Make some noise people! OK google! Fix this - Galaxy S6 General

Many of you already know that Samsung or Google, neither is taking full credit has removed the ok Google from any screen option. This is utter bull crap. The fact that our phone is being crippled without any explanation or reasoning is unacceptable. we as the Android community need to be loud about this. Whether you use the Service or not isn't the issue. You should at least have the option. We need to be loud about this. Bombard them with our inquiry as to why this feature is no longer there. Below is a few links to get you started. I'm still working on finding a direct contact number for Google so that we can call them. the squeaky wheel gets the oil!

I frankly couldn't care less about that feature but I understand your concerns. I'm pretty sure Google will eventually return the feature after they make some tweaks.

To me it's like is suddenly Gmail no longer had a spam folder. yes you still have gmail. and it essentially function the same. But a feature, and maybe a key feature to some people is removed and its only for one particular phone. now it's already been established that spam folder works just fine. But without any reason or explanation its just gone. most people wouldn't care. just a few more emails you have to delete. But to the few that really want it it's a big deal.
I Drive a lot. A lot of us do. And that hands-free experience of okay Google is essential. It actually might become a deal breaker for me. its not there yet but it might be . let's hope I don't have to make that decision and google just fixes this

Your problem is not a Google problem. You will be barking up the wrong tree. Install Nova launcher and see for yourself. It is Touchwiz that is lacking the feature. Talk to Samsung about it.

Samsung can't remove it. And didn't. They may have influenced Google to do it but google is the only one that could turn that feature off. Remember, it was on for the first few weeks. Then it was randomly turned off with out any app update or software.

What a logic. If a different launcher brings it back, it's Samsung's fault, otherwise it's Google's fault.

I don't think you understand how the feature is supposed to work. Turning Nova's feature on only gives you listening when you're on a home page. The full Google feature listens from any screen, no matter the app (and from screen off if you're plugged in).
Nova's feature was rolled out before Google's came to all devices and they're not really related.
That the feature is missing has nothing to do with the launcher.

This is a pretty big issue. I suspect the latest update broke it. I liked having the "From any screen" and from a locked screen feature.

Humm looks like a Samsung tweak to me and coincides with the battery drain fix we got through Samsung Services app. I'm really not a fan of always on Hot words and the like id rather my device was saving its battery than slamming its self listening for a word.
The choice should be their though but my guess is the battery hit just wasnt worth it for the very small number of users who want / need the feature. as other have said new launcher or root/rom and fix the problem yourself
Chances of Samsung "Fixing" this very very very very very very small.
ADZ

Samsung definitely removed it. Just got my phone last Thursday and I had the option on the phone, as soon as I received the Samsung push for the battery drain it was gone.

I personally couldn't care less about it but hey, if you need it you need it. I don't feel as my phone is "crippled " , didn't even notice it.

I've actually started using S-Voice now (don't kill me) and it's actually really nice. The fact that I can activate it from the lockscreen with the screen off, NOT charging, is a big win too.

I would give S voice a try. I'm liking it more than I thought I would. It's just on par with Google in speed and it has more functionality.

Perhaps i am weird (or maybe its working in an office), but i have never had the urge to yell at my phone to search.. or do things.... Ill admit i have used my wear to do some texts in the car, but even then i feel pretty silly.
That said, i am not a fan of removing features, but i also air on the side of caution. If an update removed it, i would suspect it was for a cause less nefarious than an evil samsung, and more likely to fix a bug or battery issue. But till we hear something official, its only really guessing...

I'm really ticked off about it. I left my Moto X 2014 for the S6 because of the camera. I probably wouldn't have if I had known that I wouldn't have the full Google Voice functionality on this phone; I typically use Google Voice to interact with my phone several times a day. What really gets me upset is that I didn't realize it until the DAY AFTER my 2 week return period... Luckily, I have a Moto 360 that I can use Google Voice with. This was a crappy move by Samsung. I hope they bring it back.

