Galaxy S6 Drop Test - Galaxy S6 General

Hey everyone... I went ahead and made a drop test video for anyone wondering how durable the Galaxy S6 is.
Hope it helps.

Awesome. Nice to see you around here Tim. Will be watching ?

Thanks for the drop test on the S6.
That video with the girl smashing the Edge is definitely fake after seeing more tests.

Yea it must be. But saw another with the S6 Edge. It took quite alot of beating before cracking. I guess it is as always. Pure luck.

Yeah that brutal drop test video is definitely fake

I think it depends on luck too, i found another drop test, and no damage to front screen or back with pocket height drop and face height drop, just the scuffs on metal and camera rim

brings back the memories of broken iphones.
would a slim case and a tempered glass protector be enough?

thats my exact question.
Can you answer this bro

Of course it is going to be enough. What you need is a material which will absorb the instant shock from hitting the ground. Basic TPU protection should be more than enough.

It looks like the woman from the first one is back with another video. This time she's cracking nuts oO

Has Anyone Done A Nexus 4 Official Bumper Case Drop Test?

I'm normally so against drop tests. They make me cringe; especially on devices as nice as the N4. However, I've been considering getting an N4 and am concerned about the glass back (and screen); I've taunted iPhone users far too much about their cracked backs to undergo the same experience. At the same time, I like to leave my devices naked, and with the N4 being such a good looking device, I would definitely like to; that back is just stunning. The bumper case would leave the back exposed, so one problem solved. However, the question is: will it protect the back and the screen from shattering if you drop it flat? I know the bumper slightly "elevates it" from touching when you place it down, but is it enough to protect it from a square drop? Anyone have any actual insight and results?
Thanks!
The bumper will not do much to protect against drops. There's a reason why otterbox and other case makers don't save money and just make bumpers.
I have dropped mine twice so far in three weeks. Completely naked on laminate floor. Not even a scratch... Tempting fate I know but this phone is not as fragile as some would have you believe.

When I think Otter box I think construction worker. I don't anticipate ramming in to things or dropping it on to anything but a floor, nor do I see it getting wet, but I'd like to be sure that if it falls off my couch on to the living room floor that it won't bust

Thaaat's what I'm looking to here. I've just been wondering if that "elevation" is enough to protect it from a square drop on a normal floor. I've been looking for actual drop test videos and only find them without a case...seems to me it defeats the purpose...don't judge the durability of a glass phone vs. the floor, judge the durability of the case that's supposed to protect it! I just want to be able to see the back and not uglify the phone but have the comfort of knowing it'll be safe from the occasional drop

The commuter line is really not THAT huge looking... the defender however is overkill for many
Does anyone want to take one for the team and perform a official bumper drop test? Lol.
Yeah commuter is a little bulky but not as extreme as defender. Defender is overkill when it comes to protection. Commuter is a good case but doesn't provide a good enough grip for me.

I suppose...but it isn't even the size it's the fact that the back can't be seen...it isn't the bulk that's the damper it's the look..people spend a long time designing the device to look great and it's all sort of 'ruined' by the case

not sure why you would need an "official" drop test with bumper. you are looking for some kind of protection while being able not to cover the back side of the phone, which i can totally understand, since i am looking for the same.
however, since the bumper is the only way of protection which does not cover the back, what else is there to discuss? get the bumper, i am going to do the same when it is available (when will that be...???).
i am pretty sure that it goes without saying that the nexus is safer in the bumper than beeing naked when you see it falling down on the floor in slow-motion.
the bumper will definitely protect the surfaces, only if you are very unlucky it should do any harm (i.e. little stone lying on the ground, device falls exactly onto it).
greetings,
hallu
I dropped my N4 at waist level about 3 times with the bumper on (hardwood floor). Everything is fine

I haven't got a bumper, but I have a screen protector story.
Shortly 2 hours after installing a $3 screen protector, I grabbed my garage door handle while holding the Nexus. The screen came into direct contact with steel handle bar. The protector got nicked.
Since I'll be getting a bumper, I'd need full body screen protector. Should I get the Skinomi or Zagg? I don't mind the price as long as it's under $30.

im not very impressed with my skinomi since the scratches dont go away. its been a few days and these arent fading at all.
I would research it .
Just because somebody drops their phone and it don't break doesn't mean ur phone will share the same fate. Even if u have everything on ur phone that they had.

