[Q] Stock VS980 Battey Drain - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My father has a stock unrooted Verizon LG G2, and is telling me his battery life isn't good he has had for just over a year. When he got his G2 is was running android 4.2.2. and now is running the latest Verizon software. I used to have a G2 but don't have it anymore because i upgraded to the G3 . anyways i looked under battery settings and nothing seems to be hogging the battery! his GPS was off all day, also he turns Wifi off when is is not using it. He had a total time off the charger of 13 hours and just over a hour of screen on time his battery was on 7% when i looked at it, and today we were out snowmobiling all day so he was not sitting in a dead zone all day.
is there any kind of bugs in the latest Verizon Version software that can cause this. If there is that would be great to try. if not i may send him to a Verizon Store, and or try to do a factory reset.

Well we just bit the bullet and did a factory reset. before i did that i charged the battery to full then went on YouTube and found a timer counting down video and let it run for about 2 hours then did some math and figured the battery would have lasted for 7 hours at the rate it was going, so i figured the battery wasn't damaged in any way, then he told me this morning that when he was sleeping his phone only lost 4% of battery so it was software causing it! But for future reference i will try using what your suggested!
When it comes to my phone i am a Flashaholic LoL So im used really never have battery drain issues due to software
i was going to send him to Verizon, but i don't know what they would have done lol i see it this way Verizon may have done a factory reset like me, or try to tell him his phone was damaged, and he need a replacement. in other words suck more money from him! i had a G2 in the past and ripped it apart to replace the screen. so if it was the battery that would have been easy for me to replace
Thanks

So far, within 24 hours I have had to charge my phone twice fully.
What the hell is going on?

mine today started to get really hot.... it froze
upon reboot, it lost like 30% battery...
froze again in landscape mode
after a few reboots it continue to run super hot... like 65*
battery is draining even faster than what Ingress. uses
still occurs in safe mode
is the hardware going bad? i saw a few other folks having this also happen in the last week without ant solutions

i have had my current setup since i got the phone.. AOKP, Franco Kernel, undervolted -25mv, with like 215 total apps.... decent battery like, usually about 3 hrs SOT...
but yesterday was among weird to say the least.... Franco monitor will show my CPU was up to 170* at one point... but yet, my CPU usage on my monitor was with core 0-1 being less than half throtle while core 2-3 were offline... so i thought it was weird that my CPU would be so hot, yet not ON....it was so hot the phone would shutdown as soon as it got booted...
then my battery was not hot, but draining incredibly fast.... like from 88% to 19% in less than 2 hrs....
my battery usage pretty much displayed that it was the Screen consuming most of my battery.... i didnt notice GS being a problem, but im sure i would have noticed if it was
So far, i went ahead and factory reset, formatted /system /cache /data and dalvik... installed my rom again fresh.... its not acting up yet.... but for some reason i cant shake the fact its using battery much faster... i went earlier in my break from 94% to 87% in less than 10 minutes... thats not normal..maybe its just me..
so tonight i am going to reformat everything a couple times, install all fresh and see what happens before i restore everything back in the phone.

I'm with the same problem you're with. I did format everything, and the problem persists, can't really find the culprit on this.
I'm using PA 3.99 + FK, but I've tried with stock and cm, with stock kernels also.
Please let us know if you did solve the problem, and how did it, because this is becoming difficult to manage the use of this phone for me, having to carry the charger everywhere I go.

So battery life has been horrendous. It dies much faster and takes long to charge. My car charger no longer charges the phone... yet my Gnex and N7 FHD charges on that charger fine....
Qi charging works fine too (thats next to my bed)
So i called assurant, which sent me to Tmo, which sent me to Google (got it at play store) and they are sending me a new unit, since this one will be covered until manufacturer warranty for malfunction, not physical damage
Im sorry i will not have a resolution, i will revert back to stock and re lock it before i sent it back.... Hopefully i get a good one and not one with issues...

[Q] Please help me solve my battery drain $5 reward!

Hi guys
After two weeks of trying to solve this myself I'm completely out of ideas and desperate. My phone is an international d802 running on a strong Australian 4G signal.
No matter what I do I seem to be getting around 3%/hour battery drain when the phone is idle/sleeping.
I've been analysing with betterbatterystats and wakelockdetector and my phone seems to be deep sleeping 99% of the time yet the battery still drains.
It the past couple of weeks I have experimented with Stock LG, Cleanrom, Cyanogenmod and Omni as well as a custom kernel and the drain happens on all of them.
The test I performed last night involved
*Completely wiping my phone restoring the factory image
*Running setup and only installing betterbatterystats (wakelockdetector was installed this morning after the test)
*Disabled WIFI, BT, GPS, Location Services, NFC and Sync.
*Leaving the phone on my table unplugged but not in use.
*I woke up half way through the night the check the result and when I noticed it was still draining I disable data for the 2nd half of the night.
I've attached some screenshots of what betterbatterystats and wakelockdetector had to say ignore the flight mode I only put it in this mode for the last couple of minutes.

