Nexus 6 Verizon User's thread - Nexus 6 General

I am early but thought I would start this now.
Please feel free to discuss any Verizon related topics regarding the Nexus 6.

Been working well for me for over a month. No complaints except I would like volte. Otherwise, very happy with my decision.

Not really sure we need yet another Verizon thread but ok

I might as well summarize my experience with Verizon and the Nexus 6 thus far, since it's probably typical in many respects:
Getting a nano SIM for a phone that Verizon doesn't yet recognize:
Purchased a new, carrier-unaligned Nexus 6 that came from the Motorola website (64GB Midnight Blue), which obviously comes with no (nano) SIM card
My old Verizon phone, a Samsung Galaxy S III, used a Verizon micro SIM card
Experimenting with cutting a (different) micro SIM card down to nano SIM led to disaster for the card, though I did try to be careful. Decided that the manual cutting path wasn't for me. Maybe one of those punch-out cutters are more foolproof
Obtained a free nano SIM card from Verizon after calling Technical Support and telling them I got a Motorola that will require nano SIM format, for my existing line. They sent it via two-day FedEx.
Trying to activate a new Verizon Wireless nano SIM:
Learned that you cannot place a nano SIM card into a non-nano SIM phone and activate that SIM with Verizon - their online and phone-based activation methods both use the same check to determine if a SIM card is physically the same size as required by the phone. So, even using a nano-to-micro SIM adapted in a micro SIM phone won't fly for first-time activation of a nano SIM
A Technical Representative on the phone told me that one of her co-workers was testing out the Nexus 6 internally (as part of their job) and they really liked the phone, it was working well with their systems, etc. But, you couldn't register the phone with a consumer account, yet. I was also told that unaffiliated Nexus 6 phones (such as mine) should be formally accepted and recognized by Verizon after they open their systems to registration for that model.
I was able to obtain a used Moto X (2013) and activate my new nano SIM on my Unlimited Data Plan phone line using the Verizon Wireless website. I waited until the My Verizon website showed that I had a Moto X on the line, just to ensure everything was cool
Activating the Motorola-bought Nexus 6 on Verizon's network:
Placed the newly activated nano SIM into my Nexus 6 and went through phone activation on Verizon's network for the first time. It was showing a progress indicator for about two minutes . . . then, it moved to the next step of setting up phone configuration, Google ID, etc.
The My Verizon site now shows my line as having an unknown phone with the Verizon SIM, and an additional warning states this condition in more explicit - but non-threatening - terms.
I've been able to use phone and 4G data features on Verizon's network without problems on the Nexus 6 since activating with the nano SIM.
After Verizon officially recognize Nexus 6 phones in its system, I'll check back and ensure that my phone is propely recognized by them, in case network issues crop up and I need formal support in that regard. Obviously, I am not asking them for phone support, as I'll get that through my Motorola warranty.
So, I'd imagine the steps above for registering a Nexus 6 with Verizon will become
Bring your Nexus 6 to Verizon (i.e., they ask for the IMEI)
Ask for a new (free) nano SIM if you don't already have one
Place the new nano SIM in your Nexus 6 and activate both with Verizon either online or via Phone/in-Person Representative
after they formally recognize the phone .
I don't know if they'll give former AT&T or other carrier Nexus 6 owners a hassle in using their phones on the Verizon network due to IMEI, though.

Interesting story. I plan to buy the phone at a VZW store so there should, in principle, be no problems having the network recognize it.

Yeah, from all they've told me, it should happen like any other subsidized phone.
I decided to document the stuff above for future reference, assuming that the whole "providers must unlock fully paid for phones after end of contract, etc." kicks in and might apply to either phones they don't yet accept in their particular network or for which they make you go through hoops to get a new SIM - that is, some elements of this might apply to future situations. I'm still wondering if they'll formally recognize my non-Verizon-bought Nexus 6 some day, as well (as they claim will happen).

How many others are using their phones on Verizon and what did they use to unlock and root the phones?

Fastboot and SuperSU, just read the sticky, its very straight forward.

I had no problem activating a nano sim in a non-nano phone. I put a nano sim in a micro adapter, and inserted into my Droid 4. Called Verizon, said I needed to activate a new sim, and it went without a hitch. Removed it from the phone and adapter, put it in my Nexus 6. and has worked like a charm ever since. 5 minutes start to finish.

Did they ask you for the phone IMEI? I couldn't get around that in the store, on the phone or via the website.

Nope. It was already the phone (Droid 4) that was currently in my account as my active phone. It was already my active IMEI. I simply said I was activating a new sim card in it. All they wanted was the serial number of the SIM. I even got the SIM off ebay (new) and not from verizon. It was activated no questions asked. This was discussed in another thread and I mentioned this there, and several replies came back that they did the same thing. You can definitely activate a nano card in a micro device. Maybe it just takes the right rep.