S***!
I just accidently yanked the USB cable while the phone is charging.
It fell in super-high speed from a 2 feet desk, hit a ceramic floor with one of the corners. It's still tethered to the charger, so it doesn't bounce around.
I almost had a heart attack when I hear the big "THUD!" sound.
Luckily I still has my cheap-ass S-Line TPU case on. Not a scratch! No cracks! Nexus is still in pristine condition.

Dropped it yet?

Like a lot of people I'm suddenly debating an edge but I'm worried about losing a rim of aluminum or plastic around the screen. I don't do cases and do drop my phone on concrete around twice a year but have never broken anything, am I right in guessing that edge screens lose a lot of durability without a case?
Dropped mine twice, both times onto my Kitchen floor (stone). Not even a scratch, much to my surprise.
Haven't found a case I like yet, and I'm insured, but will eventually get a flip cover I think.
drop it in the toliet 2 times on wooden floor, looks the same as before when i buy it.
That's sweet to hear, thanks!
Dropped my on kitchen floor yesterday thankfully not a mark on it !!
I've had mine for over 2 months, and it's in mint condition. You learn early on that the thing is a bit of a tank, but still manages to be well-manufactured with a premium feel. I've had a few drops thag were hard to look at, but a spray-adhesive screen protector and a flimsy TPU case bought online have protected the phone from any cracks or scratches.
i watched a drop test on youtube of this phone a while back vs an iphone, and although ymmv compared to the video, it did seem like the S6 was pretty tough, it took dropping the phone from around 10feet high before the glass smashed on back or front! I was very impressed.
I want to also highlight how I've gone without a case for the few months I've had this phone, and there isn't one scratch to be seen! Yes it is a fingerprint magnet, but I seriously thought that the back of the phone would look awful pretty quickly, but it's just pristine!
Dropped mine again in the kitchen again no damage thankfully.

Without a good case; this thing is so painful to hands, i mean sharp rear lines. After a long surfing on the hand, it is giving cramp. [emoji51]
And sending an another post. Why?
Because I can..
Yes I dropped mine onto a beer can on the floor which still had some beer in it, this made sure the can did not move. The result of the 3ft fall? the pixels at the impact point are completely knackered, so will need to claim on the insurance when it comes to selling it for the Note 6, as I imagine the phone is probably a write off as it is the screen as well as the glass. Not sure I think much of this Gorilla Glass!
I owned the xperia z and z3 and never managed to crack these once. On the three occasions I dropped my s6e+ it resulted in damage. Why buy an expensive beautiful glass phone to put it in a plastic case?
yep yesterday camera len broken. looks like a right pain to do and looks like camera its self looks damaged too.

Anyone using the phone naked?

Hi Guys,
So i bought a Tech 21 evo frame for my edge but the phone feels so nice and looks so stunning without a case, is anyone rocking It naked?
(Meaning the phone itself lol)
I have tried, but there is nowhere to put the phone when your not using it, plus it can get pretty cold sometimes.
The lateral grip is so bad (slippery, narrow) that I think it's guaranteed you will drop the phone if used without any case.
I'm currently using it without case and will go on that way, I'll most likely just get a skin for the back to avoid scratches and get slightly better grip.

