[Q] Buying galaxy s4 in 2015 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Buying galaxy s4 in 2015
S4 is still an amazing device when s4 was released it was 42,000rs in india and in 2015 it is 17,800rs which is same as price for galaxy e5
Which phone should i go galaxy s4 or galaxy e5
Things for which i use phone:
Calling
Photography
Gaming a bit
Performance
And main is moding, rooting and flashing roms

From what I can see. the S4 has better specs. The E5 only offers a 1.2 quad-core and 1.5 GB ram. Unless the E5 has newer technology (which would give it an advantage), the S4 is better.
I also think that the S4 has more support in terms of modding, rooting and flashing stuff.
Just make sure to get the GT-I9505 if possible. It seems to be more active than the GT-I9500

Hmm...I thought he posted a typo there and was asking about the S4 vs the S5. Comparing the E5 to the S4, here's what you'd be giving up. The E5 does not have LTE, being limited to HSPA+. The screen resolution and density are lower than the S4 (720x1280, 294ppi vs 1080x1920, 441dpi). Each device has a quad-core CPU, but each core of the E5 is slower than the S4 (1.2GHz vs 1.9GHz). Internal storage is the same, but RAM is only 1.5GB, versus the 2.0GB in the S4. The E5 camera is an 8MP shooter while the S4 has 13MP. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the E5 should actually take better pictures in lower light situations.
The S4 is the clear winner in every category. Even against the S5 it still holds its own. While the S5 does have a faster processor, slightly larger screen, and a beefier camera, the improvements are not significant enough to compel S4 owners to upgrade. People who never had a S4 however would benefit, or they can wait for the S6, which should become available in a couple months or so.

s4 still a beast at 2 years of age!

Yes the battery life is very dull on 3hours screen time
But style is like boss my friends boxy phones likke mi4,grandprime,grand2
S4 looks better

S4 octa GPU is'nt much behind than adreno 330

The Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A edition with the Snapdragon
800 chip inside is understandable getting the attention of
all benchmark-loving geeks. The smartphone was already
put through its paces in a couple of benchmarks last week,
but today, another batch of benchmarks has surfaced
showing what the Adreno 320 GPU is capable of.
The benchmarks that were used are GFX Bench 2.7, Epic
Citadel, AnTuTu 3D, and 3DMark benchmark, The Wi-Fi
adapter in the phone was put through some testing as well
to see if supports higher speeds than its Snapdragon 600
and Octa variations.
But now onto the benchmark scores, which were provided as
screenshots of chart tables. However, we’ve converted them
to our trusty benchmark graphs.
Starting off with the AnTuTu 3D Rating benchmark, the
Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A is the definite winner among
Android smartphones, but is far behind the iPhone 5, which
scores north of 13000 points. That’s unsurprising though, as
the first run is of the actual resolution of the respective
smartphone. Since the iPhone 5′s resolution is much lower
than the one of the Galaxy S4, it’s normal for Apple’s
smartphone to take that one.

However, when it comes to offscreen benchmarking, the
Adreno 320 takes the lead of the iPhone 5, but still loses
to the Octa version of the Galaxy S4.

Lastly, there’s Epic Citadel. There, the Galaxy S4 LTE-A falls

with the fact that the benchmark runs onscreen and the
devices hit the 60 fps limit of their displays.

wheres the default normal I9505 (Snapdragon 600) scores?
Quoted from GSM arena
"As you can clearly see, the Snapdragon 800 wipes the floor with both the*Samsung Galaxy S4 Exynos 5 Octa*andGalaxy S4 Snapdragon 600. In AnTuTu the difference between the scores is 3701 points, or just over 14% while in Quadrant it's more substantial at nearly 50%. Owners of the Octa and Snapdragon 600 versions of the phone*might feel a bit off*at this point"

Why? Because an updated phone has a higher GPU score in a benchmark that won't be seen in everyday use throughout the entire lifetime of any of the three phones? Er....no. I'm happy with my GS4 and that isn't going to change because an updated model has been released two months after I purchased it.
Some people really need to get a grip and break this stupid obsession with benchmark scores. Once you get beyond a certain score they're nothing but numbers.
Who cares anyway about benchmarks, they dont mean anything. there is also no single game that demands such a gpu power. yeah cool within 2 years maybe but then ill have the S6

I don't agree with that, i used a galaxy s3 and compared to the i9505 it is so much faster. Why should people feel a bit off just because a updated phone is out ? technique is changing everyday and not everyone cares about the newest stuff that got released. We already knew Samsung would release a updated version somewhere in the summer, people had a choice.
Hello do you know the price of the s4 LTE.A
Its about $900. For that our snap600 its better...

