Galaxy S6 finger scanner on the Note 4? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just wanted to know if there is a hardware difference between the S6's finger scanner and the Note's because I like Samsung's implementation (aka TouchID) on the S6 and it just more convenient for everyday use .
And just lets say there isn't a difference between the two is it possible a software update will make this happen?
Thanks in advance! [emoji1]

unfortunately, the difference, to my understanding, is almost all hardware.

So we're going to be stuck with the impractical swipe finger scanner?![emoji30]
But I can see the home button on the S6 is about the same size compared to our Note.
Thanks for the reply! [emoji2]

It seems that way. Honestly, since the days of my Moto Atrix, I do prefer this style since it seems to be more secure as it gets more of the fingerprint.

Yeah maybe you're right but I'm gonna wait for the ported S6 ROM to come for the phone and see.
This is going to be interesting! [emoji1]

Decision: Note 3 v. Galaxy S V

Hi all... I'm a long-time lurker, first-time poster. I want to thank you for all your help and analysis in smartphones.
I had a Galaxy S 4 for so long, and I'm stuck with the tough decision of choosing between a Note 3 or waiting a few more weeks for the SV.
I consider myself a power user, and I think the stylus is really cool. Do the new perks of the SV outweigh the features of the Note 3?
I'm a business professional, so the Note 3 does have that appeal--but I'm concerned that many people don't end up even using the stylus.
Your thoughts are appreciated. PS, I'm sorry if I've posted this in the wrong forum.
Shoot... I just read Jonny's sticky about questions... sorry mods. Please move this to the Q&A forum.

I just came from getting my Note 3, I sold my Xperia Z1 to get this, I like this phone, looks cool, and is fluid but I need to root and put a custom rom, I hate the bloatware, also I want a few tweeks, the phone its great, for me it just need a few tweek, S5 is nothing from other world, I think that some guys here will port some stuff from S5 to Note3, so i will say go for the Note 3, its almost the same, note 3 has 3GBs of ram instead of 2.

Cool, thanks for your opinion. I agree that 3GB is better than 2GB. I wonder if the processor specs of the SV are that much better than the Note 3.

S4 and S5 are jokes comparatively.

Believe me when I say that Snapdragon 800 is enough, and 801 is just a variant with a few tweeks.
The USB 3.0 it is great, the phone charges faster and the baterry is great same as Z1.
And im not an artist and my handwriting sucks but I use it a few times, also the apps for the pen are cool, this is my first day with the note, the only thing I hate is knox, i want to root so bad.

Note 3. I've owned it for almost 5 months now.
Although I don't use the stylus a lot, the phone itself is very fluid. The only downside I see is its camera in low light conditions. I'm quite sure the S5 wont be that much of an improvement even though they say its heaps and bounds better than the s4, with how samsung does its business recently, I'm skeptical.
So yeah, 3 GB > 2 GB. Fingerprint scanner? Heartrate scanner? Slightly better camera. Nah, the functionalities of the stylus still is more beneficial than those things.
Also 33% increase in price for the S5 than note 3 doesnt appeal to me
I had the same dilemma,
I took Note 3 and I'm glad, perfect device for everyday office work, watching movies, for social networks etc.
updated my N3 to KitKat and need to say, that battery life on 4.3 was better but it might be my impression only,
but anyway: very good device,
The S5 is a lesser device compared to the Note 3.
It has less RAM, smaller screen, no Spen... The only thing it has is a fingerprint scanner and 3MP more in the camera.
As for the heartrate scanner, this one works on the Note 3 and the results match my pulse meter: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.runtastic.android.heartrate.lite
I wouldn't even consider the S5.
S5 is basically a smaller Note 3 with a slightly improved camera sensor and less ram. So size is really the biggest practical difference, since I don't think you'll have problems with 2GB ram.

