new update incoming soon - Fire TV General

Fire TV's should have new update soon. Adds usb storage support,apps/games can be downloaded to USB storage THIS IS HUGE!
Since we can sort of have kodi icon on recents tab.. I am thinking of breaking root and get this update. The only thing I will miss is xposed rbox tools for custom launcher but if I get all these extra features and stability withrout root.. I think it might be worth it.
What's your opninion on this people?

It certainly is tempting, but i think i can be patient and wait a few to see if a flashable pre-rooted build might get released.

I messed up one of my fire tvs lol. I will have to make some important decision as it's hard to get rootable tv's from staples where I used to get many.

What do you think is the downside of keeping root? Youre right--this is huge. Usb storage is probably the most cited benefit of root by users, but its not the only one.
For me, this news is a good reason to buy another aftv but i wouldnt even think of breaking root...are you contemplating this because youre concerned with something going wrong?

Bluetooth Headset support as well is huge.
native usb move apps to usb storage is also huge
and of course having use of USB storage drives flash drives etc..
Kodi icon can be on Recents screen is good enough. I don't see much reason to keep root anymore hmmm :cyclops:

I get your excitement but i already have kodi under recents and yesterday installed akg launcher (no root needed) which puts all my apps in the app section and under recent.
I could see not going through the increasingly tedious process of rooting because of this news, but not losing root intentionally.
Plus, rbox just fully unlocked bootloader, Techvendetta is working on CM and there might be more stuff on the horizon, none of which will be possible without root. On top of that we could see this update in the form of a prerooted firmware.
Its really not my intention to debate, people can do whatever they want but you didnt really answer my question--whats the downside of keeping it rooted?

I'd wait to see if @rbox or @realbbb can provide a custom ROM for this new update. Does not make much sense to kill root on the Fire TV. Then again, I use the SPMC launcher with the Black Glass Nova skin that affords easy access to the Amazon launcher on its home screen. I'd rather it be this way than having to look at that hideous Amazon UI whenever I fire up the Fire TV.

I know a place where you can still get the rooted new one. But the person has one. I can point you there if you want. You can then sell yours on ebay and loose about 20 bucks. I did that for myself.

It's fine but thanks for the help lol this thread was supposed to get opinions on the new update lmfao :good::highfive:

Early on I made the decision not to root my AFTV, I'd rather have bug fixes and other improvements, but USB storage has been the one big issue I have. I've just been patiently waiting for Amazon to release an update for USB storage OR a Google Android TV box to come out that meets my requirements. The default UI could be better, having side-loaded apps in the app section would be nice, but ultimately now that we are getting USB storage I have no complaints about my AFTV and will likely stick with AFTV for now and when future versions are released. Such a dumb little thing that should have been included from the start, now I can have all my kids' games installed at once instead of bouncing them back and forth to the cloud. For that matter, not only can I put The Bard's Tale back on I can actually let it install the high-res gfx version and see if it looks any better.
I guess you could say that's my long-winded "there are still reasons to root your AFTV, but not nearly as compelling and probably not worth the effort for most people" answer.

Intentionally lose root after all the hard work? smh.......just wait for a pre-rooted custom rom.....remember once you lose root Amazon has full control on the box, and one of my greatest fears is if they choose to block Kodi.....and "I'm NOT SURE" but isn't there some mechanism in these updates that detect if you have root and bricks the fire tv? My opinion is just wait for a pre-rooted rom

If the new update gives you the ability to use USB storage and play games of the storage, wouldn't the same apply for Kodi? Would it not be possible to put Kodi and run it of the storage\USB device?

Hi all. I have the FireTV stick. I bought it primarily for Amazon Prime, which works great. I'm also using it for Netflix, Kodi, and several others. Everything works great. I use Kodi to play movies stored on my PC. Kodi runs perfectly, but I'm very low on space on my PC.
I'm considering buying the FireTV set top box now that it will be able to use it's USB port for expanded storage. But I'm not 100% sure about whether it still needs to be rooted.
Will I be able to connect an external hard drive for movie playback with Kodi without rooting?
Thanks.

Correct, this latest update (supposedly) allows the use of USB storage without rooting the device.

unless clockworkmod makes one the twrp team told me they cannot as no one owns it yet.
I wonder if it is closer to a Galaxy Note 2 (t0 family) or a Note 10.1 (n80xx family).
CPU/Specs are similar to both devices.
And the framaroot did work.

