[Q] Problems with remounting my device - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I just downgraded my S5 from 5.0 to 4.4.2 cuz I want to use xposed framework to customize my phone (no I dont want to use a custom rom). Now there's a problem cuz xposed makes your phone laggy but there's a fix where you got to edit your build.prop..
Well since I only got read rights I wanted to remount /system and gain rw rights.. Works fine, adb shell says that its remounted n stuff but my phone says I still only got read rights..
Any ideas maybe?
Greetings
PS: Sorry for not being able to show pics or links but since Im new here Im not allowed to post any..

Have you tried using a root enabled file explorer such as root explorer or ES file explorer with the root plug in?

Yes, I used file explorer with root add-on and gave root rights to it

Removing stock apps?

Coming from a Mt3g that I've ran exclusively with Cyanogen mod since I got it, I've become quite used to running a very slim, light phone, and getting this today with all this bloatware is driving me nuts. Anyone been successful getting these apps off theirs phones? I'm already rooted, and have astro installed, but didn't quite know what to remove.
Would prefer not having to use adb, as it doesn't work well with Win7
Use Root Manager and delete what u want. be careful what u delete tho.
how do u remove the icons of these crapps from the app menu?
After you delete them with root manager and re set the phone, they should be gone.
Yup. Granted I used ADB, but root manager will work too. Just make sure you delete the apk and the odex.
I deleted mine with root explorer .. worked fine for me...
Yep, I thought Astro had root access but I was wrong, snagged root explorer and cleaned my phone up rather nicely.
Any stock apps cause issues if removed?
try this thread. there are some u can remove and some you shouldn't remove.

Guys I know you can use root manager to delete the bloatware on this phone. How can you delete the .apk files using ADB? I searched but it doesn't seem to work. Any instructions on how its done.

Thanx but I thought you needed some type of recovery application. No?

I know this is a bit of a noob question. But I have been using root explorer to "move" apk and odec that I do not need. Is is that simple? There is no "uninstall" process, you just remove/delete the apk/odec?
That should be the same as rm -r in ADB and that's what I've been doing for the last couple of years. Proper or not, it does the trick
When I got the phone I think it had 4 pages of bloatware apps? I'm down to 2 and couldn't be happier.
I don't think the remount on root explorer works properly however, I had to remount between rw and ro with terminal.
ADB doesn't work well, I need to set up some sort of remote ssh so I can just run all of these commands from a shell on my desktop.

rooting

have you seen that 1 click root an z4root don't really make a full root of our x10s???
I was trying to put some ringtones on the notification folder (inside system/media/audio) but I was unable to do it :S it said I lack of the permissions :S
Still need to crack the shell. Use root explorer or something.

hmmm well i used it and it says that message :/
maybe our root method is working 50%
Did you install Busybox from the Android Market after rooting with z4root? I believe this is what is used to grant superuser capabilities. Root Explorer should allow you to push those files after this.
busybox wouldn't install on mine after i'd "rooted" using z4root.. and now the superoneclick won't work for me either (I've just installed JIT)...
installed busybox and didn't work at all

Just use ringdroid if you like to add ringtone or notification sound. No need root. And btw z4root works good for me

I just rooted mine today. apparently there are a few versions of busybox that don't work as they should. I installed titanium after root. Load titanium, it will tell you it can't get superuser rights but will start anyway. Click the "Problems" button at the bottom of the screen and it will download a reliable version of busybox.
I hope this helps.

Didn't work for me either. When trying to download BusyBox through Titanium, I get an "install failed". Went to market and downloaded busybox from there but gives me a "your phone is rooted. Could not locate busybox".
I have an X10a through AT&T R2CA016. Do I need to debrand it before rooting?

You don't need to debrand before rooting. When you download/install Busybox from the Market, open it and it will give you the option of which version of Busybox you want to install/use, select the one you want and run it. Then you can use Titanium after that.
z4root worked fine on my x10. used superoneclick to apply shell root after that but busybox installed fine before that.
Will z4root work on my 2.1-update1 X10?
I have the Nordic Unbranded version with build No. 20A0504 or something...
I only need root to access the Japanese market, nothing else (don't care about otifications etc).
Will it work then? If I use z4root?
Oh, and it wont mess up my SD card, contacts or battery or anything like that?

old post i know....but it works fine for me....had you mounted in R/W mode? it should say R/O at the top if you have. I just copied an mp3 file straight into the internal memory (/system/media/audio/ringtones)
That what I do!
I use a "Flash tool release"
root by installing the z4root
then I i install busybox
and to get full access I install rootexplorer and reamount system to the rw the in rootexplorer
then use the "X10modtool" XDA Tool So Always when i try to change staff in my x10 I just open rootexplorer and re amount
Then use Adb shell and staff
(Work 100% for me)
The reamunting it just does not work when use seus or PPC - the ADB is close in the production version of the SE system
By the way How to turn on the ADB in the SE ?? (permittions)
In summary when you install XDA apps just add rootexplorer and reamount to rw

