Z3 camera worse than Moto G 2014? - Xperia Z3 General

Today I tested canera performance on my Z3 and my brother's Moto G (2014). The result scared me a little. I hope it's just me who thought the moto G ones were more vivid... what do u guys think?

Z3 captures the colors as they are in real life. Some would say that's good, but I'd rather get more vivid images instead ?

That's why you edit pictures afterwise.

So a high-end $600 phone needs pictures edited to make it equal to a low budget phone?

Well what did the actual scene look like????

It looked more like the z3's pics. The Moto saturation is a little high.

Yes, sadly.

Try the Camera FV-5 apk. Not that any particular app makes the pictures look better but it gives you a DSLR complete control feel to it. Also the Aviary apk (free) has some nice simple touch ups for pictures.

Whats wrong with the pics?
The Moto pictures look as said saturated blurred and low in quality.
The camera of the Z3 is the best one I ever had. Even in low light enviroment it makes awesome pics.
Compare some pics in the evening when u are watching tv with lights out and be happy to have a phone with such an awesome cam.
The Cam and the Display are the 2 things that keeps me away from installing CM.
If u want more colors play a bit around with the special effects f.e. hdr.

So, I wasn't there but this is what I interpret the pictures as.
The Moto G pics aren't really over-saturated, they just lack dynamic range (difference between dark vs light areas). They essentially tuned the sensor so that if this sort of thing happens, it chooses the brighter side of the scene. The leaves and darker areas can't be recorded as dark as they actually were, so it chooses to make the overall picture just brighter. Sony does a much better job of capturing the light areas such as the concrete and also the darker shades and leaves. The other difference is white balance, the Sony chose something a little cooler, and the Moto warmer. Without being there, tough to say which is more accurate but from the pics I'd say the Sony got it right.
Easy fix, force the Sony to overexpose or use something like pixlr to boost exposure.
Second picture is much of the same, the thing that jumps out is the red colors. In the moto it looks orange, in the Z it looks much more red. Again, if I had to guess the Z got it right.
Now, this is all great with plants, rocks, and garden hoses, but what happens when you take a picture of people? Those Moto pics are going to look off, like people's faces look like cake and lack the proper color it needs.

Thats kind of the while point of "point and shoot". I should be fiddling with settings when im trying to capture that moment. Superior auto setting is an absolute garbage

Seriously what is wrong with you guys.
Have you ever used an high quality cam?
In every shop there are phones where you can test them.
There are more tests in the net as you could ever read in your lifetime.
So if you don't like it don't buy it.
Should sound familiar as an iPhone user xD
Have just done a few shots but I'm sure you can save your favorite settings.
If this is too mich work to do I would suggest to sell your Z3 and buy an Moto or similar and stop annoying us.

I personally think the z3 camera is one of the best out there not hard to use manual mode

Sorry. I should've quoted the person who said that that he prefeerd the more vibrant colors over the more accurate. I meant that if you want it more vibrant you should edit it so and let the original photo be correct.

I use 8MP on manual it does well, it's just "Superior Auto" that sucks.

Image Compression! Let us express!

With a quick searched on the internet, I noticed that the Galaxy S4 has a sensor camera equivalent / equal Xperia Z, but your pictures are generated with 4Mb to 6.5MB, while the Xperia Z is 1Mb to 2.5Mb.
Follow the link to get an idea of the difference image!
We must inform Sony that we are completely unhappy with the image compression!

First off, replace "we" with "I". Second, SGS4 uses an unknown sensor with the same megapixel count as the Sony Exmor sensor, but then megapixels mean nothing anyway. Also, while there is a big discrepancy in file size, there is a not very big discrepancy in photo quality while zoomed in (compare photos at http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4_vs_sony_xperia_z-review-915p8.php) if you look at image sharpness and ignore colour saturation and that sort of things. I don't see why the XZ photo file sizes should then be doubled just because the SGS4 has larger photo sizes.
compression isn't bad, in my opinion
its the same sensor.check anadtech s4 dissasmbly.by the way they are using same sensor with different module.i dont have a Z or S4 to talk about quality though
The images quality will much much more better if Sony reduce the compression, or at least let user decide jpeg quality.
I think the issue isn't about compression but denoise algorythms.

Its a combination of both compression (jpeg) and noise suppression (when using high ISO)
The amount of compression/suppression applied is ridiculous.
Does the "developers" of the cam part know anything about digital photography at all?
Paying premium for a low end camera....Sony think the customers are stupid?

With pleasure. (both are done on auto/superior auto respectively)
Xperia Arc: ~2.5MB, super long exposure times and thus overexposed images
Xperia V: ~2MB, slightly oversaturated blues
No XS though
But seriously, XZ is pretty darn good for the file size already.

Show off those pics!

I'll post a whole bunch of shots and comparisons to my S5 around 8-9 est if all goes well. I did notice that reds were a bit over saturated in the samples I took at Verizon. Which was a big issue for me with my original Moto X.

