[Q] Lock, unlock, screen tap sounds on SM910P - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

To start, I'd like you all to know I've spent the better part of a day searching google and elsewhere for an answer to my quandary. If there is an answer to this somewhere that I've missed, I apologize. I am at my wit's end.
I'm running a rooted SM910P with MasterZen88's rom. I have hardly anything extra installed (just SuperSU, FX, TB). I cannot for the life of me get the system to use screen touch and screen lock sounds that I place in /system/media/audio/ui. I have adjusted the permissions for the new files as appropriate (rw-r-r), though they were properly set from the get-go anyway. I've tried restarting the phone and clearing the cache several times. No luck. Those sounds will not work - they are always the awful default sounds, even though I've explicitly overwrote those files.
It seems that the sounds in question are actually being read from somewhere else, but in my exploring I haven't been able to find them. Perhaps embedded in some of TW's apks? I don't know a whole lot about this. The most perplexing thing is that some of the sounds I replaced work perfectly fine - the pen detach/attach, the power on and power off, and even the charger connect sounds all work just fine. If anyone has any ideas or could point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

As an update, I did find out that there are some raw resources in the default Keyguard.apk that I assume (I have not tested because I'm still learning how apks work) are being used in place of the /system/ui directory ones, but that's only really for the lock screen - it doesn't explain the screen touch sounds not working when replaced. Still at a loss there.

Bluetooth working? Got limitations?

Hello all . . . need I say it? But, I'm new. Not just to this forum, but also to pda/smart phones.
I got an O2 XDA Mini S yesterday and began playing. Firstly, quick basic question, are all these the same thing:- i-mate, K-JAM, HTC Wizard and O2 XDA Mini S?
OK, next, I've been reading some sites today and one of the most repetitive things I've found is the recommendation to remove the O2 software from my device - on the basis that it is causing it to run slowly. But, I haven't found that to be the case, but remember I'm new to these toys.
I also came across Magic Button for closing apps properly, not just hiding them.
Lastly, before I move on to the subject of this post - can someone clarify the difference between a hard reset and a soft reset. In particular, if I do a hard reset, do I loose eveyone from my Contacts?
But, here is the question that relates to the subject:-
I turned on bluetooth and tried to send a picture from a Samsung D500 to the XDA Mini, but no luck. I also tried with a Samsung E720, no luck there either. Lastly, I also tried with an Apple PowerBook G4 and it was unsuccessful also - but it was more informative - it basically suggested that the capability didn't appear to be there.
I did turn on bluetooth on all the devices and I also made the XDA Mini discoverable. The two phones could scan and find the XDA, as could the Apple, but neither of the phones could retain the name of the XDA in the list of previously identified devices (I hope that is clear what I mean). The Apple could retain the name, but still can't interact with it.
I have tried changing the COM ports round - ie COM 7 incoming COM 6 outgoing AND COM 6 incoming and COM 7 outgoing, but that didn't make any difference.
The most bizzare thing (not really all that bizzare I suppose) is that Infra-Red works, so I could transfer stuff (albeit awkwardly) from my old phone to the XDA.
I was wondering (probably stupidly) if the 02 software could be limiting the functionality associated with the bluetooth, or if Windows has restricted it to only be used with ActiveSync [I just can't think of any other reason for it not to work].
Any light that could be shed on this would be appreciated.
Cheers.
1. Yes they are all the same things.
2. The o2 software tends to be quite animated, this slows down the device a little, it also masks the way the phone was intended to be used. Its not really necessary which is why its best to remove it. Plus, it free's up memory for other stuff.
3. There is a lot of talk on these forums about different programs that can "really" close an app as opposed to "minimising" to the background. There are "for's" and "against" arguments regarding this. It is true that programs only minimise when you press the "x" button but it does state, er, somewhere, i think it was in one of the help files in the device, that memory is managed automatically by windows and that programs are shut automatically to make room for new ones if memory becomes low. So you shouldn't have to worry about running out of memory, also when minimised the programs appear quicker than if they had been shut down, usually from where you last were too. This can be a good or bad thing depending on the point of view of the user. However, from my point of view and i think i share this with many other users, i "feel better" knowing that a program shuts when i've finished with it and it will start from a common point when i next open it. I think this is more down to the fact that people are used to this than anything else.
The program i use for this purpose is called SmartSkey, made by one of the people on this forum,it can do either and you can have an exception list of apps that minimise only, which is quite useful. Also it makes navigating the device easier with one hand, which is REALLY handy, it may be worth looking into.
4. A hard reset will make your device appear exactly how it did when you first switched it on. Anything at all that was on there will be gone, so yes you will lose your contacts. There are 3rd party applications you can use that can back up the whole device though. A soft reset just restarts the device and nothing is lost. Its equivelent to restarting a windows PC as opposed to Re-formatting one.
5. As regards you bluetooth problem, the only thing i can think of is that i have noticed that the device needs to actually be "ON", not in "sleep mode" or obviously "OFF", in order to successfully receive files via bluetooth. If it is in sleep mode then devices can see it but can't connect. I can honestly say i've had no problems as you describe with bluetooth names and stuff on mine.
Sorry i can't help you more with the bluetooth, but i hope the other info was of help to you. Enjoy your new toy, they are very customisable and as a result of which can be very annoying too.
Be prepared for late nights and hair loss, else, ignorance is bliss
Thanks for the reply Clivectmob. Very informative.
I've been playing again. This time I sent a picture from the XDA to the Samsung E720 and I was successful, but it doesn't seem to want to work the other way around . . . very strange.
I might bring it back and see if they can figure it out.
If anyone else fancies a shot at a solution, just fire away, I'll take any suggestions.
Again, thanks Clivectmob
Last question.
If I take the O2 software off of this, can I return it to factory settings by doing a hard reset?
Yes you can, as I said, it will be as it was when you first switched it on.
All that software is stored on a hidden ROM on the device, when you hard reset it goes through a customization sequence afterwards where it puts it all back on. One trick is to wait until it displays the customization message, then pull out the battery. Switch back on and it will not customize it, but then you need to manually configure all your conection settings and so on, so you need to be reasonably up on the use of them for that.

