Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop 5.0.1 Release (Official) - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

Samsung has released Android Lollipop 5.0.1 today, first in Poland (SM-910C). Samsung seems to be using Poland as a test ground, hoping users will bring up bugs and battery life problems so Samsung may release a fixed and near perfect software to the widespread community. Now, it's a waiting game until it reaches OTA for Verizon Customers. Reaching root may be difficult on Lollipop 5.0.1, even impossible as far as we know. Besides the fact and enjoyment of root, stock TouchWiz incorporated into Lollipop on the Note 4 will be by far the best OS of and across all Android devices.

Near perfect? You sound very optimistic. Best os across all android platforms? You sound very very optimistic. But I do hope you are right.

I have been surprised on how much I have not missed Root. I just came from the S4 MDK and had CM12 on it. Really do miss Lollipop, but I really do love this phone. Sad to say though, with Verizon it maybe 6 months before we see Lollipop.

I think we'll get Lollipop before mid-March. VZW got it out very quickly for the S5 so I believe that they are working on it now.

What a tease. I thought it came out was all excited. LET DOWN

What a terrible thread title, you made it sound like there was a release posted here. In any case there's already a lollipop waiting thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/lolipop-jan-15-t2989509

Samsung has HQ in there important one. I just found out yesterday I been living in Polans half of my life and never knew !

If Samsung did get lollipop on the retail N4 soon and it was rootable I would actually use my upgrade and get the N4. Currently still using a rooted N3 and honestly very happy with it, but the temptation for a rooted N4 with lollipop would probably be too much.

I moved to the N4 from the S4 MDK with CM12 also. I thought Id miss root a LOT more than I do. Really the ONLY things Im missing though are viper4android audio, and full mSD read/write access. Cant wait to see Lollipop on my Note4. And hopefully that root.

I use SoundFX as my sound FX and equalizer for apps which support it. Try it out

I just hope they have de-touchwizzed it a bit so we can enjoy all the bliss of Lollipop. If nothing else add a AOSP theme in the settings. Give us the option. I think Samy would sale a lot more phones if they gave the users a theme option. I don't see it happening though.

I read on the S5 forum that viper no longer works with 5.0 lollipop due to the linux kernel being enforcing along with some other policies. Plus development for viper has stopped.

[Q] KitKat?

I got my VN3 a month or so back and decided to wait on rooting until KitKat was released, allegedly in march. I got tired of waiting and went ahead and rooted, using Kingo 1.1.5.xx (MJE).
I imagine that KitKat is still forthcoming for this phone(?). I've installed a few root apps (Titanium, Mobile Odin, etc.).
Questions:
1. If and when KK is available for the VN3, will I need to unroot the phone?
2. What method should I use...Kingo, Odin?
3. Should I take it easy on how many root apps I install until I know if I'll need to unroot?
4. Will it be worthwhile (or even viable) to install KK, or will most rooted users stay with 4.3?
Thanks,
Sam
i wouldn't worry about that. Our Note 3s will be old news by the time verizon gets around to kitkat. They are bust pushing the new Galaxy S5 right now. But don't despair...Kitkat isn't an exciting leap into the future. I had an AOSP (or AOKP?) on my LG G2, and in the state it was in, I ended up going back to, and being deliriously happy, with 4.3. After running 4.4 with all its issues, when I went back to 4.3 there wasn't a single 4.4 feature I missed.

Sorry I somehow missed this. I have to agree. I actually kept GB 2.3 (build EL26 & 29) on my S2. Bumping it up a time or two for various updates, but always Odin'ed back to EL.
The fact that Vzw was alleged to release it in March prompted me to wait and see if I wanted it. But I'm rooted now and will be fine where I'm at. Absolutely fine, in fact.
One irritation with my S2, however, was that I kept having to deal with the update nag.

Unless your like a lot of people with multiple modern samsung devices that enjoy not having many cool features until kit kat. My Verizon N3 can't get kit kat soon enough. My gear fit and tab pro are being held back on functionalities waiting for my Note!