Maybe so - if you try to do it online, it will definitely perform the check, so perhaps some Reps manage to get around that step (unlike the two that I tried).

I was going to try Wug's nexus tool kit to unlock and root. In principle it should work.

His support is insane, there's teams of devs building less stable roms that don't help their users at all. It's impressive.

I had no problem activating my nano in a non nano phone. I also activated it through VZW website through the account page. I called in and said I needed a nano SIM for a moto x that I would be receiving and never bought one and just activated it on my current non nano phone with adapter.

Once I get TWRP installed and working correctly I am likely to go back to being a flashaholic. I would expect to be running a ROM of my own in the future. I will keep chroma in mind along with CleanROM.

Yeah, that's weird. Given other positive results, I tried that action last week in 3 different ways (i.e., over the phone with two different Reps, in a store and online) - I actually tried using 2 different phones (i.e., a different one that was previously under our account, in addition to my Galaxy S III) online - and the system specifically kicked me out due to SIM size incompatibility, which was the exact same symptom that the two phone Reps said they couldn't get around, in my case. Even when I mentioned using a SIM holder that made it compatible with the phone, the live Reps wouldn't give me a break.
I wonder if my phone+SIM combinations were simply triggering events in their system vs other combination, or if they became more strict since a certain point in time.
I'm satisfied to have it working now, albeit after having to use a nano SIM compatible phone, and seeing a message in my account that Verizon doesn't recognize my Nexus 6. Just a minor "screw them" for the moderate hassle I went through.
- ooofest

When I received my nexus, I went to my local Verizon store and asked them for a nano sim. They happily went back and got one for me free of charge. They tried to activate it for me but were unable to since the phone was not recognized. They told me to call Verizon and activate it over the phone. Instead of calling, I did a live chat through the website and asked the agent to activate the sim for me. They did and took all of 5 minutes to complete.

Took a phone call...
Just like SFG, I was told buy a sales rep to call customer support. One of the host ladies (not a sales rep) in the store told me wouldnt work regardless since it wasn't a Verizon-branded phone. Well had to get ahold of tech support, and they did in about 10 minuets. The Verizon reps at my store know nothing, so I wasn't surprised they gave me a hard time.

AT&T specific question

I have been with sprint for a long time and never had to mess with sim cards. I am now with att and I have a question about sim cards and activations. I have an android phone right now with att that I am going to replace with the note 2. Can I just pull the sim card from the current phone and put it in the new one? Or do I have to take it into the att store? Also does this cause an activation fee?
Moved to Networking section.
You can just switch the SIM. If it's an already activated SIM (meaning it had service in the prior phone) there should not be an activation fee.

Thanks for the info. That is what I was thinking but I wasn't sure.
Yes, one of the great things about gsm/sim cards. Easy swappable. If your current phone uses standard mini sim, you will need to cut it down to work in the note2/other newer phones that use micro sim cards.
Currently using the original note. So I don't know what kind of sim it has.

You Will need to go to the store. Note 1 has A regular sized sim and the Note 2 takes a Micro Sim you will need a smaller sim but sims are free.

Your can use a SIM cutter. No need to go-to a store. Just be careful and follow the instructions. I've used it twice on various phones.

Just insert that to any unlocked phone you want,
Our policy at at&t is if its a gsm it's possible,
No fees for device transfer since we have a SIM number as a basis of the account not the IMEI or ESN
this post is approved by the national potato safety regulation
I have changed phones before and just changed the sim from one phone to the next. I also went to att when another phone took am smaller sim and the att rep got a smaller sim and updated it and handed it to me and said have a nice day. I love att's customer service.

