Hey Guys,
Sorry for that dump thread, but i need some technical opionions to the GS.
I bought that mobile because its for me ideal in size, features and so on.
My "last" mobile was an iphone 3G and i was very happy with that stuff. But now i have the GS and its amazing. So in the last days i checked the xda and MoDaCo forum and found the threads about the point that the samsung drivers are encrypted and the partions are different to other smartphones, so if samsung decide to reject an update to Android 2.2 or 3.0 we never receive that update from the community. On the HTC phones it is easier for the community to hack an version and bring them to other devices but it seems for the GS it is impossible. For me it is importend to use a mobile that i can update & use it in 2 or 3 years.
So take the samsung or send it back and wait for example a bigger htc oder a 3g droid x?

Let's just say, SGS currently offers nearly everything at the top of the market.
BUT, it would NOT be future proof. Technology advances regardless of any economical drawbacks, there WILL be better phones out there in the future.

This really is a territory where personal preference will determine which the better screen will be, the differences are that minuscule.

OS - Debatable so i wouldn't want to get into this. (but might i add this? the community behind android, let alone other OS, has an advantage of being futuristic-proof because of the regular tweets and mods)
Camera - 5mp, pretty darn low comparatively to other smartphones but it's adequate/satisfying after seeing the vids/pics
For me, I would certainly pick SGS. This is a bad place to ask for our opinon, it's a SGS dedicated section! (Trust me, you won't regret it. The screen is the dealbreaker)

And no, i don't own the phone YET.
I'll be purchasing as soon as ATT's Captivate releases.

I 100% agree it's the best right now. But Android grows fast. We'll have dual core devices THIS YEAR (granted I think they'll suck battery like a cow but we'll see how it goes)... So obviously, it won't be relevant forever.
However my main issue is like with 3.0... Will we be able to upgrade or not?
Samsung is also what's keeping me from buying a Galaxy S.
I love the freedom of the HTC (specially the Nexus One), and being locked to Samsung with their terrible support is a dreadful sight to me.
I really don't know what to do, since I believe the Galaxy S has the best hardware nowadays but its software is just... unreliable

in what way exactly are you 'locked'?
the phone is rooted, and i expect a custom rom with froyo soon...

As BasieP was saying that we'll have a custom froyo, it'll happen for 3.0 (GingerBread) too. SGS will be one of the largest community due to its alluring specs. (my prediction, finger crossed - but seriously, just look at the specs)
Well that's if Samsung would not be able to provide an official build. (With the current number of developers in the community, any kind of modding is really possible)
You shouldn't worry about the support from Samsung. If you don't have Samsung, you have us. Remember now, Android is a community based 'software' (need a better word!). Annnnd best of all, our tweaks are far superior than 'official' builds.
Don't get your hopes up yet. It's not sure wether there will be a problem with the drivers or not

Well, reading the Modaco custom rom topic (I can't post the link because I'm a new user) I'm led to believe that so far nobody can make a custom rom if Samsung doesn't release the regular rom first. So, no custom Froyo until Samsung release its own Froyo update. The same for Gingerbread.
See what the poster says:

And apparently this problem has happened with the others Samsung Android phones too.
That's what I meant with being locked with Samsung.

Do we really know the hardware specifications of Android 3.0?
I'm going to the SGS fingers crossed that it get the FroYo in 2010. HTC Desire get it for next Xmas, as read in many sites.

We know nothing "for sure". But it is very likely: The first Android Phone (G1),released 2008, runs Android 2.1 just fine, and it is getting 2.2 as well.
The question is not in hardware, but in support. Does Samsung want to support this phone in 6 month, and does the community has what it needs to take the future of the I9000 into its own hands?
As long as nobody counters the "drivers are properitary" argument from psychoace, I expect that there won't be custom roms which are not based on Samsung's own ROMs.
And as long as Samsung's PR does not make a great statement in this direction, we should expect that they won't support the galaxy S in 6 month. Because that is what they did with all their android phones so far. The samsung moment can easily handle Froyo, it was released in Fall '09, and it was announced a week ago that it won't get the update.
That said, support is not better from HTC, Motorola or Sony. At least here in Europe. The Nexus One is the exception, but that is not because of HTC.
Hi Guys. This question of on-going support is the critical one for me. I really wanted to buy the Galaxy S but I've just pulled the trigger and purchased a nexus one !!!
Like any 'bleeding' edge phone the Galaxy S currently has a number of outstanding issues but who knows when, if ever, they will be fixed. At least with the nexus one there are regular updates from google AND there are loads of roms and driver updates etc available.
For me in the end it boiled down to a choice between (a) the Galaxy with its better hardware and features (E.g. the screen, built-in memory, video playback, music player etc) but with unreliable fixes and updating and (b) the Nexus with a not so good screen and poorer selections of apps out of the box but with easier updating and reliable updating.
However, having said that, I still think the Galaxy will still be a good/better choice for many ( most?) people provided purchasers are happy with the phone as is. I regard myself - and probably many of the XDA-developer members as a minority for whom the latest OS updates are important.