FM radio tuner?
This is definitely great news.
Crazy, but I'm planning to pick up one of these for use as my new in-car entertainment/stereo/nav/phone system using optical digital output from the Note 8.0 via microUSB->mhl HDMI adapter->HDMI-to-Toslink Optical Digital output converter fed into my Rockford Fosgate 3Sixty.3 car audio DSP, then to amplifiers and speakers. I'm currently using my Note II/N7100 for this with awesome results, but would like a bigger screen.
I didn't see it come up in any of the specs I found online...do you gents know if the International model of the Note 8.0 (with 3G & phone dialer) will have a hardware FM Radio Tuner like the i9100, N7000, & N7100?

Spec wise its the same as the note 2. Just a higher resolution.
Does unroot work as well?
Is it possible to update via OTA afterwards?
What about the flash counter? Is it being incremented by rooting the Note 8.0?
Thanks for the info!

Nothing is being flashed here, so no counter is changed. It's simply a software only exploit that circumvents and injects the SU parts to give us admin rights.
I can't comment for sure on the updates, I think you can just remove the SU app and update then run the exploit again, that said, there's nothing saying they patch the hole that allows us to root here and you won't be able to re-root with this method after updates.

Also, using OTA Rootkeeper might work to hide root while installing an OTA. But I don't think we will know for sure, until an OTA is rolled out, and we try it. Every device and every OTA is different.
Any particular reason why XDA still does not have a forum for this device? The release of the Note 8 in general seemed to be very much on the quiet side. Hopefully the Note 8 sells decently, and gets some dev support. Its a great device. Nice to see a 7-8" Android tablet that is not relegated to the bargain basement; but rather at a higher price point with a full feature set.
If you want a forum created for the Note 8, make it known by posting here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660354
I was asking because usually on Samsung devices it is not possible to run an OTA update while it is rooted (you normally get a message that your device has been modified when you search for updates). But unrooting the device (with Framaroots unroot feature) should make it able to run OTA updates again. There are some reports though, that on some devices OTA update isn't possible even after unroot with Framaroot.
Could anyone of you please try to unroot the device and start an OTA update? When you get the message "no update found" (since there are no updates yet), everything is fine...
Thanks!

Interesting idea. I've seen it done a few times with Nexus 7's, which you might want to consider for half the price. To answer your question- I haven't read anything about an FM tuner and have no reason to think it comes with one. I've found that most phone/tablet devices with one don't work extremely well anyway.
It's a much cheaper solution than the 7" Alpine unit I was looking to put in my car ($1200). I just don't want to butcher my car to get it in. You seem to be much more capable with the install. Good luck with it.
I'm just hoping for a mod that allows any app to be used in the multi-window "tab". I'm tempted to try the mod for the Note 2, but haven't done enough research yet to see if that would be worth the risk or not...

[Q] Buy Nexus 10?

I'm interested in purchasing the Nexus 10 32GB tablet for £389 on Google Play Store but have few questions I want to ask before buying as I never owned a tablet before,
1. I heard the Nexus 10 has a locked bootloader, is it easy to unlock it to root and install custom ROM?
2. Is it easy to root the tablet?
3. I want to stay as stock as possible, is there any custom ROM out there that is based on the original 4.4.2 firmware with few performance tweaks and deodexed apps?
4. Does this tablet have alot of wakelocks which stops it from deep sleep which will drain the battery?
5. Any problems with this tablet I should know?

I'm very surprised none has answer this... Here's my answer to the best of my knowledge:
1.- yes it comes with a lock bootloader , it's unlocks super easy I used Wug's root tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015467
2.- Wug's root toolkit does it for you too!
3.- Sure Here's one example of a Odex or deodex Rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2529492
4.- Wakelocks not more than the next tablet or cellphone all have a solution if any exist.. so many tutorials all over XDA how to handle wakelock.
5.- ONLY real problem I see with these tablet is the lack of a SD card slot.. other than that I love the screen, it handles very well just about any game.

I've wakelocks on my Galaxy S4 which I use Greenify to hibernate the apps but it uses XPosed which I've a game which doesn't run if it detects XPosed is installed due to cheating or something like that, but probably will use Titanium Backup to freeze Google Play Store and Service if not needed at that time

Just some heads up this tablet is pretty good with only one account but when you add multiple users it starts to slow down. I have 3 on mine and I have to reboot whenever switching from one to another now or it'll lag because of ram used by other account. If you only use one it'll be great though. It's still great for me either way though I wouldn't mind an upgrade

BTW Greenify doesn't require Xposed Framework, unless u want to activate a few extra options or if u have the donate version, I have it on my phone and I don't have Xposed.

