[Q] 0% battery and cannot restore factory - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
I own LG G2 Intl version. A couple days ago the device has suddenly stopped charging with only rising 2% after 12 hours of charging then kept discharging until reaching 0%. Then it would never go above 0%. While connected with the charger, I can switch the device on. On the lock screen it says it is charging but in the Settings it says not charging. I read a lot of posts here in XDA and outside suggesting once a software issue and another a hardware issue.
Anyways, I have tried then a lot of chargers like original Samsung charger, Laptop current, original ASUS Tablet charger with all failing to charge. According to LG Live Chat and summary of different posts, it looks like a hardware issue. But because the device is still less than three months old and still on warranty, I contacted the Reseller (Amazon), who said that I could return the phone.
But since then I have been trying to reset my phone to factory settings (as some suggested it may help as well) and more important to get rid of my personal data. But I cannot. When I go to settings to restore to factory settings, a 5% battery is required to restore. While on charger trying to reach the recovery menu through (Power-Volume-Down then release then both again after displaying the logo) does not either work.
Any workaround how to restore it to factory settings?
I tried to connect my phone through BT to BT-ADB my phone and adb reboot it into recovery, but did not work, as my device could not get IP for bluetooth assigned!! Strange!!! My device is not rooted and I do not want to root it, so that it does not get the warranty lost.
Any workaround how to restore my device to factory settings?
Thank you!

You forget to tell us what firmware version you are on, if you aren't rooted I assume you're using Kitkat/Kitkat bootloader?
Kitkat: Hold Power + Power Down, when LG Logo appears, switch to holding Volume Up + Volume Down.
Jellybean: Hold Power + Power Down, when LG Logo appears, let go and repress Power + Volume Down.
Note that doing a factory reset doesn't really stop your data from being recovered from nosey people, it just puts your data in a "last overwritten" state. To the naked eye you've wiped your phone but to be really safe it's good to wipe your hard drive using cryptographic algorithms multiple times, about 10. It may not make your data unrecoverable but at least anyone who wants to recover your data will have a hard time doing so. I wouldn't really worry about doing this in your case though.

Thank you for your reply. I know that to totally erase my data a multi-write cryptographic erase is required. But the point is that I just want to restore to factory settings, so that notifications do not get easily read, in the case someone tried to open my phone and discovered it is still not restored. I will try doing 7-pass erase. Do you suggest an app?
Besides, your method did not work either. I am on KitKat 4.4.2. This is what I have done (while on charger, as I cannot remove the charger: 0% battery!!):
1- Volume-Down first pressed and held, then Power button pressed and held.
2- Waited a couple seconds until the LG logo appeared. Then I let go the Power Button while still holding the volume down, then held the Volume-Up.
3- The phone booted normally!!
I tried the steps again and again, and many times with releasing both buttons upon logo appearance then holding both V-Up and V-Down (after also releasing the V-Down), and still no luck
What for an annoying problem

I kept trying again and again and it worked at the end
It succeeded when I let go the Volume-Down as well with Power-Button then repressing V-Down and V-Up again.
Thank you very much

Need help Tab is stuck in boot cycle

Hey guys, I'm currently deployed right now, I've been using my ATT tab extensively for surfing the internet, kindle and task management.
I didn't use it for a day, next day went to pick it up and it had a dead battery. I charge it up, go to turn it on and it boots up to the white glowing samsung logo.
From there it just loops the samsung logo and won't reload.
I've tried loading the ATT stock firmware with Odin but that didn't seem to work.
Any help you could provide would greatly assist here.
Thanks guys.
I am a noob when it comes to this stuff, but it sounds like you can still get to the standard recovery console if it exists on stock ATT tabs:
1. Make sure it is turned off (hold power & vol + & vol - for a while to force it to turn off)
2. With it off, hold power & vol + until the moment you see the samsung logo and let go.
3. Clear the cache (navigation within this menu may or may not be explained on your device once you reach it, on VZW tab vol +/- are used to move and home softkey is used to select)
4. Reboot
5. Cross Fingers
If that did not work, get back into recovery using the same steps, and this time try clear data/factory reset. Obviously, you will lose information/apps stored in the device's internal memory, but it shouldn't touch your sdcard, no guarantees though! Then after that runs, go ahead and clear cache again, then reboot.
Hopefully this gets you somewhere!
Thanks for the help, thought my TAB lost.
Another tip to use is to do the following:-
Press & Hold the Power button whilst at the same time touching the screen.
The battery indicator pops up.
The Tablet reboots.
Everything goes back to normal.