A number of items to consider:
1. This phone is being released worldwide. (support is a given)
2. Samsung has released the source code and developed a site to release source code for all their future products.

3. There is already a custom rom on MoDaco.
4. Since the phone is already rooted, further support will no doubt continue.
5. The GPU on the SGS is just insane compared to what is currently available on other phones. (including the iPhone 4)

Only time will tell how much support this phone will get from the community, but considering it is already rooted and the amount of enthusiasm people have for this phone, I think the support will continue. Even with Samsung's previous history (Behold II), I'm confindent that the SGS will get continued support. I feel this is the beginning of a very important product line for them. The backlash from South Korea alone would be immense if they dropped support. Pissing off customers in your home country would not be a good idea.
I'm definitely putting all my eggs in this basket and hoping for the best.
PS: There's no such thing as a future proof phone. There will definitely be a better phone this fall. But probably none with a Super AMOLED screen.
I see we're all going crazy about the specs of the Xperia Z2, but no one here appears to be concerned about how slow sony is to roll out updates, Kitkat 4.4. was released on the 31th of October, and the Xperia Z1 , sony's current flagship still hasn't got it :/ ... 4 months after the release , they plan on delivering the update on April, 5 months, maybe 5 and a half months after 4.4 was really released and they're not making any promises of improving, what do you guys think?
That's definitely a concern of mine. Sony is worse than the major Android manufacturers (Motorola, HTC, Samsung, even LG is rolling out its Kitkat update) in terms of updates. One consolation is that Android updates aren't as big or crucial as they used to be since it is a pretty mature OS at this point, but I can't deny that I find Sony's update speed disappointing. I don't think it will stop me from getting the Z2, tho.

Wait and you'll get your KitKat...Sony is actually building their UI, it's not only cheap mask over Google framework - that's why they need time.
Wen you get KitKat you'll request another version...or you'll open thread to request root for kitkat...
Relax, you still have almost one whole year of support and everything will come and be released on time.

Do you really think that getting the update 5 months later is acceptable? It's not like we're getting a new UI with sony's implementation of kitkat, we should actually , I don't understand why reasonably demanding for things, makes us a**holes, should we just keep quiet and be content with what companies give us? How do you think HTC and Motorola updated their game ? By listening the the users complain , they want our money? They'd better work for it!

What are you really doing here - takes as is or leave it
I'm on a Nexus 5 and I love both pure Android and quicker updates. Unfortunately the lack of Hw specs (battery and microsd) will drive me to Z2 and its slowlier upgrades of sw.

We're on similar situation , I can't stand the awful battery life of the nexus 5 , I don't miss the SD card at all since I have the 32 gb version and that's enough for me, what bothers me too is that the 16:9 photos are 6 MP, I would like 12-13 MP photos, I don't need 20 MP photos but I'm not complaining either Haha

Some more thoughts on slower updates that might make your mind rest a little easier:
As someone else pointed out, if you take Samsung as an example, faster updates aren't always a good thing. Samsung devices are usually pretty well optimized for the version of Android they ship with, but when they update to a new major version of Android the performance can get substantially worse. I've noticed this with several Samsung devices. So giving a manufacturer the time to make sure everything works well on their hardware is a good thing. Keep in mind brand-new Android releases are often tailored to a subset of Android hardware in the latest Nexus devices, and hardware differences in other devices might take a while to perfect.
Also, new major versions of Android often have bad bugs. Look at Motorola who invested a lot of effort into getting 4.4 on the Moto X very soon after it was released. Unfortunately 4.4 had several major bugs including broken Exchange support! Moto X owners who upgraded were stuck with broken devices until Moto released 4.4.2 months later. So it is also good to wait for at least a couple of point releases before a manufacturer commits to a new version of Android.
Nexus devices don't have these issues because they can just keep releasing new updates quickly, but if a manufacturer's customized Android actually offers valuable improvements (which I think Sony's does) it makes sense to take a little longer.
I still wish Sony were faster, tho
I'm a bit worried. I honestly Sony would concentrate on one flagship per year, like everyone else. I'm on an XZ and am sick of trying to keep up. I'm considering my next phone now, but I can't say if the z2 is a slam dunk now. I do like the sound of the speakers though...
I've used Sony (Ericsson) phones for years. Late updates are a condition you either live with or jump ship. Sony has always been notoriously late with update releases.