This thing hangs more than a....well something that hangs about 4 or 5 times a day...

Seriously unimpressed so far.
This thing has hung 5 or 6 times at least today (day 3....) and about the same yesterday
If this keeps up, I'm binning it and reverting to HD
Unbelievable!
What did you do ? Any pattern ?

Not much info there, my pictures hang up... on the wall everyday.
What are you doing? What have you been doing? Is it due to memory being full (as apps aren't closing)
Maybe I'm not hip to the slang but what do you mean it "hangs" or "hung"?
You must have a duff unit!
Well mine has been completely spot on!
Maybe its something you have installed causing issues? Try uninstalling things one by one to see if that rectifies any problems you may have.

"Hangs" means "crashes" or, more precisely "becomes completely and permanently unresponsive to anything less than a soft reset".
Possibly - and yeah, I know, that's next port of call TBH - it's just really pissing me off at the moment - NONE of my other HTC devices have ever behaved like this.
Just for the record, I've figured out exactly WHAT makes it hang - I open file explorer and navigate to the 'Windows' folder - bang....I get the rotating four colours and it's back off/battery out AGAIN
Thus far I've only installed Kinomaplay (which ISN'T behaving as it should IMO....although it performs it's media functions perfectly)
Coreplayer - which works ok
SPB Time - again, works 'ok' (both are really f..king fiddly to use/setup with this screen - which is ANOTHER thing I'm not impressed with at all - I've had an iPhone in the past - [capacative] screen response was perfect - this one?? have to jab at it several times sometimes to get the desired result and accuracy just isn't good for smaller targets)
One thing I have noticed is - I've only installed those 3 programs but almost all the device memory is used up!?? Unsure if that would cause an issue with it hanging and I've had loads more than this installed onto mt HD and was nowhere near the device memory limitations.
Hmmm....

