AppBrain - Mobile Ad Networks

Hey guys,
I have been using AppBrain for a while and they have a steady revenue.
Recently I noticed that if you have a actionbar menu icon that leads to their appwall the revenues are even nicer ( around 8$ a day).
As well they provide a platform for sending remote settings and even showing alert dialogs from their console configuration which can be nice for testing things or showing/hiding ads without needing to update the application.
As well they provide nice analytics for every app with their sdk.

[APP][UPDATED Nov 24, 2008] TickerTape 0.5.1 - Get Stock Quotes & Charts!

Since we have all been having fun watching the stock market recently, I decided to write a quote/chart app, using the style of that fruity excuse for a phone as a springboard. So I present for your enjoyment an app called "Ticker Tape".
Notes:
Requires .Net CF 3.5
See the 2nd post for revision history and features.
Please read the FAQ and the planned Future Features - your question or suggestion may already be there.
See this post for a version translated into Russian. Resource files will be supported soon for translation into whatever languages you want.
As always, your thoughts and bug reports are appreciated!
UPDATED Nov 24, 2008 to version 0.5.1 (see next post for revisions)
To Avoid Losing Your Custom Lists:
The install might overwrite your data file. If you want to keep your existing lists, make a copy of TickerTape.dat before installing, and copy it back after installing.
Many thanks to those who have donated to this project!
:: dlugo, Tazkika, pwhooftman, mhoesch, 69alfa, romant,
:: fryman, ld-runner, zcai2672, rspman, vadim_bogaiskov
:: Sperbs, arcsvibe, klassej
Your continued support might inspire me to actually finish it.
.
Features
Create and edit ticker lists
Download quotes and charts for the symbols on your lists
Show charts for period ranging from 1 day to 5 years
Show charts in line, bar, or candlestick format
Show chart fullscreen
Completely touch-friendly
Scroll through lists and tickers using touch screen buttons, gestures, or D-pad
Set the download (refresh) rate from 5 seconds to 30 minutes, or Never
Settings for download behavior, and chart caching
Integration with AppToDate for automatic updates
Note: "Compare To" will be expanded later so you can get charts comparing any tickers.
FAQ
Can you add the ^XYZ index and the XYZ stock to TickerTape?
NO. The data is downloaded from Yahoo, because it is the only free service I know of. If Yahoo doesn't have it, then I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do about it for this app.
The data is not scraped off a web page, so sites that display the data you want (even Yahoo's own real-time quote pages) are not useful to Ticker Tape.
Yahoo (and therefore Ticker Tape) has information for a lot of the world markets, but there are some markets it does not provide. Again, I'm sorry, but that's just how it is.
How do I get quotes for Company X?
Find the ticker symbol here, and add it to Ticker Tape.
I added a ticker, but there's no data. Why?
You probably need an exhange extension at the end of the ticker. Find the correct ticker symbol here.
Where can I get a list of indices?
Here for US indices, or here for major world indices.
Where can I get a list of currency exchange symbols?
Here
How do I get the price of Gold, Crude, Lean Hogs, and other commodities futures?
Use the symbols found here
What stock exchanges are available in Ticker Tape?
A list of them is here.
How long are the quotes delayed?
This depends on the exchange. The delays are listed here. Most indices are real-time.
How much data is downloaded?
Quotes: ~80 bytes per ticker (~480 bytes for a full list)
Charts: ~2.5KB each
Can Ticker Tape do [insert feature here]?
Yes, of course it can. The next version will do your laundry too.
I installed it on my non-VGA device, and it looks funny.
Ticker Tape was initially designed for VGA. This *is*, after all, a forum for Diamonds. The latest version has been tweaked to support QVGA, but there might be some areas that still need work. It does not and will not have support for square-screen devices.
Future Features
Custom symbols for "Compare To" charts
Implement settings for download rate in off-market hours
Search feature to find ticker symbols
Adjust times based on regional settings
D-pad navigation in menu and other places.
Ability to rearrange/insert lists and tickers
Advanced ticker properties, such as notes, held positions, and alarms
Ability run in a TF3D tab - THIS DOES NOT SEEM TO BE POSSIBLE AT THIS POINT - See this post
More adjustments for non-VGA resolutions
Import/export lists

