Microphone Broken? D801 - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have an issue with my microphone where I need to yell into it for it to have any volume at all. This behavior appears in Google Now, during phone calls, and with the Screen Recorder app (affects everywhere).
Reading a kernel thread in Android Development, I saw tons of people talking about gain and settings for the microphone, so for 3 months I chalked it up to a kernel issue in the CM nightlies I was using. Yelling into my phone in public so people could hear me haha
Since the official T-Mobile Lollipop ota came out, I decided to flash the KDZ from LG. This of course wiped out everything, recovery, new bootloader, even a new battery charging screen when dead. Clearly completely refreshed.
The issue persists.
Does anyone know what this could be? I had a similar issue when I was still in warranty, so I had the microphone replaced. I'm not sure if it did anything, I made a few test calls when it came back from warranty and it seemed to work (obviously on KK stock software for warranty shipment)
Please let me know! I wish I had an intuition with the G2 like I have had for several devices in the past, but I don't.
Thanks,
jcarrz1

May be the holes for mic is blocked with dust particles.

Would consider what he's ^^^^ saying.
Maybe worth opening the phone and cleaning out your dust from the inside out.
Especially on the bottom left where the Mic is.
Once you have it open blast the ports and speaker holes with a good amount of compressed air.
See if that makes a difference

That was it! thanks guys.
I actually used a normal staple to clean out the holes, I didn't have air or a needle handy. but it worked perfectly (I removed the back cover so I could see when they were cleaned out (by shining a light) and so that i wouldn't poke anything inside).
It's amazing how a little gunk/lint in those holes made me completely inaudible.
Thanks again.

How to repair the sound issue on Prophet
Hi
I could read a lot of posts on that issue and found this solution:
Remove the battery cover. Then the camera cover: to do so, lift up the gently the cover starting from the side of the battery.
You will see something looking like a fan. This is the speaker. the problem is with the red wire whixh connect the speaker.
Turn on your prophet and run your favourite MP3 song.
then touch the red wire with your stylus. The sound should come back. Insert a piece of folded paper to keep the cable properly fixed. that's all
Watch out not to wish to fix it too nicely, you could damage the wire !
Hope this help, otherwise a return to the service department will be necessary !
Hope this helps

Hay the paper trick works!
I went here to learn how to remove the flap to the speakers:
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=240109
Well, my speaker had the voice coil broken... touching the membrane would bring it back to life but that is no real solution. I replaced it with a speaker from a used old cellphone with some minor use of hot glue to fix it in place and seal around it.
It works now just as new.
Nir
yeah it is a real Problem.
mine is broken twice in 6 months.
tried the paper thing. but it sometimes sounds weird and there's some hissing. maybe I did it wrong. so I tweak it a bit and just lost it completely. no sound whatsoever now.
went to the service center today. they said that they have a new batch of speaker which supposed to be better than the previous one. if anyone can confirm.

That's great, this fixed my problem. After I touch the red wire with my stylus, the speaker just works fine, don't even need a folder paper.

I'll try this one myself - my speaker just died again - it's been back once already.
Well, I followed the instructions above and now I have a working speaker again. A very low tech fix to a high tech device.
I have found a small bit of sponge does the job better than folded paper.
what is the type of speaker.
i mean can i use any speaker?
what's the best?
Mohammad, you seem to have missed the point of the replies in this thread. We don't know where to get another speaker from but we do know how to make the existing one work again.
oh, dude!!!
sorry
What a piece of ugly Speaker: O2 xda Neo!
Hay Guys,
I am suffering from this nasty problem since sometime. My brother has tweaked the speakers with a metal piece seem to work. However if I use speakerphone, it goes off.
Is there a permanent solution to this constant spurce of unhappiness.
Incidently I have been blessed with a on & off camera problem as well. I think I will never buy a DOPOD product in my life again.
My Camera has those colour matrix instead of proper images. Occasionally it behaves normally. I have tried hard reset already.
Any body? help !!!!!

I wedged in a piece of foam. That's worked a treat.
The manufaturing quality of HTC is bad
I also have the speaker problem. And thanks for all of you to suggest that sponge and folder trick. I did it and i have put a small slice of ear plug sponge. For past 2 days my spearker is working. But dont know how long will this sponge give my speaker lifesupport. I am sure after few days again its going to be problem. Hey,...... is there anyone in this thread who has used sponge/paper and the speaker is working for long time.. at least a year ?.
These HTC products seem really bad quality products.
that worked

motorola l7 speaker is too a candidate
It's too bad they saved on the speaker. Guess the manufacturer of the speaker had a very nice presentation @ HTC
Trying to download that pdf file, but it's not working :/ However I've read on other occasions that people talk about that motorola speaker as a replacement. Might be worth giving a more detailed look into that.
What exactly is the problem with the speaker btw? Did anyone narrowed that down already? Why is the speaker not functioning properly?

The file contains instructions to change the original speaker using the spk of a motorola v525.
I did it yesterday, and works fine, but isn´t easy to do it

[SOLVED!] In-Call Volume Too Low... (doing my nut in!)