After Rooting : what's your experience with the tablet so far

Now after many of you guys who could have the tablet already were able to root and remove your bloat , so after rooting and being able to customize your tablet and DPI etc. how is it with the tablet going for you ? Would appreciate you sharing your experience so far
p.s ... this baby will cost a solid 1000$ in my country for LTE model .
It's definitely more responsive after freezing a bunch of unnecessary (for me anyway) applications.
For me my primary reason for purchasing was for s-pen in a large form factor. Based on that I expected to just de-bloat and use stock s-pen applications. I have no interest in any other Android tablet at this time.
Question is sort of odd though; I wouldn't expect a lot of people to have gone through the hard decision of rooting such an expensive device and then say they felt it wasn't worth it.

well its not that odd bc its not just about the money etc its about the whole experience etc and what could you get out of the tablet with the more real estate and i have seen some people regretting buying it etc. am a junior architect and i was waiting for something that big to use it with the s-pen too .. in my place you wouldn't be able to resell the tablet if you didn't like it or didn't get what you expect from it etc even i watched many reviews about it and sounds pretty interesting the limitations around me makes me have some concerns thats it
Right, my point is the "is it worth it" evaluation for a person who has rooted their device will have already occurred before rooting so of course you'll get more responses in the affirmative. I suppose it's not impossible that some will chime in to say that even after rooting it's unacceptable. ...perhaps odd is the wrong thing to say...just don't expect a majority of people who have rooted to tell you that they wish they hadn't.

It's sometimes good to freeze (at least as a test-bed) because some apps no matter how innocuous they may seem could be an integrated part of the system. Removing them might break functionality within other apps or even the system itself. For example, on some systems if you remove the pre-installed file manager because you prefer another (Solid Explorer RULES!), it might break the Gallery app which could interfere with setting wallpapers even from other apps. That example - from my phone.
I want root to address the following things...
1. Remove multiwindow application restrictions
2. Use LMT or similar launcher for home, back, menu, etc.
3. Change the DPI (smaller icons, more real estate).
4. Backup/restore with Titanium Backup
5. freeze/remove system apps/bloat.
6. Install AOSP browser w/Flash
Rooting I noticed nothing different. I installed xposed and wanam to get the things I like. The main thing that changed was I lost the symbols on my keyboard. I can still get them by hitting the sym key, but can't long press the letter keys to get the symbol. It doesn't matter what language it's set to, they are not there.
Also, my video player developed an issue when it set to fullscreen. Lines through it and very choppy.
So I have un installed wanam and exposed, and video is normal, but still no symbols. Had them out of the box.
Thinking about Un rooting to see if it fixes the issue on the keyboard.

Update: I reinstalled xposed before I Un rooted, which I will not be doing. Installed the alternate keyboard symbols module, and they are back. I'll try wanam again, but leave the current module running.
Thanks for all the suggestions! Back to the rooted fun.

Got flash working using a modded flash.apk and Dolphin browser with jetpack. Works great!

For me, personally, no device is "worth it" without root access. So, I guess you can put me down for a "worth it." An unrooted device just... feels... it just plain feels wrong, man. *shivers*

Upgraded to 2.0, Android 5.1 problems

I find that the device has lost much tablet functionality. The screen does not auto rotate and stays in landscape, there is no owner information tab to display on lock screen, Amazon apps and instant video will not sync. The device will not cast a screen anymore to a roku3. In general the 5.02 Android version 1.5 was a much better tablet user experience at least for me. I almost wish for a way to downgrade back 'til this is sorted! I had hoped Jide would not grow so fast that they dropped their focus of great software on adequate hardware. They now seem to have lost their way. I had supported as a kickstarter for ultra and mini with the thinking that they can help the developing world with that proposition......now chasing Intel x86 at the failing of the kick starter supported user experience. Quite a few titles from the Google play store do not run any longer on Remix OS 2.0. At least the GPS, camera, keyboard, Bluetooth, still seem to work. I had hoped this hardware and Jide would end the constant "testing" concept as it seems like working on custom ROMs again! My Pipo M6 pro is still pretty darn useful on custom ROMs! I hope Jide regains their focus! Great UI, good enough hardware!

