Changing Note 4 DPI settings and what to change back to stock *Updated 4/25/2015* - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 General

Originally posted in TMO Note 4, but it should work for your variant too
If you notice anything missing or you use an app I don't and would like it added jut let me know
OK, so I love changing the DPI of my phone and apps. so i thought why not share what I know with others.
These are the apps that I feel are needed to be changed , so if you think i missed one just tell me and I'll add it.
another note i don't use the touchwiz launcher and different roms can use one that's modded.
of course your phone needs to be ROOTED
you can use whatever app you like to change your DPI, I used xposed app settings and would suggest the same
NOTE 4 default DPI is 640
In xposed app settings to change your system DPI you turn on
android system & system ui
and change it to your desired DPI (320 for me).
(you can also change it using the build.prop)
I guess its necessary to say this:
IF YOU CHANGE YOUR DPI IN ANY WAY, DO AS STATED BELOW
These apps you will need to change back to stock: 640
camera
camera test
com.sec.android.gallery3d.panorama360view
com.sec.android.ofviewer
com.sec.android.sviewcover
com.sec.phone
contacts
gallery
incallui
com.android.mms
phone
photo studio
s health
samsung camera filter
touchwiz home
video trimmer
not changing some can cause it to not function properly or FC
These setting are recommended if you use them:
S-Voice
- you don't have to change the dpi to stock unless you want to but if you get a FC change the screen dp to 480x854
Samsung Keyboard
- you can leave it the same as your new DPI or change it to stock DPI if the secondary icons alignment bothers you, check the box 'apply res to widgets',
Lockscreen (com.android.keyguard)
- you don't have to change this one back to stock but if you use lockscreen security the bottom will look weird
- to change it to stock, enter the stock DPI (640) and check the box 'apply res to widgets'. A reboot will be requried
Smart Remote
-change dpi back to stock and change screen dp to 320x480
Calendar
-if you use it I recommend you change it back to stock because the on screen notification size will be off
Wink app
-it will think your using a tablet and causes issues so change to stock
Swiftkey
-resize using keyboards builtin resizer
PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO HIT SAVE ON EACH ONE AND REBOOT YOUR PHONE AFTER
IF I MISSED ANYTHING OR YOU WANT ANYTHING ADDED PLEASE TELL ME
THIS ARE MY PERSONAL SETTINGS AND IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO THE SAME ITS AT YOU OWN FREE WILL

I hate the stock DPI on this phone but I changed it using build.prop as I'm trying detox from using xposed. I want to be able to jump to lollipop right away and must pull myself away from the xposed tit since I don't see it coming to lollipop. Only issue I had changing it in build.prop is with camera. Didn't FC just didn't fill phone screen obviously. So I'll just use google camera for now. Boy do I miss that xposed though......

IMHO, lollipop is not worth it. Xposed is just too good and useful. I'm personally staying on Kitkat until Xposed comes to lollipop. And if it doesn't, then I'm not getting lollipop until I'm forced to with my next phone... in at least a year

Dpi change

I was able to change the dpi in the build.prop file to 360 and everything looks great except for one thing. The weather widget on the lock screen will no longer update. I have tried freezing the app but that didn't work and I have looked under all options to remove it but to no avail.
Does anyone here know how to remove the weather widget from the lock screen?
Here is a screenie.

It took me a few tries to get rid of it. I think the "trick" is that is has to be expanded (swipe down), then you can long press and delete it like any other widget.
Did you try an LCD Density of 320? Iirc, my default weather widget looked fine at that density.

I hadn't tried 320 yet. I only tried 360 since I read someone had success with that dpi. I also pulled down on the widget itself but no matter how long I press and hold I get no option for removing it.
Thanks

Well the change in dpi didn't do the trick. I can't see to figure out what app or widget this is associated with. Would anyone happen to have any ideas? This is on my lock screen and it appears after clock shows up. Here are 2 consecutive images. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm using 320 lcd density--changed with rom toolbox pro---with no issues at all. I was experiencing crashes at lower dpi of 280 though. 320 seems to be my sweet spot and I'm loving it. Dashclock doesn't look so gaudy now.
Ok I have a retarded question but why would you want to change the DPI? The reason I'm asking is cause I've never messed with DPI stuff.

I like to use a lower dpi so that I can fit more on my screen. It basically makes things smaller allowing for space. Here are some screenies for comparison. These are the stock 480 vs mine at 360 dpi.
Hope this helps.

Oh ok I gotcha. Thanks!

Are there any drawbacks to doing this?
Nevermind.
Finally. I am able to run dpi of 320 and still have a lockscreen without issues. I ended up deleting the original widget and adding one from "hd widgets" in it's place. Unless you do this you will always get the ugly white box as per my original post.

