what happened to the stereo speakers? - X 2014 General

there was this hype about the 2014 design for moto smartphones x, g and e, and only now I noticed that the 2 grills on the front are NOT stereo speakers. top one only works for phone calls, and bottom one acts as a loud speaker for music, notifications, speaker phone, etc.
who started this thing about stereo speakers anyway? kinda disappointing

Clueless tech bloggers making assumptions rather than waiting for facts.

Yeah a few devs were trying to see if they could activate the top speaker for music but I don't think that it is going anywhere.

Yeah theres a thread for it on here. Needs root.

What I don't understand is that the moto G which is cheaper has stereo speakers but the moto x doesn't

I don't believe moto G has stero speakers either.. does it?

The second generation G does have stereo speakers, but I do believe the single one on the X is better. Obviously the stereo effect is nice but im fine with it.

The Moto X was never claimed to have stereo speakers.

A lot of the reviewers said it was but with a lot of them I have learned to take what they say with a pinch of salt.

I think it have something to the do with the Moto X noise canceling technology and it's 4 microphones.

Why would that prevent them from including stereo speakers?

LG G2 Audio Quality? Hi-Fi Sound?

Hey all, the audio quality from the speakers are supposed to be a selling point of the phone.. not many reviewers speak about it in the video review or even give an example of what it sounds like... so not intuitive and extra frustrating lol. Does anyone have it and can compare it to the HTC one boom sound quality or the Iphone 4s good speaker quality? Now that i have an HTC One, the only way i would go to the LG G2 is if the audio quality from the speakers hold up to the hype LG displayed at their event. replies are appreciated.
Im with you as no review has done anything with the sound. I will say in this phonearena review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVA7jg1KB-k&feature=youtube_gdata_player that he says although the G2 sounds great it doesnt have the depth the htc one has with its boom sound but that still leaves us in the dark.

yeah i watched that yesterday... again left in the dark... i was hoping that it sounded close to the HTC One as it's the best audio i've heard on a phone next to the Iphone 4 and 4s. thanks for the reply!
Are you talking about audio from the external speaker, or audio out to headphones? If external speaker, I'm thinking you'd be disappointed vs. the HTC One, as the G2 only has a single mono speaker on the bottom right as you face the screen. The grill on the bottom left is the microphone.

yeah i was referring to the External speakers and thats a bummer.. i thought they were stereo speakers with two at the bottom... something like the apple has at the bottom of their iphone. I really like the phone from reviews and if the speakers are better than the Note 3 lets say or any other LG smart phone, i may be inclined to get it... seems like no phone is as good as the htc one just yet

I don't know if i'd let the speakers bother you, much. Then again i can't tell you what and what not to do.
A phone will never have audiophile sound from speakers. Sure, we can justify it sounding good because of what it is. I've heard the iphone speakers and i've heard the htc speakers. Yes, for a phone they are great, but that's about it. With that being said, i'd never rock out with phone speakers. They help get the point across, but i'll be reaching for hi-end gear to make those beautiful music notes shine.

right.. but the reason i'm intrigued is because they're supposed to be really good.. LG had a presentation on the speakers. The Htc one sounds very very good.. it could come out of the box louder but there's a way you can make them louder and still sound crisp. It's second to none i've tried so far. going to something lesser than hurts the mind and deprives the ears when you know there's a better option.

The Hi-Fi sound is in regards to being able to play 24 bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback. The only way to take advantage of this is having high enough quality media and using a nice set of headphones. The external speaker has nothing to do with this, and from what I've seen it's not all that great.

99.9% sure, based on a post I read from someone who already has the phone, as well as the phone's manual, which only draws a line to one grill with the "Speaker" label. No manual is perfect, but I'm fairly confident that a split line would have been drawn to each grill if it had stereo external speakers.
Right side is the only speaker. It sounds better than the GS4, but not as good as the HTC One.

