Google Cardboard perfect for LG G3 - Google Cardboard

I switched to the G3 after briefly owning the OnePlus One. The OPO is a good phone, but it has absolutely no bells or whistles. With the G3, I've got Slimport HDMI out, a FM radio (if I was on Sprint), removable battery and MicroSD card... and the tipping point for me for switching phones? Google Cardboard.
If you haven't tried Google's cheap-ass VR headset, you should. You will need one of the bigger ones coming on the market now that fit phablets like the OnePlus, G3, iPhone 6, etc.
The cardboard is a little origami folded Viewmaster, but instead of putting in those old little stereoscopic paper discs, you slide in your smartphone. VR apps split the screen, so each eye sees a slightly different image.
The OPO has a 1080p display. It looks okay in the Cardboard, but the VR device basically uses magnifying glasses for lenses and that 1080 display is no where as impressive when seen thru them.
The G3's display is incredible with it. Very noticeable difference. I can't wait until we see more movies and games coming out in that quality.
With WiGig coming out later this year, where you can stream information tons faster than regular wifi, I expect to see VR to explode in 2016 if not sooner.

Haven't received it yet, due to the Chinese New Year holiday which basically shuts down B2C shipments. Should have it in next couple of days and will post a brief review.

It is a solid piece of kit. That said, this is still a novelty type of item in general. It is, however, great for getting immersed in a movie like it's a private IMAX theater.

So it does work for LG G3? what about Samsung Note3 ?

Yes, it works great with the LG G3. No idea about the Note.

I have been thinking about getting something like this for my phone. I have some gift cards on Amazon so it would be from there. Just not sure how much I'd use it. How would I control the phone and is it just for the cardboard app? Guess I really just don't know how it works with the phone.

Very modular. Makes you wish they offer upgrades down the road such as a replacement camera sensor module, 802.11ac WIFI module, etc.
And that ladies and gentlemen is why we buy Samsung tablets. They reek of quality.Samsung NAND, Wacom digitizer, Broadcom radios, Samsung displays, screws and connectors instead of tape and solder. You can drop a Samsung tablet and not worry about parts becoming dislodged. The Prime suffered screen failures because the connector to the MB would fall off. Here's the teardown of the Prime. You can see the clear differences in approach between Asus and Samsung.

but asus uses alumimun backing... it's gotta be high quality!
kinda reminds me of the hotel we stayed at this weekend. they spent lots of money to make the outside look great, but the rooms themselves were disgusting.
i want so bad to love asus, but i'm now on #7 of asus' tablets between only 2 different models. i quit and going back to samsung - i was trying to upgrade the gt 10.1.

Thanks for catching that, I left it out. I've been using the Note travelling for the past few days and can confirm the audio is awesome. Add in aptX lossless support and this is hands down the best tablet on the market for audio output. I also saw your BB test of IO performance on the TF700 forum. What you can't see really does make a difference in performance.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1842793
Here's a chart to help Identify the eMMC/NAND used:
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/product/flash-emmc/overview
Apparently Samsung used:
16GB
VHX
KLMAG2GE4A-A00x
169-ball BGA
12mm x 16mm
eMMC4.41
Class400
This article gives a perspective in terms on Samsung's nand class ie 1500 vs 400 etc:
http://phandroid.com/2012/08/02/samsung-begins-mass-producing-uber-fast-64gb-nand-flash-memory-for-smartphones-and-tablets/
Apparently class 1500 is the fastest in production
So it looks like KLMAG2GE4A is considered class 400. Howerver what that translates to in terms of speed I haven't been able to find.
The article says class 1500 is 4x faster than the previous generation of Samsungs chips so if 400 class is previous gen then speed of 1500 class/4 perhaps?
Would love to find a similar teardown for the ASUS TF700 and compare the NAND used there.

A bit hard to make that call yet. My iPad has sort of unbelievable sound. I'm constantly amazed at the sound out of that little speaker. I will be comparing the two. I'm sure the Note is awesome (I haven't had time to listen to it really). (Paper specs are nice, but mean pretty much nothing ) Note: But then again, subjective test are pretty worthless also. A contentious thing this, no?
If this thing is as easily upgradeable as i hope it is, and the parts are available, i can see myself keeping this beauty for a long while, manufacturers making a market out of this would be nice
- Battery replacement, improved battery technology(longer/lighter)
- LCD replacement.
Wonder if any of the newer hi res screens on the market would fit, perhaps wishful thinking on my part, imagine a cheap compatible, ebay non functional tablet with functional hires screen
- Camera front and back,
Rather then buy the "next tablet", replacing the parts i'd need/want, at a cheaper then "next tab" price point, sounds pretty appealing to me
Thanks for showing.
I will look at this tonight.