Note 3 is cheaper. And better. Did I mention that it's cheaper? And better? I don't think I said that it's cheaper and better yet.
Go for a note 3 I'd say. The s5 is really lackluster when it comes to features. The note 3 is the only phone next to the note 2 I've owned that allows me to not use my pc so much. It's an all in one media device that just works.
Sent from my SM-N9005 beast of a phone.
Just close your eyes and buy note 3. I can guarantee you that you will have happy face. Also for the reasons you have mentioned, note series is for you. Stylus is really functional for those who know how it works
Once you move to note series, you probably won't ever go back to S series. Just one advice is that try to find on a cheaper price as you might have to move to note 4 later this year
The specs are better, and so is the price. The n9005 wins easily

Note 3 pros:
-3GB RAM
-Higher storage options
-S Pen
-Bigger screen
S5 pros:
-Water and dust resistance.
-Better camera (heaps ahead according to some camera shots)
-Heart rate sensor and a fingerprint sensor
-Better UI (although this might come with an update or get ported)
-Faster processor (not by much but faster)
-Smaller screen but with better PPI
So, it really depends, look at the benefits of both models carefully and get what suits you more.
I got a Note 3 because I'm sticking to the Note line from now, my upgrade will be the Note 4.
Right now i have note 3- it is great phone but why is from plastic. I was paid over 500 pounds. Now after few moths start scratching. I was hope the next s5 will be from premium material but isn't and I disappointed. My new phone will be xperia z2 or HTC ONE M8. This is just my opinion.

Because most metal bodies on phones cause problems. You can't replace the battery. They scratch and scuff way more than plastic. The money you paid was for what's inside, not what's outside.

I highly recommend the note 3 over any other phone. The s5 is the best phone of "normal " proportions (alongside the nexus 5) but you won't get a phone that compares to the note 3 until the note 4 surfaces.

Are you gonna upgrade Note 5 to Galaxy S7?

Just a quick survey to find out if and why
No. Only things better on S7 is IP68 and microSD slot. It will be great to see this in N6.
For the moment for me N5 is better than S7
Nope, none of the new features are a must have for me

How is Marshmellow treating you?
It's a marketing strategy game, nothing is so that amazing with the S7/edge just few upgrades to the S6 which were on the S5, they are bringing back the old features to attract customers, and thats gonna happen to the note 6, micro sd, bigger battery capacity and maybe IP68
Nope. S pen and screen size. Will wait for Note 6

Yep Note 5 camera stand tall, nothing to be ashamed off. i would like to test the S7 Edge personally to see how camera perform in low light, then probably wait for Note 6 as it will have 4000mah at least.
No
I ordered an S7 edge, but keeping my note 5 too.
I am looking forward to the smaller screen in the S7 - I am not a huge fan of large phones though. Water resistance is also something I will use, so that's welcome.

I absolutely love my Note 5 but that S7 edge is damn sexy. I'm really tempted but I think I'll try and wait for the Note 6.
Unfair poll, if it was a note 6 vs our beloved note 5 with outstanding features built in the upcoming note, our votes would be mixed then. I don't see much added value in switching to a lower powered version of my phone. Without a pen.

TMobile users with phone already -- Fingerprint Scanner Question

Is it better then the S5 and s6 when it comes to fingerprint recognition? Seems apple really nailed it with their release on the Apple Iphone 6s and I am hoping Samsung uped their game on the s7 edge. The S5 was awful because you had to swipe down and sometimes I was to fast, to slow, or didn't get all my print. I see people with an Iphone simply push button and presto; instant access.
Oh boy it is a beast. Lol. Haven't had a miss yet. It's really fast and accurate.

I haven't received my s7 edge yet, however, I have owned the S5 and currently s6 edge in addition to having an ipad air 2. The s5 was definitely a hassle but I haven't had many problems with the s6 edge. Sometimes I have to swipe up to unlock then rest my finger to scan (might just be a software issue). But the scanner itself is way better than the S5. With my ipad air, I just hold and go. It works seamlessly. I'm hoping the s7 edge gets a little closer to working as well. I should have the s7 by tomorrow so I'll check back in.

