USB OTG enabled as standard - E 2015 General

I'd seen contradictory posts about whether the 2014 Moto E supported USB OTG. But I can confirm the 2015 version has it working perfectly. Plugged in my thumbdrive on an OTG cable, went to /storage/usbdisk in ES File Explorer and all my files were there. After having to jump through hoops to get it working on my Nexus 7, this is a pleasant surprise.

I tested several OTG devices on my MOTO E 2015 LTE US version.
mouse, keyboard - OK
memory stick - OK
USB audio - NO, recognized but no audio output
powered hub - OK, but touchscreen becomes slow responding
3g version doesn't support USB OTG.

I haven't had any issues on the Moto E 2015 4G LTE (model XT1527) connected a OTG device np, check that the drive your
connecting has a supported filesystem and verify that your OTG equipment isn't bad (I've had that happen before).

USB OTG
hi

It seems to depend on what you have. I have an XT1505 and an XT1527, both US versions bought direct from Motorola. Spec Device says both have OTG, Chainfire's USB Host test utility says only the XT1527 does. I've used a USB drive on this XT1527, I had a Go Phone version of the XT1527 before and I was able to use a USB keyboard (can't find my mouse) and an RT2832 SDR dongle with SDR Touch using a powered USB hub. That Go Phone (and probably most cheap versions) wouldn't tether and Motorola wouldn't give me the unlock code for the bootloader so I returned it. The retail version ($150) tethers fine and I've got the unlock code already.
I keep hoping it's a software/firmware deficiency on the XT1505 that it might be possible to change once it's rooted. At least this one can be rooted, I think. I've had no luck using OTG even with a powered hub. From Linux I can use ADB and fastboot, I can transfer files in and out of it with PCManFM which pops up when I plug it in (Debian). Motorola's Windows USB drivers I've had trouble with. I can tether with both phones over USB to Linux or Windows, the 1527's much faster.

"Mount USB On-The-Go storage" in Settings -> Storage is greyed out on my phone. Is it normally greyed out, then gets selectable when you plug the OTG cord in? (I don't have a cord yet -- want to know if it works first.)
I have a 2015 4G LTE (Verizon XT 1528).
Thx.

Galaxy S2 USB OTG

Ok, in theory Galaxy S 2 supports USB On-The-Go which means, it can be a USB host device for things like pendrives, digital cameras etc.
Granted of course, that you have the necessary cable.
Has anyone tried this feature?
Also, does the connected device have to be formatted as fat32?

FYI, mouse and keyboard are bluetooth.
I agree with the reviewer, big black mark on Samsung for not including the required cables with the phone for USB and HDMI.
at about minut 4 he says that usb mouse and keyboard doesn't work.
this is really a bad news for me

I am also afraid so When my phone arrives, I'll test it with ntfs & ext3.
Update on USB Mouse - some are working. Check my thread in the accessories forum for more details.
Hi there,
Got my £2 cable from Hong Kong (ebay purchase today).
Works great - even runs my 500GB HDD (this has to be plugged in to operate anyway - not sure USB powered HDDs will work).
If anyone's interested, the item description was:
Micro USB Host Cable for Nokia N810 OTG on the go N 810
No mention of the SGS2 - but I can verify that these work just fine!!!
Jamie
Any Nokia compatible OTG cable seem to work. I've successfully tested several different cables (all from eBay) with usb sticks, optical mouse and usb based memory card reader. However, usb based wifi sticks, fast ethernet dongle and tv-card didn't work. We probably need some new drivers and possibly more power (an usb hub could fix this).
I bought the Nokia USB OTG adapter too. With FAT32 Sticks ists working. But without NTFS support it is nearly useless for me.
umm...i have a nokia n8 and i took off the OTG cable that came with it before selling it in favor of buying a new Galaxy S 2.
However, the nokia OTG cable is perfectly rectangular, whereas the Galaxy S 2 cable connector is a bit "broken off" two edges, hence, using them is impossible together...but i managed to get them to work (in the shop where i tried the Galaxy S 2 at least, i didn't buy the phone yet).
I used a rasp, and filed off the edges of the Nokia OTG cable carefully to match the "broken edges" as the Galaxy S2's connector shape...took that cable to the shop where there is a working Galaxy S 2 unit, and connected it with a flash disk on the other side aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand......it worked !
If you have the caution and a rasp, i think Nokia's OTG cable should work too..they're cheap off ebay too, aren't they ?
Just ordered one of those off ebay (The Nokia N8 compatible one). Would receive it by tomorrow. I hope it works!
Here is mine ****ty review of USB mouse, USB keyboard and USB lamp.