Do an XDA or Google search on "Wolfson DAC," "voodoo sound," and "supercurio." Unless the sound implementation in the Note is somehow different than other Wolfson-chipped Samsung devices it's a pretty safe call to make. Especially if supercurio's work on the SGS3 is directly transferable.

Ill say it again. I'm blown away by the sound quality of this device. I made it even louder with volume+. Everything is crisp and clear. Good bass also. I now hear the difference between true stereo separation/sound & the "stereo" sound the prime had(both speakers side by side on right side of tablet). After volume+ prime sounded really good but it can't touch the sound this note 10.1 pumps out.
Also, this device has a great display. Although same resolution as prime, the color reproduction is way better. Hard to describe but images just look better on this display. I especially notice it while playing games like nova3 or dead trigger. Everything looks more detailed. Movies and videos in 720P HD look great. That demo helicopter video that comes with this device is a perfect example. So I have no complaints with the display.. I like it

I had that happen on my first Infinity, the screen would go on and off (mostly off), though the backlight would stay lit. My second one had the screen separation issue. I got my Note 10.1 today, guess what, it's 100% perfect! I love my Asus Mobo (Sabertooth 990FX) and my Asus Router (RT-N66U), but after that experience I am definitely going to stay away from Asus Tablets, their QC on tablets just isn't there yet.

[Q] LG or Motorola?

I'm really proud of my Nexus 5! So ill choose the LG.

Its too early to talk about whats going to be possible or which one is better.
Maybe the newly patented pie controls would very work good here.
music control isnt mentiond in googles trailer but since google now can handle it, i guess the watches do too. i see a maps card in the video, notifications and voice are a good start for developers. i would like to see gestures, heartrate monitor like galaxy gear 2, directions and location suggestions. floating notifications, multi layered watch-like ui controls, there are a couple things i would like to see and do with these devices.
it seems the lg watches will be water resistend? otherwise we couldnt wear it on the beach (like in google wear trailer)
i still dont know if its better to have a full featured android device with custom ui on your wrist or a stipped down version which only synces with your main droid.
i think standalone is the way to go but i can imagen battery issues.
maybe use e-ink display?
it would be great to sync while the main device is availible, but still work if its not in the area... like in the beach scenario from the trailer, without phone in your neo it wouldnt work, would it?
the moto360 looks amazing, im really looking forward to the release day
lg version is ok, cant say much without specs.
samsung galaxy gear 2 has heartrate monitor
sony smartwatch needs update
wimi has gsm standalone and android/iphone sync features
peeble uses e-ink display
android watch z1 was the first full featured android smartwatch
iconBIT Callisto 100 was the next best thing with full android
Simvalley Smartwatch AW-421.RX is full feature android too i discovered today
also it looks like china has released a bunch of new smartwatches... lets see
nice concept Smile Smartwatch http://youtu.be/Luv9X9YbxuM

The Motorola one is looking nice in concept.

LG, cheaper and better design :good:
I'm leaning towards the LG, but only because I love the quality of the G2 and the last two Nexus devices.
Going on just the look (I haven't seen any specs) only, hands down Moto360 easily, looks awesome, a lot smaller bezel, if the reviews are good, and battery last at least two days, I'll probably buy one if it's sub $500aud.
Oh i prefer moto of course. Cannot wait when sales starts

As low as $99 (USD)
http://www.amazon.com/LG-Watch-Powered-Android-Wear/dp/B00LB2ZQ3C
I got the LG G Watch as a christmas present and it is amazing! There's really not much of a difference between any of the Android Wear watches. Some have a slightly bigger battery but other than that, they're all the same.
Only big difference between any of these watches are how they look. Round vs. Square.
I absolutely love my ZenWatch. Best Christmas present I've received in a long time.
I've had my Asus Zenwatch for 6 going on 7 days now, and I really like it. Pictures don't do this thing justice, it is a NICE looking square watch. With the slightly curved display, it really helps it kinda blend in with your wrist more, and doesn't make it appear so large ( I have medium sized wrists). I like using this watch for just an ACTUAL watch alone, forget about Android Wear.
As for Android Wear.....It's just useful enough to keep me interested. I don't much care for the fitness aspects of Android Wear, but receiving my notifications on my wrist has kept me interested enough. This watch has dramatically cut down how often i fumble around with my phone and turn on the screen to check for notifications or messages. Also, receiving these notifications on your wrist and being able to act upon them seems so much more natural and less intrusive in a social environment. A quick glance at my wrist and maybe a swipe or two, and I'm done.
All in all I am happy with my purchase, and at $199 USD, it's one of the cheaper Android Wear watches. It's also a watch that you'd just want to wear as a nice watch, because there is no doubt that is what it is.