I really would consider that you may have a duff unit. There are loads of peoeple on here who advise the screen is too responsive! Plus the lack of memory sounds like the biggest issue.
When you navigate to the windows folder, do you actually let it load or do you just leave it? Reason I ask is that there are thousands of files in there and it does take a while to read them. It did on my HD anyway.
Seems like when reg edits have been done to get task manager working how we are all used to it, should be working better.
Oh, software is made for resistive screens so some presses wont register as the software is more than likely looking for a more presice tap rather than a finer splodged over the actual area its looking for a response in. Should be fine later down the line when more things are brought to capacitive screens.
Hope it all works out for ya
That is true - the menus are a little small for finger use - so it will be a case of waiting I guess.
I removed all the progs that I'd installed already (includng 'microsoft my phone' - forgot about that one)
Screen is very responsive most of the time - but then sometimes it just seems to space out- almost like you catch it off guard - not what I'd expect frankly
It does eventually load the windows folder in explorer - but it takes about 2 1/2 mins to do so - no other folder does that to it, nor any other action - and it wasn't doing that up until yesterday
Hard reset next [if i can figure out how...] - if that doesn't yield significant improvement then it's back to TCR for an exchange (provided some more units have turned up by now!!)
Cheers though
Definitely a problem there, my windows folder loads instantly.

+1 ...... Mine loads in a split second
My phone doesnt hangs, but my /windows folder takes about 1/2 minutes in load.
No problems here either. One recommendation though for those with slow file list loading: try to enable and up the caches (which are stock) with Advanced Config. You will gain some more speed!
Hard reset and we're back to full speed again - I guess it was one of the programs that was screwing it up - thanks all for the 'benchmark'
I'm a bit suspicious that it was kinomaplay, as that was [occasionally]interfering with other operations by overlaying itself on top at times and was hard to get out of that loop as the 'X' [close] box wasn't always *really* there (only shown on screen but no actual function)
I might try it[kinomaplay] again - only this time try and figure out why it associates itself with image files that I'd rather the OE windows prog opened.
Thanks for the tip on Adv.Config Tnyynt - TBH I'd not tried to load that one yet, I'll try that in a sec though (it was a godsend on the HD)
There was definitely something funny going on with the memory space on the device, as after the hard reset I'm back up to '116MB free of 181MB' - whereas, even once I'd uninstalled all that had been added - and deleted additional ringtone wavs - I only managed to get a max. of 53MB available showing.

Sounds like Kinomaplay is searching and associating with files in the background. I think it may be set to do that by default but you can tell it not to in the settings - only trouble is you may have to wait for it to do it's thing as not sure if you can interrupt it. I got so fed up with the programme on the HD I trashed it - lovely interface though
Strange thing with Windows folder loading, with the "normal" Explorer it takes my device a very long time too (first few times did a soft reset because i thought it was hung also), but with Total Commander explorer the Windows folder is there instantly, sounds like Explorer runs into something, just have to figure out what though.
Crazy . . . . . . . . . . .
Mine takes just a split second to load windows folder!
But it crashes 2 - 3 times a day! Without doing nothing! When i try to unlock it, screen wont go on! Battery off, here we go again! And i got the no sound problem.. After 3-5 calls, i car hear what others are saying but they cant hear a word from me!! This is happening all time.. (tested all this even with stock rom and no apps installed or any tweak etc..)
I read here in the forums that other people have similar problems..And in italy the distribution stopped because of defected rom??
Some say it heppened in france too.. (allthough i live in greece, i got mine sent from france, expansys headquarters..)
So maybe its roms problem? Or just me having a possible defected device..?
Any of you with freezing problems etc..??
Some hangs and freezes in here too, latest was this morning when I had my phone plugged in the charged over night. I tried waking up the phone to check time so I press the power button: Button lights go on but no image on screen, had to take out battery and restart the phone.
Also I have had a few random hangs that required a soft reset too. I have installed the Electopia demo and the OpenGL speed tester. Also installed .net compact framework 3.5 because an app from marketplace said to require it.
I hope HTC takes care of this issues in an upcoming rom update! Otherwise the phone seems fine, although maybe a bit slower that I've seen in the pre-production reviews and videos which is odd...