Those are not what the thread is referring to. OP is referring to "OK Google" from any screen (not just launcher home screens) - for instance, you could trigger Ok Google while in Gmail, Maps, etc - any app really, without needing to go back to Nova or Apex.

Issues with 2.1...

Sorry in advance if these have already been pointed out and/or fixed.
I'm aware that this is a leaked beta but i'm having some strange issues.
Mainly being the market not downloading apps. I can browse the internet, browse the market, but nothing will download.
Anyone know of a way to fix this?
Also, i was quite disappointed with the fact that they did next to nothing to the absolutely terrible camera. The shutter speed appears to have improved *slightly* but pictures are still far too sharp and over saturated.
On the other hand, i do like the 720p filming
Another thing i noticed is that interacting with the live wallpapers is way off. When you press the 'Nexus' live wallpaper, the actual 'hit' is almost an inch out. Not a huge deal, just something that's annoying me.
On the plus side, the live wallpapers are incredibly smooth. A lot smoother than on my Nexus, god knows how dell managed that!
But my main hate, the one that annoys me to no end, is that you can now only have 6 icons in landscape. Wtf was the point in that dell? You took the best thing about this phone and made it worse!
Apart from alllll those things, i'm absolutely loving the 2.1 update (especially the dialler) but because of the above mentioned things i'm getting tempted to go back to 1.6. I need to download things dammit!
Another 2 issues that bothered me were the crap keyboard which is VERY slow and if you rush it you get mistypes, sometimes I have to press the same button twice as it did nothing the first time and I get a spelling mistake in every word, the keyboard is messed up.
Anyway to get the superior keyboard from the previous 1.6 with the lovely numpad?
Secondly, there are some problems with the wallpaper/homescreens. There is no way to add or remove them, seems I'm stuck with 6.
I tried to set a simple wallpaper on say screen one and it stretches right outside the screen and fills all 6 screens up, why??!!
I am using the same wallpapers before that are specially for the streak and are set at 800X480 and it stretches one pic across all screeens and it looks distorted, why?
Before I upgraded, I could go to screen one, put a wallpaper, it would fit fine and only in one screen, not fill the other ones too.
Can ANYONE think why this is or even a fix to this problem?
At the moment I have more problems with 2.1 than 1.6...
Glad to see I'm not the only one with these issues. I can't stand the new keyboard, driving me mad but I'll survive. I don't like the new layout of the icons and the fact you can no longer have multiple backgrounds is a shame. Also I've noticed certain widgets just won't sit in the centre of the home screens any more.
I'm hoping because this is a leak that Dell haven't added their personal touches yet and that this will come when they go official otherwise I'll be a sad panda!

Yeah, I guess we have to stick with what we have until it's officially released.
At least we have SOME improvements...
The portions you mention I have not had. It sounds like you have a few issues with your install.
With regards to we everthing else, 2.1 ain't perfect but its a tonne better than the 1.6

Of course by portions I mean problems....the swype keyboard although better its still far from perfect

Hi Meltus
If your Google E-Mail account is Googlemail change it to gmail by logging in through your computer and use the option to change it to a gmail address and that has fixed the Market problems for me and some others hope it works for you.
Marc
Any one else having issues that when talking on the phone with headphones in if you press the lock button it hangs up the call? Found something that drives me even more mad than the keyboard lol.
Not sure what I am doing wrong , but I can't seem to use any 3rd party keyboards ? They install OK , I can select them , but then when I go to use them , the Dell one pops up. (Any ideas ? )
The only issue I noticed , is that the Sleep/wake button stops working properly occasionally , instead of putting the device to sleep , it dims the screen , but the screen stays on ,
Not sure what is going on here , I think the phone may "think" its asleep , as the live wallpaper stops moving , but the screen is definately still awake.
The only way out is to reboot by taking the battery cover off !
Seems an isolated problem I don't have any problem downloading just that some games wont work - more importantly launcherpro looks very strange with tiny icons! Spread a across the screen with Hugh gaps.

i have had EVERY issue above! its beta so im not going to complain but i just hope its much better once the ota arrives

However, I do believe if you change to Gmail from Googlemaill, any apps you bought with your Googlemail account are NOT carried over.
Hence you have to purchase again, this is why I haven't made the switch yet, until that issue is resolved I will be staying as Googlemail.

