My soft buttons just suddenly stop working, can't seem to fix them. - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What I have tried so far:
Restarting the phone.
Removing the battery.
clearing the cache.
factory resetting it.
using the *#2663# trick
(the phone's touch key FW is0x0e)
(the part's touch key FW is 0x00)
about to try:
flashing a fresh new base ROM.
I don't think this was a hardware problem because it just died when I was in the middle of using it. Any suggestions anyone?
Currently on an android 4.4.4

Anyone?

It sounds like you've tried everything that can be done software-wise. I think it's service centre time.

This.
If you already flashed a stock rom without getting them working, seems like a hardware problem for me. Flash a stock rom and take it to any Samsung Service Centre. Good luck with that!

I kind of don't think it is, because I just managed to press the back button and both the back and the recent apps button lit up and worked for a whole 2 seconds. they were still lit even when they stopped working, until I placed the phone to sleep.
And flashing it does not work (although I have that DM-verify problem)
P.S. this phone might be partially rooted, any way to fix that?

The fact that they intermittently work doesn't mean there isn't a hardware issue.
You should flash a stock ROM which will remove root and send it back to service.

Time for some on-screen buttons! ?

Screen won't respond when trying to unlock

I just came back to my phone to unlock it, but it wouldn't accept any touch input. I don't think the device had totally locked up, as i could see the signal bars going up and down - plus the physical buttons worked fine.
Has anyone else had this issue? It's getting annoying having to take the back cover off to soft reset more and more frequently!
(I haven't applied any kind of lock screen tweaks btw)
Using the stock T-Mobile UK ROM (1.43)
Thanks

Sorry but my T-Mobile supplied HD2 (on same ROM) has never shown this issue. All OK here. Did the power off (batt out) and reset fix the problem?

I just hit the reset button and it fixed it
Not the first time i've had to reset due to a strange lockup.
Might have to slap a new ROM on soon i think!
Seems to be struggling to get 3G reception (even in areas where my TyTn II was fine) grr!
ive had the phone for about 3 weeks, and used about 3 roms...
i experienced this probelem with the stock rom, and i still do sometiems with custom roms, but not as much as stock.
u should try a custom rom..helps alot.
I've posted about this problem before - it's possible your device is subject to heat problems. Mine did exactly the same thing when it got warm (either in the sun or while charging). Had to put it in the freezer a few times to get the touchscreen to respond again. And the phone worked as if nothing had happened.
Next time it happens, check the temperature of the back of the phone. If it's warm to hot - put it in a plastic bag and into the freezer for a minute or two to cool down, then try again.
I had your problem too many times even after trying cooked ROMs and upgrades/tweaks/hard resets so has gone back for replacement...

went through this for a week. flashed to 5 different ROMS all doing task 29 before I did so and used recommended radios for each build. also did MTTY.
nothing helped.
my only option was to send my phone in to Tmobile for a warranty replacement. so far my replacement is working fine on a cooked rom

Not Unlock after StandBy

Hi All, I have a problem with my HD2 I Update the radio to 2.15.50.4 and when I want to unlock the screen the touch do not respond, i back the radio 2.12.50.2 and the same thing not unlock, anyone Know what is the problem, sorry for my english and Thaks to all.
I change the Rom Too and the same thing, for reference.
Try turning it on with the green button instead of the red one. Mine was doing this, had to send it in, it's a hardware problem between the buttons and the digitizer. Needs to be replaced if it's the same problem. Seems somewhat common. Even flashing back to full stock didn't fix it, it was definitely a hardware issue for me. If you're changing roms, and it's still happening, that doesn't sound good.
Sorry for the bad news, it sucks.
Thanks Willr001, Look similar to your problem and it's the same thing, with the rest of the buttons don't have the problem, how much cost to you to fix the problem??? and thaks for your answer, thanks to you now can unlock my cell, with problem but can unlock.
I don't get how it could be the buttons if you're able to get in to MAGLDR using the power button?
The problem will keep getting worse, I think it will next stop working with the green button, mine took like 4 days from the time the red button stopped working to the green button stopping.
The red button still works fine, it just makes it so the touch screen doesn't work, so MAGLDR would still work fine.
I don't know how much it costs to fix, I'm not sure if it's the buttons, screen, or motherboard that needs to get replaced. Mine was under warranty, so they fixed for free.
HTC knows it's a defect, if you're under warranty, their service center may do it for free.
Thanks for the answer, yea the i can go MagLDR with the red button, and unlock with any other button exept the red, I will verify if si still in warranty for make the same that you, by the way do you think the posibility of change to WM 6.5 to look if the problem remain in that Rom?
You could try, when it happened to me I flashed another WM6 rom, still happened, so then I flashed the original Stock T-Mobile/HTC rom. When it still happened there, I knew it was broke. Made it easy to send back though, because I'd put the stock rom on (warranty people like to see stock roms).
i can't see this is cause by hardware failure. It seems to be a hardware buttons mapping problem so its mean just the software.
I think too that is software problem because I don't need to prees the button to block the screen, only with touch on the button without press is enought to stop function the screen, but i don't have warranty Yet, so I try to solve this for my own, I apreciate all help that you can give me.
i9m having the same problem, i fixed permission and then all buttons wont work. ill try to reinstall the rom and see if the problem will be resolved. im so depressed right now.