I noticed that the hangs have something to do with the charging of the phone,no matter if its via usb or power pluged. Thanks for confirming though.. This is MAJOR issue for me..You think that your phone is ok in your pockets but it is shut down!!
About the sound problem i mentioned before?
Knock on wood my HD2 is rocksolid for now! Everything is fast and stable!

TouchFLO 3D home screen freezes

Sometimes I just hate my phone. I have an AT&T HTC Pure. I haven't done any modifications to the ROM or anything, just installing a few apps. Today my phone turned itself off due to low battery, so I put it on the charger for a couple hours. When I needed it again I turned it on and the HTC TouchFLO 3D loaded, showing my background and the big ugly clock along with my appointments. I noticed after a few minutes the time was off by... a few minutes. The screen had completely frozen. I couldn't use the slider at all. There goes my People, Music, Calendar, Weather, and Programs tabs I use all the time. I soft reset and it comes back, looking normal. I go to use the slider and it freezes in mid-motion... never to move again. I press the Start button and my Start menu comes up. I close the Start menu and I can still see it, although it doesn't respond and the X is gone from the upper right-hand corner. I tap the Notifications bar and my notifications show up. I click close and it's still up, just not responding to taps (frozen is my guess). I've reset it a multitude of ways now all with the same result... even taking out the battery.
I don't get this. It was working fine just a short while ago. I've reset the thing before and not had this problem. I haven't installed any apps since the last time I had to turn it off due to low battery, and it came up fine from that. What could be causing this?
The real thing is this has happened before. It's like if it ever has to reload the TouchFLO interface it just bombs 1 out of 20 times. Hell I was playing around with Android for the thing, which resets the phone when you want to go back into Windows, and not had this problem the whole time I was testing it. If my phone shuts down, roll the dice and I might get lucky enough for it to come back without this problem.
I resolved it before by doing a hard reset. Lost all my stuff. That sucks for what seems no good reason at all. It's not like I was modifying system files or screwing with registry settings. It isn't even a custom ROM.
Any insight on what could be causing this, and how to get it back to normal?
I'm regretting not buying an Android phone every day anyway, but thanks to 2yr service agreements and lack of sufficient disposable income to dump AT&T I'm stuck with this thing for a while.
Thanks in advance for any help and understanding!
Your issue is that you are on the stock ROM.
That's why XDA exists, because stock ROMs are full of bloatware, eating up memory, and lacking any performance tweaks.
Cooked ROMs are not a cause of issues but a solution.
I hated my phone out of the box, but now it rocks...
With that, if you are going to stay stock, I suggest you get a backup program and hard reset.
At this point I'm very interested in custom ROMs, yet I know little about them. Looks like its time to get on it and read up what I can.

Start with the Hard SPL thread. A link is located in the 2nd sticky.
This is the precursor to flashing a custom ROM.
Once successful, you can cruise the ROM forum for the ROM of your liking.
It's things like this that make me so glad I found this site
You can try installing "CleanRAM" and running it after every initial boot to clear excess memory. You can also configure CleanRAM to schedule your memory cleaning. I recommend you to use "Level 2" cleaning though.

Unfortunately CleanRAM does absolutely nothing. When TouchFLO 3D re-loads it lasts almost literally 2 seconds before freezing at whatever I'm doing. I've even used the customized process cleaner to stop as many processes as I could (or just manila.exe) and it still will freeze when the interface comes up.
I've been able to get it to the standard Windows Default look and it works now, so that will enable me to back up what I'm going to. If I'm going to have to do a hard reset anyway, might as well put something better on there.
Maybe this might help
i experianced the same problem and the cause was i sync my entire e-mail acc. on the pure and it ran ok untill i restarted it and it boom hanged.
So i cleaned up the entire messaging folder under \Windows\
At restarted it and it was fine
So i suggest dont sync up entire e-mail in any form i.e headers only etc.
If this helps do P.M me
I installed a custom rom from dutty, and now it completely dies while in standby, have to remove the battery to boot it up again. Looks like I traded one critical problem for another.

Sound Drop Outs While Tablet is "Off."