here's mine, got it also from ebay.
If you can't get it to recognize USB mass storage I would suggest using USB Mass Storage Watcher: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.skidmrk.umswatcherotg. It will let you mount any type of external storage (NTFS, FAT 32/16, EXT, etc... It's free.
Also, this is a good USB host cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GGBYJ4?ie=UTF8&seller=A76FR6O1NBAXV&sn=T & S Electronics, LLC
I seem to get a "Clear USB" error when I plug in certain usb drives. I'm not sure if this is related to the drive being NTFS or if it is above a certain size. I can't for the life of me find any specs on the whole feature, including its maximum output power.
Could anyone shed some light on the subject from their trial and errors?
Thanks,
Alex
It works with a lot, but not all USB devices.

Connecting random stuff to OTG cable...

Just wondering what people have tried to connect to their SGS2s via OTG cables... I have tried the following:
Working:
Generic Logitech wireless mouse via USB wireless dongle
Logitech MX1000 wireless mouse via MX's docking station
Genius USB laser mouse
8GB micro SD card via USB adaptor
64GB SSD USB HDD via y-splitter for additional power
Wireless USB mini keyboard with touchpad (the touchpad worked perfectly & CTRL-ALT-DEL rebooted the phone!!!)
Not working:
Samsung ML-2240 laser printer (recognized but won't print)
Logitech STX webcam (unknown device)
Generic bluetooth USB dongle (unknown device)
87 views and no-one else plugging random USB **** into their phone? Just me then, lol.
i tried to plug in via usb:
generic usb mouse
many usb keys from 2 - 16gb
via bluetooth:
mouse
not working via usb:
generic keyboard
via hdmi and working:
lg lcd tv
projector philips
but via hdmi subtitles was not shown, only on phone
i will try printers today...

I tried my Logitech G15 and didn't have much success. Connected directly, it's simply a high power USB device, and via a powered hub, it sometimes is detected, usually isn't (seems to depend in what order it's connected). Regardless, I haven't managed to make it function correctly.
On the other hand, my Logitech MX 518 mouse works great connected directly.
My Logitech Webcam 9000 Pro is detected (even directly), but is unrecognized.
I did some tests with the OTG.
Working:
All USB sticks I tested with.
Keychain Spycam. You can even charge it with the phone Only the webcame mode doesn't work
Some old Logitech wireless notebook mouse
Standard Logitech mouse (one that came with a pc)
Not working:
NTFS drive(Haven't tried the NTFS drivers)
HTC HD2-ADB: High power device. Can't test with powered HUB, because the only one I have is the one in my pc display and that doesn't seem to work with my SGS2.
Razer Diamondback:High power device.
Logitech G15:High power device. (as reported above)
Saitek Cyborg Evo (Joystick):The LEDs in the joystick are working, but whatever I press, nothing happens on the device.
Cheap keyboard with backlight:High power device.
Edit: of courses wifi, Bluetooth and UMTS/HSDPA aren't working over otg either xD
Will update when I try more devices
Has anyone tried if it works with a Logitech G700 ?
Do I need 2.3.4 for all this ? I've heard I do ..
I was wondering if a usb dvb-t tuner should work to watch tv( i didn't try).
Hope someone will test it
Connected my digital camera Sony CyberShot DSC-W300 with USB and a new folder appeared in the Gallery app with all the pictures, impressed.
Didn't work with a Canon G5.
I tried a generic USB mouse and keyboard, several flash drives and my wireless mini-keyboard/mouse-combo via USB dongle
Everything worked

