Ha ha ha! You are funny man... Did you just say Verizon and root in the same sentence? Lol I can guarantee you that Verizon has this bad boy LOCKED down just like AT&T will too. I made the switch to T-Mobile and while the coverage is not as good, I can root and rom ALL of my devices that I paid for.

is there an OS X version? we never get love

I did the same for the very same reason. Verizon's coverage was amazing, but everything was completely locked down, so I'm now on t mobile.

The T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge will be the first Galaxy phone i've owned. I've heard about KNOX but is/has there ever been a root method for Galaxy devices that doesn't trip knox? And is it easy or possible to untrip knox?

It will probably be 6 or more months before Verizon variant is rooted,.
Note 4 is still not rooted.

@owenbeals, I noticed that you don't mention anything about the consequences of tripping Knox. There are noobs watching your stuff who aren't even sure what rooting is, much less what tripping Knox would do. I would hate to see one of them find out that they have voided their warranty the hard way on such an expensive device. IMO, it would a good idea to mention what tripping Knox does in the OP in red letters to warn people who otherwise wouldn't know.

So maybe the Vietnam ones t mobile have are having all the faults

Will there be a way to unroot (I recall the Superuser app having an option) or will we need a recovery? It's been about a year since I had an android device and rooted an android device so I don't know if the that process got any better.

You can unroot in SuperSU app

It's been a long time since I've played with custom stuff. I rooted my Evo LTE 2 years ago, and haven't been able to afford a new device since.
I'm liking the "stock" experience as I no longer like dealing with bugs. When I get my GS5 tomorrow, can I root and then just use root things like Titanium without bothering to install a custom ROM? I'm sure the answer is yes, but I've never left a phone "stock rooted" before so I'm not sure.

Yep, long as SU is installed on your system, you can do what we're you'd like, even on a stock rom. You can also use the Xposed engine for certain mods, if you don't want a custom.
Jsut depends if the if the modules that you pick work or not.

Flashing a custom recovery/kernel/ROM will trip Knox so IMO it doesn't matter about that. Plus the fact I tripped Knox on the first day!

Used towelroot method on my friend's S4, which was on a locked down 4.4.2, to see how it worked. Simple install of two apks and you're rooted with SuperSU; couldn't be any simpler. Kudos to that guy.
Not the only way to root the Verizon S4, but by far the simplest.

Towelroot

I did the towelroot on my S5 sprint phone. also, used the root checker, and said it was successful.
my question is, is this a true root? can i install roms? what is the best recovery to use?
Is there instructions out there, on how to get a recovery installed after doing towel root?
If i havent done the true, full root, how much further do i need to go, in order to start flashing roms?
Is there a true, Google Play edition rom out there for this phone?

It is a true root, but just remember you still have a locked bootloader, so you can not flash custom roms, recoveries or kernels that are not based off of TouchWiz (essentially limited to stuff built ontop of TouchWiz).
Once the bootloader is unlocked then you can do all of that.
GPE version of the phone is still a rumor, but they released the S4 GPE version around this time...
Thanks for that information.. since i dont have the bootloader unlocked, i really cant do anything.
Should i just go back to stock? is there an easy way to do this?

Yes that is correct you can't really do anything in terms of custom roms. That being said you still are rooted, so you can install titanium backup and the xposed framework and modify your phone using those methods. You still are on stock, just with an rooted phone, are you talking about unrooting the phone? I've seen things that can let you do that (like this) but I don't think your phone is supported.
I wish I could say that unlocking the bootloader is something that is as easy as you may think it is. It is extremely difficult from my understanding. I don't know a lot about it so I can't give you a good answer to be honest, but I haven't seen anything on the subject.
Just so you know, that once VZW pushes an update to your phone, you will lose root (if you update) and won't be able to reroot until a new exploit is found (assuming the update closes the exploit that towelroot initially took advantage of). This news sucks but this is just a fact of life when dealing with VZW and ATT.

Didn't realize that SuperSU Pro could maintain that even if they close the exploit in the kernel that allows them access root functionality. How is that possible?
all good info..
the reason i want to root, is in hopes of getting a true google phone. No Touchwiz.. i did install superSU. i understand that will keep my phone from getting viruses as easy.
however, my phone popped up an update icon, so i went to check if i could download the update. the message i got was..
"the operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. try downloading software updates using samsung kiel on your PC, or visit a customer service center."

Don`t think that because Towelroot doesn`t trip KNOX (atm) root will not be identified by both the phones hard- and software.
btw.. using superSU app.. you can unroot with it. it worked, and phone is now unrooted.

Verizon Galaxy s5, I'm new to rooting. What should I know?