Hi Folks:
Is anyone else having this problem?
New Info as of 16 July. Sound Still Skipping
Unfortunately, I'm still having sound file skips when the tablet is off.
I did some more Google research on this, and I found several instances with regard to phones having sound problems with skipping and popping sounds while playing. Nearly all of those seemed to be related to either headphone issues or the Bluetooth xceiver.
I originally though this problem was specific to Overdrive Media console, but it has also turned up in the Music app. I also installed a couple of other music/sound apps to see if it may be app specific, but all of them had the same consistent behavior of the sound file...pausing at random intervals....and then continuing after a few seconds when the screen...was turned off. The skips DO NOT happen when the screen is on.
Going through Erica Rene's thoughts I went into the Running Applications Manager and turned off several services I wasn't using, including Neo Player, 3d Gallery, Skype, and even Music. I initially thought that worked, but I was wrong. Same behavior.
This morning I did a factory reset. No change in behavior.
Since I just started using the tablet for audio books and podcasts I honestly don't know if this problem was there in 3.0. When I did the factory reset I thought the tablet might go back to 3.0, but I was wrong. I am still on build Acer_A500_4.010.08_COM_GEN2 after the factory reset.
There seems to be nothing wrong with my hardware that I can see. These skips happen with the headphones in or out. The only thing that triggers it is turning off the screen.
Insofar as software is concerned, I've not done anything more except rooting the tablet (which survived the factory reset process, which did surprise me! ). Beyond putting in another ROM - which, unless I can get some specific thoughts that it will fix the problem, given my experience level I'm a bit leery of doing - I can't see how software would fix it now.
Is anyone else seeing this???
Thanks!!!!
=============================
I've searched Google and here on XDA for this and not found anything, so I'm hoping that someone can say something.
When I play a sound file on my A500, and then turn it off, the sound continuing to play is a very iffy thing. This works on my Nexus One phone, so I assumed it would work here. On my phone I start a sound file running (music, podcast, audio from an audio book or Google reader) and then I turn the phone "off" to conserve the battery, of course. The sound continues to play.
When I do the same thing on the A500 it is very rare that the sound continues to play. Sometimes it will stop as soon as I turn the tablet off, sometimes it will continue for several seconds and then stop, sometimes it will continue for several seconds and then pause for a couple of seconds and continue in this loop for the life of the file.
I originally thought that this was a specific issue with the audio books in the Overdrive Media Console program, but I've now encountered it with Google Reader and playing things through either Music or Rockplayer Lite.
Has anyone seen this yourself, or does anyone have any thoughts? Details on the tablet are below:
OS: AndroidOS 3.1
Build: Acer_A500_4.010.08_COM_GEN2
Rooted
Could be some of the apps not playing fair.
Do you have a task killer or any add on management app.they can cause this
Also in settings sounds.there is a check button to control this.
Also do not hit the back button on the apt this will kill it
I had Google music going off when I would hot the power buttonbtobturn off display and it was ina task killer ibaccidently installed something I had on USB drive for my cell.it had a setting to close all apps on display off or sleep.
Erica:
Thank you for your reply. Oddly enough, something along those lines may be it.
I've not modified my tablet much beyond rooting it. I've not uninstalled applications and don't have a custom ROM.
You mentioned that something might not be playing fair. I have no add on management application, nor any task killer I'm aware of. The Applications area of Settings has been doing what I need in that department fine for me. So I went in and looked at what services were running, and specifically turned off the services and programs I know I was not using: Skype, NemoPlayer, PhotoBrowser, Acer Sync. I then tried a sound file, turned off the tablet and it did continue to play steadily.
Now I guess I just have to figure out which program is the culprit, but it seems evident that one of them is.
Along those lines, perhaps you can answer something else for me: Those programs I mentioned above basically started running services on bootup. How do I stop that? I don't use NemoPlayer, for example, and so have no reason to have any service from it starting. I took a look at the Settings->Applications area and don't seem to see anything there that indicates what gets started upon bootup.
Thanks!