Yea, at $199, the ZenWatch is a steal! That said, the cheapest I can find it right now is at Amazon for $280. At that price, I would definitely pay $10 more and get the LG G Watch R. Paired with a nice band, it makes for a wonderful looking watch and is a much more conventional with a round face. With the recessed watch face, I would anticipate the LG to be more study than the ZenWatch and Moto as well.

I noticed that as well on Amazon. I'm not sure why it's like that, but look for it on the play store. That's where I got mine, and its $199.
My opinion on the G Watch R is that it definitely is the go to watch if you want it to look identical to a simple/normal watch. It does look rather bulky though. The Zenwatch doesn't look like a normal watch, but it really shows that smart watches can be beautiful without being circular and trying to completely mimic a simple watch. I've had serval complaints on mine already.
Have you checked out the inWatchZ
Personally I don't like any of them. With the growing demand on smart tech the market is going to evolve quickly. I am holding out for a watch that can do everything you would want a phone to do.
Check out the inWatch Z brand I feel they have a solution that is superior to a lot of the brands on the market.
The smartwatchgroup website does an extensive review of the upcoming smart watches. inWatch Z rated 8th in the world market. plus its the only watch that is also a standalone phone.
Hope this helps.

Actually, it is comparable in size to expensive chronographs and doesn't look the least bit bulky on my normal sized male wrist. That said, it would look absurd on a woman's wrist.

I've had the Moto 360 ever since the beginning of December and absolutely love it. At first the battery life wasn't the greatest and I would occasionally have connection issues, but once it got the Android 5.0 update sometime during December, everything completely turned around. I get about 2 days per charge now, and it's as stable as could be.

No IR blaster, send IR commands with laser autofocus?

Would it be possible to control the laser autofocus, considering it uses IR to do so, and instead of measuring distance, send IR commands to mimic an IR blaster?
That would be some James Bond type ish
Yeah i'm not really familiar with the android camera2 api, but if you could control the laserfocus ir diode, assuming it has the same functionality as that of the ir blaster counterpart, I'd assume it'd be possible.
Oh, crap I didn't even think to see if this had an IR blaster. I use it all the time, why the heck would they leave it out?Argh, this might be a deal breaker. I just assumed that like pretty much every phone has one now.

Yeah it sucks, but it's an alternative. I'd be willing to try and make an app if someone would confirm whether or not the api can access the IR LED and control it so I don't have to search for it.

I don't think there's an api. There isn't any documentation or any mention of being able to control laser autofocus. Oh well, guess we'll just have to use an actual remote.

Between no IR blaster, no OIS, and fear of AMOLED burn in (I've never owned nor wanted an AMOLED screen) I'm seriously re-considering my purchase. Their are compelling devices on the Horizon with the features I am looking for, but I've always loved the Nexus line. What to do...

Yeah I'm not SET on the nexus 6p. I might consider waiting for the LG G5 or S7.

Yeah, I'm still using the LG G3, its rooted with unlocked bootloader and it does everything I want it to. I don't flash ROM's like I used to, so maybe I jumped the gun a bit too fast on the 6P. I'll have to consider it over the weekend. Hell the 64GB version came to 600 bucks, it's not like a true flagship device is that much more money.

I'm leaning that way too unfortunately. I would have preferred the 5X but the specs are really underwhelming. Oh well, plenty of new phones coming in the next 6 months.
---------- Post added at 07:24 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:47 AM ----------
Actually just cancelled. I'll wait for the 820 devices. All I care about is root for adblock, I couldn't care less about spending 20 hours a week flashing ROM's anymore. Been doing that for like 7 years now and Android is good enough now that the added features in ROM's are barely an upgrade to anything. I'll wait and see what the reviews are here and online once they start shipping and re-evaluate, I guess.