Power button not working after upgrade to 9.2.1.17 / US

Yesterday I have updated my TF101/US to 9.2.1.17 (not rooted, serial B50) and now my power button does not work at all. I cannot either shut it off (I can hold it for minutes, nothing happens), nor can I wake it up (the only possibility is to plug in the power). Reset to factory setting does not help
I talked to Asus, they suggested to send it to RMA, but I want to try to discharge it completely and check whether it helps.
Will keep this post updated if I find out something more.
Update: battery discharge did not fix the issue. Going to send the device to RMA.
Thanks for this post, this if for no other reason is why I will be dealing with my random reboots (they only occur once a week or so, if that often, for me so not a big problem, not like a broken power button would be) rather than updating the patch. However, this belongs in general or Q&A not development
Also for me you have to call assistance for a RMA: i could understand that power button does not turn off screen, but i can't understand, a part an hardware problem, how it does not shut down keeping power button down or why it does not turn on.
Yes, that sounds like hardware issue, but that must be very weird coincidence.
The complete story is that I just received device from RMA yesterday (LCD backlights were broken). I turned it on, it happened to have ICS already (it was sent with Honeycomb) and I was able to install all my software. Then a message re. new OTA update poped up, I decided to upgrade, and right after that power button stopped to work.
Yes, that can be hardware issue as well, that is why it goes to RMA. If I were 100% sure that this is software issue, I would wait some days hoping that ASUS will release bugfix for it.
Hmmm..the device will not power on if it is shut down? (How would you know this unless you shut down, and then can't turn it back on I don't know).
I re-read this and it is unlikely IMO that a firmware update could break your hardware, but I guess if a computer virus can break nuclear centrifuges anything is possible? Could be a coincidence..I feel for you, I had an over-discharge issue one night and my TF didn't want to boot up, and then flashed the red battery on the screen, but for those first few seconds my heart wasn't beating..I get the same feeling when I get a bad flash too lol
Luckily, the device wakes up when you plug the charger in. So, currently my choice is either to keep it running (disable sleep) or to have a charger and plug the charger in when I need to wake it up.
The bad thing is that the RMA "cycle" takes about two weeks.
Maybe it isn't a coincidence..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546640
Mine started this about two weeks ago before I picked up the update today... I thought i was the only one until I saw this post
I have misunderstood something: post says WAKE ON not TURN ON, ok this could be software related, but long press power button should be FORCE A SHUT DOWN...
Click this link on how to remove the front bezel. Then you can check the inside power switch to see if it's working:
http://www.techrepublic.com/photos/cracking-open-the-asus-eee-pad-transformer-tf101/6270147
That's the way I fixed my TF101 after I dropped it and the power button got stuck in the chassis.
Also read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391254
I think this is a solution to your problem, if it's not software related, which I doubt.
I get the same problem all the time, I leave it sitting for a couple hours come back and it won't turn on or off...
I also sometimes get the non functioning power button. I cannot consistently replicate it.
Sometimes it happens after it sleeps for awhile.
Sometimes it turns on when I open the tablet up while connected to the dock.
I have to hold the power button until it reboots itself. This is annoying after while. And even getting more so.
I'm also having a power-on related issue since the ICS update but didn't want to start a whole new thread for it. Ever since the update my Transformer boots into CWM by default. If I power it down completely then press the power button the EEE Pad logo flashes on the screen, I hear an audible "click" (best way I can describe it) from the device and it boots into CWM. If I select "Reboot device now" from the CWM menu it boots right back into CWM.
The only way to boot properly now is to hold the volume down/power buttons until the menu comes up to choose between Android and recovery and choose Android. (It actually defaults to this so I can just let it sit 10 seconds or so)
Any ideas?

exactly same problem as me now. holding volume down and power is the only way to start it up if it has been left alone for awhile. since the update.

