[Q] Question about S4 Development... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Sorry if this question has been asked before.
I'm going to be upgrading phones soon, and I'm wondering if there are people still working on unlocking the bootloader on phones with the MF3 update or later? I understand that its possible it might never be unlocked, but I would feel better getting an s4 if I new there were people out there still trying to crack it...
I would prefer to be able to install cyanogenmod in the future, so I'm wondering if I should even go with the galaxy s4.
What do you guys think?
Also, if this is the wrong place for this question, let me know. Thanks!

My opinion is it will not be unlocked. This is an old device now and any devs who were working on it have moved on.

Yea, I was kinda thinking the same thing. Still, I'm tempted to go for the S4. I know its an older device, but being that it has a removable battery, and a sd card slot makes it one of my first choices. Can you suggest another phone that I should be looking at based on that?
Thanks!

Why not buy a used rooted unlocked S4 with an MDB or MDL bootloader? You can ask for a screenshot of the "About Phone" settings.

You can unlock bootloaders on S4 with Safestrap on the newest 4.4.4 NJ4 but can only use TouchWiz
roms

Yea, I knew you could do that, thanks for the heads up though!
If the Oneplus One wasnt so damn big, I would go with that... The s4/s5 is about as big as I would like to go with a phone...

Safestrap does not unlock the bootloader of the S4. Read all the info before you proceed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448925

Right, good call. I guess I meant, I knew the part about touchwiz only roms. But yea, I've gone through that thread, and many others. I don't actually have a phone yet. I might just breakdown and get a nexus 5, but I'm still looking for an S4 on mdb, or mdl...
I found one on swappa, but the seller is unresponsive.

Get a T-Mobile S4. Is pretty much the same as the AT&T one, but with an unlocked boot loader.

I got my 32GB sgh-i337 Galaxy S4 running the MDL firmware off ebay a few months ago. Brand new in the box, never used, and everything. Paid $375 for it. The sellers name is "taylorwireless" with a 99.9% feedback rating. He has an S4 for sale right now under item number: 171557373643

I just bought one on Swappa. Thanks for the suggestion though. If the one you linked was new, I might be tempted to send the phone I just ordered back... I'll keep an eye on that seller though.

How to unlock ATT S4's bootloader

Hello everyone, I just get ATT galaxy S4, It is so fancy, but ATT's craps sucks.
Does ATT S4's bootloader already been hack by XDAs?
If so, how to unlock it?
I just have the TWRP installed in my ATT galaxy S4, could I flash customized ROM and customized kernel now? Or I have to wait until the bootloader is unlock?

To start you off in the right direction though, read up on Loki as that is our bootloader bypass method...basically anything that has been lokid can be flashed...
But seriously read!!! Don't want to waste a headache and trouble shooting on a soft brick

The Loki thing still has me confused and curious what folks think... I've been through many of flashes and had good and bad issues over the years but unsure how I feel about flashing up a ATT S4. I've been leaning towards getting a Tmobile S4 with a unlocked bootloader and getting that unlocked since I feel like it will be a bit more bulletproof. Is that paranoia or is Loki close enough to a unlocked bootloader that I can basically do everything with as little risk as would be expected with normal device flashing?

THIS INFO IS EVERYWHERE! READ MAN. useless thread here serious.
hey there bud, sorry everyone feels the need to repeatedly tell you to search instead of ending the thread with an explanation. im also sorry everyone else feels like this information is readily available, when its the furthest from that. you will require some digging and deduction skills to acquire all the information needed to fully utilize the loki function.
Since att took it upon themselves to lock the bootloader, the kernel has to be properly provisioned before it will allow it to boot (if the kernel is not set up correctly, you will receive an error about unapproved software on the device and will have to restore sans odin....yuck), so our awesome drjbliss and the infamous adamoutlers have provided a tool called "loki" which will allow bypassing of the locked bootloader and allow us to run the custom firmware.
please ensure that whatever ROM you are running has been previously provisioned with loki, or you are flashing a custom kernel that has loki baked in. Alternatively, there is an auto loki tool floating around called "loki doki" that can be flashed after any ROM to pre-loki it before boot.
You can PM me with any specific questions, and all you trolls should learn to help instead of complaining. In the amount of posts it took to complain about the OP not searching, it would have only taken one post to clarify and then this thread would have simply got buried.

