user (I9500XXUGNF6). with rooted stock rom (4.4.2) installed.
After the battery level %25-%30; screen render rate drops dramatically (in app's like Candy Crush Saga)
When i plug the charger, it returns to normal. Or when the battery is full or nearly full.
This occurs almost two weeks on my device.
No background processes, wiped ram repeatedly.
Restarted the device and tried,
Wiped cache partition... But no solution.
I'm waiting for your advices.
Thanks all.

It's obviously some battery saving feature which activates at around 30%.
Plugging the charger deactivates the thing because it doesn't require battery anymore.

First of all thanks for ur kind reply.
But i dont use any battery saving program. Do u have any advice about reverting back to default settings ? ( except factory reset or smthng else)

The rom has an in-built battery saver. I think it was called Power Save. It should be in the status bar on stock kitkat roms.

Thanks but i never use that option and checked again and it is still deactivated.

it may be related to DVFS. Dynamic Voltage something. It's basically a performance limiter. Try disabling that.

disabled dvfs..i was hopeful about that solution but not worked for me..

[Q] Galaxy S4 - GT-i9505 Trouble

Hi,
I bought a Galaxy S4 - GT9505 and before a few months ago. After updated to Android 4.3 (official firmware) I have been facing a lot of problems, such as battery drain and the main problem is when I have wifi or mobile data turned on, and when battery is at 60-65%, for instance, my device shutsdown randmoly. And then I try to reboot but it goes to samsung logo and then reboot again and so on. My only option is to connect to the power or usb and then I can reboot. When I do this It starts charging in 60-65% so it recognizes the real battery status.
So, could you please help me with this issue?
Thank you in advance.

I also have this problem. But in my opinion - if you have custom ROM with custom kernel (read below):
#Your phone reboots (before reboot on the screen you can see 4 lines, glitching...)... - It occurs If I set CPU to maximum speed (2.3ghz). So if I use 2.16ghz speed - it occurs rarely...
#You say that your phone sometimes boots twice - I just ignore it and pull batery out/in and that's it... You don't reboot your phone so often...
# Battery drains fast? Check settings, there is "battery usage" and shows which program uses battery most.
!!! Always use "Battery saving mode" on galaxy S4 - it does....NOTHING except saves battery, and very well. I haven't noticed any performance reduction...
#Not sure, but do you have battery isues? If yes, go to recovery menu (yep, shut down first) and wipe cache ETC... I read in forums somewhere that if you want to calibrate battery, just charge it fully, than pull out the battery, WAIT about 5 minnutes and put it back... Not sure about this method, check google
How old is the s4, did you buy it brand new or secondhand? If its secondhand hand to you It sounds like your battery is coming to the end of its use able life.

[Q] LG G2 D802 battery problem after getting overheated

Hi all,
I would like to ask you(with better skills than me) something about my LG device. Once I got up after listening to music my device was approximately 42celsius degrees and i had to turn it off for 30 mins to get it on a normal temperature. After that I realized my device battery is draining so fast. I don't know why....my idea is that: because of the high temperature or it's a software bug. I plug my phone off at 6:30am and after using it a little I only have maximum 20% at 4:00pm. I'm using Alegen's 5.0.1 rom and all the people who use it said they haven't got a problem like me. I downloaded CPUz and it says my battery life is good. So please help me because I don't know what to do.
Sorry about my English.
42 is a verry low temp. My G2 have 45 in idle, doing nothing. Dont worry, there is no pb with battery

Thanks for your answer but what should I do with my battery draining? I'm using it on a very low brightness and wifi is turned off,etc...
Make a nandroid backup and then try reflashing to stock after a full battery charge. Use the phone until 5-2% and then fully charge it. Then use as normal and see if it helps. If that hasnt helped it could be battery issues.
Also when the phone heats up is it near the top beside the camera?

Maybe you have some apps which keeps your device awake, try with another rom/kernel kombination (dont use 5.0 roms to test battery as battery is better on stock based roms)

99% of the time this is the case - a rogue app running, or one of its services, keeping the phone awake and running in the background.
OP, try this: reset the phone to factory settings, restart it and then just leave it like that for 30 minutes or so. Don't even enter your SIM PIN or anything. If the phone is still heating up, the unit is defective and requires service (it is not impossible that the battery is shorting out somewhere somehow).