Any and all advice would be appreciated.
More screenshots. I only installed wakelockdetector this morning after the test to check what it had to say AFAIK it should still have accurate results despite this.

For this test it should have been nothing as it was a complete fresh install with no user apps other than BBS. I manually disable all of google syncing in the settings menu. I've performed similar tests in the past couple of weeks with my normal daily driver setup i.e CM with a few apps running and sync/bt/nfc/wifi/data enabled and it produces very similar results.
This test was just an absolute barebones "control" test to rule out anything I could have installed so I was shocked to still see the drain.

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to say? If you are referring to the 3hrs of no signal in BBS that would be when I disable data for the 2nd half of the test.
Ok after another night of testing I'm at a loss.
This time I tested in flight mode the whole time which should rule out any sort of radio issues.
To my shock I lost 25% overnight at 3.2%/h screenshots attached.

yeah with data provided it can only be bad battery.
reboot and check for weird percentage jumps, just for fun. They might not occur, I would return the phone for service if I were you.

No its not. I usually drop about 2% in 8hrs with LTE on, being when I am sleeping and not touching the phone of course.
Oh dear this isn't great news though on one hand I'm almost strangely relieved as I've been going crazy testing every possible solution for the past couple of weeks.
Now the bad news. My phone is a grey import (so I could get the international model before the local model was released) so warranty/service could be a massive pain if at all possible.
I'm now looking into purchasing a replacement battery. The only one's I can find are on ebay for around $60 delivered and then I'd need to pry the phone open to replace it.
Is there any way I can 100% confirm it is a faulty battery before spending more money? I do recall certain tools during my testing describing the battery health as good but I don't know how reliable they are.
Voltage leak indeed. Could well be a bad phone and boot just battery.I may lose .1-.2% overnight airplane mode. Sry bud.

I'd have to agree with the majority here and blame it on a bad battery.
See if your location options are on, if they are, turn them off and try again.

Yes someone actually advised that to me on the whirlpool forums earlier so I did that very thing last night.
Just turned it on and it was on 98%. Not sure what to make of the result??
Bad phone or battery is the result.

Anyone have bad battery life on g2? Any fixes?

Has anyone been experiencing bad battery life on the g2? When i first got it a month ago it was amazing easily getting 50+ hours with about 6 hours screen time. But over time its been getting worse. I already did the whole stopping the carrier iq and all that, it still doesnt help much. Now when i go to sleep and wake up 7-8 hours later my battery drains 50% or something like that for no reason, no wifi or anything on or synced. I did see some posts about people experiencing bad battery, this phone is supposed to have amazing battery life whats going on? I rooted my phone, still on stock rom, wondering if anyone has fixed their battery issue. Would installing a new rom like aeon v3 help improve battery like its supposed to be? Its getting frustrating, my gs4 had worse battery but at least the standby times werent as bad as they are on my g2. Any fixes for this?
There has to be something running in the back ground draining battery. If not try finding a battery Conditioning Application

Based on the above it could be a few things.
If you want to check a few things on the phone side you can:
- install GSAM Battery and let it keep an eye on what's actually using your juice. Then either remove, modify, adjust settings, etc, for whatever is using it. If it's an app... delete it. Reinstall it.
- You can try a factory reset
If neither fix it then you can try another ROM, but if your battery is just as bad with a factory reset I'd lean towards the battery. Maybe you have some bad cells.
I've had mine for a bit, and I only lose a little bit if not touched overnight.
My current setup:
- Madhi 4.4 KK ROM (1/18 build)
- Obviously rooted with the above
- Greenify on all my non-necessary apps (hangouts, weather and one other app spared from this)
- All my apps auto-sync features are disabled since I just run it once in a while, and things like mail / etc I don't need push anyways
I get pretty solid life even after a few moths of use now.

first, install betterbatterystats and look for wakelocks, try reseting the device. batterylife also depends on how you use the phone...i can get 9hrs on screen time reading books with still 15% left or drain it in 3-4hrs playing games.