[Q] Transferring my T-Mobile Monthly 4G Plan from GNex to Nexus 4 - Need Advice

I currently own the Galaxy Nexus and I use the $30/month T-Mobile Monthly4G plan with the regular SIM card that I purchased from them about 6 months ago.
Now, I am looking to purchase the LG Nexus 4 unlocked from the Google Play store, and I would like to be able to transfer my current T-Mobile plan from my GNex to my Nexus 4 as easily and effortlessly as possible. I have heard that the Nexus 4 uses microSIM cards instead of the regular SIM card which fit into the GNex. Is this true? If so, where can I purchase a microSIM online from T-Mobile? I've searched their site, but they won't let me buy a microSIM card unless I sign-up for a plan, but I'm already on a Monthly4G plan with them -- I just need a new microSIM for my new phone.
Also, how will the transfer of service work (from people who have had experience with this type of thing or with T-Mobile Monthly4G before)? Will I have to place the new microSIM card into my Nexus 4, then call up the notoriously lackluster T-Mobile support center and put in a request for them to transfer my service plan from my old SIM card to my new microSIM? Also, will they need the IMEI device ID of my Nexus 4 in order to transfer my service, or will they just be able to transfer it to the new microSIM card without that information?
I apologize for all of my questions thrown out there in a bit of a rush, but I'd just like to know how to easily make the transfer from my GNex to a new Nexus 4 while keeping my current $30/month Monthly4G plan with T-Mobile and having as little trouble as possible (and hopefully not having to go without phone service for too long during the transfer).
Thank you so much in advance to anyone who can lend some insight here and respond to my questions. Have a great day and I look forward to the release of the Nexus 4 later today!
Cut down your regular SIM to Micro-SIM size...
Well, alright, but even if I were to do that, does T-Mobile designate a particular phone IMEI or serial number to each plan that you activate with them? So, for example, if I were to somehow successfully trim my SIM card to fit into my Nexus 4, would my Nexus 4 have all of the regular T-Mobile call and data services available on it from my Monthly4G plan, even though I switched it from the device with which it was originally registered to a completely new device? I seem to recall entering an IMEI number or some sort of serial number when I first registered my SIM with T-Mobile's Monthly4G plan, though I could be wrong. I'm just checking to make sure.
Also, with regard to cutting the SIM to fit in the microSIM slot -- can I just cut it with a pair of scissors or an X-acto knife blade and fit it in, and then without any sort of adapter of any kind, it will just work as though I had placed a microSIM in there? I've heard conflicting reports on other forums that, even if you cut it, you'd still need some sort of miniSIM to microSIM adapter, or something to that effect, so correct me if I'm wrong here.
Thanks!
You don't understand how SIM cards work. It will work. Just cut it down and put it in. Done.
You can print out a template online, print it out and cut it using that, no adapter needed.

nexus 7 unlock version for future verizon use

hi, i want to purchase the nexus 7 lte but it's important that i be able to use it with my existing verizon data plan (eventually). i've read the threads and understand they will be certifying it (eventually). i don't want to wait to purchase it so i want to make sure i'm buying the correct model (for verizon activation later). i noticed there are 3 versions being sold at google playstore: 1) with AT&T sim, 2) with T-Mobile sim 3) Unlocked. would the unlock version be the correct device to get or will they be coming out with another model, once verizon completes their testing and certifies it? thanks for any advice.

I purchased the Google Nexus 7 LTE (2013) which came with the T-Mobile SIM.
I took my microSIM card out of my Samsung Galaxy S4 (verizon) and put it into my Google Nexus 7 LTE (2013) and verizon LTE data worked fine. I forwarded my Verizon phone number to my Google Voice number, and used the N7LTE as my phone for a week. However, I found that GrooveIP and Talkatone apps would sometimes miss incoming google voice calls even when I was using WiFi for data. So, I moved my verizon microSIM card back to my phone.
It is my understanding that all three models of N7LTE offerred by Google are the exact same tablet. The only difference is which promotional microSIM card is included in the box.
Good Luck,
Howard
P.S. I do not know if Verizon can see that I am using the phone microSIM card in the N7LTE tablet. If Verizon can see this, then it is possible Verizon can take actions like dropping data service or cancelling my account or whatever else one can imagine. I do not know if Verizon can see which device the microSIM card is installed in. I also don't know if Verizon cares or not.

I made that post for new buyers like you. All 3 versions work on all 3 carriers. Buy the t-mobile one since theyre the same price and keep the sim with free 2gb data for a rainy day. You can use your existing sim (microsim) in your new tablet until it is certified, which, knowing verizon, could be a long wait. Just know that if you have a nanosim or a traditional sim card then you will need a cheap adapter.

Best Verizon Activation Method

So with my pure on the way I am starting to think about how I am going to deal with Verizon activating my phone. Currently I am on an OG Droid that as many of you know has no sim card at all, let alone a 4g sim. From what I can see I have two options:
1) Go into verizon with my new phone and say I want it activated and have them do whatever they do.
2) Order a sim from verizon for a new phone.
-- Now I understand that I can not order a sim without an IMEI number. Does this number need to be to a white listed phone and or the actual IMEI of the phone I will activate with or can I just give them any old valid IMEI number?-- If I need to give them a valid IMEI number for a Verizon phone can I just submit my sisters IMEI number? Also if I was to use my sisters phone to activate the sim would it mess anything up on her phone?
So which option do you think is best and if option 2 please address the additional questions related to it.
Same question. Except new contract.