Personally not worried about getting updates late but a bit worried about not getting updates at all after a while & becoming abandoned
I mean Samsung is releasing Kitkat for GS3 which is a device from may 2012, Not sure if it's the same with Sony specially with their two flagship a year strategy
I'm not. If there is not a disturbing bug in Z2, I still use it. If the new feature that roll out from Sony and Google with an update is not necessary and attracting to me,I don't change my phone to other brand.
Who cares what OS version you got? Unless there is a bug or something, I don't care if I ever get any updates. I would even prefer the older version now since they messed up the notification screen.
To be honest, Jellybean is stable enough so that we don't necesarily "need" further updates. I'm "suck" on 4.1.2 on my optimus g and don't really mind at all(And yes, LG is worse at abandoning their flagships). Got kit kat on my nexus 7 and don't really see much difference. I miss the great sony UI though. Still torn between this phone and the z1.
I buy phone - start to see if everything works - root - flash custom rom. Never worries about updates.

A pretty major update in 4.4 for devices with on-screen buttons, like the Xperia series, is "immersive mode" (http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...go-truly-full-screen-hide-the-navigation-bar/). There are other nice updates, and maybe that one doesn't interest you, but to me it's a big deal. You never know when Google is going to throw a great new feature like that in.

Hey guys are we really rushing lollipop on T-mobile. With all these US carriers talking about bugs in the latest version why would we even want it right now. 5.0 No 5.1 YES. I have a great running 5.0 rom running now but yes the battery isn't that great, yes it's gets hot, yes it takes longer to boot, yes my LTE is spotty at times, yes my WiFi isn't as strong at kit Kat. Am I alone on this one? Read the below article. The U.S. carriers isn't the only ones with the problem.

for me, I'm in no rush. unless lollipop fixes this extremely laggy phone I can care less. this phone, as powerful as the specs say it is, is a slow, laggy, bad camera POS. I'm eligible for jump on 9/25 and it cannot come soon enough. I had a Moto X before this, and I was happy with it. the Note 4 is full of disappointment. I don't see how all of the early reviews were so positive for it, the moto x had embarrassing specs but performed perfect, the camera wasn't good but I preferred it over this one, at least it opened and focused quickly.
I still wouldnt call it a "rush" though when its the slowest to market.
Most of these articles make me like tmo even more. I can wait for greatness. I think sprint use to watch xda closely because some how after every update leak that had problems and xda devs fixed them sprint would release a newer update with those problems gone lol gotta love xda

Flash Dynamic Pop or Dynamic Kat and it'll change your mind about the phone.
I have been using the unmodified port of SM-N910W8 Lollipop firmware (http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...t-unmodified-port-sm-n910w8-lollipop-t3072920) for a while now and it has made my phone better. That said i rather wait for the tmo version without bugs instead of right now and render my phone unusable. Also there are many 5.0 roms already out which are infinite better than anything tmo can ever gives us .

Bad camera??? Laggy??? I dunno what phone you're using, but my Note 4 has an AWESOME camera and is faster/smoother than anything I've ever used before. Are you you running straight stock with no root, mods, etc?
You are not alone my friend. As much as I love them. .I finally flashed rapture again last night. Developers are limited as far as how great they can make touch wiz....Samsung as limited because Google dropped a messed up os to begin with its a shame really

I agree. Samsung should not push lollipop to anyphones unless google irons out all the bugs. Right now 5.0.1 or 5.0.2 is out for most. But why not wait for stable OS from google as nexus users will be the testers for us.
Also samsung needs to do lot of testing on stable OS from google because of TW skin

To be fair it's not like Apple and Microsoft put out perfect OS's right out of the box. Granted Apple is a different model but software is software, at some point the decision has to be made to release, bugs and all.
I have become so used to cm12 and now 12.1 and very happy that honestly dont see myself bothering with the official when ever its released

I spoke with my friend who works for TMO he told me that they had been testing show failed it has reported back to Samsung takes little longer. He thinks it will release out in late summer. I am disappointed. I wish I had kept note 3 (N900T)

Is Bluetooth working on it? 12.1 I mean also how's the battery. .last I tried it sucked bad
I agree with a lot of what was said here, but if you're on XDA, why not root and flash a custom ROM if you're unhappy with your phone? I've tried at least 4 ROMs for the Note 4 (and many more with the Note 3) and have found at least a couple are almost perfect and most have been far superior to stock in every way. And I'm just talking about normal performance; with root you also have the ability to add and subtract apps and features and theme your device and truly make it yours. With a custom ROM and all the options and performance root brings, we really won't need to update for years from the current OS. But if Samsung would lighten up TouchWiz, the updates would come faster.