Under factory reset you mean I have to backup the original LG software or my lollipop rom is good?
No, just try resetting to factory defaults (obviously, back up everything important), you can do it either through the menu or the recovery.

Massive battery drain when screen is off

So I have my phone like 4 days now and the first day I immediately noticed that when I turn off the screen it drains battery like hell (60+% in one night). It's like the cpu doesn't go to sleep at all.. Sometimes it works fine and looses like 5% at night that's fine for me but then the next day it will loose 10+ % in one hour by doing nothing...
The phone is pure stock, I changed nothing, no root or anything...
This is really annoying have no idea what it could be that drains so much battery.. Already looked if an app was draining but no...
Someone has the same problem? Or maybe knows how to fix this?
Clear the cache.
In case you don't know.
Turn phone off
Hold Home + Power + Volume Up till you see the Samsung logo, then let go of all buttons.
A menu should load - Navigate using vol keys and select using power button.
I had a similar issue and this fixed it for me.

So did it last night but changed not much at all, at most it drains 2% less an hour..
I'm thinking if factory reset would fix it but I don't really wanna do that..

There is an excellent thread on battery life for note5 which you can use to get tips for edge plus too. Here is the link :
http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note-5/567125-note-5-battery-life-thread.html
Samsung has provided lot of inbuilt apps like Smart Manager which is like Clean Master you get in Play store.
Open Smart Manager ---> Click on Storage --> click on Detail ---> click on Cache data --> click delete to clean cache.
Lot of people downloaded Greeify, shutupp, wave lock detector and doze which actually use battery. After I uninstalled them battery life increased by 45 minutes.

I agree. Most of the apps that promise to increase battery life degrade it further. In fact, this Paranoia of ours with battery life (keep checking every 10 minutes for battery drop) affects it further.
So, I would suggest uninstall all 3rd party apps. And do not track battery life every instant. And still if you think your battery isn't lasting long enough (check On Screen Time/ Active Time at end of day), contact Samsung.
Hello there!
I had the same problem initially. I wasn't sure which app was causing. So i did a factory reset and reconfigured everything. Now all well. So i guess the best thing would be to backup everything do a factory reset. Then carefully monitor the other app you are installing. There are few that draws lot of power for location services. Then disable that S voice wake up command thingy I am guessing it runs all the time which is not so great. Don't go for Greefiy or any apps like that. Those don't do great job unless you have a Xposed running
So I tried clearing the cache but did noting. I had GPS always on I thought maybe if I turn it off but the same changed nothing.. I don't have any "battery Monitoring" or greenify like app.. Sometimes it works fine but othertimes it drains like crazy doing nothing.. I will try factory reset, hope that will fix this..
Same was here

Hello mate. I faced the same battery drain problem. It wasn't going to deep sleep when screen was off. Last night 6-7 hours screen was off but the device wasted my %19 battery so result was missing the alarm and got late to work etc. Then I rooted and flashing the Arter97 kernel solved this(Now draining about %3). The device is now sleeping deeply like a deeply sleeping baby when screen is off lol.

I'm running custom rom arter kernel tried everything but nothing really fixes completely my problem.. Start to think I have a faulty phone..

Android System battery drain and crazy overheating

So yeah, this is a Galaxy S4 I've had for over three years (bought it on May 6 2013, started using about three weeks later on May 30). It's a non-LTE i9500 model purchased in Indonesia, rooted back on KitKat but unrooted to update to Lollipop and have not re-rooted since. Running Android 5.0.1 with Dec security patch, and just re-flashed stock firmware from SamMobile trying to fix its horrible battery life, but not possible it seems. Battery is about a year old and is my third unit after the first two swelled up and became unusable, this one seems fine but has a habit of dropping quickly when used and regaining some battery power on standby. When used for light browsing the processor heats up to almost insane levels not even the famously hot Snapdragon 808 reaches on my G4, but cools down quickly as well, with the software never acknowledging such heat and remaining responsive throughout the whole time. Is there any technical explanation for such occurences?
You need to install battery monitorin tools.

