[Q] - HELP - Creating a hosts file crashes my Note 4 - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have been using my rooted Note 4 SM-N910F for 2 months now (Kitkat v4.4.4 installed + TWRP latest version).
I have rooted it in order, among others, to re-install AdAway because I can't live without it.
About 4 days ago, I had the surprise to see that adds were back in apps.
I fired up AdAway which collected new updates (it was set to automatic checking before) and when trying to install the hosts file, the phone suddenly rebooted.
Now, every time I try to add a hosts file in System/etc, the phone reboots and the file is not created. I have tried creating a "host" file.. it's working and as soon as I try to rename it to "hosts", it crashes and reboot.
Has anyone experienced the same behavior ?
What I can dot to debug this ?
I'm opened to any test you can ask me to do.
Thanks in advance

Sir,

[Q] Wifi Problems [Solved]

Phone: Samsung S4 mini SGH-I257m (Canada Rogers)
Android 4.2.2 I257MVLUAMK5
I used an app called "Wifi Pass Recovery & Backup" and it killed my wifi. It tries to turn on and fails. I could redo my phone completely but I would rather fix it.
I have tried many things:
I made a backup with the app before doing anything and restoring that did nothing. Using the in app "reset wifi settings" button also did nothing but remove my saved networks.
Using ES File Explorer I have looked at the /system/bin/wps_supplicant, /data/misc/wifi/wps_supplicant.conf, /system/etc/wifi/wps_supplicant.conf. Played around with permissions, owner and checked MD5 with backed up versions. One thing I noticed was that the permissions seemed to reset when I would reboot.....
I used logcat and couldn't gain any ground there.
Some post I saw said something about replacing /system/bin/wps_supplicant with the one from the stock firmware, but i couldn't figure out how to find the files in the firmware I downloaded. I did find a factory image from google and was able to extract the files I was looking for, but they didn't work either. No surprise there.
I would love some help this as you guys are the experts!
Thanks!
Are there any other files that have to do with wifi? They might be worth checking out.
Solved
Ok....So, I was able to fix the problem by going back to the stock ROM. Not what I was wanting but whatever.
In an effort to try to figure out what happened, I cross-checked the stock files with the the ones I had before.
- the MD5 checksum of /system/bin/wpa_supplicant was identical
- /system/etc/wifi/wps_supplicant.conf was identical
- /data/misc/wifi/wps_supplicant.conf had a difference with config_methods. Stock was 'physical_display', old was 'physical_display virtual_push_button keypad'
So as far as I can tell.....that one entry was the problem.

[Q] [NeXus 4] - Can't Install Certificates on 4.2.2

Hi to everyone,
I don't post often but I follow all the threads over here and generally they fulfill all my needs.
Anyway this time I need your direct help:
few weeks ago I flashed this rom odexed version. No issue to notice but today I was trying to install a 802.x certificate (.p12 the extension) that I have been able to install in the previous 4.3 Android.
I get the
No application to open this file

error.
How can I solve this? Someone out there already faced this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Usually to install certificate you have to put it on the root of your SD card (I'm not sure what extensions are supported), and go to Settings, then Security, then Install from Storage on the bottom of the list.