[Q] Touchscreen semi-unresponsiveness?

I've looked around and a lot of people have fully unresponsive screens. However, mine is I guess semi-unresponsive?
I can perform all my functions fine, but when I try to power down my phone via power button. It pops up the power menu and then my screen becomes completely unresponsive. I can only use the hard buttons, but nothing on the screen works. When I press the power button again to go into standby, it'll work like normal and my screen works again, all until I try to go to the power menu again. Does anyone know what is wrong?
I forgot which HD2 I'm using, but I know I bought it in the June of it's release and I'm in the US.
My current ROM is HyperDroid-GBX-v12, but I don't think it's a ROM issue since the previous ROM I had was even worse, same problems, but unresponsive at the lock screen at times.
Thanks, and let me know if I can give any other info.
Has this been happening since you flashed the Rom or is this a new problem?
This has just started happening. I think it was present to a lesser extent before, but I am noticing a lot more recently. I flashed a new ROM because I thought it was my old ROM, but the problem isn't going away.
For a work around, download the quick boot app from the market and power your phone off that way.
What Rom are you running now btw?
My current ROM is HyperDroid-GBX-v12,
Thanks for the work around, but I'm really wondering what the problem is since it persists between ROMs. I'm thinking hardware, but then it's so specific that I'm not sure.
The only other think I can think of trying to wipe your phone via CWR by formatting data, boot, system, Sd-ext (if applies), cache, and Dalvik cache. I know you re-flashed your Rom already but did you do a full wipe prior? It could be data corruption from the previous Rom. Just trying to troubleshoot
I'm currently having touchscreen issues myself. At first I though mine was totally hosed but then I read on some thread if you press the power button hard it can revive the screen. It worked for me. I assume there must be some loose cable somewhere beneath the power button that's causing these issues. It's probably just a coincidence that it stops working when you hold it down and you are really having the same issue as me.
I did wipe everything, but now I think of it I think I forgot to format my SD card. I'll try it now thanks.
Nope, still doesn't work. I'm at a lost for what's wrong right now =\

Be careful about mashing the power button too hard. I already have broke one HD2 because the power button cracked.....

GS4 touch keys are dead !!!

Hey guys,
So i bought my phone yestarday, played around with it for a while and suddenly my touch keys stopped working.I keep my touch key light on "Always Off" ..so i thought that maybe if i turn them on,it will do the trick..didn`t work, they don`t even turn on anymore.I did a restart, same thing...only that the phone started laggin` real hard (when i unlocked`it and while using the drop tray).I turned the phone off and on again, same thing..i turned the phone off, pulled the battery out, waited a couple of minutes..same thing.I eventually did a factory reset..didn`t work as well. The phone is stock, haven`t got around to rooting it so it runs on 4.2.2 with XXUAME2 build. One more thing..before i did the factory reset,i digged around the internet for a bit looking for a solution and i came across the *#2663# code...i used that and tried the Touch FW update but it only said "Factory keystring has crashed/stopped working" ..after the factory reset i tried the code again, but the Tough FW button does not appear anymore. Now,do you think it`s a software problem that can be fixed (i would like to avoid rooting since if it does not work i want to send the phone at the samsung cervice center) or it`s a hardware fail and i should just stop looking for solutions and send the phone at the service?Thanx for your time
P.S i had a GS2 so far,rooted`it myself,changed a TON of roms on it and never had a single problem...so for me GS2 > GS4 for the moment