So, if my phone is unlocked and rooted, do I still need to unlock the bootloader?

Been doing fine jd, thanks. Hope you are too.
Yes, I really like it. Not gonna Jailbreak, but my bank just started accepting Apple Pay. So, going to play with it. Something for an old man to have fun with.
It's just picking up steam as far as number of merchants, so ordered and will mess with the LoopPay FOB where AP isn't used yet. A year ago I would have sworn I would never use this techy stuff for banking. Must be getting soft.

Question before buying an S4..

Actually just one question.
I know loki is a bypass of the bootloader to install ROM's.
My question is, if I buy an S4, is there any updates or anything that have been applied that keep Loki from working?

do not buy an s4 with the new mf3 build. Loki is broke for that build.
I'm assuming most the new ones will have MF3 build already?

Not necessarily. I've heard stories of people still being able to buy previous versions especially at best buy. The trick is to ask the sales associate to see if they have a device without MF3. On the outside of the box next to the barcodes it will tell you the software running on it.

Thank you for the heads up. I just bought my Galaxy S 4 from Best Buy and had them check that the software version sticker first. In my case the phone was on MDL. Now rooted with TWRP and on CM10.2. :good:

Is an unlocked-bootloader valuable?

I have an AT&T S4 with an unlocked bootloader. However, I want a new device. I was just wondering if my device would be useful to any developers on this forum.
It currently runs 4.2.2, with I337UCUAMDB
Kernel version: 3.4.0-440216

First, there is no unlocked bootloader on the i337. Just and exploit that gets around the locked bootloader. MDB allows that exploit. There are enough developers here who have not updated their firmware that your device is probably not worth any extra to them.

If you are selling it try swappa.com and point out your build that it's a big advantage to those who love flash custom roms.. it will be very valuable.

Replacing My S4---ebay?

I got my ATT S4 wet and could not recover it so I am needing to get a used replacement on ebay. Will any "unlocked" S4 work on my ATT contract? My old S4 had MDB firmware when I purchased it so it was easy to use Custom ROMs and TWRP. With replacement phone I again want to use TWRP recovery and Flash ROMs. I keep seeing talk about how unlocked Verizon phone may or may not work with ATT and do not fully understand the differences in Carriers . Any info is appreciated.
Thanks
If it's sim unlocked it should work on at&t. But you'll probably not get a phone with mdb or mdl firmware and therefore will not be able to use twrp or cwm.

Thanks for reply. I know it going to about impossible to find MDB again. I have emailed each seller of a phone am looking at and no MDB or MDL yet. Hopefully I will find an XDA guy with old S4 at some point that has used Custom ROMs and still on MDB or MDL and he can ODIN back to old Stock.
Ron,
keep me in mind here or PM since mods may not let a buying thread go on long
I have an MDL S4 ATT 32gb, and obviously by my member info, rooted and with TWRP 2.5.0.2--the best recovery for us. Perfect condition and many xtras plus a 64gb Sammy sdcard.
I may, due to my son and his wife's pushing, get the iPhone 6 plus. Flashing is winding down for me and they want us all on the iPhone "ecosystem" (continuity). And time for a change.
Wasn't sure I was ready to part with the S4, too damn nice of a phone.
Since I am now subscribed to this thread I wil see your posts as long as thread is open. I need to do some quick decision making.

Way to root Verizon Note 4 ?

I am pretty new to rooting a phone but i was just looking around for a way to root my verizon note 4 SM-N910V on Android 5.0.1.
I tried googling and reading up on it but I have never rooted a phone before so I did not know exactly how to do it.
Sorry if this is an unnecessary post, thanks !

sorry friend, you picked one of the worst development phones. nothing yet. Im hoping someday but its not looking great. My advice, find someone to trade their Tmobile note 4 for your VZW one. Thats what Im trying to do
ebay rooted ones?
I thought Tmobile note 4 wouldn't work on VZW? with custom ROM?
Saw some rooted Verizon Note 4 on eBay. I wonder if those were rooted before VZW locked the bootloader.
Would I be stuck with 4.4.4 if I get those?

The bootloader has always been locked, since day one. If they're rooted, they are development edition phones. There never has been root for this phone, and the bootloader has been locked down since day one.
C'mon folks... search the forum!!!
