Strange discovery about the Fingerprint Reader - Galaxy S6 General

So after using my Galaxy S6 for a few days I've noticed some strange things about the fingerprint reader.
First of all, not all fingers are equal. I set it up to my right thumb at first and this finger unlocks the phone blazing fast and never fails. I've literally never had it fail once this whole week.
If I had to guess I'd say 0.5 seconds unlock time. I decided to add my right index finger for when it's sitting on a table. My right index finger unlocks painfully slow in comparison. About 2.0 seconds. I've tested it again and again 50 times in a row and the right thumb is always 0.5 seconds and the right index finger taking 2.0 seconds. There's a huge noticeable difference. Also the right index finger will fail maybe 2/10 tries. I've tried removing the finger print and adding it multiple times with the same results each time.
I then added my left thumb thinking maybe the bigger size of the finger helps, however my left thumb unlocks noticeably slower as well it seems like 1.2 seconds, not as slow as the right index finger. Again I've tried removing and re adding this finger with no changes.
Another weird thing I noticed is that it's just the time it takes for it to "think" about the fingerprint that's longer. I can put my right thumb on the sensor for just a fraction of a second and then half a second later is when the phone unlocks, so it's already got the scan of the finger and then is just processing it I guess? And again I can put my right index finger on the sensor for just a fraction of a second and then take it off, then it just sits there longer before finally unlocking. So it seems that it has to take longer to "think" about my right index fingerprint. The actual scanning time again is very fast if I put it on and take it off before the phone actually unlocks.
I was wondering why in some reviews people claim it's faster than the iPhone 6 and in some they say it's worse. My right thumb on the S6 is much noticeably faster than unlocking my girlfriends iPhone 6 and more accurate as well (yes she let me add my fingerprint )
However if reviewers are getting the speed that I get with my right index finger I can definitely see how they say it's slower and less reliable.
Anyone else notice this?
EDIT: Just had another thought, maybe it goes through the list in order checking which fingerprint your finger is matching up to? That would explain why my first finger I added is always super fast. However it wouldn't explain reviewers/other people saying the scanner is noticeable slower than the iPhone 6 when I can guarantee it's the other way around.

When I set up my prints I used every possible angle I think I would use, from completely vertical to completely horizontal and it unlocks 95% of the time for both thumbs. I don't really notice a difference in speed with each thumb.

While I am not having he exact issue that you are explaining I did notice issues with the fingerprint unlocking. I have it connected through android wear to my moto 360 watch and that is set as a trusted device. In my nexus 6 and oneplus one this worked perfectly. If I had the watch on and connected to the phone it did not require any sort of ujlock besides just a swipe. This phone either asks for the fingerprint after I swipe or it just works like it's supposed to but does so completely random.

I've read that the depth of the print has a direct effect on the accuracy of the reader. Usually thumb prints are deeper and the pointer finger is more shallow, that fits with your data. Check your prints and let us know

Yeah my left thumb seems to be slower than my right thumb, which is pretty much instant...also the position of the thumb will determined the speed of the unlock I found out too...hopefully it can be foxed with an update

Because reviewers cannot "bite" the hand that feeds them. They get the units for free, and a lot of them are paid for the review. Its called biased journalism.

[Q] I've noticed a problem with palm rejection.