God Mode? (solved)

How can I activate God Mode on a rooted XOOM? I want to nullify some stock apps, but Root Explorer is saying they are read only.
Thanks.
[edit] Changed the thread question.
LOL. I didn't know we were playing Quake.
What do you mean by god mode. You already have root. That's all you should need.

lol.
That might not be the correct term, and it may require a custom rom. Not sure, but on Project Elite for the OG Droid, there's an option under General>System called God Mode that gives you full access to files on the system. That may just be what Actngrezy calls it in PE.
I just want to rename some of the apps that were included on the XOOM. Specifically, I want to nullify the Quick Office apk so I can install the NI Adam version. When I navigate to the apk in Root Explorer, I get an error telling me it's a read only file. I never got that error with the Droid. I can change whatever I want to on that device.
Did you click on mount r/w in root explorer

Did you install superuser? if so make sure you have allowed root explorer in it. Then on the top left hand side in root explorer hit mount r/w

Im just visiting the forum to steal a few files to compare with atrix , how ever if i read your cleverly phrased question correctly and you are trying to remove/freeze some apps that came on the Xoom and you are getting read only error its because to modify anything in the /system dir you need to
1. back up anything you might remove via adb pull or via adb shell cp
2. adb shell
3.su
4. mount -o rw,remount (what ever the path to zoom block is i dont know cause i dont have one ) exp /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
from there you can remove what ever you want out of system dir
5. exp. rm /system/app/quickoffice.apk
Thanks! I never noticed that button before. lol.
you can also get a system uninstaller in the market that will do it for you just the same, I usually use that in case there is more included than just the apk file

I thought about the uninstaller thing, but I'd rather not uninstall anything that came on the XOOM just in case. I just add an extra .null at the end of the apk (and associated files, which are easy to find) in case I need to restore them.
For instance, the NI Quick Office app force closes when you just breathe on the freaking tablet, so I had to restore the default one.

Need Help with /system/bin/sh

Okay, so heres my case i rooted my play and installed the custom ROM GBTweaked0. Since then i couldn't access my Recovery or install my old rom from my SD card. Me being a n00b, i tried uninstalling busybox, the uninstall failed and since then my apps seem to have lost root access and im missing /system/bin/sh.
Please if anyone could help me get the sh file back i'd greatly appreciate it. i just want my phone running back on my stock rom
try downloading busybox installer from the market it has every version if that doesnt work reroot or give those apps permission in superuser again

i already tried reinstalling busybox from the market and it claims it doesnt have root access even though it does. i made sure in super user
you could find the busybox files and move them manually to the correct location

i dont think that that would work either because system/bin is a read only folder. so even if i knew how to manually install busybox the way your talking about i don't think that it would let me.
never mind i flashed to stock 2.3.2 using WotanServer. Thanks for the help

yes, but like i said in my first post, i tried uninstalling busybox which deleted the sh file in my system/bin folder which must have taken root access away.
But again, it's all good now cus like i said i managed to flash back to stock 2.3.2 using WotanServer and updated to 2.3.3, rooted, restored all my apps, and now my phone is back to normal.

AdBlocker for ICS

Has anyone got a working AD-Blocker for the ICS Roms...?
I have tried to update the host file manually and this has not worked... as system is R/O
Tried setprop system.mount rw still no joy....
Just wondered if anyone had got anything working....
Thanks

You can change hosts file with rooted device. I suggest use Es File explorer for full access R/W file system. If you edit hosts file on windows, you must convert it using dos2unix before copy to A500.
ROOT WITH
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1546593
DO NOT INSTALL FACELOCK or ACER RING
then after you open your tablet.
1 - Launch A500 Remount
2 - Press /system (Full access in ICS LEAK)
reboot your tablet
redo 1 and 2
then
use root explorer, go to system and press r/w button to change to r/w that should work
1) Get root as mentioned earlier
2) download AdFree from the Play Store. It works with ICS
This is the easiest method

This is a good method, however I noticed some problems with links to sites with ad redirects not working with AdFree. ROM Toolbox on the Play Store has an ad blocking option built in that has some more options (such as blocking risky sites or porn) so you can tweak to your liking.
AdAway also works, plus it has quite good block lists (AdFree misses some ads for me).
Thanks guys... I have root access already but still cant get R/W....
I am going to flash another ROM via CM.....
I used to like it when the old flash able ZIP files work..
Thanks
again to all

Do you follow what I said or you just quick read..
the R/W you get it by doing what I said.
sometimes it's just weird, but reboot, and remount in RW then USE ONLY ROOT EXPLORER to mount R/W system/ others didn t make them work...
and command line neither...