Nope, works on 2.3.3 as well.
Samsung implemented the host stuff from the start on.
Just wondering which OTG cables you guys are using. Also are there externally powered versions available (to power devices with higher requirements)?
I use a cheap 9 bucks one from the ew-Bay.
One day I left the wireless dongle for my minikeyboard/-mouse thing connected - phone was in standby all day, but battery was dead empty after a few hours *lol*
Xbox 360 wired controller : recognized as unknown device, lovely it looks it's NOT a power eating controller ! Lights turn on ok
Apple iPad 1G : could work great (device well mounting at first) but it's recognized as high power device, so... Not working.
Sony PSP : Works perfect
Another android phone (Xperia x10i) : guest detects well USB connection, it charges battery (!) and USB mount works. However, host doesn't detect anything.
I tryied my usb 3 drive formated with ntfs and it worked,:good: played mkv video nice and smooth.
As for the cable I bought it on ebay just standard otg cable
I tried Logitech M310 mouse and K360 keyboard both worked.

OTG problems

Does the nexus 6p have OTG support? I have tried searching and didn't come up with anything definitive. Some say it works some say it doesn't. I currently have this OTG: Monster USBOM-0064-L 64GB USB 3.0 High Speed Mobile https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S70GGKI/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_a92zwbV8J56A7

OTG works but you need a USBc OTG adapter.
Using a USBc to MicroUSB adapter with a MicroUSB OTG cable does not seem to work.
I don't have write access as a user, only READ ONLY
I tried several known good USB drives. I tried several file managers. The system can write and reformat the USB drives. The Nexus 6P is not rooted. Is this normal? Any suggestions to get it to work? My head hurts from banging it against a wall.
Sorry to post dig, but ive got a working adapter but im seeing an issue:
- Sub 5mb per second transfer speeds
This is with es file explorer, but on other android devices with the same usb2 stick i cam easily get 14mb per second.
What speeds do you guys get?
I was able to get OTG working when I got this adapter ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017MP658G ). Not every device works on it, however. Several USB thumb drives have worked with no issues, one inexplicably does not. Also, and more disappointing, is that my USB to SATA adapter doesn't seem to be recognized. I have a 120gb SSD that I used this method with my LG G3 and it worked fine.
Maybe it's the adapter? Changing setting from "supply power" to "transfer files" does nothing to change it. It sees there's a USB attached, but doesn't read the format.
I've tried several USB to type C adapters with stock Nexus 6p. All of adapters had USB3.0 support, it's important. They all worked fine with USB2.0 flash drives and they all didn't with USB3.0 flash drive. I've ordered some adapters USB2.0 to type C to test.
UPD: I've tested six USB to USB type C adapters with both USB3.0 and USB2.0 support - they all not working with USB3.0 flash drives and work wine with USB2.0 flash drive. Also: the phone can recognize the drive but can't mount it.
I'm sure this is the phone issue - I've seen successful mount of my test flas drive with one of adapters on some Xiaomi phone.

USB OTG

Does anyone know if the US unlocked version supports usb OTG or not?
It works natively with my micro USB drive. I haven't tried plugging anything else in though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
I have the Amazon version of this, and I was able to use a USB ethernet dongle for networking (till I got my SIM). Splitter let me add a thumb drive, too.
Seems a decently implemented OTG, AFAICT.

Usb Joystick Support

Excuse me if my English is unfortunate, I'm Argentine and I have to use Google Translate to talk to you.
Directly to the point, our Moto G5 plus or at least mine, is not compatible with the USB joystick, something similar to what happened with the Moto e2 LTE, but for the latter there was a kernel that allowed the use of USB Joystick:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/orig-development/kernel-srfarias-uberdt2wl-2016-04-27-t3366997
My question is this: is there any kernel or rom that enables the use of USB joystick?
I'm using AEX Pie rom and I can confirm my otg wireless dongle connects to my Xbox style controller and can play asphalt.
I'm pretty sure I have used it on my stock ROM while it was Android Nougat.

Yes, I understand that it is compatible with the wireless controls that are connected by a USB dongle, the problem arises when a USB Joystick is connected through otg, it is compatible with the mouse / keyboard but it is not compatible with the USB Joystick
It's as if I had not sent enough power to the USB joystick.
And it's not my joystick or my OTG since I connect it to a J5 prime and it works correctly
I must add that it is not my Moto g5 plus either, since it is the second one I own and in none there was support for the USB joystick
I found the same thing with my device and USB joysticks. They would power on, meaning the lights on the joystick would turn on, but no input would be detected.
I could only get Bluetooth joysticks to work.