keep working... I have faith
GeckoDev, I'm still waiting for a decent stock app and this looks very promising. I'll be an avid supporter if you keep developing.
My only suggestion, and you've probably already thought of this, would be to include enough options in settings for what happens over the data connection based on the usage of the app.
For example: have checkboxes/choices in settings for options like such as:
-Continue streaming in realtime when program is minimized
-Prompt user that data is still streaming when program is minimized or unfocused after: (then add choices for 30 sec, 1 min, 2 min, 3 min, etc)
-Do not download any data when program is minimized
-Only update manually
-Update every: (choices of times)
You get the idea, something like that. The point being that those of us that don't have unlimited data connections, warnings and settings should be there to prevent accidental overages of data usage. A streaming stock app would be a very easy app to end up forgetting is on and using data and causing overages, whereas at least with a broswer, you're most likely eventually just going to end up parked on one page with no further data being streamed, if you accidentally leave the browser open.
It seems great, I willing to wait for this.
very nice, looks good as a start
will be following this thread
exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks

I like those options. I had planned on the last two already, but the first few for what to do when minimized are great ideas.
And here I thought I was taking a day off ...
I have been searching for a suitable charting program for over three years. I have tried them all and consider all of them unsuitable. I have had to make my own local HTML files with links to www.stockcharts.com/avantgo mobile charts to deal with the shortcoming.
This Apple-like program would be awesome. If you put this on Handango, I would buy it.
Recommendation: as a first attempt, you could do a lot worse than the Apple interface, so I say stick with it for the first version.
Are you using Yahoo! data for this? I prefer Bloomberg, but Yahoo is OK.

Yes, Yahoo is the only free feed I know of. The Bloomberg feed costs several thousand in subscription fees. Some apps out there screen-scrape to get their data, but I think that approach is prone to error, so I'm just getting the raw data, which is why it downloads so few bytes.
The problem with the Yahoo feed is the delay, even though I'm telling it to send me real-time quotes. It appears to ignore that part (except for indexes). Does anyone know of a free feed that provides real-time data?
Yes, this is fantastic. I think MSNBC has a feed, but not sure of how interactive it is (think I read that somewhere from a developer). Very pleased with the appearance, and look forward to customizing to my portfolio.
FYI...I selected "This is amazing" in your poll, and not the second one. I felt it unfair to send you half of my gains since you're not willing to take half my losses (down 56% in the last 45 days...UGH).
Your application looks fine
Great job. It's a pre-pre-pre version and needs a lot of development but it looks fine ;-)
looks great! will love it!
Very cool app, would love to see this go further

I don't know of any that are free unfortunately. All the services want "power-trader" subscription fees to be able to get true realtime. If anyone finds a true free realtime feed, let us know!
In the meantime, a delay is fine with me since I won't be making spot trading decisions based on what my phone is telling me at any given second.
I have just updated the cab to version 0.2 -- you can now edit the quote lists and set the download rate!
Check the first post...
this is so great, thank you so much for your work, i have been waiting for something like this for a long time. and it's so easy on the eyes.
very nice apps, need to add some error handling in case of wrong symbol, the app just crush.

Oops! It's fixed now.
This program is amazing. I like it very much.
Just some ideas for further development.
1. Please add an "exit" command. I don't know how to exit this program.
2. For the updates, please add a timer on it since market time is only from 9 to 4pm.
3. can you make it response to direction keys?
Thanks.