I use titanium backup. It has a option to not only backup. But can freeze apps.Im not sure but you might need to have root for this feature.there are other apps on market to freeze them maybe someone can help by telling the app they use.just do not remove any apps Acer put on your tab.
You can get root easky look in Dev area
Put some new information in teh original post.
My sound also cuts out when tablet goes to lock mode. I thought it was certain apps. Removed everything as far as widgets anything running in backround on home screen but I still have the same issue its random. Tried a clean wipe/install basic apps root explorer and still had it happen. I thought it might be a audio codec problem. In Honeycomb 3.0 I was able to play AVIs with AC3 in mobo and nemo player now I cant in 3.1.
HC 3.1
Acer 4.010.02 Gen1
i have the probleme too with the sound when it goes to sleep when i stream webradio !
Just a thought, along similar lines when my screen is off sound will cut out after about 15 to 20 mins. I think for you as others have said you have something else that is causing the problem. For me I think it's just a system timer. Don't know how to fix it.
i have experienced a similar thing with some Roms I've tried and with them it was the built in overclocker that was the culprit. I had to change the profile in the overclocker to enable the playback while the screen was off. Same goes for overclocking apps such as setcpu.
I'm experiencing a skip with my email notification. I recorded a short notice (similar to you got mail) & it does a 5 second pause 1/2 way through. Didn't do it prior to 3.1

[Q] Work Phone Part Duex - Ideas?

Following up with my new work S5 (thanks to the guys in my other thread who schooled me on Knox). Bottom line, we moved from Blackberry to the (our) neutered version of the S5. I am trying to replicate some of the simpler functionality of the BB with the new phone. Now, I have a rooted G3 as a personal phone, so I know how Android works pretty much, but the work phone is pretty locked down. We use Knox for work email and stuff, and the Play store is whitelisted to select apps. No free downloading. Here's what I am trying to do...
#1
My BB has a stupidly simple magnet in the case, so when I put the device in the holster, it went to vibrate-only mode. When I took it out, it would go back to the normal sound profile. No fuss, no user intervention needed. So, TecTiles is one of the apps I was able to get installed, and I ordered some. I can program them to set the phone to silent mode, but am I correct that I would still need to trigger the device to come OUT of silent mode? It's not automatic when it loses connection to the tile?
#2 (bigger)
I have the wireless charging back plate, and I have two issues. First, the "DU-DUNK" sound when the device gets fully charged, discharged a little, then starts charging again. I can't install Battery Doctor to silence it, I can't root to silence it. Can I write a tag with enough specificity to allow sounds for text and phone calls (I have an on call job) and keep the rest quiet?
The other nut kicker is the simple act of going in to clock mode (like a nite stand). Samsung removed the clock from Daydream (FFS), and I can't install any from Play (all I have tried are locked out). Any ideas on that one? Silly as it sounds, I used the BB as my alarm clock, especially while traveling. Timley looks GREAT. Can't install it.

Any help from the pros here would be appreciated.

Question...
I didn't read your other thread, but do you have the ability to use outside Media sources? MicroSD or MicroUSB flash drives?
If so, perhaps consider locating .apk's that you want/need for your functions and side load them by running the .apk's from the external drive.
What I use... http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Andro...-fkmr0&keywords=sandisk+flash+drive+dual+mode
And I can't imagine them whitelisting the app to go with it, as it is a storage device, not something malicious.

Thanks for responding. I'm sorry for sounding like a n00b, is this functionally any different from downloading an .apk on the SD card and installing it through a file explorer? As an aside, the way the restrictions work, the apps will install for a brief moment, and then they are uninstalled by the device. Is this method any different?
Thanks

If you can manually put the .apk on the SD card, or microusb capable flash drive, it may work and stick. Not guaranteed as I have not tried on a phone like yours. GL

Yeah no dice, it works more like a removal than a block. It will install any app, then remove it when it checks it against the security policy. It's weird, some apps that seem just as innocuous (and are not on the list) install and work. Who knows. The whole thing feels very...unfinished. Like the whole Android enterprise thing isn't quite all put together yet. But I guess free it free, even if it's nerf'd free.