Can't install google calendar , amazon instant video, and their app store, won't sync. The screen rotation seems to be a result of the launcher file manager experimental feature.....it seems to disable rotation for some reason.

do you have remix 2.0 on your Remix Ultra Tablet? How is the Ultra Tablet Working on 2.0, are any apps problematic , features not working? I am using a Remix Ultra Tablet on 2.0 Remix pre release version. I see a few bugs since updating from 1.5
Am I in the wrong forum?

For me, on my laptop, I don't see bug. I have remis os 2.0 on USB, and I boot from this USB. I play swordigo and other game, my laptop is digital. It's very big advantage on remix os. I don't see any problem. it lacks the root and the battery indicator.

I think the Jide folks just stayed in vegas and never went home. I ordered a Ultra Tablet a week ago and haven't heard anything. I noticed they did increase the price $50 since I've ordered it.

Glad I found this Forum on XDA, because the JIDE forum is a hot mess and pretty much useless. The old forum was much better over there.
Anyway, I digress; I haven't "updated" to the 2.0 yet on my ultra-tablet because right now, I have ROOT on my device and I'm pretty sure there is no way to ROOT the new 2.0 OS yet. Am I correct in assuming so?

Maybe a general Jide ***** forum thread should be developed?
I started this thread, because like you I lurked for awhile over there and it is just kumbaya crapola. I haven't rooted the ultra tablet because it is just o.k. hardware platform. More interested in their more with less proposition if attainable. The mini makes a great developing world pc to get past a phone...
I think it smart to be working with XDA and X86 as the more crappy old PC's that can be !made useful the better. It's amazing the folks wanting to make these their entire command center for a home theater. Maybe they should write code and get a PI of whatever flavor they want!
Anyway, I was hoping to hear from other Remixers who've put 2.0 on thier Ultra, and what issues they have had. I do not see Jide responding to any issues anywhere....just kumbaya.
I think they were hoping to be bought up before they actually need to run a business! Perhaps just another piece of Android technology from the CH. Ina corp that is build it and move on.
I thought their concept of more with less was good for the developing world as opposed to less with more ala Apple and MS. Frankly I've been pretty happy with Nexus devices and cheap hardware on custom roms.(also a more with less proposition) My Pipo M6 pro on custom roms with a Logitech keyboard does everything this can all be it slower.
We'll see if Jide delivers, or fades....I am sure they are in over the heads, the fact that people want to root or custom to! Tells you their software solution may not be needed. Their hardware does not warrant development more than Android sticks do.
They claim to be making themselves a software outfit, but the Nexus 9, Cube and other devices have not seen any love lately.
Time will tell. Back to 2.0 update issues for the remix ultra...

I'm running the new 2.0 update and have root. You just need to boot into the CWM recovery (or flash it) that was posted in the old Jide forums, then flash the latest SuperSU zip from Chainfire. I haven't tested swapping out the stock launcher yet, as I'm really digging the new features, like desktop mode. AdAway worked perfectly, so I can confirm that root is working for at least some aspects.

Did Google calendar install and is usable? Mine can't write to drive, installed but says calendar storage is not turned on in system? Also their stupid feedback link on the shut down screen does not work since no feed back app in drawer. Did your upgrade install one that works? For whatever reason Amazon app store won't sync apps....do you use any Amazon stuff? Is it good? Trying to decide if I should blow it away and re upgrade if mine did not get all it should...seems to be at least stable and most of the hardware does seem to function correctly outside of my display seems to ghost quite terrible after the upgrade! Also Google photos seems unable to see device folders and g+ loads an app that still puts a photos app into your device....real odd!

Google Calendar fails to load on mine for the same reason. My install didn't include a feedback agent (and I think that's common across everyone's builds). I haven't tried the Amazon apps yet, so I can't comment on their usability. I will say that my display was ghosting hardcore even before the upgrade, so the 2.0 upgrade didn't affect that one way or the other. I just tried the Google Photos app and it sees my wallpaper folders in the /SDCARD partition OK, so I'm not sure what's happening on your device for it not to see them.

I can't believe the old CWM v6.0.5.1 still works on the new update and more importantly, no one has figured out how to get TWRP or a "newer" version of CWM working? I guess, if it ain't broke, don't fix it?
Thanks for the information. Will upgrading to "2.0" wipe the userdata? I don't care about re-installing apps, etc... just worried about all my media content on the device currently.
I used Kingroot as on device root. Is working so far, but can't use SuperSU. Need to stick with kingroot...