Kick ass apps wanted

Need an apk that signs my update.zip files from titanium blackup.
I don't understand why it hasn't been done. The code to do it is already in java! Search the forums for testsign.jar
I know everything you need to do to get it done but I don't have a development environment at my disposal. Help me out and I'll show you how to convert your jarred up code libraries to run on android!
Please and Thank You.
* edit - this question has been solved by brainmaster! ZipSigner if you find this application helpful please thank him below.

New application proposal: ZeroNetAccess (ZeNA?)
Concept: an app that can block other apps network access.
Market alternative: DroidWall (root only, low market potential)
Methods: Maybe by modifying the apk manifest and resigning? Im not sure if there is a framework you could subclass for this.
Why: i turned off stats reporting for an app and i saw it writing reports to the web from logcat. Google took our rights away by not letting us do this from the application settings. Its my device and i have to pay the bill not google or the rude ppl who made the app. I will never understand why we were not given the right to administer mobile data access rights.
Potential: highly lucrative. People want to save money nowadays. In that respect voiding phone warranty for root access may not sit well with potential customer.

For rooted devices try DroidWall
Application Proposal: Web Page to PDF/HTML Safari Plug-In
Concept: Seriously?
Why: Cant save pages from the browser I safari always reloads the page when you come back to it from other activities (pointless nethog!) whats the friggin cache for anyway? It is better to save an article copy that you could view on the computer later or add to your info library if you write books or do any kinda technical research than it is to save a bookmark that may become 404 not found. Researchers nightmare!
Methods: execute shell command wget on page source. Use regular expression to get media list. Build directory tree. For each media call wget. Done.
Potential: medium. Not many people are so technically inclined.
Usefulness: extremely high, especially with zip/+email caps.. Roundabout source code viewer for nosy/curious folks.
Average potential, stream lehigh usefulness I would sell for a buck 99. Free (1 ad per saved page, no zip email)

Application proposal: WarBastard
Concept: wardriving app featuring google my maps! Maps are shared globally by locale. Signals can be pinpointed by triangulation through cross reference of mac address, signal strength and previously detected locations in a global locale based database. While we are at, throw in a google navigation intent, and a compass with distance to closest accesible AP! Dont stop there! I wonder where that cell tower is located?
Purpose: to aid weary travellers and cheap bastards to connect with their loved ones and services over open networks. Services could also be used for cellular network signal diagnostics across hundreds of thousands of devices.
Potential: astronomical I would pay 5 bux. Better yet 12 bucks per year. Free (1 ad per download of database, 1 ad per connect to AP. Possibly integrated with APs for increased revenue potential across the board.) The map data can also be used to find good places to set up an advertising AP 4 even more potential earnings.
Anybody wanna pay me to sit around and do this all day? Lol.
SERIOUSLY you are looking at my qualifications. Asking 50k p. yr. to start Project Mgr./Analyst/Sr. Developer. consulting options available. Willing to relocate. Pm for inquiries/proposals.

You should use the search function: ZipSigner.
It implements in the Titanium Backup and signs it on your wish.

You are correct. I should never have assumed that this wasn't already in the market. Actually I didn't really plan to use this to sign titanium backups. For my purpose however the concept is the same.
* edit Human beings arent the fastest search engine but collectively we are the most accurate information sources on the planet. feel free to quote me on this
I thought that it would be better to ask someone who might know than it would be to search for something that may not exist. If I had access to a computer I would have no questions to post. Only answers! Being that I am stuck on my android for the time being, I appreciate all the help I can get!
Thank you for providing me with another helpful for resource!
* Edit: Dear brainmaster, words cannot express my level of gratitude! I am truly overjoyed by the passing of this shortcoming. New application proposal: Launchpad Homescreen Widget
Concept: a widget that will pop up an on screen menu (complete with icons) onClick similar to pc desktop start menus. Customizable shortcuts Horizontal or vertical (and scrollable) layouts by preference and Customizable folders.
Why: I would rather have a feature like this than an app drawer any day. This would allow individuals to organize launcher short cuts by task. It would also be great if it were possible to open files in the system such as pdf, video, music or text files with appropriate application. Another great feature would be the ability to launch shell scripts. I have searched the market and nothing like this was found.
Potential: high. will save customer time allow them to become more visually organized and task oriented as well as adding more visual appeal to the home screens. $5.99 I would buy it! Time limited trial only.