Apparently it's a pretty common issue with the new version of CWM, as explained in this here thread.
So far the only solutions I'm seeing involve ADB commands or flashing a custom ROM.
fixed for now....
I had the same issue the power button would only cold power off the device. The only way to power back on is by connecting the charger.
I solved it for no in the following way which i do no recommend to anyone. I have opened the device and disconnected the battery for 5minutes. After connecting it back the device powered on with the power button as it should.
In my opinion it looks as if there's some power related controller that was "hang" and ignored the power button .
Any ideas ? Asus ?

[Q] Can't start phone?

Hi All,
I need your quick help, I dont know why but I cannot start my Samsung focus v1.3.
I tried to flash it by pressing power button + volume down + camera button but can't do hard reset.
When I am trying to remove battery and reattach battery again, then phone just showing "SAMSUNG" screen and again goes switched off.
Even I tried to press power button + volume UP + camera button then it shows only "Download Mode" screen only nothing happens after this.
Please need your help!
Many thanks in advance,
Since you just flashed it, I assume that it started up by displaying 'SAMSUNG" and seems to be stuck there.
If that is the case, you need to be patient. It takes a few minutes to get past that point. Every time I flash, I feel like I have done something wrong and the phone is bricked. But it always moves past that point after a few minutes.

But I haven't flashed my phone..
and from yesterday it is showing same 'SAMSUNG' name screen and then again goes switched off..
dont know what is going wrong.. or is it due to battery issue?
please help!
nah, it's the power button switch which somehow got stuck, it's a relatively common issue with the focus it seems
some people have reported that cleaning the button helps, others simply have replaced the whole switch at a local repair center... do what you think is best

But how power button works when I press (Powerbutton + Volume UP + Camera button), screen shows me "Download Mode" nothing happens after that. Yesterday whole I tried these options..
help
To flash magldr, you need that combo , press power button + volume UP + camera button then it shows only "Download Mode". To flash a ROM, you go Vol DOWN, and then reset your phone, or format, and then go back to the same menu, and when you see the do you want to format your phone stuff, you hit the back button and you'll see the magldr screen where you'll connect your USB and go forward with the flashing process. Perhaps try flashing an actual ROM to your phone. You can't really do squat from from the download screen but add magldr really. Hope that helps you.

because download mode disables the power switch (it even says "do not turn off"), that's why it seems to "work". power switch is active at the format prompt, however, so when you enter that mode the phone turns off immediately afterwards
do a little experiment: remove the battery, then put it on again while you're pressing volume down plus camera... you'll probably see a little surprise there
it's the switch. go repair that nao
i have the same problem, and many unfortunate people out there , but my phone on service center now, and i just wanna tell you about this thread this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007946, maybe can make you calm for a while... look at his problem solution

Galaxy S4 Turns Itself Off During Boot

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could help me troubleshoot my Galaxy S4 which turns itself off every time I power it on. Basically, I'll hit the power button and the Samsung logo will pop up with the the lock icon showing that the device has been rooted. Then, after a few seconds the screen will go black at which point I am unable to do anything to it other than pull the battery out and repeat the process. If I wait a few minutes though, I am able to push the power button without having to pull the battery out. In addition, if I attempt to pull the recovery menu up, it will begin to load but as before, the phone will turn itself off before I'm able to do anything useful. At one point I was able to somehow get it to load Android though that may have just been pure luck at work.
I don't believe that my root access is at fault here because I've had it for several months with no trouble to note. Immediately before this happened my power button began acting strangely in the OS. I attempted to factory reset in order to fix this and that's when this problem started. The only other which that I can think of that may have caused this is Safestrap which I uninstalled shortly after the power button began acting up.
Does download mode also reboot? Then it's definetely some hardware malfunction.
By the sound of it it's a malfunctioning power button.
Thanks!

Thanks and sorry for my english.
You need to unlock the device bootloader or restore the software using the msmdownload tool.
You need to hold the power button longer. Be patient it will boot.

Yes what he said. First plug it in for a few minutes to get it charged and then hold power button +vol up for at least 20 to 30 seconds. It will turn on you just have to hold button longer