Well, i think that to know if it's a software or a hardware problem you will have to find out by yourself.
First thing to do is to flash a new official rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41072377&postcount=1 (and you don't have to download the attached files in the post)
Then do a factory reset from the phone recovery (VolUp + Home + Power - navigate with the volume touch and confirm with the power button)
For the roms take a look here :
GT-I9505 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41072426&postcount=3
GT-9500 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41072392&postcount=2
And dont forget to search for the same rom that you have, before you flash , check it by dialing : *#1234#
And if you did all this and it haven't resolved your problem so it's Hardware, just take it to the Service center and don't worry for the warrenty because it will remind active and official even after the flash
Thanks for the info and the advice!
Though now i`m convinced that it`s a software glitch, because i just restarted my phone and the touch keys turned on (unless samsung managed to build a phone that self repairs).I`m gonna be on stand-by with that stock rom, just in case it starts acting up again.
L.E Ok,the touch buttons crashed again,so i flashed the stock firmware and they are working now.Hope they don`t die again
Thanx for the help,again
many lastKi
Well, still no luck ..the touch keys keep getting unresponsive..after a while they sprung back to life and so on
I reflashed the stock firmware a couple of time, same thing...
When i use the *#2663# code and press the Touch key FW update it gives me a "Unfortunately,FactoryKeystring has stopped" error, i should mention that on the menu it says:
- Phones`s Touch key FW version: 0x10
- Part`s Touch key FW version: 0xfa
The only app that i have on the phone is WhatApp ....sooo ..dumb question, could WhatsApp be responsible for this behavior ?
L.E i rooted the phone, intalled CWM and the Google rom for GS4 ..touch keys didn`t even buged so i`m unrooting as we speak, returning all to normal and i`ll send the phone to warranty tomorrow

It's funny you mention that, because my GS4 start to restart and shut down by itself. The first thing I did was remove WhatApp because was always gaving me errors and then pull the battery out for 1 hour, since then no more reboots or shutdowns.
I was on Wanamlite when I experienced that. But all I did was an easy reboot and when it comes back, I wipe caches xD and it comes back..
I also prefer the button lights to be off.. so it's always off from the very start

Ok,i just got my phone back from warranty (it`s the second time..the first time they just resofted`it ..LOL) ..and it`s all peeachy. They changed the whole screen (i believe it`s called "digitizer" ) and that pesky problem is gone. Also ..before this i had a weird effect when i was scrolling through menu`s...like the screen was leaking or something, but now it`s gone.To anyone else that bumps into this problem (i see that the HTC One has this problem as well) ...well,there`s no way around this unless you replace your digitizer.Cheers

Help! Touch buttons on Galaxy S4 are unresponsive!

Suddenly, the touch capacitive buttons "back", and "menu" became unresponsive. I have to press on them multiple times to get them to work. Sometimes I need to press around 10 times to get a response. Phone is in great condition. Wasn't dropped, no water, no issues whatsoever.
Any way to fix?
This "might" be a software issue too, because when I do finally get the buttons to respond, the phone reacts to several presses not just to one. Example: the back button will go back several screens when it finally responds.
Please note: Reboot does not help. Turning completely off and on, doesn't help either. Problem persists.
I have absolutely no idea if you are rooted or not, running a custom rom or on stock touchwiz. I've got nothing to go off of. If it's all stock, return it I guess.

Hey ibex333 I checked into your problem and I would advise going to a Best Buy Samsung Rep and ask them to reflash you firmware saying that your softkeys aren't working. If that doesn't work last chance is to call at&t and ask them to replace your phone saying hardware malfunction. Hope this helps.

I would only do those things as a last result unless you are on MF3 (OP never said). If on MDB or MDL, try a factory reset first or try re-installing the stock MDL firmware through ODIN and then try a factory reset. If it's a hardware issue, the problem will persist and you might not have an option except warranty repair.
If you are already on MF3, then it is OK to try Best Buy or warranty fix / exchange to begin with.

If it's on MF3 lets suppose isn't rooted, a factory reset wouldn't help or what could happen ?
it's the display conector ...had the same problem ...it started with the display going almost black ...i deconcted the display, put it back then the display was going but the capacitive buttons not ...did the same for about 3 times and they get on ...i think some pins didn't made contact well