Hey guys, I just picked up my Tegra Note and I'm enjoying it, but in testing out the potential and limitations of the DirectStylus, I came across a problem and I want to find out if it's just my problem, or if it's reproducible with all Tegra Notes with the latest system updates.
Basically, I'm using the stylus, and stylus only mode is activated. This works pretty well and ignores most/all inputs from anything except the tip of the stylus.
However, I have noticed that if I slide my finger onto the screen from the outer edge/bevel, it will often (nearly 100% of the time) register this as a touch. For an example, if I tap the home button with my finger nothing happens, however if I drag my finger from just below the screen onto the home button, it will press. Likewise I cannot scroll through home screens by normally swiping my finger, but if I swipe from off screen on the left or right, it will register. Bringing down the notification area with a finger swipe, etc, all work as well when naturally this should only be possible with the stylus.
The main problem with this is when writing/drawing with my hand resting on the edge of the device. If my palm is entirely off the screen it is fine. If my palm is entirely on the screen then stylus only works, too. However, if in the process of writing my hand slides from the side onto the screen, suddenly the stylus looses focus and I'm drawing lines with my palm.
I hope I have explained this issue correctly, and I wondered if this was a known problem? If there are any solutions? Have I messed up and set an option somewhere I shouldn't have? Should I get it replaced? Sorry for all the questions!
Oh and it's not rooted or anything. Just stock, updated to the latest system version through the system updates.
Thanks, hope you can help!
I get a similar issue at the bottom left of the screen sometimes. It only seems to effect the bottom left but in both orientations so that rules out a hardware issue. Doing a quick lock and unlock seems to fix it for me and it functions fine until next time I turn on stylus mode. Seems hit and miss with no real way to replicate it.
It didn't seem to do it before ota 2.3 so I predict a hotfix for the issue. Its a minor issue, the battery life on 4.4.2 isn't however, 4-5hrs with lite use is pretty rubbish. I suspect that's an issue with the power saving features (I think it's stuck on Max performance all the time).
Would be nice if they fix the SD write issue but Google dictate that I think.
Mine was certainly a lot worse than that - persistent on all four edges of the screen and there is no way to stop it. 60-80% of the time it was manageable, but consistently reproducible, other times it was far worse and could only manage dots and dashes when I tried to write anything while resting my palm on the screen. It also developed a 'blind spot' problem I've noticed reported on a couple of forums - a spot where the stlus simply refused to draw - so I grew more concerned that I had a problem with the actual hardware. So, I took it into the store I bought it from, and they're going to replace it for me.
Hopefully I won't have a problem with the replacement one, because I absolutely love the tablet!
I've had similar problems... just remember, all of the stylus functionality is governed by software; the screen on this is simply a regular capacitive screen that's also capable of detecting the size and shape of what's touching it, and the rest is calculated by software. It's a neat idea, but in practice it hasn't held up as well as Nvidia would've liked us to believe. Now that I've had a Galaxy Note 2 for a couple months, I have to say that the active stylus experience blows the TN7 away, but then again it's a much more expensive technology to implement. I almost always used a pencil with my TN7 while it was my day-to-day work buddy since I found the stylus to be too sticky and hard to write with... I also found several of the issues I was having weren't as bad while using a pencil, so maybe you could give that a try. Also, remember that if the screen is dirty that it will affect the stylus's performance as the screen is so sensitive that even a little moisture could register as a touch on the screen.
I received my replacement tablet today, and it is a lot better than the one I previously had. While the problem is still there, it is far, FAR better than before. Now it seems to be a minor nuisance, rather than a consistently reproducible problem. On top of that it has a much more vibrant screen - less yellow and washed out - and no 'dead zones' when trying to write with the stylus. So while I am certain software has an impact on performance, there must have been something weird going on inside the hardware of my previous device, too.
Considering the price, the fact that others have had similar issues, and how much I like about everything else - I'm very happy with my new TN7 now!
Have same problem .... When i swipe from left or right side of the screen it detects stylus nd do all the things.... Dont knw wat to do amazon is not replacing too the tablet..!
Same problem, I don't usually mind it other when I'm using an app like sketchbook pro, it becomes really annoying.