[Q] Trouble Replacing System Pen Sounds

Hello. Long time lurker, first time poster - this is the first time I haven't been able to find my answer through the forums. I hope to be able to contribute over time to the amazing community here!
I have seen a lot of first time posters get flamed over not using the search function. I assure you, I attempted to. I used google, and the search functions here, and went over every "similar threads" suggestion. So please, no flaming about that. If I missed an obvious place where this question was asked before, please give me a link so I can learn to create my search keywords better. Thank you!
I just put Bean's KitKat on my Note 3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726558). Everything went perfectly, and I couldn't be happier. Well...almost.
I know its corny, but I wanted the Jedi Master sounds for when I unsheath/resheath my S-Pen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34702652 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2027296).
I followed the instructions carefully. I put the new sounds on my SDCard, navigated to the correct folder using ES File Manager Root Explorer, and pasted the new sound files. I chose "overwrite" when asked by ES about copying a file with an identical name.
I restarted the phone, but the Pen Sound 1 was the "Verizon Airwaves" default ringtone! It shocked me.
I repeated the procedure, ensuring that I had the correct files. I also verified that the sound files were correct - I played them with the ES Media Player, and the sound files in the system folder are the Jedi Sounds.
Restarted the phone again, and still "Verizon Airwaves".
I searched around, and extrapolated from some other problems that sometimes clearing the dvalik and regular cache can help with the system absorbing new changes and whatnot, so I tried that.
Still "Verizon Airwaves."
Can someone please help me out? I feel like I made an obvious error, but I just can't see it. I didn't want to do a factory reset just to make the same mistake again.
It seems a little bit like a bad twist in a cheap horror movie to have the ubiquitous default Verizon ringtone be what comes up instead of my Jedi Sounds.
Phone Details:

Hardware Mods: None
Any other info I should include about my phone in future posts?
I used the program Root Explorer to paste the files into /system/media/audio/ui
After they are pasted I changed the permissions to rw- r– r–
Reboot and its working here.. I used this link
http://www.droiddog.com/android-blo...-on-s-pen-attachdetach-on-the-galaxy-note-ii/
It was the permissions! I totally forgot to reset the permissions. Thank you so much!!
Now on to more awesomeness.

Need Christmas Miracle, Trying to Root Encrypted Note 3.0 to Recover Deleted Files

Hello,
Last week 16 Gb of photos and videos (the last 3 years of my life) suddenly disappeared with only the last 6 pics I took in the gallery app. Stupidly I did not back anything up. I realize that the data is still probably on the phone, however to get to this I need to root the phone. The phone is running 5.0 Lollipop and is encrypted because I had to instal mobile iron. for my job. I have tried Kingroot, Kingoroot and several other methods but keep failing. I have not decrypted the phone as I believe this will make the data inaccessible unless there is some way I can get the encryption key off the phone. Any advise of method to use to root or how to extract these files given the current state of the phone would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Sean

Post a screenshot of file systems,DCIM especially and if using microsd to see where data went.Possibly root is not needed.
Where did the files went?
In case of root i suggest using ODIN software and flashing twrp.tar file. (just in case u havent tried that already).

I am not using a microSD
From what I have read the disappearing of photos and videos randomly occurs to some people on the Note 3 and the file data if not overwritten is still present. XDA wont post let me a post a link but there are several threads elsewhere on this issue.
XDA also wont let me attach photos until I have 10 posts. Ill see if I can bump this to do so.
Please don't bump multiple times. Bump once in 24hrs.
Have patience. XDA is a global forum so every member is with various time zones.

You must Odin back to 4.4.4 to root.
I would make sure those photos weren't backed up after all. If you just use google+ for example they are backed up by default.

Write Errors in /storage/emulated/0/Android after system upgrade

Hello World,
I recently upgraded my Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 (P900) from CM (Android 5.x) to LineageOS (Android 7.1.2).
The upgrade itself seemed to run fine, but now I get strange write errors with Apps that write into /storage/emulated/0/Android.
I verified that all files and dirs under /data/media/0 have the correct permissions and that they belong to media_rw:media_rw. Yet under /storage/emulated/0/Android there are some files and directories that have plain wrong ownership (root) and even some of those apps whose Android dirs seem to have the correct ownership produce write access errors (despite the owner having write permissions).
I am at my wits end here, since I do not know where the fuse mounted /storage/emulated/0/Android dir gets its permission settings and ownership from - and on top of that the offending dirs don't even show any settings that should prevent them from writing in there.
Similar issue here
Hey, did u ever figure this issue out? I'm having a similar issue on my Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. I'm running lineage 14.1, flashed a few things (gapps, SuperSU update, & bootanimation). I tried clearing and reflashing those with known working versions and even doing a clean install of the whole ROM. No luck tho. Please let me know if you have a solution. Thank you.