Here is a couple from today....
Are these being alerted when uploaded? I assume they aren't 21MP files being uploaded to the forums
I think the problem is people have crazy expectations. Its a good camera but its never going to touch a dedicated camera with large sensors. I'm now switched to Google Camera because Moto one doesn't really seem to be much better.
These are using Moto camera still.
Low light shots I took while messing around with our prototype mini 3D printer this morning. Just quick snaps, no effort at all... Pretty impressive, although reds seem to be a little off -- oversaturated.

However, I do have a post with some serious concerns about the camera (link below) that I need to further test this weekend.

I'd have to say with the physical limits of sensor and aperture size the output is pretty decent and not overly over processed. A raw output would still be nice though.

Z5 camera VS Iphone6 plus, SGS6, LG G4, Z3

Here they did a test with most new phones including the Z5! Shame i cant link the photo's directly so you have to go to the link it self http://www.phonearena.com/news/First-Xperia-Z5-vs-iPhone-6-Plus-vs-S6-vs-Z3-vs-G4-camera-samples-comparison_id73408
The Z5 takes pretty awesome shots and its way better then the z3 camera. The colors look so much more correct and in some phones it beats the sgs6.
Edit:

the red on the iphone looks washed out or better said, the amount of light on the car is captured more on it. the z5 captures the real color from my perspective
In my opinion Z5 is better than Iphone 6+ and GS6, colors of the 2 is slightly saturated.
Regardless of color accuracy, the resolution increase still does not helps getting sharper images. There is too much noise reduction applied, especially compared to iPhone 6. Apple here does a decent job although I'd rather have much more noise and no NR applied in camera. Worst offender is LG, which applies an insane post-NR sharpening.
I think we should wait for production samples and hopefully some 3rd party app that can leverage better on this new sensor. Otherwise there is no real advantage against Samsung or Apple.
As for color accuracy, it really comes down to the app and how much processing is done. On my screen (which is calibrated, but it's not best quality panel) and to my eye Z5 has decent overall color rendition, but I prefer the G4 in the first picture (less punch but the overall colors are more accurate) and the iPhone in the third.
In the end, we are not yet at compact camera level - maybe next iteration (z6 or z7 or whatever they will call it). I'd really love to have an RX100 performance squeezed into a phone

Am I the only one seeing that low light photos look good on Note 5. Specially the example you gave, Note 5 has more details compared to Z5. Yea we all know that Samsung dose produce more warmer pics which makes the photo looks yellowish, but if you take a closer look the noise reduction is so aggressive in Z5.

P.S: Ah no wonder you seem to mix up the two photos. Note 5 indeed do look better here.
Sony for some reason still cannot make a good camera. Note 5 does look much better in almost every situation.
Also look at the sky in that one pictre. Z5 completely burnt while Note 5 shows some nice detail

Think its time you get some glasses bro. The first one and clearly the best low light photo is made with the Z5 not the note. Even if you zoom in on the billboard etc you see that the note blurs and has to much overexposed. But both are good camera's tho/.

I am a Sony Fan But i Must admit the samsung note 5 is killing sony camera what a poor detail in z5 i hope there is improvement in the last release
Yea Note 5 has a great camera indeed, but I am pretty sure this is related to Software, and eprice device doesn't have the latest camera UI that means it's not running on the latest build, so untill then we can't really say which is better.
But overall Sony has good colour accuracy when it's day-time, I hope it'll be fixed with updates. I really want is more control over the camera such as Manual shutter speed and raw. Hope to see more improvement before the phone's released.

Specially when it comes to Camera software they don't seem to be doing great.
I am always surprised that despite making good cameras and selling camera parts to other phone manufacturers, Sony phones have the worse cameras in the mobile phone industry. The Z3 camera is terrible relative to Apples and Samsungs and their previous phones were even worse. Hopefully they finally fix it with the Z5.

Make camera "warmer"?

Hello everyone, I have an S7E, and I've been using it for over a month. I love the device to bits... But I am having a problem. I don't like the temperature of the colors that it produces. I am coming from the G4, and the colors seem to be warmer. Is there a way to make pictures a bit warmer right off the bat? Maybe a filter or a custom setting? For example, if you have seen this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al9i0VnV0M4

Even in my own test shots from the G4, G5 and S7E, I see that the colors are usually "brighter" or more "washed out." I know it's not my unit, since I have 2 S7E and I had another one before this for a total of 3.
Nothing is WRONG with the camera, or the pictures... I'd just like them to be a bit warmer... Is there any way to achieve this? Thank you
Use the Pro mode in the camera and set custom white balance. That's the best solution you can find. Or edit the pictures after you have taken them. Not perfect solutions but nothing else you can do about it really.

Look at that screenshot...how do you actually see the scenery if you look at it with your own eyes ? Like the right, or the left image ?
The G4 pictures are not warmer, they just exhibit a "bad lens" effect, looking like they are shot from behind a glass window. Look at Canon for truly warmer tones.
PS: you can always adjust white balance in Pro mode.