Yes i have downloaded and used gsam battery app. I dont see anything unusual in my stats, also using better battery stats, its been in deep sleep for most of the time, and it doesnt say the phone was on or running when the screen was off. But for some reason i wake up and my battery is decreased by 50% again....I am using greenify and hibernating alot of those annoying apps. I am stopping apps that are running . And on the phones battery manager android system is first with 34% but it says its only been running 11min, and no gps is listed. And my screen on time was 2 hours those are what i foudn when i woke up with 20% left, at night it was 70%. I seriously think my phone is messed up when im using it its not that bad, but for some reason when i go to sleep and leave it alone it dies for no reason....

I definetly would try it. Also you could try different kernel. But its beginning to sound like there could be a defect in your battery. If nothing helps i would send the phone to LG and let the battery replace. You are still in warranty, right?

my battery has a problem too..
when my phone is idle sometimes the battery level increases by 1 or 2.
when im playing heavy games like gangstar 4 the battery decreases every 2 mins and the temperature reaches 40°C. and when im just browsing it decreases every 3-5 mins with a temperature of 34-36°C. and when im watching kuroko no basket (wifi off) every episode just consume 2-3% of the battery (24 mins. = 2-3%)
and the temperature is about 28-30°C.
I think my battery drain problem depends on the temperature

Help! Bad battery life from day one. Possible causes? Faulty hardware?

Why my G2 has such poor battery life?
A year ago, I bought G2 F320 from China. It was supposed to be brand new retail box set, but it arrived with fake back cover, some tiny scuffs at the edges, and of course knock-off accessories.
Also, the screen had three whiter spots which were only visibly on black backgrounds. They are permanent and look like pressure marks.
Anyway, that all was not a big deal. The big deal was that from day one I had terrible battery life. The only things I used phone for was light web browsing, notes, occasional photo. I never had any games or benchmark stuff on it.
No matter what ROM I tried (all Cloudy variants, KK, Lollipop) I got max 20-24h battery life with 1h30o Screen On Time. If the SoT was less than 1h, I would occasionally get 48h or battery life. I recently tried BlissPop and Resurrection Remix with CM13 (Marshmallow) and although it worked gloriously well, the battery life went down by half: 10-24h, depending on SoT.
From day one I set up some extreme battery saving tricks, blocking wakelocks, disabling services, minimal brightness, the phone went into airplane mode every night for 6 hours. And the above is max I got.
And at the same time I read that G2 has such phenomenal battery life, with some reaching SoT of 6+ hours, while most getting 4-5+ hours. And that was WITHOUT all the powersaving stuff I did!
Sure, f320 has a 350mhA of a battery, but that in no way should account for such results. In fact, all reports from f320 owners I found said battery life was not much different form the d802 etc.
I even tried running it without an SD card, but there was no discernible difference.
So, the obvious conclusion was: bad battery. Right? After all, if the seller replaced the original back cover with a fake, why wouldn’t he do it with original battery. So I recently got an original LG replacement battery at a local GSM shop. It was sealed, had QRcode on it and was supposed to be original. Seller advertised it can be verified at any LG service center, though I never did.
Anyway, after using this new battery for a more than week, doing all the “calibration” tricks, and letting the phone get used to it, I can tell absolutely no difference in battery life.
So, assuming the battery is good, what are the other options? Could it be that there is something wrong with some internal component? I was thinking that since the excessive drain seems to me connected to SoT, perhaps it’s the screens fault? Perhaps apart from having pressure marks, it has a flaw which causes it to drain more power than it should?
If that is likely, then I would be willing to replace it. But if this is a shot in the dark, then there is not much sense in shelving out 50% of how much the phone is worth for just to replace the screen and get not difference.
What do you think?
Try to full charge then plug off the charger then calibrate (battery level will be drop suddenly)
Charge again until %100 then calibrate again then charge again...
Do it 3-4 times until FULLY charged and making calibration won't cause drop of battery level, you're done.
Make this process ONCE and that make battery some kind of overcharge so use your own risk!
Then charge normally use of 2-3 charge cycle shows correct battery level and that makes a little battery time.
(Fully usage of my phone 5 hours and that trick makes 5:30 hours with d802)
Install wakelock detector (maybe you've done this) or install xposed framework with Amplify, both detects wakelocks (Amplify can block wakelocks, alarms and services)
Try to romtoolbox lite to stop recievers from AUTOSTART MANAGER. Especially google play services consumes a lot of battery (~%30). Block if not using or recieve notifications from "that" app.
Deleting own apps of LG helps too (if you're using stock)
Hope it helps

Samsung s7 Edge not compatible with os 6.0.1?