Nexus 5X is almost the same as old Nexus 5 and twice more expensive. Didn't you consider Nexus 5?

No phones really offer an IR blaster with the exception of the S6 and some LG ones. Its not s big deal in my opinion because I haven't had a phone with one since my G3. I've almost exclusively owned AMOLED phones and I've get to experience any burn in at all. The Nexus doesn't have OIS but it does have EIS just like other phones without OIS. What devices would you call 'compelling' that are coming out soon?

I had GS4 with Irb. Worked ok for some things but I have TV, two Tivos, AV receiver, Blu-ray player and a Roku in my rack. Couldn't find an app that could handle them all. So went with a Harmony remote. It's a stretch even for that. So I would rather have the rooting /romming capabilities of the Nexus than the IR.
Always Searching for the Best
As for promising new releases, Lg V10 looks like it has everything (except ff speakers). Ir blaster, fingerprint scanner, multiple hq cameras, unbelievable durability, larger, better quality screen than G4. They moved the speaker to the side, which is the second best location.
Google should have 2 versions of each Nexus release- A bare bones value model and a spec'd out version with all flagship features at a premium price. Seems like they are forcing you to sacrifice size for specs, that is to say that the smaller devices are carrying subdued chipsets and display res at reduced prices. Nexus and Nexus Prime is what I would like to see. Instead of just 2 different models, 2 levels of finish as well. Probably won't be getting either of them even though I've been looking forward to this release for months.
And to whoever said that not many phones have IR blasters, you're right if you don't think Samsung, HTC and LG(Sony, Oppo) are important Android producers. All true (non-compromising) flagships have them. S6, Note5, M9, G4. The only reason Motorola doesn't have them is because they are really a value conscious supplier. Who is left really?

As posted, all flagship phones have IR blasters. LG, HTC, Samsung. They account for the vast majority of handsets sold I'd imagine. I'm not worried about burn in, I've just never had an AMOLED phone, my preference has always been cooler screens, not ones that artificially "pop" colors. LGV10, Sony Z5P, and the Snapdragon 820 will be in over 30 phones beginning in January. 4-6 months is soon in my world, but I don't eat at McDonalds, whine about having to wait 3-5 weeks for shipping and obsess about things like phones. I enjoy them, they compliment my life, they don't define it. I don't judge anyone for liking what they do and don't feel like I nor anyone needs to defend their purchase.

I had a similar issue and I stopped wanting an IR blaster because its more of a novelty for me. Ever since I sold my last G3 I haven't looked back.

Some of those OEMs stopped including hem in their own flagships. Samsung didn't put it in their Note 5 or S6E+ if I recall correctly and HTC isnt a major OEM anymore with their lackluster sales as of lately. I enjoy devices that can be updated when there are issues and that have good developer support. I've owned Samsung, LG, Motorola, ASUS and Nexus phones and while each is great in their own respect I tend to enjoy the Nexus line more. I agree with you regarding how a phone should compliment what you do, and if I came off the wrong way than that was not my intention. I jsut don't see why people get so upset because a single feature is missing on an otherwise 'perfect' phone. I haven't seen a Nexus with a IR blaster so I didn't expect it to have one. When I hear soon I assume that means this year but January could be considered within that depending on your perspective. I might buy a backup phone with the SD820 but I'll have to wait and see if there's a clean device to run it because I'm not a big fan of skinned UIs.

Should I get the Z force?

I am currently on T-mobile with an s edge+, I am pretty much tired of everything about thos phone and T-mobile. Im probably going to verizon very soon. Would the Z force be a good phone to get at this point or try to tough it out till a better phone releases?
aside from the lack of root, lack of 3.5mm headphone jack (WTF?), and the lack of decent front-facing stereo speakers (largely offset by the availability of the JBL MotoMod however), this is hands down the best phone I've owned.
Battery life is amazing, and it charges incredibly fast as well. Total game changer. Camera is decent although not spectacular. Screen is great. CPU is fast. MicroSD means I never run out of storage.

I second all of this, although I have headphones with a removeable audio cord so my adapter stays in the cord and I use it for any aux input in vehicles...the jbl mod is great for music and speakerphone. Root doesnt affect me...seems most want it for the mobile hotspot. I had the phone since day one in verizon prepaid and the hotspot is active without any sim card tricks. If you can afford the phone upfront I suggest prepaid, look into the cost savings over a two year period. When I did it for my useage and the plans available at the time it was almost $1200 cheaper and all I lacked was hd voice video and wifi calling which has since been rolled out to prepaid customers
hmm i didnt notice the lack of headphone jack. im on the fence about this one.. i so rarely use the headphone jack that i doubt id miss it.