Having had a Moto X that was destroyed by 4.4 (I left it for the Note 3 before it took Verizon years to get it 4.4.2) and a Nexus 7 that got 4.4, and quickly 4.4.2 after that ----- I can live with 4.3. I agree with the comments that there really isn't anything must have about 4.4. On my Moto X - 4.4 destroyed battery life. My Nexus 7 2013 got much better battery life with 4.3 than it gets with 4.4.2 with greenify.
And yes, I got all caught up in the 4.4 KitKat hype, bought the bars, and believed every word of the "redesigned, less footprint, more battery life" hype that never came true. lol.
Edit: To answer OP's question: The only way I'm considering 4.4 on my Note 3 is if one of the Rom devs here offer it - more specifically CleanRom. Otherwise, happily running 4.3 till I can afford the Note 4. lol.
i didnt care at all UNTIL i got a Tab Pro and Gear Fit that were designed to work with Kit Kat. i have ran into many things that requires Kit Kat on my N3 like the latest S Health for Fit to work fully or Sync 3.0 for sharing files from N3. there were a few more as well.
so to call it useless depends on what you may need it for as i could really use it now.
As Fletch33 states, some people have a need for KitKat. As for me, having stayed with GB for so long, JB 4.3 is quite the upgrade (as is the N3). JB on my S2 just didn't cut it. I can live without KK as long as I have to, but really, it's all academic at this point, since Verizon has passed their timeline of 'sometime in March'. And from what I'm hearing, it may take quite some time to see it happen.
That being the case (and with the seemingly prevailing opinion re:KitKat), I'll just go ahead and setup my now rooted VN3 as I need it to be and reject the KK update offers.
I havent seen a vzw note 3 kitkat yet. Even the devs seem to be waiting for big red. Root and safestrap are great but a locked bootloader has us hamstrung WRT kit-kat.

not sure about the others but fitness for gear works great and essentially replacing s-health totally at some point. the apps are almost identical when you open them. I work for Samsung.

You happen to know if Verizon even has a KitKat build they are testing for the Note 3? I just want it for certain apps that require 4.4, plus it's nice to have a OS with the latest API levels.
A coworker of mine is testing it on vzw but there have been issues with, you guessed it, signal strength, so this is why we haven't seen an update yet. Shouldn't be too long as she told me that is the only issue being reported

i had the galaxy nexus on vzw before the note 3 and they skipped an update and on the next version release vzw would update the nexus. i'm hoping the note 3 is the same. at this point i'd rather wait for the next release and skip kitkat.

[Discussion]Android Lollipop for S3 International. Will it be possible?

So all we need is an update for Note 2 so we can get a TW port. Perhaps this port could be more stable than KK. So the question is, when is the 5.0 official update for Note 2 will come? Are there even rumors for an update for the note 2?
Android Lollipop will most likely be even less hardware-hungry than kitkat. So I see no big problem in bringing it stable to our device.
aosp lollipop - yes, if it will be ported or support for s3 by cm will continue, that would be awesome
Android L is like windows 7 and 8, similar but better performance
we can dream ! no

Sorry for coming around with such a negative approach but do you really think that we'll get Lollipop after KitKat was cancelled? That seems to be unlogical, especially when we think about the update policy of Samsung.

Hi!
I don't think that S3 will get Lollipop directly from Samsung (I think nobody expect that), but I expect that will be technically possible, hardware could running it and developers try to port the update for this device.
From Samsung, I don't expect nothing.
what i really hope is that android 5 won't need a kernel update.... or we will be stuck with an unworking cm12
By the way, can you guys explain me how project volta works? will it come to other non-nexus devices? thanks
I need touchwiz based Android Lollipop with blend of s5 and Note 4 features. Will it be possible in future?