Tell them you are getting a Nexus 6 or any other phone in their system that uses a nano sim. Tell them it will be a few weeks. I have heard that they will activate a nano sim for you. Pop it in your Pure and you should be good to go. I am lucky enough to have a nano sim in my Turbo I plan on using in my Pure.

Using another devices imei will work. May be a VZW capable device that also takes a nanosim. This is how I got my device activated.
for reference my sister has a turbo which I believe takes a nano
I just took in a different phone without the sim card, which I used for my moto X . They gave me a new sim for the original phone, then I called *611 to activate it. Worked well but the representative keep saying it is a non VZW device and Verizon only allows approved phones on its network. She was nice just sounded confused by this and only mentioned after it was activated.

For now I just took the sim out of my Nexus 6 and popped it in the pure, my main issue with that is now i want to sell my Nexus 6 and i think im not going to be able too
This whole thing is a cluster F, mainly cause Verizon sucks at change and allowing stuff in there network. Im sure they are not the only carrier thats a pain but by far the worse. I would assume this why we don't see every phone come out like this one at least yet
https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/47/27.16
Legally they cannot deny us from adding the MXPE on Verizon.
Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk
Ture but that can make it next to impossible to get it activated the proper way, that seems the be what they are doing
VZW is a pain. My device shows on account page as non Verizon device.
call verizon and tell them you are getting a used HTC one M8
they will mail you a nano sim in 2 days
take current sim out of old active phone
carefully position the nano sim in the slot of old phone. I used a note 4 that takes a micro sim but i was able to position the nano sim correctly in the slot for it to work
reboot phone and cal *611 to activate new sim in old phone
once new sim is active, put it in moto x
you can sell old phone without any issues. account is tied to sim not phone

correct. The SIM will update the new IMEI number to your account, hence why the device shows as unknown in my verizon. If the old IMEI was tied to the card, you would see a nexus 6 as your device when your Moto x was active, which is not the case.
According to Droid Life's follow up with Verizon they plan on having all the kinks worked out by Friday.

That article sounds promising
I went in to a non-retail store, but an authorized retailer and got a SIM card from them...I got home and called the *611 number and activated it, they didn't even ask the type of phone...

Is this a new account, or you're already a Verizon customer? What specifically did you ask for at the store?

I was an existing customer...I just went in to the store and said I needed a new SIM cause I got a new phone with nano SIM and I was currently using a micro; he looked up my name and number to verify the account and I took the card and left...The non retail stores used to charge, but I guess they don't anymore...I may have gotten lucky and the employee was an idiot, I dunno...Went home, called *611, told them I needed to activate the new card and she activated it under my number and I turned it off and then back on and it was good to go! I did call from the new phone too...

Apparently, at Verizon, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. But what else is new?

SIM on Verizon

I have a Galaxy S5 currently and will be receiving my Nexus 6P very soon and would like some clarification in regards to the SIM on Verizon's network.
Since the S5 uses a micro-SIM, besides getting a nano-SIM from Verizon, what else do I need to do? A local rep asked if if it's an NFC SIM or not. I told him, "I don't know" and he said to just bring the phone whenever I have it to figure it out. What do I need to do to activate the SIM?
just use a sim cutter and cut your micro to a nano.

I just had a similar experience. Although with 2 different devices, your results should be the same...
I had an LG G2 with a micro-SIM, going to the Moto X Pure needing a nano-SIM. Best Buy (where I bought it) wanted $30 to set the Moto up, and a franchise VZW store wanted $25. So I went into a VZW corporate store and they installed a nano-SIM for free. Couldn't have been nicer about it as well.
The Moto is carrier unlocked but it posed no problem for the corp. VZW rep to activate, and it only took about 5 minutes. I'm anxiously awaiting delivery of my Nexus 6P - 64gb, and I expect I'll have the same experience then as well..
You don't need an NFC SIM. The NFC SIM cards were for ISIS/Softcard NFC payments. Android Pay doesn't need an NFC SIM card. Of course, your phone will also work fine with an NFC SIM card.
re
no need for a sim cutter.
Just watch a few of the how to videos on youtube and freehand cut yours.
Took me 2 min and some fine trimming..
Its easier then you think.

I'll sell you my sim cutter. paid $7 for it. You can have it for $3. Worked perfectly. Easy as using a hole puncher. Cut it down, popped it in and no dealing with VZW. With UDP....I won't risk letting any of those store morons touch my account for anything.

there is already a thread covering this topic but I would avoid going to a VZW store if possible. you'll just be wasting an hour of your life and they'll likely try to sell you a $20 SIM you should be getting for free.
figure out how to cut it yourself or buy a cutter.
See my post here.