Quick Hack To A Faster Finger Print Scanner

Hi guys,
I went through some reviews and my own experience too, and observed that the fingerprint scanner gets slower ans you increase the number of fingerprints towards 5.
More the fingers, more the time and more slower the scanner!!
So here is what i figured out -
Our OnePlus 2 scanner is not like touchID in the sense that it DOES NOT make us scan all parts of the finger. It does ask for the print multiple times, but it does not compel you to do it with all parts of the finger.
so here is what i did -
start scanning for 1 finger - do around 60-70% of scanning with your major finger ( eg thumb ) and then do the remaining 30 - 40% with another finger ( like index finger )
This way , I have 4 fingers configured in 2 prints. One for left thumb and index and one for left thumb and index. I did major part thumb and minor part index finger.
Also, make sure when you aree scanning any finger, you hold the device in various ways you generally do in daily usage and scan your fingers at all those angles. :good:
This hack has let me have around 96-98% accuracy and its really quick!!
Try it and cast your votes above!!
Cheers! :highfive:
will bear this in mind when i get mine today
So how much slower does it get per added profile? I've got my doubts about accuracy too..

3 fingers was quite slow for me...
2 fingers is fast... Idk how, but there was a huge difference in 2 & 3... Didn't try more than that...
Accuracy, i have around 95-98% accuracy...
As ive said, if you make sure while scanning itself, that you hols your phone in all the possible positions that you normal hold your phone in and then do the scans, it increases the accuracy rate a lot... Since youve made sure to scan the "most probably used parts" of your finger...

Fingerprint scanner

I assume the normal usage, at least what Sony intended, is to first wake the phone by pressing the power button, followed by screen unlock, done by fingerprint scanner.
You can bypass the screen unlock for a period of time, configurable under security settings, by selecting various screen unlock timeouts.
Isn't anybody else bothered by this two steps unlock, isn't it possible to be done in one step only? Is Sony even considering to change or allow one step unlock?
To me this is becoming older by the minute to the point I completely disabled this feature. Not to mention, the fingerprint reader sensor needs multiple reads to get it right. (of course, I have reconfigured the sensor by inputting what I hoped a wider finger area, didn't get better)

I can do it in one go. Hold power with registered finger in the right location and phone unlocks shortly after depressing power button, i.e. fingerprints are read whether or not the power button is depressed. Your sensor requiring multiple reads is probably why this isn't working for you.
I've read that the sensor doesn't work well for many people and I've experienced how damp fingers don't really work either. My fingers are not the greasy type (too dry more like) so maybe this is a factor for some...
You're right, it works, although, not all the times unfortunately. In like 10 tries got it to unlock directly 2 times. Well, at least the functionality is there, thanks for your answer.

youre right it doesnt open in 10 times , 3 times it works, me having a slightly damp finger, it refuses to open, i just hope Sony guys have a work around for this??.. or is the finger print reader ther for namesake ??.... it doesnt work that well for me !!
I'm having the same problem. Moist fingers decrease the recognition of the finger print sensor. But I could improve the detection rate a bit. I've registered my mainly used finger twice. Once dry and once moist. Did help I think.
Mine is working suprisingly well, although i have only used my right thumb for it.
I have no trouble unlocking it with muddy wet hands on a bikeride, although i still wipe them slightly before using my phone.

No issues, make sure you scan all whole finger (circumfrence) as you go through the cycle, people scan the same angle over and over again

This is the key. Try as many different angles as you can when registering your finger.

Agree with this. Also did this when I registered my fingers. Scanner works well. One of the best out there.
I sort of like the idea of a press and scan. Would think if the scanner was active the whole time it would possibility affect battery life and keep the phone awake. Possibly a good design from Sony, especially with marshmallow coming with the doze feature.

Mine behave quite differently. I press the power button and then it just reads my fingerprint. It get it right just about every time, so it's like pressing like it is without the finger print scanner. I'm actually very impressed.

if you have free finger slot and want extra precision, you can scan the main finger you use twice , with as many angles as you can.
i'm very impressed by this sensor love it!
I have my Z5 for 5 days only. I registered 3 right hand fingers and one left, but I actually got only 50% success unlocking. I thought it's just a hardware limitation or something...
Then I read this thread and registeted my main finger twice, also applying the "cover as much around" (I'm one of those who thought I should be constant when registering my fingerprint).
Anyway, I wanted to thank you guys and to confirm - I get 100% reading success rate now, plus the power push+scanner unlocks 10 out of 10.
Amazing scanner!
PS: of course I have to try in different conditions too, fingers wet or greasy etc.