So after flashing every rom and radio know to man with no solution I took a can of compressed air and blew directly onto the speaker grille. I followed that by taking a sewing needle and scraping it across the grille then gently and very carefully poking into most of the holes, not more than 1mm in (so as to not puncture the speaker membrane underneath).
And voila! Call volume back to normal levels. A bunch of dead skin and **** came out during the process so i guess those things are prone to clogging up.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------OP----------
Ok, this has been driving me mad.
I have a GSM Hero and the in-call volume is horrible, i can barely hear people in anything less than complete silence.
Looked all over the web and there are a few people with the same issue but no solutions!!
Every thread is usually killed by people saying theirs is too loud, or normal, or the music player is bad or cool... NO! Problem is when answering/making a call and putting phone to my ear.
PLEASE people, I've tried flashing about 4 different roms with across 3 different android builds both Sense and AOSP. I've tried several radios and the stupid Volume Hack from the market that does nothing.
I know i'm not the only one and it wasn't like this when i bought it. So its definitely a software issue. Any ideas, i'm open. Its basically unusable as it is.
OMFG!!! Can't believe I hadn't tried this before now. I too had flashed every Rom, radio, and kernel trying to solve this problem (2 months!) I too had a good scrape around using the blunt end of a needle, it was literally caked up solid with crap. My son and wife never usually ring as I can't hear them lol. No Such problems now ) Many, many thanks m8

Took the plunge with the Microphone mod [Video added]

So I opened the back of the A500 and looked around abit and switched places with the microphone and the noise canceller. And now at least when I record, peoples voices can be heard pretty decent. Plus I drilled a hole in the 'hole' to open up the space for the sound to come in abit.
So even with the Acer case on you can hear the voices pretty well
Before you couldnt hear anything. But now the whole google voice thing isnt so easy to use since the mic is face the opposite way but I never used it anyways, plus for VOIP calls its much better to use a headphone.
Just sharing
Please feel free to ask any questions.
Cheers!
Edit: From what I saw in the back I believe the microphone could be changed to a better one some day. Just a matter of finding a good replacement.
(01/08/2011)Add: Here is a sample of the sound when you record a person speaking infont of the iconia now with my mod.
Link sample with modded microphone: [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33166156/Test.3gp
This is my son and as you can see you can hear him perfectly well
I think the noise canceller could be adjusted to 'muffle' the screeching sound abit.
Cheers!
Edit: Link was broken, fixed now.
i am really thinking about doing that. Iit easy to open the case?

Yes its actually very easy, you have to begin at the corner either left or right on the bottom of the A500 (meaning the Dock port area) you take something very thin and sturdy but be careful not scratch it up or bend to hard just make an opening maybe 2,3mm then stick something plasticky (like a protective shield cover slate) but strong and stick in the opening and drag slowly to the right until the entire left side is open (left to the Dock port I mean) and then from there you just gently lift up up until you have the whole bottom open and then you just again you the plastic tool to drag the sides (left and right) and just gently lift with the plastic tool and slowly it will loosen bit by bit once you have left and right and the bottom released then you just hold the whole thing and lift it and with will click off by itself from the upper part.
Here is a video showing pretty much what I described, its very easy:

...there's a tear down vid?
thanks, i opened it up and did some tweaking unfortunately it's only about 30% better, i also made a hole for the case as well. how much did yours improve when you did your mods. i'm guessing the rear mic has to be tweaked as well. thanks
Did you switch places with the mic and the noise canceller?
Pull the Mic out take it to radio shack and get a better set of mic to go in there.I have done this with Michael and internal speakers on notebooks. But I have Bluetooth high def headset. So no need here
this mic problem is seriously killing me.
I often use my tabto record videos but i can never hear any voices cause they are really low. So i am ready to do anything to the tab for a better microphone experience.
As far as drilling holes is concerned, i would want to know where is the mic suitated if there are two. I do noe that one is on the top of the screen in the middle gap between the metal cover n screen glass. Is there another one?
And what can be possibly done to fix or better this issue?
I even tried voip and no1 could hear me, very disappointing pls help sum1.....
i found a kind of solution on youtube...

Speaker Issue

Hi,
Has anyone encountered any issues with their speaker apart from that infamous volume balance?
My right speaker refuses to play anything but if I press the chassis of the transformer together the speaker works but stops working as soon as I let go. To me it sounds like some sort of loose connection/contact.
How easy is it to dismantle? Has anyone encountered a similar issue?
Thanks.

