[Q] Dolphin - Can't download to ExtSDcard on Lollipop - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm having an issue with my Dolphin Browser that is driving me nuts...
Since I upgraded to Lollipop, I can't download files to my ExtSDcard on Dolphin. It only shows the internal memory and a redirect to a stupid folder (located on the internal memory as well) which they called "ExtSDcard" (WTF?!?!).
Initially I thought this was a glitch on Dolphin, since I restored it from my previous ROM (4.4.2), but after a reinstallation I noticed that this might be a new "feature"... and that SUCKS! Big time!!
Does anyone have/had the same issue and know how to solve it?
Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue on 4.4.2, not only on Lollipop.
Did you try SDFix app?

I know what you're talking about, I had it too on 4.4.2 (solved it manually - the same thing SDfix app does).
Lollipop doesn't seem to have that issue (the first thing I did was to check the write permission to External SD card - it's OK) , and this is only happening on Dolphin Browser. All other apps see the ExtSDcard and can save/delete/move items without any problem.

OK in this case it is just a Dolphin issue, so the easiest way is report/feedback it to the Dolphin's developer to fix it.

Did you report that problem to Dolphin's developers? Did you recive any answer? I have the same issue.

Hello, I know the downloaded files will be saved in a folder called Tunny browser automatically if we choose external SD card as download path, and we are unable to choose other folders in external sd card. I think it is not convenient, and I sent my request to Dolphin's support team before. Unfortunately although their support team told me they didn't have plan to optimize it at that moment, I really get a fast reply! I suggest you to send email to them at [email protected], I believe you can get a effieient reply.

I gave up on Dolphin because of this. On previous versions I was able to save downloaded files to wherever I want (Micro SD card), but since that update (made after my ROM update) we're forced to save the files on that "TunnyBrowser" folder located on Internal Memory. Dolphin doesn't seem to support external Micro SD cards anymore. And that kind of took back my liberty of choice, and I didn't like that...
I use Firefox now.
Thanks for your feedback mate. :good:

Sorry for the delay, I kind of lost track of this thread.
No I didn't. I doubt they change it back just for me... So I gave up on Dolphin and started using Firefox. It has several features that I like very much - like reopening all my tabs after closing or after a reboot, no matter what I do, the tabs are always there. :good::good:
And I found a solution to my problem, it's not on a menu like I would like, but it works like a charm, so I'm happy anyway: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1028808

Issue with Browser-Cache on Some Rooted OTAs

Hi all,
so the issue I'm noticing is that when you compare a rooted vs an unrooted stock froyo evo on a browser test, the rooted one is not as fast as the unrooted opening a website already cache on the system.
my example is www.citibank.com, get both evos; the rooted and the unrooted one, put them side to side.
1. uncheck mobile view on both phones.
2. now open the website on both phones let it load completely.
3. now close (using advanced task killer) both browsers on the phones. now open them at the same time, since the browser automatically remembers the last website visited.
4. now notice how the unrooted loads the website in matter of seconds 3 to 5 seconds, maybe less. now look at the rooted it loads the website as if it were the first time opening up.
so that make me thinks that the cache on the rooted or something else is a little messed up.
try it for yourself and let me know. Thanks
PS. after noticing this, i was running netarchy's stock-rooted-2.2 before, i unrooted my evo by installing the ruu official 2.2 that someone got over at the development session and did the tutorial to rooted once more, the one that is over at the development section. that pc36img file that its loaded at the end of the tutorial, seems to not have that issue even though it is rooted but then when i upgraded to 3.28.651.1 rooted unreleased OTA, it happened again.
Are you making sure both phones are set to internal or external cache?
Sounds about like the diff. Between internal vs mem card loading

Hi,
thanks for your reply. huh now you gave me something else to think, it sounds like what you are saying might be the issue. now how or where do i change these settings, i never heard of it.
Thanks in advanced.
Hi all,
no one has a guide on how to set stock browser to load its cache on internal or sdcard memory??
Really no one!!!???
SOLVED!!!
Hi all,
ok so i solved my issue by going into settings->applications-->managed applications-->all--> internet, here i press "Force Stop" then "Clear Data", and that put the browser back to stock, stock. it was so stock that the first page opening up was Google instead of Sprint's page. Now my browser cache seems to be kicking off.
Alright so guess what, this happens when restoring bookmarks using Titanium Backup. so this is an issue with Titanium Backup app.

4.4.2 - Issues after update? SD Card Write fix?