The speaker(s) on the lg g2 do sound better than the s3. Can't comment on the s4. The lg g2 is more warm sounding and higher pitched timbre's sound more realistic vs the s3. They are of equal sound volume, however.
It's about as loud as my n4 but actually has more bass, not saying its much, but its more than a n4 or gs3.
i hate the fact that there's a built in compressor/limiter on the speakers, and there's some kind of weird stereo thing going on where it might only be giving ONE channel, rather than both left/right out of the speaker.
i rememebr reading on the international version that there was EQ settings and whatnot somewhere...wonder if we can unlock them somehow? then maybe we can turn that stupid limiter off.
Hey guys...dont know whether this has been asked before but i really dont know if this g2 has 1 or 2 speakers. Cos the sound only comes out of the right speaker. But in the manual looks like it has 2 speakers...can someone help me here? Thanks

[Q] LG G2 Dual Speakers?

Received my G2 yesterday and everything has been great until i played a game and my finger covered the right speaker when in landscape. This blocked all sound and was muffled, when i looked i saw a speaker on the opposite side. is this supposed to be a dual speaker phone or is it like the iphone and one is a microphone? I have found in a couple of reviews that it does have stereo speakers but cant find it anywhere on the LG website
The "speaker" on the left isn't actually a speaker. That's the microphone. It doesn't have stereo bottom speaker.

Little did you know that Apple duped you too. The iPhone only has 1 speaker as well. That 2nd speaker grill on the iPhone and G2 are phony. I just think both LG and Apple did the dual speaker grills for aesthetic looks and not for functionality. I mean it does look a lot nicer to have dual speaker grills than what Verizon did and just have the speaker grill on the one side.
But the noise canceling Mic on the VZN works as intended with one small hole vs a big grill. Lets in to much wind noise

Stereo speakers?

I've seen one blog mention that the moto x play doesn't have dual speakers, but can anyone confirm this?
It seems like a huge oversight and deal breaker to me if it doesn't, seeing as the g and style do.
tbh there probably using the same housing as they did in the droid turbo and therefore only having one speaker would make sense BUT i really hope theres two speakers, not a deal breaker for me but just annoying.
Having one front firing speaker is 1000000000x better than a rear and side firing.
Yeah that would make sense but that's really disappointing if so. One front firing speaker is definitely better but when you turn the phone on it's side its really annoying hearing the sound so loudly from one side.
The already announced at their event that it has stereo speakers on the front.

They announced this for the Style. Correct me if I'm wrong.
It has just one speaker like the 2nd Moto X.
Only the Moto X style has two speakers, both the G and the X play have only one.
Please have a look at this :

If this is achievable on the oneplus-one, why not on our device.. It will have a more natural stereo output than the OPO...

I don't know if anyone watching this thread, but I want to share something with you guys.
I've got my Moto X Play (XT1562; no carrier) a week ago.
I'm listening to the official FM radio app right now, and suddenly realized that the sound is coming from lower half of the phone, which obviously means that this model has two speakers on its front panel.
However, the radio sound isn't coming from the upper speaker at all, so, maybe the upper speaker is for phone call purpose only.
Can anyone confirm it or hack into it?
sorry for my bad English

[A] Moto X Pure vs HTC One M9 - Speaker comparison

Just got my Moto X Pure today and retired my M9.
I know when I was originally looking at the X Pure, the biggest question on my mind was how the speakers compare to the M9? I am relieved to say the Moto speakers sound pretty good!
What's different? The Moto speakers are louder - Quite a bit louder actually, maybe 50%, without any breakup. It doesn't have the same hi-fi quality of sound the M9 has or the noticeably richer low end , but it still sound pretty good. I was also using Poweramp, which has a really good EQ and I have it set to bump up the bass a little and knock down the mids (1k) just a little to kill the "boxy" sound.
Like I said, this was a main concern in getting a different phone and the main reason I've stuck with the HTC One series for so long....They just sound really good. But over-all, I'm REALLY happy with the Moto X Pure and it's sound quality. I think if anyone is unsure about switching from an M9 for this reason, don't let it hold you back.....And honestly, it doesn't feel that much bigger either.
Sound on this thing is awesome... First time I have owned a phone and had to turn the volume down on it wile watching a video. Coming from nexus 5