My left speaker doesn't work, but very occasionally will momentarily come to life. Squeezing the edge doesn't make a difference. I assume its a loose connection, but I have'nt done anything about it yet.
My left speaker doesnt have any sound at all
Hey OP, I have the same issue, except mine still plays at times, gets fuzzy and buzzy at loud volumes, then stops. However, if I press the right side together, it plays again, so it's not noticeable if I use a really tight sleeve on it, but with the loose sleeve I normally use on it .. :/
Same here, when it does play, its very buzzy. I am inclined to open it up and check if its some loose contact or something but I don't fancy messing my Transformer up as of yet lol.
No problems with either of my Transformers myself, but there were a few reports in the past of poor connections to one of the speakers on some TF units. (Right speaker, if I remember correctly.) Forum search will find them.
If my TF had these issues I would send in for repair

My left speaker quit working all together and right speaker from the start was extremely weak. I sent it to ASUS for repair with less than one week turn around and both speakers are nice now. Well worth the time to have done properly.
I'm scared of the RMA process tbh :/
I Managed to fix mine if you people are interested.
It involved disassembling the Transformer.
I took the speaker out of the "compartment" it was in, switched on the tablet and put on some music. No music came out. Pressing the speaker in sound came out but as soon as I let go the sound disappeared. I cut out a small piece of paper and folded it a couple of times and placed it in the compartment the speaker goes in.
When I put the speaker back in the paper sort of squashed the speaker in a bit which in turn kept playing music.
Its not the best of explanations but if someone has a similar issue they may be able to use that as a guideline lol
How hard is it to disassemble the tablet? Also, what tools would I need?

Its not very hard. You just need some patience as removing the bezel is the only bit you need to be careful with.
You would need a Phillips screw driver (one of the small ones) and a Torx T5 I believe was the correct size.
I used this video as a guidance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG9gEYRALtU
To remove the bezel he uses a plastic tool with a very thin edge but many people have had success simply using a guitar pick to remove the bezel. Luckily I had one of those plastic tools and was able to remove it.
Once you can see the insides:
That little black rectangle on the right is the speaker, inserting the small screwdriver in the compartment its in, you should be able to take it out and if your encountering the same problem as me, just press and hold the speaker from both sides to see if audio works.

This happened to me tonight while watching a youtube vid! Been looking through the forums for successful speaker replacements and messaged one guy already who might have the correct replacement speaker part.
Will update when I know more.
Cracking it open is very easy as long as you take it slow. I did it to fix my power button. It is pretty well known by now that the TF101 was one of the most cheaply built but still amazingly performing tablets on the market.

HD2 in-call speaker is dead after dropping from 2 stories

This is not my phone but a friend's phone that I am trying to fix. She dropped it 2 stories and the phone, due to its sturdiness, looks absolutely fine.
In any case, there is nothing wrong with the phone:
External speakers (used for playing music, watching Youtube, etc) works
When calling people, they hear me just fine [works]
However, the in-call speaker doesn't work (when I call people, they can hear me but I cannot hear them)
Here's what I have tried so far:
-putting the call on speaker works but that's probably because it switches to use the external speaker
-I reflashed her ROM but the problem still persists
-if I use headphones, I can hear the caller speaking
Any other things I can try?
P.S. I am amazed at the sturdiness of this phone!
Two stories, did you say? She's lucky.
You gotta open it up- see if the contacts of the handset speaker are in the right place. I don't think it would have gone bad.
While you are at it, make sure the antenna contacts are proper, a known problem after dropping this phone is low or erratic signal after a fall.

2ft or 2meters right?
but 2 stories high & it's still OK?
man what casing was she using?
anyways there could be a dislodge wire/ connector from that fall & luckily it's just that:fingers-crossed:

Hd2 have two speakers, front called ear speaker and back speaker which is activated on notification, playing media files and putting call on handsfree mode.
You need to check Ear speaker.
There are few movies on youtube how to open hd2, search for disassembling hd2.
Check connector on ear speaker.
If doesn't help then buy new one there on internet from 5 to 10$ if you are from States you can have free shipping.
Changing ear speaker isnt complicated just be sure to check few videos before doing it.
I have same issue atm, ill need to do this also.

Similar problem here
Hi,
I have the exact same problem you have regarding the non-working ear speaker. I inherited my phone so I don't know if it's been dropped or not, or if the non-working ear speaker is due to software and/or ROM issues. The previous owner had winmo and he said it worked fine.
I suspect it's due to software since sometimes the ear (front) speaker does work, but usually not. I've tried a bunch of different ICS ROMS (CM9, AOKP, PA, currently on Slim-ICS 4.2) and the problem remains which would seem to point to hardware failure, no? What confuses me is the fact that it sometimes (rarely) works. Most of the time I have to enable speakerphone to hear the other side of calls.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
I have enclosed a clip from logcat in case anyone sees anything weird that I'm not seeing.

Same thing for me. Im 99% sure is hardware failure, ear speaker died or it is disconnected from slot.
Why im thinking this, when gently tap back of cover where speaker is i can here like its disconnected from slot. Sometimes when i tap while in call sound come back for sec.
Next week ill dissemble my hd2 to check if its disconnected or ear speaker died.
Anyway you can buy ear speaker on net for few bucks, they are mostly for u.s. model but think its same as for eu version

Looks like this may be more common than initially thought.
Any one know of any app or diagnostic software in Android that can be used to test the rear and ear (front) speakers to determine whether this is a hardware or software issue?
I'd like to make sure this is a hardware issue before opening the phone up.