WP8 new features!

So with the emulator leak we have new things to look at
Namely:
- downloading maps
- Applications + settings and SMS are now able to be backed up on CLOUD (http://clip2net.com/s/29yZl)
- PIN for app purchases on store
- upgraded camera UI
- OneNote separated from Office - probably something like OneNote MX?
- IE10 has again "Find on page" option!
- Data Sense application - to measure data usage (WiFi, cellular)
- Search page is now greatly enhanced with News, In Theatres, ... (Personalized suggestions - requires Hotmail account signed in, but that doesn't work.)
- Multiple photos selection (http://clip2net.com/s/29z2y)
- More settings in Ease of access (maybe they were just US specific before that?) - text size, high contrast mode, screen magnifier throughout the system
- Ability to remap the STOP button in IE to something else - namely favs, stop/refresh or tabs
- Partial blocking of cookies (tracking cookies?)
- Lockscreen to show Bing today picture rather your own one (NEAT!)
- LOCKSCREEN TO SUPPORT CUSTOM APPLICATIONS!
- Zune Music is now called Xbox Music including reporting "what are you playing now" to Xbox
- SafeSearch settings for Bing search
- More detailed phone storage informations including buttons to move photos or music to SD card
- Native screenshots (winkey + camkey) -- thanks to wpcentral!
The list shall be updated!

I highly doubt that, didn't see any api
Here's my list, what I have found so far in the .chm file:
SmsInterceptor for capturing SMS messages
SpeechSynthesizer, SpeechRecognition - sounds good
Battery class for accessing remaining power, finally!
LockScreenWallpaper - API for changing current lockscreen
VoipPhoneCall - if you want to create your own Skype clone
SaveAppointmentTask - to save appointments into calendar
App to App and App to Device Bluetooth communication
FlipTileData, CycleTileData, IconicTileData - new types of Tiles, including that 3 size tile
Second post GREATLY updated with A LOT of images. Click on them for full resolution (WVGA).
If anybody would be interested in some kind of video walkthrough - I suppose it could happen during the weekend as well?
Also it seems to run with only 256MB RAM without a page file, so hopefully we will be seeing devices like the Nokia Lumia 610 at a low price.
anything related to wifi? I really want an option to not lose wife when phone is locked
Thanks
i still don't see myself pulling away from android. i really want to though...
I want to see the lock screen in action, and I want to see if they made any changes to the toast notifications.

i was wondering...
is VOIPcall based on skype? or a standard like SIP?
i work in a telephony company, and i'm interested in this functionnality: i already have lot of ideas of how to use voipcall in my desktop software (switching from desktop softphone to WP8 voip automatically, adding mobility to my desktop softwares, etc...)

some registry doesn't mean "it will be ok for SIP", but it's a good start
What about multitasking?
Is the multitasking the same as Windows Phone 7.5? Is the number of "freezed" apps increased? Are there any changes?
The only thing we know from MS is that VoIP apps and GPS apps will be able to run in background (or get much less limits compared to regular apps) - so apps like GPS navigation or Skype will run in background as you'd expect them.