We all can try our best to justify our purchase of i9500 and i9505 but nothing can change the fact that the lteA variant is faster, battery efficient, has quick charge like s600, has low power voice command for wakeup, has significantly better gpu, native 4k playback, 4k video recording etc.
But we have to keep in mind that all this won't make our s4 any worse or better, it is still running the way it was.
The only thing I am disappointed with is the octacores poor optimisation and a half baked silicon for big.little. I dont care if the snap 800 is faster or not but the octacore has alot of potential. Only if it was optimized better!

It doesn't have any of the bolded parts. The only thing is better at is the GPU power and efficiency. That's all.
Don't forget that it costs about 100$ to 150$ more than the regular S4 so even if I have the option to peek the LTE-A variant 1.5 months ago I wouldn't cause it doesn't deserve the 100$ difference.
Guys I'm considering buying a s4-lte
But how's the ROM support
Are the ROMs for the snapdragon 600 comlaitable with it

Maybe, not much I think. And NO, the Snapdragon 600 and 800 are totally different. It might brick if you flash a S600 ROM on the phone.

You're incorrect. The chipset in the GS4 LTE-A does support 4k encode/decode. The MSM8974 is the first hardware from Qualcomm that supports that feature. Whether or not Samsung will enable it is another question but I am betting they will eventually through a software update.

Never said the chipset doesn't support it. Just the fact that it won't be used since the camera sensor doesn't support this.

May be the camera sensor wont support it but how about outputting the 4k encoded video files through the video player mate?

From where did you get the 4k videos and why would you want to do so? The display is FHD so you could take the FHD version of the Video/Series you want to watch... Don't forget that 4k videos are 4 times the size of a FHD videos so you probably won't be even possibly place 4k video inside your device
If you meant through a 4k TV monitor, then yes it'll be an advantage which very few people will be able to use.

Hmm. I got Elysium trailer. A 2min video sized 416 or so MB. My S3 has 720p display. But did the technology stop there? The CPU/GPU is capable of rendering a 1080p video via video player. And since snapdragon 800 can decode/output 4k videos the first thing I will be curious (if I had the LTE A) whether or not the S4 LTE A could play that out. I can make it to smaller whatever size (1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p) I want but that isnt my point.
If there is certain restriction that all the current gen 1080p SAMOLED/SLCDs are unable to output UHD contents that I am unaware of, then pardon me for wanting it. 4k videos though really rare till now. People rather watch the 1080p videos Sourced straight from 4k original like Amazing Spider Man.
Also, the making sense of outputting such high resolution stuffs off a comparatively small screen like 5"+1080p could be another question. But since the GPU has it, why not try it?

Amen to that.
Just tried a 4k video using mxplayer with all possible settings on my i9500 for the sake of fun. It struggles and plays at almost half the normal speed lol. I am curious to find out how the snap800s handle such video.
(Not that it is useful in real time, atleast not for me but yeah)

MX Player uses sw decoder for 4k video playback and unfortunately it uses low power(little) CPUs. My i9500 can't even play 1080p videos correctly by sw decoder in MX player cause of wrong processing priority which is kernel related while nexus4 can handle that without problem
I think A15 CPUs can handle 4k playback with no problems

Agree , every version of this phone launched have its pros and cons . even in the same hardware field , which is really not noticeable at all in real life use. every version is fast , snappy and can handle 1080p contents just well . just lets hope we get proper optimization for our devices that should be our main worry

GS4 or GNote 3

I currently Have the GS4, but have been looking at videos of the Note 3 and have found a new love. I have never toyed around with or entertained the idea of a Note device before. Should I make the jump to the Note 3?