What all do i need to change? I changed the build prop in system but my TW app launcher is all shrunk up and my home screen indicators are half way up the screen.
I tend to change only the build.prop file. Sometimes things will move around on the desktop but I haven't used the tw launcher in some time simply because I like Nova. If things aren't looking the way you like try upping the dpi. I use 320 but I personally think 360 is the best compromise.
Also some apps may not like the dpi change. When this happens I suggest using xposed module that changes dpi on a per app basis and increasing dpi until you like the look.
It's a lot of trial and error to get a setup you will be happy with.
Hope this helps.

Does changing the DPI cause the Multiwindow popup on the left side of the screen to not show up?
No it shouldn't. It should still come up but look smaller. I think you can enable it by holding the back button for a few seconds.

Where did you get the modded transparent multiwindow that works? I've searched but hadn't seen any mod like that for note 3. Even the function in Wanam is missing.

[DISCUSS][XPOSED]Show off your Xposed Setup!

Welcome to the Xposed Setup Discussion!
Hello Guys, I have started this thread so that we all can share our Xposed setup.
Here are some simple rules to be followed:
(1) Name the xposed modules you use in any order separated by comma(","). Optional: You may also mention specefic settings for individual modules.
(2) Mention the ROM you are using so that other users can get an idea about the compatability of xposed modules.
(3) Conclude something about your setup like hows the performance with your modules enabled or how the modules you use make your device more useful. You may also attach screenshots to show off the changes brought by modules.
Thats it! No other rules to be followed!
Some useful Links:
Xposed Installer
Xposed Modules Repo
Here is my Setup with Xposed:
Modules - Show Keypad, Youtube Adaway.
ROM - Mahdi 2.7 07/19 Build
Conclusion - Just necessary modules that I use to get rid of the the ads in Youtube and to get the Dialpad popup automatically whenever I open Phone app.:highfive:
Gravity Box
Tinted Status Bar
Here's my set up, Mahdi rom 19/7
SwipeBack (disabled nav bar and using swipe up from bottom as a back gesture, its totally changed the android experience.)
CPUTemp in status bar, this lets me know if some apps are acting up, really handy to have a quick at-a-glance look at my cpu, if the temp is above 50-55 that means something intense is happening, 60+ something really intense such as a 3d game. 40-50 normal temp. It should be below 40 when I'm about to sleep and have it on airplane mode playing a podcast
StatusbarVolume - makes the volume panel a thin bar on the top, non obtrusive when I'm toggling it whilst doing something on the screen, this is just fantastic.
All Notifications Expanded - just my laziness
Complete Action Plus - changes the entire look/feel of the "Open With" pop up, totally customisable and really unmissable once you have it!
Burnt Toast- - shows the app icon in every toast, really cool and neat thing that's hard to miss once you have it
PlayPermissionsExposed - shows all permissions in the new version of play store
ReceiverStop and Wakelock Terminator - both these were used to stop the nlpwakelock problem, I don't remember the specifics but this helps get the phone into deepsleep
StatusbarScrollToTop - really neat feature, don't remember it being in a custom rom
TintedStatusBar - L style before L was a thing, this is what really MAKES the user interface pop
Enable BatteryStats Permission - kitkat disabled batterystats for 3rd party apps like Battery monitor, this re-enables them.
iOS7 X - changes signal/wifi positions similar to ios but keeps the notification icons. I use version 1.02 because it's stable and does what I need it to, along with clock in center.
XDictionary - app that searches for the definition of any word selection, real handy tool
SuggestionsToggle - this is relatively new but makes life easier when trying to enter urls without swiftkey trying to screw them up with spaces!
I'm Not using the usual favourite Gravitybox because most of those features are there in mahdi rom.
Overall, After a long struggle with the galaxy nexus, I can finally say I'm Happy using a smartphone every day!

Guide for getting the navbar on our note 3

There's not a lot of demand for this but here we go anyway haha!
This has only been tested on dynamickat 4.2 and all credit goes to bri315317 for his awesome rom. Also this will not work well with tw so install a 3rd party launcher that supports navbars.
1. First things first back up your rom incase you mess up something and your phone goes poof.
2. open up your build.prop located in your system folder with a file manager and add qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 as the last line in your build.prop
3. Reboot into recovery and Install the Aosp systemui that bri made for his rom.
If you don't wish to customize the navbar buttons then there's no need to proceed further.
4. Download xposed additions for xposed. This is used to disable the hardware buttons.
5. Download gravity box kk for xposed. This is used to customize the navbar buttons and other parts of the rom.
6. Make sure to install another launcher besides tw launcher because tw doesn't work well with softkeys. I installed nova launcher but Googles launcher works as well.
After you've done all of the above reboot and profit
Actually I've done some fairly serious googling to accomplish what you've outlined here.
Hardware home button has been my biggest issue since buying the device. Thanks a bunch

Huh, interesting. Do they show up for you at all? I've only turned it on once to try it out, worked fine but I only used it for a few minutes, so you probably have more insight than I do.
Does anyone else here a problem with the Dialer app? I have an extra bar at the top that is only made for the settings icon and it blocks the first contact.
Edit: Do I need AOSP UI now? I'm on Dynamic Kat 4.2 and was able to get a navbar before, but when I tried to add it just now to get a screen shot of my problem I just get constant UI Crashes.
This happens by editing the build.prop file and with using GB.