Well, the official firmware AFAIK has no battery drain/overheating issue
But if incase youre getting it (which obviously cannot be ruled out), try clearing cache and try removing your memory card and then testing the overheating part
Also, do NOT use any performance optimization apps as they do more bad than clearing junk
Plus, Try a different light version of any rom and then revert (such as the MBP v4). Might work.
Technical explanation for battery drains :
1. Bad Network (causes l2_hsic wakelocks. Bad. Very bad.)
2. Overly Filled Memory card/Internal Memory
3. Performance optimization apps (Damaging.)
4. No deep sleep (Check using CPU SPY)
5. Overly filled cache memory. (Clearing cache should be done once in a month, It helps a great deal)
6. Resetting fuel Gauge (a non-calibrated fuel gauge would cause this thing to happen. Reset it by using *#0228#)
7. Using a non-standard charger.
8. Some part of the phone not working or has gone bad and probably you don't know
Press thanks if this helps

Well I just flashed the official firmware two days ago and factory reset as well. There's no more memory card in the phone, and I disabled all the apps I'm not using. Only installed app so far is GSam and nothing else.
Network isn't an issue, as my S7 and G5 get great battery. Charger is a standard Samsung one (not the original, but it is a non-fast one), but doesnt matter which charger I use the Android System is number one drainer followed by Android OS. Screen is usually number 3. Wakelocks arent an issue either: standby is great as battery level goes UP in standby. Active usage is the main issue here: about 1.5 to 2h of continuous usage before it dies.
So, any clues?
Also, what's the fuel gage thing?

Fuel Gauge :
"By resetting the guage you delete the battery stats file and create a fresh file. By this system does provide any feeds while on battery and this helps the battery to last longer without any conflict with other apps."
" it's not like calibration because it will not make battery to longer work, if your fuel gauge chip is ok, and if u reset it, u will not see differences, but if your chip went crazy and u reset fuel gauge chip, your batt indicator can drop(or grow) for ~30%(or less or more)" - @Sejk97
If official Firmware has a drain, Try a custom rom. The lite version. As mentioned earlier. Would definitely help
And if android OS is consuming power, Try complaining to google. (It is meant to use power bdw, but in official lolipop, it uses power more than required. That is why we use custom roms :') )

Okok, thank you SO MUCH. My Galaxy S4 now has a usable amount of battery after resetting the fuel gauge. Still not excellent, but definitely a massive improvement over before. If I get it a new battery, it will definitely get me excellent uptime.

android system eating up my battery

This problem started a few days ago randomly. I never installed a new app or changed any settings. Started out while I was on a custom ROM. I tried another ROM and same thing. Tried fully erasing everything my phone and still no luck. Fully unrooted and went back to complete stock and Android system is still eating away. When I went back to stock I started the phone as new. Did not restore any apps. This is very frustrating cause it started out of nowhere and it doesn't want to go away no matter what I do. My phone is dying halfway through my day with Android system having double the % that my screen on time has

Go into settings/accounts and see if anything is having a problem syncing. You should also turn off Bluetooth and set location to battery saving if you aren't using Bluetooth devices or GPS. Which build of Android are you using? Is the high battery drain when the phone is idle? In use? Both? Presumably you wiped the system cache after going back to stock?

Which build of Android are you using? Is the high battery drain when the phone is idle? In use? Both? Presumably you wiped the system cache after going back to stock?

Accounts are all synced good. I have wifi and Bluetooth scanning off. Location is on battery saving. And I'm on latest vendor 7.1.1 and usually it's when I'm using the phone. Idle drains some too but not that much of a difference.

Did you wipe the system cache? The only obvious thing that might drain your phone when in use is having the screen brightness set very high, but that shouldn't make a huge difference. You said the problem began when you were on a custom ROM but now you are fully stock? That's odd. Poor network connection can also cause high battery drain. I think if you reset your network settings it will force your phone to look for the closest available cell tower. Do you have GSM or CDMA service?