Using naked with a ScreenKnight protector on it. I have a Spigen Neo Hybrid for it but it makes it too bulky....
Kinda worried about dropping it though, especially after paying so much for it.
Going to be using an otter box symmetry once my zagg screen protector dries up.
Bought a cheap Best Buy store brand clear gel case for it, adds grip but keeps the look of the phone. No screen protector until a glass version.
Naked for me, I do what to get a screen protector for the front though. Just worried about scratches causing issue's when using the vr.
Seems a shame that a manufacturer spends so much time perfecting the design to look and feel this good when the majority of people just stick a case and screen protector on.
Obviously I know it's an expensive and great device to own and we don't wanna risk scratching or smashing it.
Just saying...
I like to live life on the "edge." No case or screen/back protector for me. Ran for 14 months with a naked Note 4 and only dropped it twice with minimal bezel damage. The trick is to have no friends and stay in your house/office all the time...

I do see one benefit of a case though...
True Story;
Woke up on day two with my new Galaxy S7 Edge and grabbed it off my nightstand in the dark bedroom to start my morning routine. I am embarrassed to admit that I sat there for the better part of 30 seconds trying to turn the screen on only to find that I was holding the phone upside down and it was illuminating my palm. The phone is curved nearly the same on the front and back and the glass on both sides really confuses the senses. I doubt I will do it again but I laughed so hard at myself.
It is a beautiful and well curved phone that shouldn't be hidden. For the same price as an Otterbox Defender you can get a year of SquareTrade Insurance and let them handle the worrying. Thankfully I don't see myself filing a claim for a toilet drop like with my Note 3 since this one's water proof; just as long as I fish it out before 30 minutes.
Yes, but I will purchase insurance.

I take that with a grain of salt. I've seen so many drop test videos of so many devices. It all depends on where it lands. One g5 may have lasted 3 or 4 drops whereas other g5 will crack on the first one. If any phone lands on the glass first it will break. Of it landed on the bottom it would be different.

It was because it hit the top during the fall (probably the second contact with the ground) that it broke. You can see the nick on the top that started the crack. This is not new news. Pick any popular phone and search drop tests. You will find some that ever break and some the break right away. It happens. Yes, there is a chance it will break every time but we need more drop tests videos to prove it. But phones will break when dropped... It will happen. If you don't have insurance, case or screen protector and drop it you will have some problems.
The V10 does a good job with drops and of course the new driod turbo but most other phones will break easy.
Gorilla glass may help with scratches but it is still glass, glass will break when under force. Personally why I've never been a big fan or curved glass, I feel the glass is under stress and it provides a bigger surface of bubbled glass that will probably make contact with the ground sometime during the fall. In this case it was enough to crack. The second drop shattered more since the integrity of the screen was already broken. There is a chance if the impact hit the bottom that the glass would not have broken further.
Just my 2 cents from experience and many many glass videos and drop tests
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I think the corner is the worst place to drop. All kinetic energy from the drop is focused into the tiniest area Erich the disperses through the phone whereas landing on front of back or even sides absorbs the shock over a larger surface area.
FWIW, I did drop mine yesterday (day 2) from about 5ft onto tile. Hitting the corner first. Corner is scuffed but OK besides that.
Every drop is different though. Drop tests are so so unscientific.

I completely agree. It depends about height, angle, speed, material of the floor (a carpet, cement, tile is all very different from each other).
I am going to have a case regardless, but still... The last phone I actually had that could withstand many drops was my old Blackberry 8300, 8800, 9700, etc. Those were built like bricks (tons of plastic, very little glass if any at all).
Any and all glass will crack. Maybe if the surface were completely flat and the floor was completely clean that fall wouldn't shatter the screen, but if there is a grain of sand on the floor or a spiky piece of cement or ground, all the force would be focused there!

When I first got this phone I was pumped about what was under the hood and I was glad to be free of the woes of touchwiz. But the more stuff has surfaced about the scrappy build quality around this phone makes me think a flagship is not in my hand.
Found this.
Jerry speaks about how the glass is thinner than on Samsung, etc.
I don't know if this is accurate, but it may explain why the drop broke the glass, although different drops can have different results.