It's going to be faster with the additional S-Pen features.
If you can handle the size go for it - that's the only debatable thing if money is not an issue.
make the jump. i sold my s4 weeks ago for note 3. i think the note 2 is just as fast as s4. Note 3 will be so much better then s4. Size could be your only issue

You know the differences are all easy to see. Just buy what fits your budget, and realize the Note 3 is better in every way, except if it's too big for your needs. I don't know of many people who even care about the size, in fact believe it's a benefit because of the larger screen.
Previously covered by many websites, it has the following improvements over the Galaxy S4:
Instead of 16-bit 48kHz sound, it has 24-bit 192kHz HD hardware. Thus superior sound playback and recording.
Instead of just 1080p video recording (1920x1080), it has 4K HD video recording (3,840 x 2,160)
Instead of just 1.9GHz quad core and Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset, it has Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset w/ 2.3GHz quad-core
Instead of Adreno 320 graphics chipset, it has Adreno 330 for faster graphics and other features improvements.
There is the addition of the S Pen and ability to detect pen pressure on the screen, which the S4 lacks.
Instead of the 5" screen 1920x1080 screen, it has a 5.7" 1920x1080 screen. There is loss of pixels per inch, in trade off for larger screen.
Instead of plastic body, it has metal bezel and faux leather backing "premium" style.
Instead of Android 4.2 stock, it has Android 4.3.
Instead of USB2 interface, is has USB3 for faster data transfer with PC and faster charging ability.
It should have other improvements, like faster internal storage, and perhaps a change in the Super AMOLED display, which might compensate for the loss of pixels per inch. The S4 has diamond pentile pixel layout, some people hope the Note 3 has something else which results in clearer display or more subpixels (but nobody knows yet, as these specifications have not yet been released)
Pretty much you are getting a much better device for your money with the Note 3. It has no downsides, unless you don't want the larger screen/device size.

[Q] Galaxy s5 camera (isocell) in s4 (mod)

Hello, mates!
I own a galaxy s4, IMO is a perfect device for dimensions, screen, and spaces optimizations.
I don't like s5 form factor, and the only one thing I really miss with s4 is the camera in low light conditions.
Compared with new sensors s4 can't make very good low light pictures, a friend of mine have huawei p7 and I can see that in darkness pictures are much better than mine take with s4!
My idea is to install s5 camera in galaxy s4, I think pinout could be the same (n^ of pins are the same, but I have no datasheets).
It could be a difficult mod because s5 flex cable is not straight like the flex cable of s4 camera:
s4: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/ODcyWDcxNg==/z/5Q0AAOxySoJTRkj1/$_57.JPG
s5: http://www.gigasoftaustralia.com/eBay/portableparts/productphotos/i9600/rcamflex/1.jpg
Probably it's impossible for a lot of reasons (drivers? from galaxy s5 is possible? Fit to the case? Cable?), but I ask because I know someone swapped camera sensors in other devices, and the only thing that makes it seem "old" the s4 is the camera performance :cyclops:

Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Specs, Features, Release date and price
Galaxy S7 is the upcoming smart phone from Samsung and Galaxy S7 Edge is the curved variant of the forthcoming flagship. Many new rumours and reliable reports appears every day about the upcoming Galaxy S7 flagship. Now we are going to roundup the most reliable of them.
Samsung Galaxy S6 flagship was launched back in March and released into the Global market in April with a price tag around $800. That flagship achieved a great success in the South Korean tech giant's history and also made a big step towards the use of powerful Chipsets and Most advanced technology in phones. Now Samsung is going to announce the next phablet in Galaxy Note series under the name Galaxy Note 5 in August ahead of IFA 2015 in September. This phablet also borrowed many specs and design from the most successful Galaxy S6 flagship. The Galaxy S7 is the successor of Galaxy S6 and is also going to bring a revolution in smartphones with its exclusive specs and features.
According to most reliable sources, Samsung is going to release the next flagship in Galaxy S series with 5.2 inches display. The predecessors of Galaxy S7 featured with 5.1 inches display and so that in the next flagship, Samsung may increase the screen size by one inch. Samsung is also going to reduce the side bezel size in Galaxy S7. So we will see almost bezel less Galaxy S7 in coming months. By reducing the bezel size, Samsung ultimately increases the screen to body ratio. Galaxy S5 features 69% screen to body ratio and Galaxy S6 features 71% screen to body ratio. So that the next flagship may feature screen to body ratio upto 75% because of the reduction in bezel size. Some rumours also claim that Samsung is going to make Galaxy S7 with flexible body and screen. If that really true, then we will see the S7 flagship with flexible body like LG G Flex. According to insider reports, Samsung already started working on Flexible displays.
Galaxy S7 Edge is the curved variant of Galaxy S7 and features two curvy edges like Galaxy S6 Edge. The dual curvy edged Galaxy S7 Edge offers special functions on both edges like pinning apps, contracts and other. The S7 Edge also features 5.2 inches display like Galaxy S7.
The Galaxy S5 was released in MWC 2014 with 1080p resolution and Galaxy S6 announced this year MWC in March with 2K or QHD resolution. The successor of Galaxy S6 may feature Super AMOLED Display with 4K resolution. As Samsung already going to release smartphones with 11K resolution in 2018, it is obvious that we see the Galaxy S7 flagship coming in 2016 with 4K resolution. The UltraHD resolution of 4096 x 2160 is a very impressive feature of Galaxy S7. So we will the forthcoming flagship with the pixel density about 890 ppi. The Galaxy S7 Edge flagship also features the same UltraHD resolution for its curvy edge screen.
Galaxy S6 is powered by Exynos 7420 Chipset which has brought a revolution in chipset with its 64-bit support and amazing benchmark score. It is an Octa Core Processor, four cores clocked at 1.6 Ghz and the remaining four cores clocked 2.0 Ghz. Till now it is the fastest SoC for Android phones and no other chipset can beat it in the near future. The upcoming Note 5 phablet also going to be powered by Exynos 7422 chipset which is the all in one solution for Ram, Chipset, Internal memory and Modem also. So the next Galaxy S flagship from Samsung also will be powered by another remarkable chipset like Exynos 7420 and 7422.
Samsung has been building custom Mongoose cores for about an year. Another side ARM already announced Cortex A-72 cores clocked at 2.5 Ghz. So Samsung may use any one of the above cores for its next Exynos chipset which will be used for Galaxy S7. So the upcoming Galaxy S flagship will be powered by an Octa core, 64-bit processor clocked at 2.5 or 3.0 Ghz. The chipset will be based on 14nm FinFET process like Exynos 7420 and consumes less power also. The full details about this SoC will be revealed in coming months. Galaxy S7 Edge also will be powered by the same chipset of Galaxy S7.
Previously Samsung used 2GB Ram for Galaxy S5 and 3GB Ram for Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge devices. The upcoming Galaxy Note 5 flagship is coming with 4GB Ram for first time from Samsung. By increasing Ram along with Processor cores and Clockspeed the speed and multitasking capability of the device increases enormously. According to present expectations, the Galaxy S7 flagship will boast 4GB or 5GB Ram. With this great amount of Ram coupled with the best processor, the next flagship from Samsung tops the score in benchmarks like Geekbench and Antutu.
In Galaxy S5 which was released in 2014, the South Korean giant used 16 MP Rear camera and 2MP Front facing camera. Surprisingly, in Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge also Samsung used the same 16MP Rear camera with some enhancements to the picture quality and speed. But the South Korean tech giant used 5MP front camera in Galaxy S6 to make selfies and video calling better. Till now, Apple iPhone camera is only the best in smartphone cameras. But the quality of the camera of Galaxy S6 is also similar to the camera of iPhone. As Samsung didn't increase the resolution of Camera in Galaxy S6, it will definitely raise the resolution of the camera of the next Galaxy S flagship. Current rumours and reports are saying that Samsung will use 30MP rear Camera with Optical image stabilization, HDR and other features in Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. The front camera resolution also may be increased to 8MP in the upcoming flagship. With this great front camera resolution Galaxy S7 may become the best selfie phone in future. Currently only a few phones are available with 8MP and above front camera resolution.
$800 for this handset? pretty expensive. But nice features, i admit
$800 for this handset?
$800 for this handset?