Exactly the same problem here.
And to change keyboards, you select it and long press a text box (like in messages) then you pick the keyboard you want from there.
Anyway, i fixed my market problem by changing my e-mail from 'googlemail' to 'gmail' (thanks doggman) and then wiping the phone. Not sure which made it work, or whether it was a combination of both, but it's working good now
Issues I've noticed so far: (Maybe nitpicking but I'm comparing it to all my other Androids)
- Live Wallpaper could be smoother. It's pretty smooth but on such a large screen, little glitches are very noticeable.
- Though the keyboard is a lot more comfortable to use without the numpad throwing the right thumb off, the responsiveness is gone from the previous keyboard. But I'm sticking with it cause its alot better looking than 'Better Keyboard' or 'Smart Keyboard'
- No pinch-to-zoom on pictures in the gallery...very disappointing
- Pinch-to-zoom for maps is there, but responsiveness needs work. Almost as bad as Blackberry Torch's pinch-to-zoom. HAHAHA
- Photos seem more saturated than when it was running 1.6. Even affects photos when being used as 'Picture Frame' widget.
- Aside from the saturation of pictures though, the screen display overall is impressive. Quality has improved, sharpness has improved, the HD-feel is there for the home screens. I could even say that it is comparable to the iPhone 4, and better than the Galaxy S display. Theres room for improvements though... better font for icon titles, increase sharpness, less colour overflow.

4.4.2 update has been out for a while, what are everyone's thoughts

Hi All,
Now that the KK update is out and installed on all RAZR HDs except for those that are pokey, I thought I'd see what everyone's opinions are.
Try to be a little more informative than "it's good", "I like it", or "it sucks", "I want a different phone". I figured this would be a good place to post up new tricks you've discovered, maybe weren't aware of before actually installing the new OS, and maybe help others discover and maximize the capabilities of the phone now.
DO NOT POST ANYTHING IN THIS THREAD RELATED TO "WHEN IS THE NEW ROOT METHOD COMING"!!!! There are enough threads getting spammed with that nonsense.
I'll go first I guess:
- Liking the extra RAM that has been freed up with the update. About 30-40 additional MB, which in my case with everything I am running every little bit helps!
- Liking that I am now able to take advantage of the KK Xposed modules.
- Thankful that @iBolski pointed me to the new way to hack the wireless hotspot.
- I was toying with the Daydream option in settings, but couldn't get it to work correctly I don't think.
- Definitely enjoying having a 2-yr old phone that is software relevant again. Having unlimited data on VeeZeeDub I like being able to put off outright buying a phone again like I did this one.
- Liking the fact that lockscreen widgets can be posted on the lockscreen, and that a simple swype down from the clock (while using pattern lock method) moves the pattern lock to the bottom and allows the ability to view the widgets without unlocking the phone. Also like that camera is one of the widgets - much easier to get to in a pinch!
- Liking the fact that with Gravity Box [KK] I can use the frosted lockscreen image setting. Have been wanting that for a while.
- Also liking that when music is playing on the phone, the lockscreen image is changed to a picture of the album cover art (not sure if this is a mod I set up in XBlast Tools or in Gravity Box [KK] or something that is standard on the KK OS, but liking it regardless)
...more to come I'm sure!
I love it since I have root.
Things I love:
-Quicker to launch applications
-No lag, or hold ups
-The new pull down menu is a lot better.
-The lock screen and the ability to to take a picture while locked is very nice.
-Battery life seems to be better.
Things I hate:
-Swype is not included and now I have to pay $3.99
Overall, great update!
I concur with Modernmidnights assessment with the exception of Swype. I haven't used it since I purchased Swiftkey. Like that so much better.
My con was the popping noise, but that's fixed now with the fix that @kabaldan gave us. You can get that here:
http://d-h.st/vre
Otherwise, great performance. Lag is gone. Heck, I hate to say it, but I'm getting better performance out of stock than I did with Nexesque ROM and that ROM was great under JB.
Very happy with this release.
is it possible to have google now on this device?
i mean that thing that u say "ok google now" and the phones wakes up and talks to you?
or it is not possible since the hardware is not compatible?