Hello guys!.It's my first time here. So, I have some questions regarding this problem
I bought my S7E around july, and it had amazing battery life, It lasted around 30hours++ but I drained the battery by playing games so I can charge my phone before 5pm(my office hours) to avoid over charging when I go to bed. I even used the best perfomance that time, gps on, gestures on, etc.But still at least it lasted for 27hours.Now, it only lasts for about 12 hours something. Ive never overcharged it. The moment I saw the green led, i plugged off the charger.
Can anyone fix this? well please don't tell me to turn off all the features, I had them on and still I got to use 27hours. I dont know when I did the update, maybe os 6.0.1 is draining the battery?or any suggestion?
Thank you
Go to Settings>Battery and view the usage to see what app is using it much battery.
You can NOT overcharge the battery of your S7 Edge. I've always kept my phones on the charger over night and never had problems. I'm doing that since the HTC Magic (T-Mobile G1). It has overcharge protection. It is NOT good to drain a Lithium-Ion battery down to a few %. A Lithium-Ion battery operates the best when charged >40% and at average room temperature. Nope. I never drain my battery.I keep my battery until 20% then charge it directly. I know how to take care of Lion battery. Ive heard about the overcharging protection feature but i'm not sure whether it works.we never know whether that program runs on background or not since we cant track it.

Well, then don't charge overnight. You're problem is most likely software related anyway unless your battery is very old and/or you overstressed the battery too often which can't be because the S7 Edge isn't that old and you "...know how to take care of Lion battery". I think you meant Li-Ion but w/e. A defective battery is possible but very unlikely. BTW overcharge protection is not a program. It's a physical thing soldered onto the battery/charger PCB. Hardware. There's one built into the battery and one inside the charger and of course we can track it. You can't because you probably don't have the equipment + knowledge to test it. If you're so concerned, you should really read about it. After all, you're dealing with a highly reactive metal.

Well that's why i charge my phone at my office:crying:
i wonder if the OS is the problem. I've heard about drivers not compatible on s7 using 6.0.1 so the background data keeps working such as gear vr service. It wasnt there before. and OM Customize. So, if i overstressed my battery, it will damage my battery? I did that before to charge my phone between morning to evening.

You're hearing really weird things buddy The S7 Edge has always been running Android 6.x.x. It never ran any other Android version. The drivers are fully compatible. In fact, the drivers on a Samsung are as compatible as drivers can get, since SoC, Camera Sensor and many other parts of the phone are coming from the same manufacturer; Samsung.
My guess, and I can only guess since we'd have to see your battery stats for more detailed explanations, is that you either ran into the Android System-, or Google Play Services battery drain bug that occurs after an OTA update. These problems date back all the way back to the Galaxy S2.
I'd recommend you first flash a stock ROM using the "HOME_CSC" file. This will NOT wipe anything from your phone. Only the core system and stuff will be reinstalled. If you still have this problem, try flashing a stock firmware using the regular "CSC" file. Always make a backup first. The regular CSC file will WIPE EVERYTHING from your phone, including internal storage but it won't touch you MicroSD. Now you start with a freshly installed Android and see if it solved your problem.

Hello mate,I am sorry for my late reply since I gave up. I am trying to solve this again.
Well, can you tell me where can i get the stock firmware? I am from Indonesia(well I think some parts of the continents have different firmware).I wanted to flash it tho but I am afraid I got some "hacked" firmware.
well, the battery usage looks normal to me.
google play services around 5-15%
android OS 15-20%
android system 15-20%
but still,it drains too much>,<
Let me try to upload a pict of it.
Additional information : Slept 8 hours while listening to music and it drained from 55% to 2%.I mean this is really insane. That's why I am taking serious action now. The first time I bought it with the same settings and apps + I turned on always on display and night clock while listening to the music for 8 hours of sleeping,it only drains 10-20%.
I took this ss because I got 30hours on time : link
these are the drained ones.15Nov and 9 Dec
15Nov
9Dec
Thank you mate
First out of all. How much SOT (Screen On Time) do You get?
To check that go to battery usage at the end of the day or when You have 20% and in battery usage tap on screen and take a screenshot.
Second.
Certain firmware updates decrease battery life a little.
And third.
You can disable apps that are draining Your battery if You don't need them.
Also for a really good battery info what uses Your battery etc You can download GSAM battery monitor from play store.

well from the time being, i think my network operator is draining my battery.I tried to turn off my mobile network last night and used wifi instead.I lost 1% for 8 hours.Well, I changed my network operator around october and since then I felt the battery drain. I already sent report to the provider hope they solve it.
But I wonder, my network operator has good 4g coverage here, why does it drain too much? My old operator had only 3g coverage. Is there any way for me to track down my operator whether they are using too much battery to search network coverage maybe?
Newest firmware always decrease battery life a little