This problem started a few days ago randomly. I never installed a new app or changed any settings. Started out while I was on a custom ROM. I tried another ROM and same thing. Tried fully erasing everything my phone and still no luck. Fully unrooted and went back to complete stock and Android system is still eating away. When I went back to stock I started the phone as new. Did not restore any apps. This is very frustrating cause it started out of nowhere and it doesn't want to go away no matter what I do. My phone is dying halfway through my day with Android system having double the % that my screen on time has

When battery is run down, what is displayed under battery>>android system>>use details? Please paste those details here. Are you in an area of extremely poor LTE signal? Have you ever used Better Battery Stats? Install it and run it for a full battery cycle. Your problem will likely be solved by a factory reset from the stock recovery.

Wouldn't high screen brightness go under the screen category and not Android system? I will reset my network settings and see if it makes a difference. I would assume flashing back to stop and erasing all data on the phone would do that and wipe all system cache as well.

I have BBS installed but without root I don't think it's much help? I will post screenshots when my battery goes down to about 15%
Some people have reported that the following works, although I don't understand why it would. Go into settings/battery/battery optimization/all apps/reset app preferences.
A factory reset shouldn't be necessary if you did a completely clean stock install but it also couldn't hurt.

Again, your problem will likely be solved by a factory reset from the stock recovery.
Weren't you running BBS when you were rooted and running multiple custom roms? Why not re-root now and use BBS or GSam?

I never use root even with custom Roms. I feel like I have no need for it. I did what was mentioned earlier and reset my network settings and also I disabled chrome and started using a different browser and so far Android system is the same percentage as screen. Not good but way better than before. BSS is also showing 2 hours "awake (screen off)" which is kinda alarming

You didn't see anything odd when you went into accounts and looked at syncing? For Google you clicked on the account and looked at each individual thing that gets synced under Google? If you were rooted you could try the Naptime app. I hated it but it has many fans. Basically it puts your phone in an extreme Doze state when you aren't using it, which might fix your problem. But if you want anything to work with the screen off you have to exempt it from Doze. Screen off in Naptime kills pretty much everything.
Same here. Everything stock. Just checked accounts settings and everything is good.
right now my top 5 is:
Screen 13% (2h:52min SOT)
Android System 10%
Android OS 9%
Facebook 8%
WhatsApp 5%
and in overall I've been around 40 min on Facebook, and you know that this **** consumes a lot, so go figure out how the hell is Android System and OS above it.

They are components shared by applications so that's rather normal to have them high.
I don't care about Android architecture much so only look at my SOT (which is nominal).
Those interested in why system and OS are high, should read the battery stats source code to see what's grouped under these and how it's being calculated.
I locked my bootloader last night and did a factory reset from settings. Right now Android system is at 5% and screen at 4%
I'm about to completely just give up

Android System tally is the sum total of a number of components. That it is "high" is not necessarily a big deal. The real question is: what are each of those components using? When your battery is run down, what is displayed under battery>>android system>>use details? Those usage details may help you find a problem if you even have one. Short of rooting and running a dedicated battery usage/wakelock app, these details may be the best you will get.
Decided to run purenexus and exkernel with root to get better stats. Battery is a little better but still not even close to how it used to be. Here are screenshots of everything . Woke up with 100% around 5:30 am. Went to work and the gym and wat he'd some YouTube.
The only way I found to fix this issue was to implement aggressive doze as soon as screen is off.
If you're on MM this can be done using apps like ForceDoze
And on Nougat using NapTime
Furthermore , I also implemented ElementalX kernel with Hawktail governor.
Since these changes my Screen is on top of the list in battery and maximizes my screen on time. Nothing else works for me.
The phone tends to stay awake needlessly without all these tweaks.

I really don't see anything wrong here, except awake time and maybe SOT. 4 hours SOT is very good for stock and you are at what 3.3 hours? I use the Hawk Tail governor profile in EX as well and it gives me just a small amount of improvement over stock settings. I use the stock rom, rooted with EX and get 4-5 hours SOT.

I think the 2 hours awake screen off is normal unless you use an App like Naptime to put your phone in Doze as soon as the screen is off. If you are really concerned with idle battery life you might want to try Naptime, but you may need to play with the settings so the phone works like you want, Naptime by default turns off everything that isn't excluded from Doze when the screen goes off. That includes music players and the fingerprint sensor.