Hi, I just wondered if anyone else is having issues after the Kit Kat update? Maybe we could start a list here.... I'm on the stock recovery and not rooted (and have been since day one). If you add issues, please could you tell everybody whether or not you're rooted etc.
1.Can't write files so MicroSD card using file manager apps (but I can do it if I connect the Note to a PC in MTP mode, then drag and drop files from internal to external storage
2. MC3 doesn't work - this one may bring about the end of civilisation as we know. No really, it might.
3. Stuttering when playing movies over HDMI to a TV (this was present in 4.3 too, but not 4.2.2)
4. Options to use auto-correct, double tap of the space bar etc when a hardware keyboard is connected do not work (this extra menu only appears when your keyboard is connected).
5. Various slow downs and pauses.
6. Battery life, as mentioned by foxxorrrorororors (approximate spelling)
7. GPS - still pretty bad for me, even with GPS Test....
Anybody else got the same, or perhaps other issues?
*UPDATE* I just tried a full factory reset and the microSD card write issue remains. You also can't write files to an external USB drive either. Clearly Nvidia doesn't have a very thorough procedure for testing these updates before pushing them to our devices. Muppets.
**UPDATE** If you are rooted, the tutorial in this thread fixes the write to SD card problem as far as I can tell http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2617921
1. jup, vlc cant access sdcard either - seems they changed something here.
2. na
3. na
4. na, using swiftkey
5. not yet
6. maybe, time will show
7. jup

cars10k, thanks for responding - do you mean MC3 does work for your, or that you haven't tried it? Sorry if I'm being a bit dumb
Writing to Sd card was killed by Samsung in their KitKat update - apparently the permissions are set wrong in platform.xml. I don't know if this is the case for us. I can't even use Helium Backup to write to the MicroSd card. Darn.

Yeah, I use it daily too. Really frustrating. I'm tempted to cut my nose off to spite my face and just take the tablet back to Currys. There's no point Nvidia throwing out updates with newer versions of android and extra features if they break basic stuff in the process (USB OTG hard drive unmounting being one example of something that was broken by the 4.3 update).

Do you mean like the whole tablet becomes unresponsive at times? You can't even get to the home screen or turn the screen off? Then after anything from 30 second to 2 minutes it just comes alive again? I was experiencing that even before the update - with very few apps installed (same as my Sammy 7.7 which never froze). I've reset to factory and haven't had it again... Yet...

Here's a thread about how to solve the problem of not being able to write to the SD card. You need to root first though unfortunately. On the plus side there's absolutely no reason why Nvidia Shouldn't push a fix out very quickly if they are paying attention.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2617921
After rooting I used ES File Explorer. Before you can do anything, in ES File explorer turn on Root Explorer in the side menu by tapping the button next to that entry, then tap on the Root Explorer text itself to enter the options menu for root access. In the menu that pops up tap "Mount R/W" and press the radio button to mount "/system" as RW, then press ok. After that you can follow the instructions to edit the Platform.xml as laid out in the link above. I used ES File Explorer's in built text editor to do this. After you've made the changes to platform.xml, you to set the correct permissions for the file, again using ES File Explorer (long press platform.xml, press the menu button in the bottom right hand corner, then tap properties) change the permissions to rw-r-r-. That should be it, in theory you can now write files to external storage.

Google's KitKat is supposed to be restrictive on allowing apps to be installed to sdcard1, but you maybe able to trick installs using symbolic linked folders.

Wiping dalvik cache isn't an option in the stock recovery on Kit Kat. I just looked a few mins ago. Wiping cache is there and I used it, but it still isn't solving the slow booting/loading time.

That's fine, I'm not going bother with rooting, I'm rolling back to stock 4.3. This whole kit kat update left a really sour taste in my mouth and rooting the tablet just to put in a dirty hack to fix it is ugly, IMHO. The fix isn't even guaranteed to solve it completely as others have expressed other issues. At least with 4.3, I know I didn't have much problems with it, and I need my sdcard for hosting files (25GB worth) for an app that putting them in the cloud isn't workable when I can't access them on the road or at places sans wifi.

Agreed. While I think Nvidia have done a great job at pushing out updates in a timely manner, the quality of those updates has been poor. Each time they have added some useful features, they have also either introduced new bugs or failed to fix existing bugs. On the one hand, I want the latest update due to the game mapper functionally and the fact that they fixed the bug regarding unmounting external hard drives (which they introduced in 4.3), but i don't want to have to employ a workaround to use my microSD card or an external hard drive freely. It's such a shame as this device has so much potential. I don't think I'll be buying the next Nvidia device.
To roll back to 4.3 involved installing unsigned drivers on my PC (a real no no) and unlocking the boot loader (which means my warranty is now void). What a stupid end user experience Nvidia and Google have created between them. At a time when I want to move away from rooting my device and flashing custom recoveries and ROMs they are actually making doing so more and more of a necessity. If I'm going to have to keep tinkering with my devices to get them to function in the way I want, then I would like a better OS that does less dodgy stuff with my data and is truly open....