If you rarely use it chances are that means uou only have one thing you plug into it? It comes with an adapter that has a rubber strap that holds the cords together.

I wouldnt recommend drop testing it but I have dropped mine way more than Id like to admit...the edges get scratched up and the style shell falls off...the jbl mod does not as it has stronger magnets. Dropped it in tile concrete and asphalt and it is still going strong.

i dont plan on testing it that way, and i do plan on getting an otterbox defender until i do get some mods.
Z Force uses a layered polymer screen, not glass, so it's alleged to be shatter proof. In fact, if you manage to get a gouge on the screen but the rest of the phone is undamaged, Motorola believes in their product so much I've been told they'll send you a new phone for free (not willing to test this on my own phone, but I have it from a good source).
First responder said camera is not spectacular... Not sure what he would consider to be spectacular as it has a 21mp rear camera. Also one of the mods available will turn it basically into a high end digital camera. Also the first phone I've ever owned that has a front facing flash. Not that I'm a huge selfie buff, but if you are then that's a big plus.
All in all I'm loving this phone. It has a couple of quirks, like the lack of a photo gallery app like my GS6 had (have to go through the File Manager to get anything similar since I hate Google Photos), and I can't seem to use my Samsung Gear with it (although Samsung swears up and down it should work), but it seems to be worth the drawbacks in the 3 days I've had it.

The Gear 2 Neo is, in fact, the one I have. I've always used it straight out of the box, worked great for me but that was with a phone designed for it. If you have an alternate option I'm definitely open to making it work with this phone!

I actually work in the camera sensor industry (primarily infrared, but much is still applicable here). There is a lot more to image quality than megapixels. Image processing algorithms, sensor hardware features, optics, optics, and optics, all play a huge factor. Oh, and optics too. In fact, MP is such an obsolete measure of a camera's performance, I'd typically prefer a lower pixel count with a larger pixel size; all other factors being equal, a larger pixel will perform better in low light situations. Now, depending on the design, on large pixel count sensors, you can sometimes do tricks such as pixel aggregation, where you cluster multiple nearby pixels into one larger, virtual pixel, but often times in cell phones, that sort of image resizing is done in software after the fact, drastically reducing the benefits.
Now don't get me wrong, the Z Force camera has a lot of positives going for it. Ease of use, low shutter lag, good feature set (manual controls such as ISO, etc). Front & rear flashes do a decent job too (front flash is great for drunken selfies). But in general, the snapshot mode image quality still pales in comparison to my wife's iPhone 7+, which is simply amazing. In expert hands, with sufficient setup time, maybe this one is nearly as good, but the default point & shoot images are never as good.
I haven't used the Hasselblad Moto Mod, and while it does look pretty good, keep in mind that it isn't a true Hasselblad camera; they just licensed their name for it.
That being said, the built in camera is still very good, but it just isn't as good as some of the others.

Cheater! You know too much!
Seriously though, thanks for clarifying that. I've always gone by whatever camera had higher numbers. My experience in photography was before the proliferation of digital and I never did much research into the translation from the film days. Glad to learn something new here... Although I will still never buy an iPhone until Apple does away with iTunes.

I like the way you put that. In fact, I think that should be in their advertising. "Are you nuts about taking drunken selfies with your friends? Buy the Moto Z Force for the best drunken selfies you've ever taken!"

Gallery app was released in the forum some time ago... Not a big issue, but stupid on Moto removing it. I'm using QuickPic as a replacement, as the stock gallery would crash when installed as a userdata app for me.
As for the lack of 3.5mm, to be honest, as long as you have the adapter, you're fine. What kills me is I LOST my stock adapter, which was by far the best USB-C adapter around. Your only solutions are chinese adapters or to find someone on ebay/Amazon which charges close to 15$ US for the adapter... At least in Canada.
I agree with everything that was said here otherwise: The Z-Force is by far the best phone I've owned.
just got mine last night, and wow... such an amazing phone so far.
The moto z and z force are very underrated phones. Shame it isn't more popular/have more active dev community.

Not rootable. Verizon blocked VoLte and VoWifi for other networks. Phone is unlocked but mostly useless when I cant switch on Wifi call or HD call. I will hold it in drawer untill bootloader will become unlockable.