The fingerprint scanner is useless

Hey,
I have the Z5C now for over 3 months. The device is great but one thing is drivin' me nuts. The fingerprint scanner is just useless. It hardly works and when it works it's just slow.
I've tried everything scanning multiple fingerprints of the same finger, different locations and so on. But nothing helps.
Have you guys any tipson how to improve the fingerprint scanner?
I've found that I was not holding down my finger long enough. After I started holding it down a little longer, it seemed like it started working much better, nearly everytime.
I found that it sometimes doesnt work with smart lock. I'll try the fingerprint scanner many times and it will give me a failure, then I just swipe, and unlocks
Mine works just fine, as long I don't have really greasy fingers...
Working fine here as well. Sometimes it gets a bit greasy, clean it with a cloth and it works well again.
works fine for me too. Has trouble when my finger is wet, but probably any scanner would have this problem.
Working flawlessly here. It could be faster but at least it's consistent.
My only issue is also if my finger is wet. Otherwise, I have no problem with the fingerprint scanner. Works every time. Sometimes, too well. I've just picked up my phone, hit the scanner just right, and unlocked the phone without trying too.
No matter what I've tried I can't get it to consistently work. Washed the phone with soap. Cleaned the scanner with alcohol. It'll work for a little. Bit but then stop working. I must have more oily hands than most. But the scanner on the nexus 6p never failed me.
Wet or greasy fingers won't work... If the finger you programed into the phone isn't the same or similar state then it won't work..
I might program a wet or greasy finger as well So I get the same response when unlocking.. Watch this space.
Probably haven't helped washing the phone with soap XD... I'm getting vivid images of a glass of JD with a phone in it now....

Yeah that is exactly my problem. If my finger is slightly greasy it won't work. It's so annoying.
Pocketnow had the same problem with their Z5 aswell. My experience is preety much the same.

To anybody having problems with the scanner: is there a possibility that you have registered your fingerprints while your fingers were wet or greasy? (and now clean fingers are not properly recognized)
On another note, I noticed that the scanner only recognizes a certain portion of the finger and only in the correct orientation (even if I properly moved my finger during registration).
Mine is often too fast, unlocking the phone when I only wanted to check the time.
If my fingers are sweaty, it'll have issues, but that's to be expected.

That's exactly the issue. Some people just naturally have more oily hands, like myself. The fingerprint scanner should be good enough to account for that. This was never an issue when I used the iPhone 6s or when I used the Nexus 6P. I've only experienced a fingerprint scanner as incapable on the Z5C.
instead on focusing only on adding a fingerprint you should also note which type of grip you have when registering. Since the orientation of the fingerprint is recorded as well it seems. And finally add the same finger multiple times with a different grip and if you unlock using the same grip/finger combo as registered, i have had no issues.

Tried that as well. Most of the time I get "Finger moved too fast" or something. Or it's "Not recognized".

This is a great point; finger orientation matters, in my experience. I used to register my finger lined up with the sensor, but I got many unlock failures this way. Then I noticed that I would usually grab and turn on the phone with my finger at an angle. I retrained the sensor, moving my finger to the various orientations that I might use. This improved recognition greatly.
Remember also to vary your finger position slightly when you train, just like the phone asks you to do. There is little point of training it with the same 10 scans of your finger. The more views it has, the easier it can interpolate for recognition. (On the flip side, presenting it with 10 completely different scans would not work well either.)