I have dropped this phone more in the past three weeks then all my phones ever combined. Its almost like I am trying to break it lol. The only damage to my g5 after at least eight drops one flying down my aggregate driveway is a couple chips in the paint and a small scratch, screen is still perfect. Guess I am lucky lol
Drop tests are pointless...drop your phone without protection and something breaks...period. My coworker broke (shattered screen)his Galaxy S7 (without case) dropping it out of his pocket. It doesn't matter what phone you buy, just don't plan on dropping it and buy protection.

Mine dropped a few feet and was fine, i kind of paniced as i was waiting to switch it out (and thought that extra damage might have stopped it being exchanged?) luckily it was fine.
Lol every time i see a video of people showing drop test and overall durability for some reason my pocket hurts LIKE HELL!!! lol. Come on people, you have to actually be....( Let me try to be as respecful as possible), you have to be an idiot to buy a phone (any phone) and not buy a cover before you actually use it. Sometimes i think people like to spend thousands and thousands of dollar buying smartphone just because they dont want to buy a cheap but good cover ($20-$60). Do you expect your phone to be terminator ot something? Lol. Everything manmade can be broken. And as some previous comments said, glass is glass, and the glass used in phones under no circumstances can be bullet proof lol. (there was a video a saw about an S7 been dropped from 100 fts up by using a drone, and guess what, IT WAS ALL SHATTERED AND IT DIDNT TURN ON AT ALL, what a surprise!!! (sarcasm) ). Soooooo, i motivate you to buy a good cover since day one just like i do. I dont currently own the G5 but when college let me safe a couple of bucks i will buy the cover before the LG G5 lol. And if you are able to pay $500-$900 for a phone, then you certainly are able to buy a good cover.

I am losing the original glass protector? What should I do?

Hello, my original screen protector is coming off
What do you suggest should I do? Samsung does not change it, does it?
I read the glass screen protectors on the market are not so goods, too may problems with fingerprints and so on..
Well just buy a new one from amazon... I. Just order a 2 pack spigen pack 7.99 on amazon... This one has light scratches and the spigen on my note 9 is brilliant...
On the finger print side can't say as haven't put it but will tomorrow. People on the reviews say it works fine so...
Samsung does not replace it but they offer a similar version to the OEM that came on the phone. I remember seeing a lot of talk about them being $29.xx for a three pack. That seemed kind of high to me when for not much more you could do the Dome Glass. There have been mixed reviews of the Dome Glass. The most common complaint seems to be that it is difficult to install. It looks simple and straight forward, watching the videos on YouTube, but in the real world things are never perfect. There is one video on YouTube, 14 screen protectors for the S10+, or something like that and the vlogger puts on, tests and talks about all 14 different screen protectors. If you don't want to watch the whole video, it kind of long, he lists his recommendations in order from the best to the worst in the video notes. Over at Android Central I posted a question about this, https://forums.androidcentral.com/s...dome-glass-stock-something-else-new-post.html, and was surprised how many people are going without anything. I keep watching the front camera area for scratches and have just about convinced myself to go naked too. Mine isn't lifting up but it is pretty scratched up with a few deep enough to feel.
Just use it without the film. The sensivity in fingerprint sensor is amazing!
I am using this one from amazon and found it really good.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07RW748Q4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I saw that some protector are above the camera, others not. I read that it is not good for the lens to have a film over.. Am I right?
Screen protectors don't provide drop protection for phones with edge to edge displays and minimal bezels because the vast majority of the time a phone gets dropped on one of its sides rather than the area the screen protector is covering.
But people who walk around with their phone in their pocket or in a bag will scratch up their displays if they don't use a screen protector. The display doesn't ever have to come into contact with anything as obvious as coins or keys to get scratched--particles of sandlike grit that turn up inside a pocket will scratch a smartphone screen.
Whether or not you need a screen protector pretty much depends on how you carry your phone but people who think they are purchasing drop protection often end up disappointed.