So excited now! I hated and went away from fingerprint on the S5 because it was a nightmare! Sometimes it wouldn't take the right finger but would accept another. LOL real secure!

infinitely better than S5, definitely better than S6 (faster and more accurate)
Pretty sure its the exact same one that's in the s6. No reason to change it really. Never had an issue with it on my s6. Havnt had an issue with it on my s7e. I will say, adding new finger prints is WAY faster. But that's software related I think. 6.0.1 crushes lollipop.
I put my same thumb in three times and it's 100% accurate. The only thing I don't like is that the scanner doesn't work with the screen off. You shouldn't have to power the phone on in order for it to work.
I used the same trick as above to increase accuracy. Each thumb was added twice and I make sure the second run is from all the off angles you sometime approach the scanner with. It's faster than the Note 5 mainly because Google is requiring all phones with scanners to use their API for implementation, whereas Samsung used their own for all devices shipping without 6.0.1.
https://youtu.be/JAcczAYDmWc
Here is a link that compares which fingerprint scanner is faster (among other things). It looks like sgs7 edge is faster.
Sent from my SM-G925T
I have to agree with everyone. I just came from the Note 4 and it is a hell of a difference. You dont really need fidget or mess around with it anymore, it just works perfectly every time. Such a simple way to unlock the phone now and yet still secure.
It's great and pretty fast now I can even use it on my bank of america app. My wife has a 6s plus and it is just a tad bit faster than mine. I'm coming from the V10 and was getting really frustrated with the fingerprint not working with a case on, on the s7e I've had no problems yet
It's been hit or miss for me. I'm getting about 70% accuracy right now. Not nearly as accurate my LG V10 was, but I am getting used to using the thumb and not the index finger on the back of the V10.
Hit or miss for me. That's why I disabled it. About 8/10 times it worked. When it works it's fast and noticeably faster than my note 5.
Hit and miss here as well. No where near as good as the Nexus 6P. I really wish I didn't have to turn the phone on first, but that's just because I've been spoiled by the 6P.
I've since disabled the fingerprint scanner.

Missing my Note 5 - VS S7

I've been using my new S7. It's beautiful and elegant. The design is very polished and it feels great in the hands.
Performance is great and battery life is great.
And yet I MISS MY OLD NOTE 5 :crying: .
So if you're thinking about switching, try and think about what you will really need, because it's really hard to switch from a Note.
I can understand. Not sure what one would miss apart from the Spen.
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
I lost my Note 3 in train journey some 2 years ago. They i purchased S5 for some change. Then i realized sonething missing and after 1 month of usage i again purchased Note 3 that time. Samsung Note series is the beast.
well i had the s7 edge for 2 days after i returnd it, coming from note 4 and now i have a note 5 and i like it more than the s7, bigger screen with better colors, better audio, speakers, spen, my avengers themes, etc.
I've played with both S7 versions and neither feel like an upgrade at all. Quite the contrary, actually. Downsized screen, no S Pen, and the extra power they have compared to the Note doesn't translate to a UX improvement that's worth losing what the Note has. This thing is plenty fast. I'll wait for the Note 6.
I was thinking of getting the s7 edge but after reading your post I'll wait till the note 6 comes out. Cheers.

Anyone jumping to the Note 7?

