Enable softkeys - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hallo,
I really want to enable the softkeys since my hardware buttons aren't working anymore. Does anyone know how to enable them? I found some tutorials about adding a line in your build.prop but none of them worked. I run Android 5 on my I9506.
Thanks in advance

You mean those on-screen buttons?
I think you'll have to find a custom rom which has the feature.
Or find an app to do it. There was something called Pie Control on the google play which gave you some on-screen buttons when swiping from one of the screen edges.

[Q] Help with fixed buttons...

OK, the fixed buttons to the right of the screen. 2 things. is there a way to put them on the title bar like on other android tabs? I figure it must just be something I'm missing but I'm not sure. there must be some way. without them being backlit if it's dark I can't seem them obviously. TIA.
Look for Button Savior in the android market, it can be placed anywhere on any edge of the screen
Hey, thanks. not bad but not exactly what I was looking for. I have an older generic crap-tab running 2.2, it has only one hard button and all the buttons are on the status bar at the top let of the screen. I really like that and was hoping to be able to do it here. maybe it's not possible but I can't see why. it's a good place for a few buttons, they are out of the way and such. I am wondering also if there is a way to disable the hard buttons on the A7 because somtimes I accidently activate them "sliding" a bit off the screen.
What you are describing is just a status bar modification. It is unique to that particular device, because it involves heavy modification of the Google framework library.

[Q] Nexus 4 Virtual Buttons

First I tried to find some thing like this but I didn't manage to find any posts similar .. the only thing I found is to make your nexus 4 Full Screen.
# What I need is disable virtual buttons ONLY from Home Screen as it have no point in my viewpoint .. make Lock Screen full screen with no black blank space .. and keep the virtual button everywhere else*

# Is it possible to make virtual button background transparent as in Motorola*

* sorry that I can't post image due to xda restrictions for new users under 10 posts :/
As of now, I don't think it is possible. I would just wait for ROMs to start coming out and hopefully one of the devs will be able to implement such a feature.
full screen toggle apk + LMT 1.5 seems to be working for me.. you have to be rooted to utilize these features

lol I agree
Neither of those apps are working for my phone, at least not gestures. When I hit disable navbar, nothing happens, though it did request root.
What input did you select in LMT?
Edit: Never used these apps before, but I'm assuming the nav removal works as I didn't try rebooting. I did reboot after setting up LMT though, and it still never worked.
I use lmt and full screen and its fine.... but can anyone solve this? its really strange.. touch is fine... but once you put navigations buttons back... they simple dont work.. anyone have a final solution? thanks.

Need help w/ SystemUI/framework to enable NavBar/soft keys...

I have only tested on the Sprint N3 so far, I will test on the T-Mo version later.
In the past, Note 2, S4, etc., I was able to enable the ICS-style soft key by using the qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 trick. When I apply that on the N3, the System UI crashes constantly.
Is there a way around this? Is this a situation where the System UI is missing the icons or something else? I would very much like to have the soft keys back...
Thanks.
Edit: It has become clear that I will need to edit SystemUI to add the missing parts to get this to work. Please see post 5 below.

I am curious as to why you would want the soft keys back when the hardware buttons work with the s-pen and you should be able to reprogram the function of the hardware button if you have root.

Preference. The hardware Home key is mechanical and the "feel" is different. I like having the consistent touch experience of the on-screen soft keys. I especially miss the ICS customizable soft keys where I was able to customize the location and menu, but that is another story.
In my N2s, I turn off the backlight to the hardware keys and used the on screen soft keys. Worked well for me.
Oh yea, the soft key/NavBar also provides a dedicated button for switching between apps that the hardware doesn't.
I found that the S4 needed its SystemUI edited to enable the NavBar. At the very least, the images are missing. I believe the same goes for the N3. See this post:
[GUIDE][MOD] Enable navigation bar 4.2.2
I can use some help on porting the edits to N3. Anyone?
I've been looking for a solution for a long time now and now finally, I found it!
Thanks! Let me know how it works out for you
Did anyone get this working?
Could someone provide the SystemUI.apk?
Shameless bump. I've read the guides but it's all a little over my head. I really want soft keys, its the last piece of the puzzle to get the phone that way I want it to be. Anyone willing to help out?

Same here, I really would like soft keys if anyone would be willing to work on it

[Q] Soft keys moved to top?

Hey everyone. I cracked my precious N4's screen recently right on the bottom, which made just the navigation keys unresponsive. I was wondering if there was an app/mod to have the soft keys moved to the top, or side. I tried searching the forums for a solution but couldn't find anything that would work.
And before anyone says Floating soft keys or any app like that, that's not what I'm looking for. I currently have floating soft keys which works okay, but sometimes the bar disappears, making me reboot. I do not want a 3rd party app from the play store which may malfunction or disable itself somehow. I want a custom rom/root mod that would re-position them entirely. I'm planning on selling the phone to my friend so I want the functionality to be 100%.
Any ideas?
Thanks
PAC Rom has Pie Float controls
Some apps allow you to rotate the UI by 180 Degree you may try any of them.
I use Ultimate Rotation Control, but its my own preference.

Xposed is a framework that enables you to mod the system without manual hacks by installing .zip files for various functions. One of the more popular would be Sense Toolbox for HTC ROMs, or Xprivacy to give granular control over permissions and help prevent sensitive data from leaking. Search on the forum here and find the Xposed section. You'll find it informative.

Alright, thanks
sended from iPhone 9
Im running zulu's full android with xposed
One of the things im assuming only xposed easilly allows, is map various controller hardware keys, like wireless/wired mouse/keyboard/gamepads (note, ive only tested a wireless mouse wich has a few extra buttons, like backwards/forwards, but im pretty sure the others i listed should work) edit:mouse, cant remap left/right click, just one or two of the extra buttons my mouse happens to have
The modules called xposed additions, ive done some simple things for now, like mapping the backwards button on the mouse to, "press the home button", to take me directly to home screen, i click on the backward button once and it works as default by "pressing" the back, but with this module, you can remap different commands with long presses..........so click and let go = back button .....long click = home button......very nice...
If your a tasker user, you can remap hardware buttons to launch tasker shortcuts too......even nicer......many possibilities........iniating tasker tasks with remapped connected controller......directly.........i can imagine really cool stuff folks might be able to do with this, like home automated houses..............ive tested this really compact bluetooth media controller i have, which has buttons one to ten, quickly tested that i can map tasker shortcuts to each button..........possibillities maaaaaan
Only found this neat app because i had a need for it when setting up my shield