Hey guys, so the question is simple. Should I or should I not? At least not for a month or two.
I've had this habit of tripping knox after 1-2 months of use ever since the Galaxy S5. But now I've been missing all my purchased root apps and especially the v4a. However, what I'm worried about are those few issues poppin out after some time like what happened with the S7e. So I'm torn between rooting or not.
Any suggestions? Thanks guys.
Edit: So here are the few things you guys have shared (so far):
* Rooting doesn't void warranty: https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/...iphone-rooting-android-does-not-void-warranty
Few Alternatives for staying unrooted:
* TitaniumBackup Alt: Helium
* Adaway alt: Adhell. Also, samsung's own browser now supports extensions and you can download an adblock for it.
* v4a alt: none atm
* xposed alt: none atm
* expanded reboot menu: none
* doubletap statusbar to lock: none
Thanks:

* @LudoGris
* everybody else

Go for it! I don't remember the last time I didn't root a device within the first week of owning it

I didn't have Samsung since S6 which was disaster, then I had two iphones: 6s and recently 7 respectively. Now I moved back to Samsung, as I bought S8. Personally, I find rooting useless at least for now. There aren't any major/valuable tweaks available around. Unless you really want that V4A (which is overrated in my opinion), then don't root it. I rooted my S6 after about 3 months. What I would really like to see is a stereo mod that would enable front speaker to play music.

This is a great article, I also got on different conversation before regarding this. Some are claiming that they are still able to claim their warranty after tripping knox (like the artile also said) just as long as the issue is not related to it but some says differently so I'm not confident enough with the claims. Let me try to ask the CS here in my country.

Root Explorer - The My Files App isn't that bad. Only thing you really miss is the ability to edit root folders, which what do you need that for?
Adblock - AdHell on Samsung Galaxy Store. Uses Knox to block all ads on your phone. No need for rooting for this anymore.
V4A - can't help you here
Titanium Backup - Samsung and Google do a pretty good job of backing up all my apps. Only thing I really lose is the data from the apps.
All in all I don't root anymore due to the best abilities of the phones coming with everything I have wanted. Sure, I could customize a slight bit more with a rooted phone, but the downsides of rooting - being a flashaholic, worrying about tripping hardware mines, bad ROMs, bootloop, etc. - are enough to make me stay away now. I get everything I want from the Samsung phone the way it is now.
I can't believe I just wrote that! I have been rooting for years now. What is wrong with me!!!!

True. Did you take advantage of the Disconnect offer when it was free? It works great on the S8. Blocks all ads for me.
Nevermind, apparently the one we can download from galaxy apps is outdated, just updated adhell from playstore and now I can activate it. Haven't tested it yet tho.

This posts was what i've been looking for...I haven't pulled the trigger on the S8 because i'm still debating to get snapdragon or go international with exynos. My main concerns for root were adblock, titanium backup, and the lack of ability to do a nandroid backup. I've been searching for good alternatives
im under the same dilemma of whether to root or not, i have rooted all my previous phones from the s2,3,4,5,6 and the s7 edge. Now im actually considering not rooting this phone. The main things i used to root the phone for were
1) adblock - but as mentioned im going to try adhell when i get the phone
2) Titanium backup - Havent found a great alternative for this however a few people have recommend Helium
3) GameGuardian - Cant help but hack pvz2 and others when they keep asking you for money for gems/coins
4) Xposed - a)Currently using a mod for the AOD on the s7 edge which lets me set custom pictures on the phone which is amazing,
b) XtouchWiz to auto expand my audio group when pressing the volume button, havent found a replacement for this either.
But rooting would cost me the Iris scanner(need this thanks to the horrible position of the fingerprint sensor) and samsung pay(not that big a deal) and of course warranty.

I would say if you don't have to "don't root." My main reason for rooting is to get my mother language (font) on my galaxy which usually is only done by root + ifont.
I've come from a rooted Nexus 6P. I still use Power Toggles because it allows one touch location switching. I also use Lux and Llama for automation. Anyone know of good alternatives without root?

You can now set a picture of your choice on AOD - but if you mean behind the clock, that is not yet possible. Though still nice to be able to use your own photos.
Also, the volume rocker now at least lets you choose whether it controls the ringtone or media by default. I changed mine to media as I set the ringer to a specific volume and normally leave it that way, but media I change all the time.