[Q] Help! Note 3 kitkat update sd card support question.

Hey I have a question thought maybe you might be able to help. I just updated my samsung galaxy note 3 and its with wind mobile and it's sm-n900w8 modle. Anyways I keep hearing about this sd card thing being removed on the web today and how everybody is pissed about it. I tried reading about it but don't understand. Is there anyway it could be super simplified for me? Any help would be great thanks.

A simplified answer:
Google changed the permissions of third party apps regarding external storage due to security concerns.
In KitKat third part apps aren't able to read/write to sdcard unless the apps are updated and they generate a folder separately for that app. Even then they only have access to that folder and no other. System apps will still be able to read and write so stuff like My Files from Samsung still has full control.
This is what it means in a nutshell.

So things like downloading a ringtone from the web browser or using my otg cable or using a torrent client will not be affected? I also noticed that in application manager if I click on some of the apps it shows the move to sd card as greyed out and others it shows it as highlighted is this normal? And also I noticed that when I go into my sd card the folders for a lot of my apps are there but the size of my card for storage amount has not dropped is this normal and does it really affect the average joe who's not big into tinkering with Android os?

The torrent client and browser will need to be updated if they aren't already or you can use the stock (system app) browser. But no, basically those things will not be affected and should work just fine.

Ok dudes I will just go about using it like as per usual. Thanks for the help guys!
If you have rooted your note 3 then it is possible to modify a system file to give all non system apps that for example you have downloaded from play store to behave as they would before kit kat changed write permission.
See this post for details of how to edit the file to allow apps to be able to write to your sd card.
Fairly easy to do, just have to use any file editor to add a single line in a system file.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51036231&postcount=482
Alternatively someone has posted that they have written an app to do this on play store.
I can't find link to this at the moment.
Will edit this post If I find the post.

[Q] Force close loop after editing platform.xml

I wanted to bypass the kitkat restrictions and be able to upload directly to the external SD card with AirDroid, but this seriously backfired on me lol. Ever since editing the platform.xml file in /system/etc/permissions/ and rebooting the phone I've been stuck in a continuous force close loop. I've wiped the cache but this didn't improve anything. I was able to turn all data connections off which actually prevents the force closing from happening, but that seriously diminishes how smart my smartphone is so staying like that is not an option
Now that I've stopped the messages from happening, I've noticed that my internal SD isn't being recognized anymore. Camera doesn't work, the file manager shows zero files and my gallery doesn't show any pictures either. Same for the MP3 player. Most apps are broken now, but some who don't require an internet connection still work.
At this point I'm thinking that I've probably corrupted my internal SD? I think my system partition is fine as I can still run apps and use the system as it should, but I can no longer create files, maps or do anything that requires my internal SD.
Are there any suggestions as to what I should do next? Formatting/factory resets are a last resort so I'm hoping anything can be done to recover my phone! Thanks in advance!

My PC is able to recognize the internal memory and that there is only 2,7GB of free space (which seems about right). However, when I enter the drive it appears empty. Windows isn't able to see anything. So in that regard Windows is acting the same as my phone.
As for platform.xml, I added <group gid=”media_rw” /> to “WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE“ and didn't do anything else besides that. It's really weird how this happened in the first place.
Any suggestions how to go from here? =)
edit;
I also removed the added permission but this didn't change a thing.

Should have probably tried this. Instead I became frustrated with the device and did a factory reset (which didn't solve a thing) so the problem is somewhere in the system which is causing the errors. Going to flash the latest stock rom in a bit and HOPEFULLY the phone will work again.

A factory reset will only wipe the /data part. Because you did something in /system that part is untouched. A reflash should fix it.