Sideloading apps: Why some don't work

Most of us know you can install apps over ADB from a PC to run apps that weren't made for Wear. I hope we can discuss why some apps crash on launch so we can better understand Android Wear and not waste time testing apps that we know Android Wear can't launch. Here is what I have found can cause crashes and apps simply "not working".
An Action Bar
A lot of "sideloaded" apps just crash on launch and this entry in the logcat error explains why:
android.util.AndroidRuntimeException: You cannot combine swipe dismissal and the action bar.
Click to collapse
The action bar that runs along the top of most Holo design apps is "banned" from Android Wear. Developers can get around this by editing their app's code to remove the action bar or swipe dismissal ,but unless the app is open source this is useless to us users. Interestingly enough apps with Material Design action bars do launch just fine. The lesson here is to check an app's screenshots for a Holo action bar before attempting to sideload it.
Internet Connectivity
Android Wear does not have a true internet connection. Instead, Wear apps must use Google's APIs to transfer data to the phone (and the internet via a phone app if necessary). This means any app not made for Wear that requires an internet connection won't work at all. I wonder if Bluetooth Tethering a Wear watch to its host phone could fix this.
Screen size
Few apps were made with screens this small in mind. Some layouts simply don't fit important buttons within the screen, making the app useless. Bugging app developers to fix this isn't worth their time and editing the screen DPI makes Android Wear tend to crash (from what I've heard) so those apps must simply be ignored after testing.
These are the three reasons I've found sideloaded apps don't work. Please correct any mistakes I've made and contribute your own criteria if you can. I hope you found this informative!

Need help developing a lockscreen android

Hey guys, I plan on creating an app but I need some tips and/or tricks to help me get started. I do plan on releasing the app on here (Using XDADevelopers) first to get some attention, then release it on the Google Play store. Here are the details of the app:
App Type: Lockscreen Customization
Minimal SDK: API 16 (JellyBean)*
Testing Device: Samsung S6 Edge (Rooted, running Android Marshmallow)
IDE: Android Studio
Key Components:
The app must be able to detect weither the home button is being pressed (which makes the phone access to the launcher, we dont want that) and quickly intercept the action and return back to the locker
Allow to lots, and I mean LOTS of customability (Much like C Locker, which is the app that has inspired me ^^), some of these customizations include the following:
App widgets and custom widgets like images, text, sprites, etc
LED/Vibration/Notifcation settings for apps
Change speed of animations (Like NovaLauncher does), also be able to choose different types of animations for the lockscreen
Customize colors in app
Integrate Android Wear (make the watch vibrate or ring your phone is low on power, or when the connection is lost)
Different lockscreens that show whenever the conditions configured are met, similar to C Locker (like bluetooth connections, music playing, WiFi, SmartLock conditions ,etc)
This is the cricual part: MUST have several different unlock unlock, like fingerprint (Thanks to Android 6.0.1), pattern, pin, SmartLock, Slide-To-Unlock, and Gestures
Be able to integrate as a plugin for Tasker, like have tasker check for launched apps
Intregrate voice assistants like Google Now/Google Assistant, S Voice, and such others
Have high and steady performance for all phones like. Also not be a resource hog!
This may is maybe feature: Be able to do functions like override the system settings and bypass system lock via root
Utilize Material style (this is a personal preference tbh)
I will add in some more ideas I have for the app.. Actually, I haven't gotten a good name for the app, but I'm thinking of Trinity Locker.
As you can see, I have numerous of ideas for this app.. all I need is some help with creating it. I will warn you guys this, I am pretty new to Android development (I typically code on Minecraft, even created some pretty decent mods), so I need some guidance on what and how things work with the Android system. I do have some coding experience from coding mods for Minecraft and taking a class on the basics of C++. If you guys have some ideas or tips and tricks to give, I'm all ears. Thank you!
NOTE: Anything with a * means that it is subject to change!
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I did also have a chance of using MIT App Inventor so I have a small foundation of the Android development. But I am new to Android Studio, so I need some tips with using that as well.
ALSO, to crucially note, I am in high school.. So I may not have time to respond to everyone/program the app since I have majority of my classes are cross college (or to most known as Dual Enrollment or Advanced Placement (AP)) courses :crying:. Oh and I live in the Central US Timezone, so my time will be different (or the same) for most