I'm also using Swiftkey, started before Swype was a feature for the AOSP keyboard (at least I think so, else I didn't know how to enable it while looking for it). I have already even deleted the stock keyboard, lol. Come to think of it I remember when Swiftkey added Swype. Was a test of sorts, then it disappeared for about a week, I was so mad I sent a nastygram to them to which they responded that it'll be coming in an update and that it was just a beta test.
Popping noise... mind elaborating slightly? I'm wondering if it's the same popping noise I am getting with autovoice enabled for listening...

Rather than rehash it all, here is a link to a thread I started over in the Q&A forum about it and @kabaldan provided a newly compiled boot image that fixes it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2761162
It seems to affect some, but not all phones, whether the bootloader is locked or unlocked.
My apologies for making you respond, I should have looked harder. Your topic describing the issue was almost right below this thread. I don't think that's what my issue is.
I've noticed many problems with the stock messaging app and with hangouts as well, so many I deleted them both and switched to Go SMS pro.
Sigh, hearing there is another update from Motorola on the way makes me sad, I've customized the phone so much since the update I don't want to go back to stock and do it all over again.

The latest motorola phone can do that because they have a dedicated , very low power processor for it , if we did this on our phone , it would ruin the battery life.
the closest you ca, achieve , is with nova launcher, you can program it to respond to "ok google" when you are on the main screen.

Google Now is already on the phone. Now, if you want it to launch from the launcher, then at this point, no. The Google Now Launcher is not available for this phone (yet).
However, as another poster stated, you can get the latest Nova Launcher and it has the ability to respond to "Ok Google" from the desktop.
Or, if one is rooted, use the Xposed module OK Google For Third Party Launchers and enable everything (all apps, EVERYTHING) within. Now I can use "OK Google" to launch Google Now from any application or screen (except for the lockscreen... still working on that one...)
Took about 5 minutes to go through all 150+ apps to enable them all, but worth it.
Another question for all:
Has anyone tried using the Moto Skip yet after upgrading to 4.4.2? I found the apk online (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/moto-skip-apk-t2416837 check post #4)
It installed just fine and ran when entered from settings --> security, but I haven't actually tested it yet since I don't have any NFC tags on hand. Might see if I can pick up NFC tags to see if it works.
Little by little, changing this phone into a "Moto X Mini" lol. Let's call it Moto X Dragon, it sounds cooler 8) lol

I think personally, the OS is a lot snappier but there are a lot of bugs that are still present in the final release thought, I haven't had the popping noise sound but I have encountered soft reboots when I boot the phone with headphones in, it does lag a little sometimes but that's due to lack or ram. I love wireless printing, and read receipts. Would love art runtime if more apps were compatible with it. I'm just glad to have it. Having an locked bootloader isn't that great, the first Razr Maxx HD I had was and that was lovely, but I digress. Daydream is kind of useless to me. I am a battery converservationists. The multiple home launcher selector was well worth the wait. I can run Nova Launcher or the Google Now Launcher whenever I want to. Another drawback is that I can't write anything to the SD card unless it's with a system app now. Battery life is decent, I get a full day of heavy usage everyday. Which is the reason I purchased the phone, battery life. After a few days of running KitKat the random battery drain stopped for me.
i'm now on JB rooted, and i've change my font to playful. If i update to kitkat, will i lost my font? coz i realy love the font :crying:

Samsung possibly disabling "Ok Google" from anywhere

http://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS6/comments/339zyv/ok_google_crippled_and_per_samsung_no_longer_a
I don't know if this is related to the recent Google Play Services updates or not, or if this really came from Samsung or not. But the options are definitely gone and were there when the phone was first released:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1rC3Pne6YD1bHFRc2ZXRm53RmF1T2NjUmZLX3J0TjhMWE93/view
Normally you'd see the options for using it from any screen and using it while the screen is off and charging, and those options were definitely there when the phone was first released. There's a Note 4 user on G+ that might be seeing the same, but hasn't confirmed for sure yet.
Edit: I'm on the Verizon variant, but have seen a few others that are not Verizon seeing the same thing.

It seems to be a widespread problem. People aren't noticing it since it was an option not everyone turned on. Those that did are missing it and pissed. The fact that the Retrain Voice option is missing makes me believe this is more an error than deliberate, but you never know.
Google Help Forums
Sprint. Gone for me now too. I used this all the time too.
it makes me wonder if there is some sort of security concern. like the ability for someone to walk up, say OK Google and then say a command that could execute an unwanted command. like maybe wipe the phone, or email all your money to my account! ha ha
Both are unrealistic examples...but you catch my drift.
It wouldnt surprise me if it werent removed due to some battery bug or otherwise.
I'd expect it to come back like the Google Fit support did after an update of sorts

Yes it's there and already works with s voice. There was a way to make it work with Google now but now that Google has removed that feature no longer works. To me this is a big deal and needs more noise than it's getting. This was done on purpose not a mistake. Whether was Samsung or Google its jacked up.
I got tired to working with a crippled phone, so decided to do something about it. I did a little research on the internet and found a workaround. It involves dumping the Touch Wiz launcher. And, since neither Google nor Samsung will acknowledge this as I problem, I was NOT about to use the Google Now Launcher. Therefor, I have now installed and configured the Nova Launcher and now have "Ok Google" working from all pages! It still does not launch with the phone in standby, but at least I have the majority of "Ok Google" restored.

It still does not launch with the phone in standby, but at least I have the majority of "Ok Google" restored.

it works from the home screen, but it does not work from anywhere. JUST when you are in nova launcher. So it's not really a fix. Everyone wants it from ANY screen no matter what app.

Right, it may be just a work around, but at least it restores some functionality until Google or Samsung fixes this issue!

Yes it's there and already works with s voice. There was a way to make it work with Google now but now that Google has removed that feature no longer works. To me this is a big deal and needs more noise than it's getting. This was done on purpose not a mistake. Whether was Samsung or Google its jacked up.

I feel the same. I feel honestly like it was Samsung not wanting competition for its garbage s-voice crap, and worked it out with google. I hope i am wrong but this is samsung and i wouldnt put it past them.
The problem I had with the setting was if it was on detection for all apps then and hangout video or calls would not work. On my S4 before this phone I had it turned off even though I liked the "OK Google" from any screen.

That would make sense if this feature was also not working on other TW devices with wake-up S-Voice. That's not the case however, as it works flawlessly on my Note 10.1 2014. What I'm hoping is that Samsung is working with Google to give the Google app access to the cpu Samsung uses in the S6 for screen off voice control. Then we'll have 'ok google' voice controls with no battery drain.

Makes sense! That would be nice for sure. I didnt think about it working on other phones that had s-voice (duh lol). good catch. :good:
Love svoice that launches from any screen even the locked one and you can tell whatever name you gave it (could just be 'OK Google') to open Google. And voila you have Google from any screen.

