5.1 OTA upgrade error - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am on 5.0.1 rooted with stock ROM and stock kernel. I recently got 5.1 upgrade notification.
After downloading the data and restarting the phone, it started installing updates and after a while it showed "error" and stopped.
Now I m on 5.0.1 with no 5.1 upgrade notice.
What is wrong and what should I do for this?
Thank you.

Do I need to unroot? I am on stock kernel and ROM.

Yes, you need to unroot before you can apply the OTA upgrade. Look for the Nexus Root Toolkit, and it should be able to clean up for you.

But prior I didn't need to unroot to upgrade anytime! To upgrade JB to KK or KK to LP, I didn't unroot before installation.

you need stock recovery to update via OTA

Yeah I was on pure stock. Stock ROM kernel and recovery.
Btw, I unrooted my phone with simply unroot and then OTA update went well.
So now I am on stock 5.1 unrooted.
Thank u all.

i have troubles as well. i unrooted, installed stock recovery (via n4 toolkit) and tryed to install. it takes longer then before but i stell get an error. SuperSU is gone in my app drawer.. any other help?
PS: i am on stock rom 5.0.1
i tryed to use sideload ADB update. it says: "/system/bin/app_process32" has unexpected contents. Error in sideload/package.zip. Status 7
any tipps?

[Q] OTA 4.3 without losing CWM Recovery?

My Nexus 7 is a stock 4.2.2 rooted and has CWM recovery. The 4.3 OTA offering has arrived. Is there any way to actually allow it to update and still have CWM? I assume that with CWM I can flash something that will return root.

After the OTA, just re-flash CWM or TWRP, and then use it to flash the latest SuperSU update.
How did that work out for you?
I have the same setup. Stock 4.2.2, rooted, CWM. But when I accepted the OTA it error'd out so I rebooted and never saw the OTA update again. Tried manually updating via "system" settings menu. I don't recall the error. Now I'm not sure how to get and install 4.3....and without ANY impact on data.
Thanks!

This happened to me too. In my case it was because I was running the hybird 84/33 modem for LTE on 4.2.2 and the update fails when it checks whats currently installed. As in your case after the failure the update is no longer available.
I went and flashed the original 48 modem (for 4.2.2) from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087227
and then followed the update instructions on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2378413
after which I reflashed the hybrid modem. It worked and I'm now on 4.3 with root, CWM recovery, and LTE.

Error updating from 4.3 to 4.4

I'm having difficulties updating from 4.3 to 4.4.
So, bear with me as I am a noob at this stuff, but when I got my Nexus, I rooted and flashed LTE onto the phone. I did not install TWRP, I just did a temporary custom recovery. Now, when I receive the OTA update, it stops around 25% of the way through, with an Error! and the red yield sign and the Android laying on its side.
I reset my phone, however, that didn't do anything. I think I have to undo the LTE before 4.4 can install. Maybe.
Could anyone offer suggestions/help me with this?
Thanks in advance.
To make the OTA update work you have to be unrooted running stock kernel and stock recovery. Otherwise you will get an error when updating OTA. First backup all your files to a computer.
- Download 4.4 custom ROM and flash it via recovery. Make sure to flash the latest boot loader and kernel.
OR
- Download stock 4.4 image file; unzip and run the flash all file. This will wipe everything in your phone and install stock 4.4.
OR
- Download N4 toolkit and flash 4.4 via that.

Update from stock rooted JB to Kitkat?

Could anyone give some info on what's the easiest way to get to a rooted stock Kitkat rom?
I'm currently running a rooted stock 4.3 rom with a couple of xposed modules with Team Win Recovery.
I can't update through the settings menu, because my phone is rooted, so i'll have to do it manually. Preferably I would like to update without the loss of data, just like an official update. It's no crisis if I have to though, I can always make a backup if I have to do a full wipe.

Flash the official KitKat update through Odin. You shouldn't lose any data. The root using CF- Auto Root

[Q] How do i get my phone back to official after unrooting?

Hi, i have a i9505 and had rooted it while it was on android 4.4, i have just unrooted it via the option in supersu and updated to kitkat via kies, i am coming up to selling this phone soon and realised that when i try to update via OTA even on kitkat its still showing the phone as custom and saying that ota cant work because the phones been modified.
How do i fix that and get it back to official? if i install kitkat via odin will that force it to be official?
Thanks
James
You can still go back to stock, even though you are unrooted you still have customized firmware and binaries. Use odin flash a fresh stock kitkat and it should be good as new.
Thank You

rooted - trying take OTA lollipop dont care about keeping root

i was able to take part one of the update which i think did something to Root....when I open SuperSU it says cant install binary, may need to re-root. I don't want root anymore. I tried second OTA update and fails.
I'm guessing i just have to odin flash a stock img?...my question is, can i do the lollipop one? or do i have to do kitkat and just take the OTA? also, does it matter which version of kitkat or lollipop?
thanks!
download the latest stock rom from somewhere, and flash with odin or flashfire. That should be all you need to do.
thanks...just flashed one of the lollipops and worked great! didnt have to even kept data and custom went away!