I know the s6 is out, an I bought a S5. I'm arriving fashionably late to this rooting thing.
I have never rooted any of my devices ever, and by what I here.. Shame on me.
I need to get the most outta my phone and clean it up from factory crap. I love the ability to customize my phone, but I have no clue where to start.
An very nervous of "bricking?" my phone or messing it up. I'm tech savvy so I think it wont be to hard...? What would I be able to do with my phone when it is rooted? Will it void my warranty and can it ever go back? I remember when I first heard about rooting and people where "Bricking" phones left and right... Kinda the reason I never ventured into rooting. Well I put my big boy pants on and ready to go.. lol I would appreciate any help.
More than likely you purchased your phone already running lollipop, and if so, you can't root. Not yet, anyway.

Like the OP I, too, just bought an S5 but I bought it from a guy, NOT from Verizon. SO it's running Android 5.0 already. That's Lollipop, right?
Even though I have used Android for years I don't know all the terms (and am new to the XDA site). Is there a FAQ or something listing the basic stuff?
I got my old phone repaired -- a Samsung S3 running Android 4.4.2 -- so I presume it will be easier to learn to root, and I might want to start there.
UPDATE -- partly answering my own question by going to the xda-developers.com homepage and then scrolling to the bottom to see "root any device." I can see I still have a lot to learn, but there's some good info there

So you read in these forums that the S5 5.0 cannot be rooted, but then you ask if anyone knows how to root it. Trust me, if someone had figured out how to root 5.0 on the S5 it would be very prominent in these forums. No one knows how to root 5.0 builds of OE1 or newer on the Verizon S5. Not sure how much clearer that can be stated like it was earlier in this thread.

Will we ever get root?

So I've been looking between the S8 and the G6 to upgrade to, and I really like the S8, but I use root a lot for different things- Viper, AdAway, and just general performance things

If you are referring to the U.S. Snapdragon variants, it will be some time and it will half baked like it was with the S7 and S7 Edge. They locked the bootloader on all the Snapdragon variants and that, obviously, makes it infinitely more difficult to root. The Exynos version of the aforementioned phones had root last year and it apparently performed very well. I wouldn't expect it anytime near launch. These devs have lives, so there will be no timetable.
Also, in my opinion, Viper tends to be a little overrated, but I am just throwing my 2 cents in here.
Now that they removed the remapping functionality for the Bixby button, I will definitely want to root my device (Exynos variant).

temp root means no TWRP u could flash some stock roms with flash fire but usually made the lag battery and overheating worse for s7e

K... Thanks for clarifying.... So if by chance we do get root most likely a bigger challenge to unlock the bootloader/add custom recovery ... I guess the thing that pisses me off is the "U1" got lumped in with all the carrier "U" varients... Both have locked bootloader... I've always used exynos Galaxys on my GSM network never had connection issues... Mostly my fault cause I didn't get the international....Any recommendations for youtube ad blockers I've tried adclear but can't downgrade my youtube for some reason...

I actually think if we get either root or bootloader unlock we will get both. With how Samsung has the device locked down it is going to take someone finding a new vulnerability that allows to unlock the bootloader or root the device. But it could take a long time to find. Too many lines of code to even count.
Other option is the someone at Samsung releases the kernel source code or some sort of bootloader unlocking software. Right there is a group of debs working hard at it but they are not close. I'm rooting for them but I would not hold your breath.
Also most of the new phone will never get root anymore. LG, Motorola, Google, Samsung, HTC all are going to be completely locked down this year.

It had a bunch of overheating issues and i think some features may have been mia. the same exploit isn't available here, yet, because it relied on an early build of the 935u model, and there is no such build found for these phones, yet.

It used an eng boot which had issues with overheating, and had logging maxed out.

Its the htc u11 rooted and TWRP support? Same with the Pixel?
HTC usually always has a root solution. Probably will stay that way...

I use OGYyoutube for the ads
I've seen the term "temp root" going around. What is that exactly? I want to move a user app into my system folder to make it a system app, and I believe I need root to do this. Is there any way this is possible to do without a full root and bootloader unlocked?
No. "System" is read only.

I have the SM-G955U on Xfinity Mobile, and they will unlock the bootloader out of the box, as stated in their policy. Just giving everyone a headsup, if you want to try something new. Even funnier, I am doing a 24 month payment plan for my device, with 1 gig data (always on wifi, so it works for me) and my monthly bill is 26.42 lol.
With a unlocked bootloader, you can do an official CF Auto Root right now.

Do they physically touch the device and do it in front of you? Or does it come out of the box unlocked? I'm trying to see what I can dig up.
Edit. It seems the device came shipped with a eng bootloader. @elliwigy do you think we can use this to our advantage?