This is what I'm talking about. I thought for sure it covered up part of the contacts but it still takes up quite a bit of space.
That's because it adds the menu button. Which takes up space unfortunately. But shouldn't affect anything other then an eye sore

Google Lollipop Calendar Fix (DPI adjustment)

Calendar Situation:
2560x1440 resolution screen has LESS information displayed verses my 1280x800 tablet.
Solution.
build.prop change to the DPI setting.
380 DPI + reboot+ calendar cache clear == TABLET VIEW!!! 7 day weeks and full month view with text.
390 DPI or greater will revert back to stupid mode.
Now, this is a very short sided solution, but I think my OS looks better with smaller icons... Rather than having 5 icons of width on my home screen, I have 6. I get more mail and more calendar in the widgets too. I honestly don't see a downside.
380 makes it pretty much unusable, IMO. I have it set to 460. 440 was too small for me.

This happened because the 5.0.1 update replaced the build.prop file in /sytem with with a new version.
If you want to make the custom 380 dpi stick across updates, you should create a text file called local.prop and place it in the /data directory.
The local.prop text should include the following line:
Code:
[STRIKE]qemu.sf.lcd_density=380[/STRIKE]
Save the file and reboot.
EDIT: this method doesn't seem to work on the stock ROM any longer. It works with CM and mist likely with other AOSP derived ROMs.
hi,
I have been out of android for abit but 1 of the the first things i do is mod my dpi (more icons, more screen, more widgets etc.. for me)
using dpi changer or build prop editor
however this time on nexus 6 it seems to change all except the icons and icon text sizes and widget space
i have tried putting the local build to no avail. is there anything else i need todo or any ideas

Hi cryptkilleronline,
It looks like the local.prop method doesn't work anymore on the stock ROM (CM and other ROMs still support it).
You'll have to reduce the value in build.prop instead.
The only thing I'd recommend is not to use 380 or 370 dpi, as these values seem to cause some issues in landscape mode.
360 dpi works fine.

[GUIDE] Reduce Xperia Z screen resolution [ROOTED DEVICE ONLY]

Hello,
Why reduce android screen resolution ?
- Reduce battery consumption of your xperia
- Increase game performances
Before starting, make sure that your device is rooted and download the next application : Screen Shift.
Note that the configuration described is especially for Xperia Z. If you use these values for other device, it will not work properly.
Instructions :
1. Install Screen Shift app
2. Give it root access
3. Change the resolution by type these values : 720 x 1280
4. Change "Density" value and type : 294
5. Activate the profil et and accept.
6. Reboot your device.
Your resolution is now in HD. It's normal that your icons are bigger than before. Sony's launcher has not been designed for that resolution. I purpose you to install Google Now Launcher if you want a clear interface without big icons.
Credit to aravindsagar
You should mention that some app after changing resolution can behave weird and draw part of their graphic in some weird way, the same with games, for example Minecraft PE, and Sudoku(only games that I have beside VR for goggles) look really weird one buttons are big other out of screen.
I always change DPI and res on devices, and I would recommend to do this after clean installation or before installing any major app.
Im not saying that its always like that but Im doing this for longer time and its just annoying sometimes when its happen, so be prepare for that.

Thank for answering.
If you change only the resolution and not change the density, then your message is true.
It's important to change your density. The value depends of :
- your device screen size
- the default resolution
- the default dpi
The configuration that i described in first post is especially for xperia z.
Well yes, but some people, like me just hate this ugly big default DPI like all of new phones have, and for most of time I set DPI to smaller so I can fit more in it without making text too small
for example this is default 480 DPI and 360 that I use. It not only look better but text still look good on it.

For me DPI and res should be option in setting and every user should set it own like he want, because for now only real reason why I root my phone is because f that DPI... funny as hell...
What if we manually change the dpi by terminal or in built feature in custom rom ?
Maybe you'll find my question moronic but is it possible to restore default settings with the same tool? How, and what are they? I mean, what values of resolution and DPI are default ones?
Most of those apps have restore or backup option for restoring DPI.
DPI can be changed by any file manager with access to root, or any app that have option to change build.prop(like kernel adiutor) or DPI(custom rooms or aroma installer option)
you can manually change/revert DPI just by changing line ""ro.sf.lcd_density="" in bulid.prop file in system folder. Just make sure that after editing in properties of that file you have permissions rw- r-- r--
And of course make copy of this file just as a backup