Na, that doesn't work for me. Even if I try to register a new finger it often vibrates that it has registered my finger but the progress circle is not moving. So it's not reading it properly right at the beginning...
I've had no probems with the scanner- occasionally it takes more than one try but that's usually because of my finger/thumb position.
As above though I did make sure when I registered each figit that I moved it around to give the print in lots of different positions.
Fingerprint scanner works flawlessly for me I'm very impressed with it
Hi all,
For me it works well, i have some problems when my fingers are wet but it unlock the device faster than place a patern
In the other hand i try to use it with Paypal app but all the time it tells that fingerprint is not available, did you have the same problem with paypal app?
My bank app uses the fingerprint too and works like expected

Fingerprint scanner reliability

Hello! I have seen the ugly head come around that the scanner has not been super reliable. Now, I have the Tmo version and am on 9.0.0. Is that the reason currently? If not, It seems like the screen protector has smudges on it thus causing miss reads. If I try to wipe it off, it helps. Maybe we should be looking at a different screen protector? Thoughts?
Cheers
Joshua
I haven't had a fail to read yet... A few times it was slightly slower but still went through. Maybe try resetting up your finger. I know if my hands have been wet for a while my old phones wouldn't read.

I have reset it up a few times now. Tried even setting it up twice and that still didn't help much (to do this, I just kept pressing it again and again and it finally logged a second finger).

The more i use the FP reader, the better it seems to be getting. One thing is that it requires more pressure than my old Moto Z Play, but that's been an easy adjustment. Give it a little more time and continue to use all the fingers that you have stored. I mainly use my right thumb, and it works all the time now. My left thumb is hit and miss, so I'm using it more.
Unlocked the display 30+ times on 9.0.4 and it didn't reject my finger once. Speed varied each time if you place your finger/thumb perfectly aligned will unlock almost instantly
Was an OTA for screen unlock improvements already not sure what it changed though

I have the TMo version and I don't really get failures for my main/first finger entered. It seems that the more I use a particular finger, the better it unlocks. So the first finger is fine. The second was ok and is getting better. Third and fourth are still a mixed bag but getting better. My suggestion is to make sure you are enrolling them as you would be using them. So if you're going to be using a particular finger while cradling the phone a certain way, enroll it that way. If you will use that finger while the phone is sitting on your desk, enroll it that way. That seems to be the main thing I've found.
It seems the scanner isn't reliable on mine. It is really snappy after the initial setup. Then it loses accuracy within minutes after the setup. It doesn't recognize any of the finger 90% of the the time. I ended up either enter in the pin or use face detection. I don't understand the problem. my oneplus 6t is a tmobile.
I've got a McLaren on OS 9.0.9, and can definitely vouch for unlock instability w/ the left thumb.
Still have the screen protector on from factory shipment, so don't know if removing it would help, but not enough of a nuisance for me to want to remove it...yet.
I'm having an even worse issue.. A friend is able to unlock my phone without adding his fingerprint to my phone.. OP isn't taking this issue serious when I report this to them and they keep telling me to add my fingerprints again..
I have a OP 6T McLaren Edition, and just registered my right thumb. When I can't use my thumb, I use face recognition.
So far it's been reliable after a few weeks of use, but I've noticed you need to learn the right spot and the way you put the finger also influences its accuracy.
Something I've noticed...
I didn't use the "face unlock" when I first got the phone. Just used the fingerprint...VERY quick. Then, I turned on the face unlock just to see how well it worked, and was surprised how well it DID work (just not with sunglasses...duh). I've noticed, that if I wake up the phone,
with it anywhere near my face and try to unlock it with the fingerprint sensor (habit), the phone will stutter while I assume it is trying figure out WHICH way to unlock it.
Any chance that is the issue with yours?
If I have the phone laying on a table, no where near my face, and hit the power button, the fingerprint sensor is VERY responsive, but, if my face is anywhere near the phone, it struggles if I hit the fingerprint sensor.
Just throwing it out there...
Hmm.. I did notice that. I'll try disabling face unlock on my phone and observe it.