I never doubt the quality of the moto x style speakers, but great to hear that you are satisfied
Finally will be able to hear my ringtones without it sounding like garbage
How is the placement of the headphone jack, does it prove to be a bother and is it awkward. And how is the sound quality through the headphone jack.
When having a phone conversation over speakerphone, only one speaker is functioning. I still have to turn it down from the max volume. I fiddle with the volume a few times until it is at a comfortable level.

The output from the headphone jack is a little lower than the M9, but the M9 was too loud, when turned up all the way, and would distort the auxiliary port on my car stereo.... The MXP doesn't push it to distort, even full volume.
I haven't tried it through headphones/earbuds yet, just in my auxiliary port in my car stereo......It sounded really good (no better or no worse than my M9). I did mess with the EQ on my music player, but ended up putting it about the exact same way as I had it on my M9. I've included a couple screen shots of my EQ settings, one is PowerAmp, the other is Shuttle+.
I also noticed under Settings>Sound & Notifications...There is a setting called "Audio Effects", which is a built in EQ, I haven't touched that setting yet. This may be normal for ROMs based on GPe (stock Android), but I've not noticed it on the custom ROMs I've ran in the past, unless I used Viper4Android or Dolby.
As for the headphone jack, it's fine where it is. It's not a deal breaker for me, but I do wish it was on the same side as the charging port. With my M9, when in my car I would plug in the charger and headphone jack, flip it upside down and stick it in my cup holder in my car. With it being on top and the charging port on bottom on the MXP, I can't do that.......So I just lay it in the passenger seat.

Glad to hear this. I'm coming from an M8, which isn't quite as good as the M9, but I do appreciate the quality of sound that comes out of the speakers on my M8. If you've owned an M8, how does the sound compare to that? It sounds like it might be on par with the M8, but not quite as good as the M9, would that be accurate?

I personally liked the M8 sound better than the M9, but that's just my opinion (that's a story for another day, I wish I kept my M8 instead of upgrading to the M9)...... But the MXP is still not quite as good, but good enough.
I used a different player (Shuttle+) and messed with the EQ on it and got it sounding REALLY good through the speakers. I think if both the M8/M9 were sitting next to the MXP and I was looking at them, I'd be able to tell the difference. If I closed my eyes and someone held one up playing a song, and asked which one it was..... I'm not sure I could tell the difference?
The HTC One phones have a certain Hi-fi sound through the speakers, the MXP isn't quite there but is really good IMO.
I guess it's a waiting game before we can run Viper4Android on this baby. I know V4A makes a huge difference on my Galaxy S5. I can't wait to try out the front facing speakers. Real Racing 3 is going to sound epic
Coming from an M8 this was really good to read!

(Video) Pixel XL vs Nexus 6p speaker comparison via Blue Yeti

So, I have a Pixel XL, but since the speaker is the same, I would like to share this here as well....
Here is a comparison of the speakers on both devices. I recorded both phones using my Blue Yeti mic to really capture the differences.
I will be doing a few more vids on about my Pixel on my channel, so check if you are interested.

Speaker is one of my concerns
It's cool to have front facing speakers but I think back and wonder just how often I would use them on my Nexus 6. I mean, maybe a few minutes in the evening when I get home from work, but that's about it. At work, I would use the headphone jack, which depends on the DAC within the phone...so the external speakers don't matter at that point.

Pixel speaker is fine. Thanks for doing that video, it was very cool to see. Really, I can't see it as really accurate though. All through your tests the pixel speaker seems to have a better angle to your mic. These little speakers are highly directional. I don't normally watch a video on the phone with the down firing speaker pointed at my ear.