Is it because when we get it our battery problems will be solved and battery life will beat note 5... Strange that full price unlocked phones still no updates but usa carriers have. Disgraceful really... One thing I really like about the iPhone upgrades are fast and for every model with support for older models at least 2 or three years

But I don't think Apple is the best example when it comes to updates. They usually release updates that have performances or battery life problem on older iphone's models and only newer models (or the one from the year before) can access to all fonctionalities.

That can't be true. The 5.1.1 update is only available in the US right now which is the only country (apart from Korea) that will actually get the Note 5.
Yes us cariers... But what about the rest of the world.... Not to mention people who paid full price.

Is it not normally the case that the clever folk on the XDA forums can make it so that the US firmware for 5.1.1 can work on the international variant 910F?

Shouldn't be too much work, but I doubt it would be worth it considering the official update could come any day now. Also Sprint and T-Mobile released the updates, not Samsung, so Samsung could still be holding back the firmware for international Note 4 customers. There's just nothing we can do right now, other than to wait for the update to drop. I'm going to guess we'll see it the same time the Note 5/S6/S6 Edge/S6 Edge Plus (how many top tier phones does one company really need?) gets updates to Android Marshmellow (which is running awesome btw on my Nexus 5).

Sammy have screwed things up with lollipop on the sd variants. To get it to boot you need the modem files from the same base. This means to get 5.1.1 tmob booted we'd need the tmob modem. Trust me I've tried every thing I can think of to get either the tmob or sprint releases to boot but no luck

I should add note5 firmware doesnt have stagefright fix too. They will want to add that fix in note 4 firmware aswell.
Guys will Touchwuiz Themes will be added in 5.1.1 update ?

I don't think Samsung is holding back updates because of their selling policy. The usual customer doesn't know abou it. We on xda are keeping an eye on the updates, but we are probably just 1% and that isn't significant.

That is a valid argument, but most regular people at the store normally go for the phone with the newer android version, so even for regular Joes it matters.

I don't know...I'm just saying that my family is just buying the newer phones and they don't know what android version they are getting. I recently got my brothers note3 to use and he didn't update at all since he buyed it. And I think he's an avarage user.
The android versions are confusing for the avarage user, not like iOS. Google and Samsung and other manufacturers don't make such big deals of the updates like Apple does.
We've been waiting far too long for 5.1.1, I must say. Samsung truly have taken their time.
I've had the S2, S3 and S4, and never waited this long for updates.
I am loving my Note 4 more than any other Samsung...heck any phone in general I've owned, that is including more than my 1st smartphone, the Nokia N80, which I absolutely adored. Yet I can't help but feel Samsung is letting down what has to be their greatest smartphone in recent times with slow updates, its such a shame really.

Never waited this long for updates? Seriously, seems like you never owned a Galaxy Note N7000. More than 8 months waiting for the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 update and one year for Carrier Updates. The best treated Note was the Galaxy Note 2, which recived JB 4.2.2, 4.3, 4.4 Kitkat and even Lollipop was planned for it. But yes, now that the Note 5 is released, we need to wait a couple of months to see a big update for our Note 4. I'm pretty sure that Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be the last one, sadly, knowing Samsung and their update policy.
It is very simple. They delay 5.1.1 because of Note 5. They want customer have more reasons to upgrade, to buy their new phone. And if they do like 5.0.1, just upgrade OS core, no more features like on S6, Note 4 user will be disappointed with them. Many user want removable battery, better battery life option, sd card support so they will not upgrade soon!

You are right, this is the truth.
I will keep my Note 4 (KitKat 4.4.4), I downgrade from 5.0.1 because of bugs and I will not update my Note 4 to any new firmware unless it will be bug free as much as the 4.4.4 firmware.
that will lead me to change my mind regarding what is next after Note 4 (My next smartphone) ?!!!
I will think twice before buying something from Samsung, specially after using glass for building their smartphones.

Each Galaxy Flagship has 2 years major support from Samsung, for Note 4 it's already passed 2 years.
so as per Samsung and most of other company logics and standards, if you want the latest updates you need to get a new phone, even if your old phone is capable and better than most of the new phones.
While the Note 4 could easily run Nougat if Samsung decided to release it. I seriously doubt that we will see Nougat for the Note 4. Samsung hasn't even address the swappable battery charging problem with any of their OS updates, yet.
This is what I absolutely hate about this business. They make devices obsolete by not updating them anymore. Politics really has to do something about this.

Why should they? Even if Note4 is still a good phone, it is pretty old model, no point in upgrading it. The competition is huge, Samsung has to concentrate on new models. They want people to buy new phones, not upgrading old ones, and even if for some of us seems totally pointless to buy a new handset because of it´s new OS, some others do it.