Is anyone jumping from their S7 Edge to the Note 7?
If so or if not, what are your reasons behind it?
Sent from my SM-G935F using XDA-Developers mobile app
The only way I would is if my S7 Edge was still within return policy. Otherwise I cannot see how anyone could logically justify paying the full price for a Note 7 if they already have an S7 Edge.
Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk
Nah, very happy with the S7 Edge, the best phone I've ever owned. I enjoyed the stylus on my Note 3, but not to the point where I'd bother with the extra expense of another upgrade only 4-5 months into a 24 month contract. Also, thanks to Vodafone messing me around at the start of the contract in March I have a deal I'd never get on the Note 7, paying only £75 a month for two S7 Edge phones (one for me and one for the wife) with unlimited mins/texts and 15gb of data a month per phone. With 2x Spotify premium accounts thrown in for free.
Besides, the differences in terms of hardware is negligible and this forum has already started introducing roms based upon the Note 7. From what I can see, the stylus and Type-C USB are the only real differences under the hood.
sounds like entering funny (sorry but I think iris scanning is funny and will not have health/radiation certificate for eyes) space station with low fuel (3500mah) and many other problems (possibly battery drain, bad firmwares, questionable IP68 and Gorilla Glass, camera problems -like pink dots in HDR on, bad front camera quality) by paying 850€ to the ticket. Definitely stay in S7 Edge and wait Nougat...
It has an iris scanner (wich needs you to swipe the screen first and then calibrate and then whatever the f..) (wich doesnt work in the dark) (fingerprint - max 2 seconds / iris scanner - 4-5 seconds *you need light.) and a stylus. Thats an s7 edge with those 2 things. The stylus is ok for drawing. Period. If you have a hand to hold it you have fingers.
Perfromance - s7 scored 140k benchmark points when it was first released. Note 7 scored 144k. It has a newer software but with android nougat we will have the same software with little changes.
Is note 7 better? Yes.
Do i feel the urge to change my s7 with a note 7?
No,because im not that guy wich films both phones at 240f/s to see that one is faster by 2 nanoseconds.
Phones should be changed at every 2 years. Maybe once a year if it really has "a gallaxy of possibilities" more than the older phone has.
Changing my phone from 5 to 5 months? For a stylus? NOPE.
If 1.2k $ were my lunch money yea i'd change it,but as it isn't..no.
I really dont feel the need for a better phone. I feel the need of 2k games and apps, wich actual gameplay and funny stuff i like. Even with my Grand Prime all the apps were buttery smooth...more or less. Grand prime has a 20k points on antutu,my personal s7 has 134k. If i dont feel that difference i wont feel a 10k points difference.
Again - note 7 is a beast. I'd buy it if i had a flip phone, but i have the s7 edge. It doesnt worth the upgrade.
Why change.
Same soc
Same ram size.
No performance improvement only more bloatware because of the pen.

Had I not got the 7Edge a few months back ... yes, I probably would buy the Note.
As is, there is minimal difference so I won't spend to much thought on it.
The phone I keep an eye out for now is the LG V20. - It's the only one of interest for me for now. Lack of weather proofing could be a deal breaker though.

cause I'm asking why u talk about a LG phone on the note 7 thread :v
I'm thinking about it. I got my s7e free. Reason I'm thinking about it besides the nice little improvements is
1: the screen size. I came from an LG V10
2: More internal memory
3: iris scanner actually sounds awesome. I'd mostly use the fingerprint sensor more for unlocking but Samsung is said to be working with banks to incorporate it with mobile banking.
I actually think the pen looks cool but not exactly sure how much I'd use it. USB type c also looks bad ass but could be a pain not having a ton of them laying around.
@QBerto I believe he was talking about LG in response to the comment above his.
@hello00 The G4 and V10 we're tons better. Don't know about the G5 but seemed like they were in the right direction.

The screen size difference between the Note 7 and S7 Edge really isn't worth the upgrade. I came from a Note 3 (same screen size as the Note 7 at 5.7") and I barely noticed the difference.
If I didn't have JOD probably not. Since I do why not. The monthly price is a little more by a few dollars I think, and I get the pen back. Not to mention the blue color.

My biggest mistake was selling my S6 Edge+
The S7 Edge display is - in my opinion - more disturbing than helping. Good phone yes but the curved display is making more mistakes than it is helpful.
Just my opinion. If the S7 - NOT EDGE - would be availibe in 5.5" or 5.7" I would change to asap.

might consider it if t-mobile throws in a BOGO on the notes, like with the s7 edges, where i got additional 2 gear vrs and 2 year of netflix.