You saw a news which is dated at march 2013, are you serious?
There will be no touchwiz based lollipop for SGS3. If we're lucky, EXTREMELY lucky, some exynos 4 device may get lollipop, like Note II got kitkat, and somebody may port it, but this is THE BEST SCENARIO, considering the fact that Note 2 got KK and we didn't, and Samsung policy, we may NOT be that lucky. I doubt that any Exynos4 similar device will make it.
You'll have more luck waiting for CyanogenMod, Omni or similar AOSP ROMs, but be prepared for issues, I already have some sneaky tests going on .
I fear that it will be the KitKat thread all over again with rumors, screenshots of "test reports" and whatnot.

Well, kitkat was made for devices with 1gb of ram. Rumors says that android 5.0 is going to be for devices with 512mb of ram(or even more). So chances are that we could skip kk and go directly to L. But this is based on rumors only.
Not likely mate. As far as Samsung is concerned our device is obsolete.

[Q] 910G Variant Lollipop Firmware

Hello XDA,
I have the 910G variant and I've been waiting for the release OTA or via Kies since the release began but bubkiss.
Sammy mobile literally has dozens of variant firmware and theres plenty of threads on here about cross flashing X to Y or what have you but not a single mention (according to a fair amount of searching) on whether any of the existing ROMs work for the G or whether its going to be released etc.
My question is, does anyone know of any of the variant versions that WOULD/SHOULD work with the 910G or if the firmware is out there and I'm just an idiot?
If someone can recommend a ROM to try within reasonable margins I'll definitely give it a shot and be a guinea pig.
Thanks in advance.

F ROM's will work on our G device with a custom kernel like AEL - but we need the bootloader and modems for our G model first, which we cant do without samsungs release.

From my understanding our modem and bootloader is different from the n910f and therefore we can't flash it on our n910g untill someone finds a custom kernel or sammy releases it. Sucks i know, I'm waiting for lollipop since it was mentioned by Google

It was literally the main reason I bought this phone over the Nexus 6, I had a Note 3 and flashed the early Lollipop leak and that was such an incredible leap in quality I felt the lollipop for the note 4 would make it the best phone on the market by a long shot, especially given the 4.4.4 firmware was already so much better then the usually touchwiz fair.
Oh well, patience is a virtue, if only I could buy it on ebay.
Yep we just gotta wait, sucks but it's android and not ios and since we all love android we have no choice but to wait. The only good thing about ios if you get updates fast, but that's not good enough for me to use that horrible os.

Agreed.
I handle iPhones at work a lot and I have to admit the hardware is gorgeous and Android hasn't totally outdone the iPhone 6 yet in hardware, but the software, the most important part is far and away much better.
Every time I pick up an IP6 and think "man this sure is sexy...maybe the software is better now" I try to navigate through menus and end up playing the "wheres the back button now!" game and I hate it.
I like the design of the iP6, but i absolutely hate the OS with so much hatred lol. I would never go back to iOs. If only you could install android on a ip6...
I'm officially starting to get pissed off enough to consider returning the phone, the rep guaranteed me the Lollipop update would be out for my variant the week it released for all others.
Clearly thats not true.
What is taking so long to release?

first of all, relax and take a deep breath.
Lollipop for the N910F is NOT gonna work on G since you don't have the correct bootloader and modem.
so i'm sorry, but you'll have to wait for Lollipop release for the G.
and even though the F roms work on G with kitkat...it still needed a different kernel, and that has to come from sources...that samsung has to release...which takes a looooong time
so sure, you can look at spec sheets and see that F is basically the same as G, but it still won't help boot the rom.
sorry :good:

Lollipop *NOT* Confirmed for the SM-P600 (Arriving eventually)

Hi everyone. I was just chatting with a Samsung Representative and he/she has confirmed lollipop for the SM-P600 (at least in the US) very soon!
I have attached a screenshot of the conversation as proof of this exciting news.
SAMSUNG HASN'T FORGOT ABOUT THE NOTE 10.1 USERS!
I am sure Lollipop is coming to the SM-P60X devices eventually, but I would take the word of a lowest-level web support tech who is likely reading from a fill-in-the-blanks style script with SEVERAL grains of salt.
It will come when it comes.
The man stated that lollipop has been released for some versions already, which isn't true. It will come but there is no guarantee it will be soon as this guy in the chat doesn't seem to have a clue.
Out of curiosity: why is there so much interest in Lollipop for this tablet? I have Lollipop on my phone and 7 inch tablet, and KitKat on two of my Samsung tablets and I haven't noticed any features I'm missing on the Samsung tablets. Lollipop seems only slightly different, and I don't know if I can say it's any better. Am I missing some feature that would improve our Samsung tablet usage experience?