Google now cant access microphone

So i use "ok google" a lot and have on all of my phones. But i constantly am having issues with my Nexus 6p, it will simply not work and when i press the mic button on the google search widget it tells me "cannot access microphone" a reboot fixes it or simply waiting a little bit then it will work again. It's anyone else having this problem??
Haven't seen this one personally. That sucks sorry.
I had that problem when I had cortana. It had taken priority. Prior phone though.

Unless you specify what is installed on the phone, what ROM, etc.
It's difficult to help.
I would start disabling the apps I installed prior to this happening.

Yea sorry, stock no special add ons and minimal app, facebook, instagram, ect very simple i have other phones and tablets to play i keep this guy stock for now
i have this problem too occasionally. a reboot fixes.
as someone else already mentioned, i suspect some other program is taking over the mic but i haven't figured out which one yet.
what's weird is that only okay google and the home screen search bar mic is busted when this happens. i can still use the mic to search in chrome and to do anything else (like write a text or whatever).
anyway, keeping an eye on this thread in case anyone figures out what the guilty app is.
May try going to app settings for the Google app (press and hold on it in the app drawer and drag it to app info is the fastest way)
And then go to permissions. Mic should be on. If it's not turn it on. If it is on, try turning it off then back on?

Do any of you have Smart Lock with Trusted Voice enabled?
Same Issue
I also have this issue. My phone is non rooted. Only broken through the search widget. I was using nova launcher. Now using google launcher to see if that cures the issue. So far so good. Will now download my common used apps and see if anything breaks it. I really hope it was'nt Nova. I'll cry. I did speak to Google and they will replace the phone under warranty but I am going to test first anyways. I won't be returning my phone to google anytime soon as they want to pre authorize another charge on my credit card to ship me the device well behold I don't have enough available credit for a pre auth. Said they have no other options. So if your phone is under warranty and needs to be replaced make sure you have a good credit limit. I even offered to send them my phone before they sent me the new one but they said I cannot do that. So upset with google right now and their returns.
I had the same issue as OP, as recent as this past weekend. I was stock/normal rooted, no special launcher, no cortana. Microphone worked fine for speakerphone, but i could not use voice search on Google now on my phone, my moto watch, or android auto in my car. Weird how one issue spans three devices.
google searches yielded nothing. i deleted tons of apps and nothing. i went ahead and just flashed the whole stock rom, and it works normal now.
Check the permissions settings.
I am having the same problem as the OP. Glad to know I'm not alone.

Reading the thread, had anyone solved this problem? I took the advice on checking the permission settings and found that all permissions are allowed except for storage and camera (or was it contacts? I don't remember exactly, both of them are lcoated closely). Anyhow, I decided to just allow all permissions, walla it seemed to have solved the problem, I pressed my finger on the microphone at the back of the phone and said "ok google" and it responded. Can anyone else try to see if this works?
This new permission structure has its fair share of problems, I have plenty apps crashing because of only partial permission allowed, Skype being one of them

Should BIXBY be renamed shiXsby?

i'm so not impressed. I can't see any added value this brings, or really what is its purpose. It takes longer to do something than manually. Its another S-Voice. Am I alone?

I totally agree with you. After day or so playing with it I think is waste of hardware on Samsung end.
On Edge of Galaxy
I don't like it either.
Samsung should release a dating assistant, and call it SHAGSBY!
Anyone find that it causes massive lag on the phone if you use it? I had to reboot it after half a day because it brought it to a crawl. Now that I disabled it, it is back to normal.
My problem has been, Bixby voice just pops up out of no where recording me... which is strange because it has to be activated with "Hi Bixby" which isn't exactly easy to say mid sentence like "Hey Siri" can be activated by saying "Hey Im serious" I am disabling Bixby again, until they get this fixed. Samsung is already known to record audio with their TV's, I do not need another device secretly recording me.
I used PACKAGE DISABLER PRO to completely disable everything Bixby. What a complete waste of time that app is.

What services or apps do I need to disable it completely?
Thank you