Right is more true to life. I have a G4, G5 and S7E. I love the S7E for everything except the camera colors. Images are always more true to life colors on the G5 and G4. My partner has an S7E as well and always says that he prefers the colors not so true to life, but I do. That is the only flaw I can find in the S7E. So I was wondering if there was a way to fix it. White balance can be changed for every shot. But I'd have to adjust for EVERY shot. That's not very convenient. I really enjoy using mobile cameras since they're always on me.
Anyways, thanks. I just thought there would be an easier way.

The right picture is actually an example of horrible dynamic range, maybe like 8 stops.
I have vast experience with cameras, including many DSLRs, and the S7/Edge is the first smartphone camera that does not exhibit the "small/bad lens" and low dynamic range effect, pictures actually look like what you see, instead of looking dark and with low dynamic range. What you see in the G4 pictures is actually low dynamic range of the sensor, combined with a poor lens. The resolved detail may be high, but you always know that the pictures are taken with a smartphone. The S7/Edge pictures actually look a lot like DSLR pictures (especially Nikon) color-wise, you don't immediately know that they are taken with a smartphone. Find some Nikon DSLR samples and compare the colors.

I guess personally I couldn't disagree with you more.
I can personally guarantee that this color of the sky on the S7E is not the correct blue. I was there personally and shot these two pictures in auto mode. Both the wall and sky are far too bright and those are not the actual colors of the sky and monument.
But this is to taste. There are other shots where the clouds were completely eradicated by the Samsung and were there with the LG. And there were of course plenty of shots where the LG over exposed and the Samsung did it spot on! I'm not complaining about the shots. All I'm saying is that the LG is more accurate to real life colors in well lit situations, which is what I'd like to get on my Samsung. From what I've come to learn is that the LG has a color spectrometer or something like that which really makes a difference in some shots.
Going to back to what you said, the colors are lighter on my Samsung devices (3 S7E in my house) than on the LG devices (2 retires G4 s and 1 returned G5 and a new one on the way). Nothing wrong with it, it's just not my favorite color representation... [emoji4] I love my S7E regardless!

Disgusting sharpening

The first thing I noticed when using the camera on this phone was how the images looked over processed. Most notably, I did a digital zoom photo yesterday and the sharpening on it was disgusting. It didn't even look like a photo.

See what I mean? All I did was zoom in and take a photo. It looks horrible.
Look at this picture for example
Even just zoomed in a bit you can see way too much sharpening going on
Now I know this phone is a "budget phone" but it supposedly has the same lens as the Galaxy S7 so that isn't really an excuse. It looks like it comes down to it being the processing that moto put in.
Can anybody out there please let me know if rooting my phone and shooting RAW will produce cleaner photos? I would have to guess so, since I can control the sharpening myself. I haven't been able to find any RAW samples from this phone.
is it a software thing? I've converted to snap camera on whatever device.
I'm afraid it's in the firmware. Any camera app I've tried yields the same results
U should probably return or replace u your phone I had the same issue without even zooming
The phone couldn't focus on things right next the camera mine also had pink tints while recording
So I got mine replaced
Now everything works good
It's also the processor. The G5 plus has the 625 while the S7 had the 820 allowing for much better image processing.

Well it focuses just fine, and pictures in day light look alright but there is some heavy noticeable processing going on in the moto firmware.
This picture looks pretty good but if you zoom in just a bit you can really see the over sharpening.
Here is a photo of my Nexus 5x
It looks much cleaner to me. Less over processing and less sharpening artifacts. The processor on the G5 Plus should be pretty comparable to the 808 in the N5x so I really don't think its a processor issue. It seems to me like it was a design choice by Moto. All of the sample photos I have seen also have too much sharpening. I am strongly considering just rooting the device and shooting raw. At least then I can control the sharpening myself
Well then we would have to wait for an update then

It should make no difference, if you do the same processing in software - other than perhaps taking slightly longer to process the photo?
Otherwise, we'll have to shoot RAW if we want the best quality I guess?
It seems to me however, that any settings affecting the image processing quality should have parameters which could be changed?

The processor contains the ISP or the Image Signal Processor which controls HDR, white balance, auto focus, exposure, color filters and so on. The better the ISP the better the image. So while the 2 phones have the same sensor they will never have the same image results because they have different processors and the more powerful chips have better ISP on board resulting in better images even with the same sensor.
The strength of this camera's focusing is in the sensor chip - "dual pixel focus".
All the other things you mention such as white balance, HDR, color filters are applied after the RAW image is taken - so, there's really no reason that you couldn't generate the same quality of image.
if nothing else, I'm upgrading my everyday knock around (2015) moto e. I won't complain toooooo much.
I have to agree with the OP on this one - there is some horrendous post-processing going on with this phone.
I'd love to get that to stop - even if we have to go to RAW/DNG to get it.
Has anyone done the root/Freedcam method described in another thread on here and gotten DNGs from this camera?
I'd love to see how they look... I'll eventually do it when LOS gets stable enough.
wait couple of days more, there will be some nice mods incoming for g5p camera.

Looks like a promising photo to me!
I'm new around XDA... is will flat field correction and NR come with time, or is this the best we'll get?