Leaner TouchWiz among others...
I think Samsung's history is that newer TouchWiz versions only ship with new products, I don't recall them shipping new TW versions on older devices - i.e. most likely TouchWiz will remain at the current functionality level even with the Lollipop update on the Note 2014.
Given how buggy Lollipop is/was - I almost want them to either go straight to M or at the very least get us 5.1.1. (Moto G Alarm did not sound today due to messy and buggy downtime settings - no thanks Lollipop!)

Not sure 5.1.1 is good enough. I have that on my phone and its performing worse than on the earlier lollipop versions. Could be a sign I need to upgrade my phone, but I think lollipop needs more work. Though I also think Samsung Touchwiz needs a lot of work too...

I don't own one but I played with one running lollipop and it felt quite a lot faster/smoother than my Note 10.1 even when a new Rom was installed which I thought as weird given that they run the same hardware. Also checked Ram consumption after booting and it was 500-600 MB less as compared to my my Note's...
Of course all this may change after extended use. For example due to the ram bug that exists on many lollipop setups ram may go out of the window pretty fast. In which case performance may/will follow. But my initial experience was exactly that (as compared to KitKat): way more mature drivers.
Here's hoping -then- with all that extra time that Samsung put into it would fix any bug that lollipop brought to all other of her devices before releasing lollipop to our device.
The multitasking lag is a Google issue not something we can help. I would say that my Tab S is lightning quick now.
I sometimes wonder how google can **** up stuff like that, also the memory leak etc. I mean they are probably the richest company in the world and they hire the most intelligent people. And half the world will use their OS on multiple devices. IMHO they should only release new versions when they are sure that now big bugs are still present.
Lollipop definitely speeds this device up. I'm running the P905 port at the moment and it's awesomely snappy.

I use a P905 port of Lollipop on my P605 and hadn't any problems to maintain root. Flashed Rom and twrp with odin, then Supersu via recovery.

Most likely not, you guys always seem to forget that P600 and P605 have totally different processors.
I, personally, do not like Lollipop on my Nexus 7. I do like KitKat on my Note 4.
What I'd really like to have KitKat on my US Note 10.1 (I have 4.4.2 and it says no other updates available). I haven't found anything in these forums about the US 4.4.3 or 4.4.4, but maybe I missed them.

It's not about lollipop. It's about the upgraded sources and drivers. To this day even the hardware of this tablet (espec the exynos version) goes untapped. Android version 5.0 would be a side-effect, the real "star" would be tapping more of the resources of the tablet.

These guys are running the same hardware as us but their (official) lollipop based Roms caused their tablets to ... take flight. Basically that's what many of us wait, more optimization.
I mean we can have (some of) it by using AOSP but then we lose proper MultiWindow and Pen Support. An official Lollipop release solves all...

Will note3 ever get android 6.0 (marshmallow)?

Anyone know if samsung has them planned?
No. This is asked by others many times too. Keep an eye on sammobile, cause if there is any chance of Note 3 getting Marshmallow then chances are high they will be the first to post it. I am just waiting for 5.1.1 anyway. I won't mind if a two year old flagship doesn't get Marshmallow.

CM/AOSP always has a new Android for you ^^ After Samsung takes longer and longer to fix stuff and Stagefright etc on older phones, I went to Temasek's ROM. Works perfectly.
AAND it seems like ppl started to port Note5's ROM to Note 3 too....