Arena of Valor can't be installed

Hey everyone,
This is not a super important question, but it still irritates me. I wanted to try out the game Arena of Valor (which hit the German PlayStore recently) and play a round with some friends. But it turns out it apparently can't be installed. (My friends running the default roms on their phones (Huawei etc.) Have no issues at all)
I have an Axon7 running one of the latest Resurrection Remix Builds and I am rooted using Magisk. I have not experienced any other problems with downloading or installing apps from the PlayStore.
But whenever I tap on download, the download of the game starts and (since it is a rather large one) takes a while (I get the normal download bar and everything). Then after a while it says "installing" for another like 5 minutes to then suddenly give me an error message which reads as follows (rough translation from German):
" App can not be downloaded.
'Arena of Valor ..... Game' (full name of the game) can not be downloaded. Please try again. If the issue remains you can get help from the Probelmsolving article. (Code of error: 492) "
So obviously I tried again (for like 15 times now), I also tried rebooting my phone several times and I did search the code of error online and found out that it's supposed to be google-related and clearing the cache of the PlayStore and services could fix this, but it did not for me.
At this point I'm pretty confused, since I can install any other app (I've tried so far) just fine and I am now wondering why this would be. Could it be an issue with root, but then again I'd think it would tell me, as other apps did before. Does any one else have this issue or the app successfully installed on their device? Or does anyone have an idea what could cause my problem and fix this? Thanks for any help in advance!
Cheers

Just tried to download it. It worked fine, installed, started up OK. I'm on stock 7.1.1. B05 (A2017G). I'd suggest You to find the game's .apk somewhere (there are some sites hosting android apps) and try to download/install from there.

Hey thanks for your feedback! I already did that as well... should have added it above :/ I downloaded from apkmirror and another site and got it to start nad was asked to give permissions, but after that everytime a pop-up showed up telling me to download again from google play, since there was some kind of error. So that didn`t do the trick either for me.

Well, I'd say I thought so it'd do that, but it did worth a shot. I'm sorry it didn't help.
Edit: Just got something on my mind. On ine of the stock updates (can't remember which one) download from the Play Store was really, I mean REALLY slow through Wi-Fi. But I realized that if I simply start the download then put the phone in 'sleep' mode by pressing the power button, the download speed is just turns back to normal. It was pretty obvious during big downloads. It was really slow (shown 30 minutes or so for finish), then I just pressed power, checked on it in a couple of minutes and download was done. I don't know why it did this, but it worked every time, maybe you should try that. Other than that, go back to stock. jk.

I guess that app has obb too, so you should install an FTP server on your phone and an FTP client on one of your friends' phones, then go to /sdcard/Android/obb/ and copy the folder of the game to the same place on your phone

Lol no, what Play store does is just download the apk from a database and install it on your phone, then download whatever extra files the app needs. If you bought the app it will also provide authentication in case that it needs to get it.
So basically you can do the same process manually (as long as it's free) by downloading the apk and the obb, then moving the obb folder (named com.devname.appname) to /sdcard/Android/obb/.
Otherwise you can try wiping Play store's cache and try to download it, and if that still doesn't do anything delete its data.
Just checking, is your Axon 7 a Chinese version- the A2017?
I have had trouble downloading large data files for games on this from playstore too... It might have something to do with the fact that google had to be installed from other places and google has a security issue with our devices...
After a few updates, currently on B08, it works. Can download apps that failed prior to this update...

No I have the G-Model. So I don't think that should be the issue. But still thanks for the thought!

Ok thanks a lot! Will try to do that, once I come home today and report back if it worked
Just to learn something again, what exactly is OBB? And if I download the apk I don't have the obb with it automatically?
And I`m having trouble copying/moving the folder into obb (apparantly this is not supposed to be done)
Is there a way to do it?

Just move it lol
Where did you get the obb folder from? Try root browser, even if you don't have root.
The obb is just additional files that the app uses. I guess they need to do that because you's have to download the whole thing if they just updated the app like they usually do. So for a 3 GB game you might only need to download ~100 mb instead of the whole 3 GB when you update it

OBB files are basically the data files., just in a different format. The Obb files will come in a separate folder if the whole thing isn't RAR'ed or Zipped up...
You should have games apk file and a separate folder with OBB files inside.

Well I am rooted (Magisk) but ES Explorer is unable to enable the root functions for some reason even though it has Superuser rights in Magisk... And solid explorer as any other I've tried so far won't move files to the obb folder.
And I got the file from the phone of a friend as suggested

Again, try Root browser (the old one won't be able to move stuff to the SD card, but it's even better than the new one). Much better than those two... ES explorer is the worst bloated piece of crap there is.

I agree with you on ES , and tried out the new root browser which leaves a really good first impression! Didn't know of this app so far, so thanks for pointing it out!
But I still can't do it... I'll attach a short screen capture of what is happening for me
https://www.dropbox.com/s/esg4mcxmg04vebw/VID-20170819-WA0003.mp4?dl=0
(Since the upload on XDA didn't work for me)

Yeah , it seems storage permission was disabled for Play Store and I enabled it and now it works.
